LOGINVera
"Alright. Noah, Eli, Lucas. Grab your packs. We can get to the tunnels through Sofia's office. Move it."
"No. Absolutely not." Eli shakes his head. "If you can see that thing, then we need to put it down. If we run now, it'll just hunt us later anyway."
I think about it. Actually killing this creature and being done with it forever. But even if I can see it, I can't coordinate an attack. I can't mind link anyone in this pack except Sofia.
Eli keeps pushing. "Doc, we have to kill it. We need to know for certain what attacked us and murdered our men."
I study him for a long moment. The old man isn't wrong. If we don't end this now, what's stopping it from coming back? The borders clearly mean nothing to it anymore. The pack house means nothing. But I have somewhere I need to be. Right now.
The thought of Sofia pulls me toward her, and I can feel her through our bond. Her fear. Her pain. She needs me.
"We'll figure it out on the way. Take your packs just in case." I catch Noah staring at me with those big sad eyes. "Noah, don't give me that look."
I can't deal with him right now. Whatever happens next, whether they run or stay and fight, it all leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
They grab their things fast, and we're moving toward Sofia's office. The chaos in the halls is gut-wrenching. Elderly pack members, women, children, all crowding toward the tunnels. Most of them have no idea what's really happening. No clue how much danger they're in. This evacuation plan has existed for decades, but it hasn't been used in over a hundred years. Not since the last war.
We make it to the office without trouble. The upper floors are already cleared. Alex runs down from the top of the stairs to meet us at the Alpha's door. He gives us a solemn nod, his eyes empty. Through his bond with Sofia, he's connected to every wolf in this pack. Especially the warriors at the borders. He's one of them, after all.
Inside the office, everything is motionless. Nobody around. The only sign of life is the fireplace, always kept burning. The lycans glance around, confused about why we're standing in an empty office, but there's no time to explain. I go straight to the bookshelf and throw my whole body against it, pushing the massive thing aside to reveal the hidden entrance. The passage leads down into the tunnels. I step in first, Alex and Noah right behind me.
The room Sofia's in is tiny. The ceiling sits so low it almost touches our heads. It was fixed up for emergencies a while back, some lamps, blankets, basic supplies. Still, it's a shit place to have a baby.
Sofia looks up at me, her eyes glossy. I can't imagine what she's feeling right now.
I go to her immediately, checking her temperature, her pulse, anything I can. I start talking to Carina about dilation, contraction timing, whether the twins are showing any signs of distress. Everything looks good, all things considered.
"Vera, you need to listen to me. Tell me exactly what happened to you."
The memory hits me. What that thing was doing to our people. To our family. I feel the tears coming and I can't stop them.
"I... I don't even know where to start. What I remember feels more like a dream than anything real." I wipe my face. "I can't make sense of it."
"What did you feel when you woke up? Violet said you warned the lycans before the alarms even went off."
"I didn't feel it. I *saw* it. Breaking through the southern border. I..." The tears spill over. "I don't know what it is, Sof. I don't know how to stop it. It's killing our wolves."
"Vera, I think you're our only hope. You saw that thing. Even if it was just a vision, you might be the only one who can see it and kill it. It's a long shot, but you have to try."
I let her words sink in. We look at each other, and something passes between us. Just the two of us. I know what she's asking. I also know how much it costs her to ask it. But I also know that I, like any wolf here, would give my life without hesitation if it meant protecting the pack.
She reaches into her bag and pulls something out.
A spear. Beautifully made, tiny jewels embedded along the base, a long slender shaft. The material is unlike anything I've ever seen. The blade and its wings are elegant, with blue crystal hanging from the shaft.
"This, and you, are our only hope."
Sofia's words pull me out of my daze. I know what I have to do.
I plant my feet and focus. My heart slows as I reach for a part of myself I haven't touched in years. Not since I became a doctor. That primal, animal instinct I spent so long learning to control. Even in human form, I know this is what shifting would feel like.
I open my eyes. My vision is razor-sharp. I take the spear from Sofia's hands.
I'm ready to hunt.
VeraThe pyre stands in the center of a wide open field, ringed by trees. Tonight the moon shines brighter than usual, with nothing in the sky to block her light. The bodies of our fallen warriors lie wrapped in linen, placed with care upon the pyre. There are far too many of them. Each step forward makes my heart sink further.Noah and I arrive at the ceremony, and most of the pack is already gathered. I notice right away that Eli and Lucas are nowhere in sight. I turn to Noah to ask, but he already knows what I'm about to say."They'll come. They just weren't sure if we'd want them here after everything that's happened."That answer is enough for me. We move deeper into the crowd, and just like before, people part to let Noah and me through. We find an empty blanket on the grass and sit down. Noah speaks up, breaking my thoughts. "This is strange. Watching wolves from this close.""How so?" I ask, actually wanting to know. I never considered it before, but just as wolves grow up hea
VeraI push the door open and find Noah sprawled across my bed, staring at nothing and deep in sleep. His breathing is gentle, without a care in the world. Seeing him like this brings a warmth to my chest. He's dressed in fresh clothes, probably brought by the warriors who share his build: dark blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I have to admit, nobody ever made plain look this good.I don't want to disturb him, so I creep to my bathroom and notice someone's been here. He must have showered and changed right in this room, waiting for me to return.I start filling the tub with hot water and healing herbs. That should be enough to work out the soreness in my muscles. My body doesn't mend as quickly as the rest of the pack because my wolf hasn't connected with me yet. That's why I've always had to be more careful than everyone else. It's what made me a skilled fighter: while the others didn't worry about their wounds because they'd be fine by morning, I had to think smarter and move f
VeraI make my way to the pack house, knowing Sofia will be on the top floor. As I walk the hallways, I catch people staring at me the same way they did back at the clinic. I'm not sure what to think about it, but honestly, I'm too tired to care. The day has been endless and it's not even close to being over. When I finally reach the Alpha's door, I pause. What if she's sleeping?*Come in,* her voice fills my mind. Sofia."The woman of the hour," she says gently as I push the door open. Her room is the biggest in the pack house, which makes sense. It's less of a bedroom and more of a private wing, with tall French doors stretching from floor to ceiling and a huge balcony beyond them. Her bed faces the northern wall, tucked between the two sets of doors.I walk toward her. She's propped up on the bed with the twins sleeping beside her, a pile of papers scattered across her lap."Alpha," I say, saluting her.We hold each other's gaze for a long moment, then drop the formality entirely.
VeraMy legs quit on me the moment the surgeon's eyes find mine. I hit the floor hard, knees first, then palms. My heart is slamming against my ribs like it wants out. This can't be real. The only father I've ever had cannot be lying dead on that table.I drag myself closer, tears already building behind my eyes. But when I get near enough to see the face on the table, something doesn't add up.This isn't Doctor Owens.I turn my gaze up to the surgeon, hope flickering back to life inside me, as he walks around the table and crouches beside me. His eyes are kind, but there's a weight of grief sitting in them."Vera, I take it. No, this isn't Doctor Owens. This is Nathan. He was one of the warriors stationed at the border when the beast attacked."Together we look at the warrior's still body. The tears I'd been holding finally spill down my cheeks."As for Doctor Owens, his surgery went well. He's coming out of the anesthesia now in a recovery space we set up in his office."The crying
VeraI lie there with my eyes shut, letting the last dregs of adrenaline drain out of me. My breath comes in ragged pulls, and a high whine sits in my ears from pushing my body past every limit I had. When my pulse finally starts to slow, I lift my lids and force myself upright. Every muscle screams in protest. The ones who had been in the clearing have all crowded around Noah. Eli. Me. And the beast. Now that it's out in the open, some stare at it with curiosity, others with plain fear. A few are bold enough to prod it with their toes, checking that it's truly gone. The thing doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Just lies there, a heap of what used to be a nightmare.Noah is stretched out beside me, still wearing his lycan shape. I rest my palm against his brow and wait for him to open his eyes.We did it.We actually fucking did it.Someone in the crowd lets out a howl of pure joy, and it catches like wildfire. More howls follow, then more. I can't help but grin at the sound. Around me, t
VeraThe beast comes at me full speed and I swear I've never been so grateful for my ten-mile-a-day running habit. Without it, I'd be chimera food right about now. All those wolves tearing at it, all those lycans throwing themselves at its body, and still its only focus is me. It wants me dead. Nothing else matters to it.Then I hear something new. More wolves. Running hard from the direction of the packhouse. Within seconds, around fifty of them burst into the clearing, teeth bared and ready. They must be the ones who were guarding the other borders.I need to end this fast. We can't leave the borders open for long and I can't stomach losing any more of our people.I sprint toward the incoming wolves, scanning for their lieutenant. I spot him quickly and cut my way over to him. The beast will be occupied with this fresh wave of attackers for a few seconds. That's all I need."I need you to buy me time! I have to get that spear out of its eye!"My voice comes out desperate. I can see
