Araminta led Aria to her room and offered her a set of new clothes, traditional garments unlike anything Aria had ever worn before. There were no dresses here.

First, Araminta handed her a plain white skirt that reached mid-calf, simple and light, to be worn as an undergarment. Over it, she wrapped a long brown cloth around her waist, folding and tucking it neatly so it fell like a skirt.

For the top, she gave her a fitted beige blouse with straps tied at the back. Aria had seen other women wear different versions, some with long sleeves, some with short, some with none at all but this one left her feeling strangely exposed. Still, she said nothing. If she was going to survive here, their clothes would be the least of her concerns.

“I know it isn’t what you’re used to back home,” Araminta said kindly. “But hopefully, you’ll grow comfortable in it.”

Aria gave her a small smile. “I’m sure I will. Thank you.”

“Let me do your hair,” Araminta offered, motioning for her to sit at the dresse

Marcus tossed her the pillow, and she caught it easily. “Your house is huge. I’m sure you can spare me the basement if you don’t want to give me a room,” she said.“You have a room,” he replied flatly. “This one.”He hated himself for second-guessing Saul. His brother would die for him—Marcus knew that—but right now, Saul’s anger worried him. Letting this woman out of his sight was dangerous. She’d probably enjoy the thought of driving a wedge between them.He couldn’t keep her around too long. If he did, she’d poison the unity among his people. He needed her only long enough to get his hands on the inventions, and then… he would end her.Marcus still couldn’t understand what his mother was thinking, forcing them together like this. He knew his people, he knew the law—chaos was coming. They hated confusion, and they despised doubt in their leaders. A king with a human mate was nothing but a threat to their survival.Ignoring her, he stretched out on the bed. The last few nights he’d

Marcus shifted, pain stabbing deep into his side as he forced himself to sit up. The bandages around his waist tugged, reminding him of the damage underneath. Taking care of him? What nonsense was this? The door creaked open and Aria stepped back inside, a tray balanced in her hands. She set it down on the nightstand and picked up a cup of water, holding it out to him. “Here. You need fluids,” she said. Her words sounded like care, but her face and tone betrayed nothing. She didn’t want him alive out of concern—it was for her own purposes. Ironic, really. She was the reason he was in this broken state, yet now she played the healer. His hands trembled as he took the cup, nearly spilling it. She caught it quickly, steadying it for him. He scoffed under his breath. Should he thank her? No. The thought was laughable. She lifted the cup to his lips, and he drank greedily. The cold water burned down his dry throat but brought relief at the same time. He sighed when it was gone, and she qu

Araminta had just been looking for Aria when she suddenly saw her son fall off the horse outside his home. She dropped the basket of fruits in her hand and rushed across the grass field while Aria hurried around the horse to come and see him.“Marcus!” She went to her knees beside him while Aria crouched next to his body. Araminta shook his and gently slapped his cheek. “Marcus!”She looked around panicked. “Saul! Kenan!” She yelled before looking back at Aria. “What happened?”The woman looked at her unfazed. “I believe it is his infected wound.”The place where this woman shot him. Anger raced through her and suddenly she wished to push her away. Saul, Kenan, and Joel were quick to come to her aid. Aaron came shortly after.“What happened?”“Help me take him inside.” She said. “Kenan, bring the physician.”Kenan left while Aaron and Joel helped each other carry Marcus inside. Saul turned his attention to Aria. “What did you do to him?”“He was sick, Saul,” Araminta said.“Because sh

Marcus stiffened. He didn’t think she would boldly put her hands on his bare torso. Her touch was cool and soothing in the fever that was burning his body. He was still fighting the infection and even a cold bath didn’t help.Having her very cold hands on his body did something else to him. He wanted her to cool him all over. Touch more of him but he knew that would inflame him in other ways that he did not wish to deal with.It was enough that she was dressed in this way that made his anger vanish so fast that it was embarrassing. He went from being utterly disgusted to being in awe. God. Animals could do better than him.“You are very warm,” she said and he could feel her breath against the nape of his neck. His whole body went rigid. “You might be sick.”“Well, I am of flesh and blood. What did you think would happen after torturing me?” He said steering his horse in the direction he wanted to go.“That is exactly what I thought would happen.” She said. There was something about th

With her fair skin and hair, Aria stood out as Aaron led her toward the stables. Every passing glance followed her, whispers brushing against her as if she were some strange sight. She wondered if Marcus knew or if he’d care that his younger brother was escorting her here. Would he approve, or would it spark another storm?First, it had been their mother showing kindness. Now his brother? Were they all being genuine, or was this some tactic to keep Marcus from breaking under her presence? Either way, it made her uneasy. The stables smelled of hay and warm earth. Horses of all colors filled the stalls some dozing, others nudging at buckets as a stable boy tended them. Back home, every family owned a horse, and she had once cherished her own until it was taken from her. Since then, she hadn’t allowed herself to bond with another.Aaron stopped at the stall of a chestnut mare and stroked her neck. “This is my horse. Her name is Honey.” A small smile softened his features.Aria studied th

“If you touch my sister”“You’ll kill me,” he cut her off.Aria gritted her teeth. If only she had been fast enough to stab him. She twisted her wrists, struggling against his grip, and tried to kick him, but the heavy garment restricted her movements.“You will hurt if you hurt my sister,” she said firmly. “Because that’s what hurts me the most.”His dark gaze held hers. “Good to know. Physical pain clearly doesn’t bother you. So hurting your sister will hurt you and if it hurts me too, I can live with that. Can you?”Her chest tightened. “No.”“Then don’t do anything foolish.”“Don’t worry. I make my plans carefully.”He arched his brow. “Trying to stab me isn’t careful.”“Then I’ll stab you more carefully next time.”That made him laugh. A real laugh, teeth flashing white, as if he was truly entertained by her boldness.Aria tried to use his distraction to shove him away, but he was too strong. “You’re funny,” he said, pulling her to her feet. She nearly stumbled into his chest but
