There's no time to waste

"What's the plan?" The words drift past me, caught somewhere at the edge of my awareness. When I'm locked onto a hunt, everything else fades. It's like the world narrows to a single point and nothing else exists. Nothing can pull me away from it.

I leave the room without looking back. Alex and Carina remain behind with Sofia. I pass Eli and Lucas in the hallway, their faces painted with confusion, but I don't stop. I'm hardly conscious of the three lycans falling into step behind me as I move through the packhouse.

When I reach the entrance at the base of the building, I kick off my shoes and begin working with the spear. The weight of it, the balance, I need to know it intimately. I twirl it between my palms, send it spinning around my body. My thighs ache from weeks of disuse, so I stretch them out. My back cracks as I roll my shoulders. My neck pops when I tilt my head side to side. I'm preparing this body for what's coming.

I lift my face to the sky and let the wind find me. Every hair on my arms rises. I close my eyes and let the breeze tell me where the creature is coming from. When it washes across my face, I catch it. The stench of rotting flesh and decay. It's coming from the North. My mind latches onto that scent and holds tight.

My prey is out there.

I can feel it moving toward us. Fast. Relentless. The wolves have thrown everything they have at it, and still it comes.

I don't waste another second. I run.

My feet carry me past the open fields where I played as a child, chasing friends through tall grass without a care in the world. I fly past the clinic where I learned what it meant to heal, where I discovered the person I wanted to become. I race past the orphanage, that first place that welcomed me into this pack, the place that eventually led me to a family.

My speed is something else entirely. The ground blurs beneath me, and it almost feels like my feet aren't touching anything at all. The wind stings my eyes, but they adjust quickly. I can vaguely make out the heavy footsteps of the lycans behind me. They must have shifted into their beast forms to match my pace. The muscles in my legs scream as I push harder, faster.

We break into a clearing, and something makes me stop cold.

The silence is wrong. All wrong. I can't hear the wolves anymore. I can't feel the beast. Even the wind has died, leaving everything unnaturally still.

I crouch low and press my palm flat against the soil. The forest speaks to me through the dirt, through the roots that stretch beneath us. And then I feel it. The chaos heading our way.

In the distance, I catch the howls. Wolves calling for retreat, and they're heading straight for us.

Noah, a lycan I know well, positions himself between me and whatever is coming. His massive body blocks my view entirely. He doesn't understand that I'm the only one who can see this thing clearly. He doesn't realize that protecting me is the last thing he should be worried about. It's my job to protect him. To protect all of them.

I don't get a moment to appreciate his midnight fur before the first wolves appear.

They're running like hell itself is chasing them, sprinting toward the packhouse and the final line of defense. They bought everyone time to hide. They gave the lycans a chance to escape. The plan should have worked. But all of us, myself included, failed to understand what we were dealing with. I never imagined the beast could tear through our strongest warriors so quickly. Yet here it is, barely half a mile from the packhouse.

That won't happen again. I won't let it.

More wolves pour past us. In the distance, I watch trees bend and groan under an impossible weight. Then I see it. The beast. Walking toward the clearing where we stand.

I don't hesitate. I dart around Noah and charge straight at the creature, now fully visible to my eyes.

I was right the first time. This thing matches every description from the old stories. A chimera. The head of a lion. The torso of something almost human. A long tail whipping behind it. Hooves where feet should be. I curse myself for not paying better attention in those lessons when I was young. What were their weaknesses? How does someone kill something like this? Where do they even come from?

No time for those questions now. The beast has spotted me. It raises one enormous foot and tries to crush me, but I dodge it easily. Then comes its arm, swinging down to flatten me. I sidestep that too. Its face twists into a scowl. I'm becoming an irritation.

I use its arm, still pressed against the ground, as a ramp. I climb onto it, scrambling toward its face. My plan is simple. Blind it. If I can take out its eyes, we might stand a chance.

I launch myself forward, spear leading the way, and drive the weapon straight into its first eye. The blade sinks in without resistance. I can't help the smile that spreads across my face when the beast screams. This is good. This is the first victory.

But when I reach for the spear to pull it free, the creature thrashes wildly. The movement sends me flying. My back slams into a tree with a sickening crack. Pain explodes through me, and stars burst across my vision.

Noah is at my side in an instant, his huge form crouched low to help me up.

There's no time to waste. Not if we want to kill this thing before it kills all of us.

"The spear is stuck in its left eye! It'll show you and the others where to strike! Go!"

Noah races back to the clearing to spread the word. An attack is organized within moments. I force myself to my feet and follow. I need that spear back. But more than that, I need to figure out how we're actually going to kill this monster. The others attacking will buy me time to study it. At least, that's what I hope.

The beast shakes off its attackers and those white eyes sweep across the clearing. Searching. Looking for something. Looking for me.

It finds me. Our eyes lock. And then it charges, full speed, fury burning in its gaze.

Now I'm the one being hunted.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I'm too shocked to look away.

VeraThe pyre stands in the center of a wide open field, ringed by trees. Tonight the moon shines brighter than usual, with nothing in the sky to block her light. The bodies of our fallen warriors lie wrapped in linen, placed with care upon the pyre. There are far too many of them. Each step forward makes my heart sink further.Noah and I arrive at the ceremony, and most of the pack is already gathered. I notice right away that Eli and Lucas are nowhere in sight. I turn to Noah to ask, but he already knows what I'm about to say."They'll come. They just weren't sure if we'd want them here after everything that's happened."That answer is enough for me. We move deeper into the crowd, and just like before, people part to let Noah and me through. We find an empty blanket on the grass and sit down. Noah speaks up, breaking my thoughts. "This is strange. Watching wolves from this close.""How so?" I ask, actually wanting to know. I never considered it before, but just as wolves grow up hea

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I meant every word

VeraI push the door open and find Noah sprawled across my bed, staring at nothing and deep in sleep. His breathing is gentle, without a care in the world. Seeing him like this brings a warmth to my chest. He's dressed in fresh clothes, probably brought by the warriors who share his build: dark blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I have to admit, nobody ever made plain look this good.I don't want to disturb him, so I creep to my bathroom and notice someone's been here. He must have showered and changed right in this room, waiting for me to return.I start filling the tub with hot water and healing herbs. That should be enough to work out the soreness in my muscles. My body doesn't mend as quickly as the rest of the pack because my wolf hasn't connected with me yet. That's why I've always had to be more careful than everyone else. It's what made me a skilled fighter: while the others didn't worry about their wounds because they'd be fine by morning, I had to think smarter and move f

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   My Alpha and her dirty, dirty mind.

VeraI make my way to the pack house, knowing Sofia will be on the top floor. As I walk the hallways, I catch people staring at me the same way they did back at the clinic. I'm not sure what to think about it, but honestly, I'm too tired to care. The day has been endless and it's not even close to being over. When I finally reach the Alpha's door, I pause. What if she's sleeping?*Come in,* her voice fills my mind. Sofia."The woman of the hour," she says gently as I push the door open. Her room is the biggest in the pack house, which makes sense. It's less of a bedroom and more of a private wing, with tall French doors stretching from floor to ceiling and a huge balcony beyond them. Her bed faces the northern wall, tucked between the two sets of doors.I walk toward her. She's propped up on the bed with the twins sleeping beside her, a pile of papers scattered across her lap."Alpha," I say, saluting her.We hold each other's gaze for a long moment, then drop the formality entirely.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I know I don't need to tell you this...

VeraMy legs quit on me the moment the surgeon's eyes find mine. I hit the floor hard, knees first, then palms. My heart is slamming against my ribs like it wants out. This can't be real. The only father I've ever had cannot be lying dead on that table.I drag myself closer, tears already building behind my eyes. But when I get near enough to see the face on the table, something doesn't add up.This isn't Doctor Owens.I turn my gaze up to the surgeon, hope flickering back to life inside me, as he walks around the table and crouches beside me. His eyes are kind, but there's a weight of grief sitting in them."Vera, I take it. No, this isn't Doctor Owens. This is Nathan. He was one of the warriors stationed at the border when the beast attacked."Together we look at the warrior's still body. The tears I'd been holding finally spill down my cheeks."As for Doctor Owens, his surgery went well. He's coming out of the anesthesia now in a recovery space we set up in his office."The crying

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   Time of death

VeraI lie there with my eyes shut, letting the last dregs of adrenaline drain out of me. My breath comes in ragged pulls, and a high whine sits in my ears from pushing my body past every limit I had. When my pulse finally starts to slow, I lift my lids and force myself upright. Every muscle screams in protest. The ones who had been in the clearing have all crowded around Noah. Eli. Me. And the beast. Now that it's out in the open, some stare at it with curiosity, others with plain fear. A few are bold enough to prod it with their toes, checking that it's truly gone. The thing doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Just lies there, a heap of what used to be a nightmare.Noah is stretched out beside me, still wearing his lycan shape. I rest my palm against his brow and wait for him to open his eyes.We did it.We actually fucking did it.Someone in the crowd lets out a howl of pure joy, and it catches like wildfire. More howls follow, then more. I can't help but grin at the sound. Around me, t

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   The three of us together

VeraThe beast comes at me full speed and I swear I've never been so grateful for my ten-mile-a-day running habit. Without it, I'd be chimera food right about now. All those wolves tearing at it, all those lycans throwing themselves at its body, and still its only focus is me. It wants me dead. Nothing else matters to it.Then I hear something new. More wolves. Running hard from the direction of the packhouse. Within seconds, around fifty of them burst into the clearing, teeth bared and ready. They must be the ones who were guarding the other borders.I need to end this fast. We can't leave the borders open for long and I can't stomach losing any more of our people.I sprint toward the incoming wolves, scanning for their lieutenant. I spot him quickly and cut my way over to him. The beast will be occupied with this fresh wave of attackers for a few seconds. That's all I need."I need you to buy me time! I have to get that spear out of its eye!"My voice comes out desperate. I can see
