view moreDuring my lunch break, I sit in my office and stare at the certificate hanging on the wall. The elegant gold-framed certificate proudly displayed my achievements, showing that I had graduated at the top of my class with a Doctor of Medicine degree and completed advanced postgraduate specializations in surgery and internal medicine, accomplishments that few doctors could claim at such a young age.
Suddenly, my office door flies open, and a nurse runs in. I can hear her heartbeat rapidly pumping and notice the slight trickle of sweat on her forehead.
"Doctor Miles, you are needed in the emergency room."
"Right."
After graduating from university, I have been working with my professor at a private hospital. Loise Hospital was renowned as the best hospital in the country, known for its state-of-the-art facilities, world-class specialists, and groundbreaking medical research.
I quickly stand up and follow the nurse. Even though I am not the operating doctor during lunch, I am often called in due to my exceptional performance.
"What is the issue?"
"A man came in claiming to have excruciating abdominal pain. We tried to calm him down, but the doctor on call could not find a diagnosis." The nurse explains as we hurry down the corridor.
"Does the patient show any symptoms?"
"He threw up, but nothing else. We offered him some moderate paracetamol, but it did not help."
I nod as I hurriedly walk down the passage.
As I enter the emergency room, the strong scent of medication hits me. The emergency room is full of patients and nurses. I can hear the man groaning as I walk over.
"Hello, sir. I am Doctor Nadia Miles. Could you please tell me your name?"
My eyes quickly scan over his body. He is underweight, probably due to a loss of appetite, but his legs are swollen. His skin is also covered in faint scratch marks, and there are bags under his eyes indicating fatigue.
"Daniel Roberts."
He replies through his teeth, sending a nauseating smell from his mouth. I can hear his blood pumping through his veins, but the blood flow seems to slow down closer to his left kidney.
"Mr. Daniel, we need to take a blood sample."
He nods, and the nurse next to me quickly jumps into action.
"It's going to be alright."
As the needle pricked his skin, the smell of his blood filled the air. I could smell that his blood was not clean and was filled with toxins.
"We need to take this man to the operating room! His left kidney is failing."
I quickly gave the order, and the nurse obeyed without question. I helped push the man on a stretcher and prepared to perform surgery.
"Thank you."
He mumbled before going under anesthesia.
"Ready when you are, Doctor Miles."
"Right. The scalpel, please."
The surgery went perfectly, and the left kidney was removed. The blood samples returned, confirming kidney failure, just as I had diagnosed. Daniel's life was spared because of my quick actions.
"Nadia, I need to speak with you."
Professor Henry Maxwell, the CEO of Loise Hospital and my mentor, said as he walked into my office. My office was spacious yet organized, with shelves lined with medical journals, a polished wooden desk covered in patient files, and large windows overlooking the city skyline.
"Professor, how can I help you?"
"You took control of Daniel's surgery before awaiting the blood and test results. What if your assumption was wrong? You constantly bypass procedures."
"I did not assume. I knew exactly what the issue was and decided to proceed with the surgery."
"We both know that his life was on the line. The toxins in his blood were already starting to spread."
"I understand. Unlike other doctors in this hospital, you have abilities that allow you to be the best."
"Then you know I knew exactly what the issue was."
"Yes, but there are still procedures to follow. Humans will start to doubt your ability as a doctor if you continue to act like this. They don't know what you are."
"Well, it's not like we can come out and tell them that we're werewolves."
"I need you to start behaving like a human doctor."
"Even when there is a life on the line?"
"Yes."
I shook my head and crossed my arms over my chest.
"How can you ask that of me? My job is to help people. Now you expect me to sit back and wait when I could save someone's life."
"I'm sorry, Nadia, but I have to put you on a probationary period. You can no longer take control of surgery or make diagnoses."
"Am I being fired?"
"I don't know. A disciplinary hearing will have to occur, and the board will decide your fate. For now, you are only allowed to assist other doctors."
"Sir..."
"Is that clear, Doctor?"
I sighed and nodded. My career was on the line here... I couldn't take the risk of being banned from medical practice for life.
"One last thing. I need you to perform a private home visit to treat the billionaire president, Adam Flemin."
"Sir, surely I am needed here instead of doing a home visit. Send a new doctor..."
"He is a werewolf."
"Oh."
I frowned and realized I was the only one for the job.
"I will leave straight away."
3 years later…"Mommy, look, I lost another tooth!" Quin ran into my bedroom with a wide smile and held her tooth in her hands."Another one!" I happily gasped and picked her up in my arms. "The tooth fairy will have to visit again tonight.""Maybe this time I can stay up and see her…” She paused. “…him?” She tilted her head slightly as she asked, “Mommy, is the tooth fairy a boy or girl?""I don't know, maybe tonight you can figure it out." I winked, then continued. "Are you ready for kindergarten, my gorgeous daughter?"Quin giggled as I kissed her cheek and wrapped her arms around my neck to give me a hug."Yup! I just need to put my lunch in my bag, then we can go.""You are such a good girl.""Do you always have to go to work?" Quin frowned and looked at me with those big blue eyes."Unfortunately, yes, I do."Quin sighed as I put her down. She looked just like me in every way, but sometimes her father's personality pushed its way to the surface. Quin had Adam's temper and his ar
"Nadia, stop this nonsense and come back with me. It's where you belong." Adam said as he grinded his teeth together.I shifted back to my human form and watched as Adam’s nostrils flared as Quinton’s scent drifted off his clothes that I still wore."Just because I am your mate, it doesn't mean that you can control me.” I spat, tugging onto Quinton’s shirt as if to cover more of myself. “I should be able to choose whether I want to go with you or not!"Adam growled as he glared at me. He didn't like how I spoke to him."I am your Alpha! You will do as I say!" He spat back."Hey, dickhead! Have some respect!" Quinton yelled from the drivers window as he rammed an SUV into Adam’s body. The impact sent Adam flying through the air. His body slammed into the asphalt with a sickening crack, rolling several times across the road. Before he could come to a stop, bones snapped and shifted beneath his skin. Black fur erupted across his body as he transformed mid-motion. His massive paws dug int
The little heart softly beat to show it was there. I was a mother… yes, the baby was only three weeks old, but alive. Those motherly instincts set in as soon as I knew I was pregnant.I had to get away. The top deck would be less guarded, but the drop was higher. While the bottom deck risked the chance of being seen, it was easier to jump off of. I weighed my options. As I looked at the staircase leading towards the top deck, my hands felt unsteady. I decided it would be the best way to escape. As I quickly walked up the stairs, a bunch of staff workers walked past the bottom of the stairs. Thankfully, I didn't go towards the bottom deck; otherwise, I would have had to deal with them.I looked out into the distance and saw a bunch of ships.Quinton said the name would be in red.Two ships had red names. Fiona's Sail and Flora's Sail. My heart rate increased as I tried to remember the name of the ship Quinton said I should swim towards. For the life of me, I couldn't remember.I decide
Over the following days, Adam introduced me to parts of his world, and I learned that it wasn't only about pain. He taught me trust, communication, and confidence. We grew closer, and I began to understand why those experiences meant so much to him.As I walked through one of the shops on the cruise, I felt a small throbbing sensation in my stomach.I focused my power and tried to heal whatever was wrong, but it didn't help. My hearing increased, and when the ship sounded its horn, I covered my ears and fell to the floor."Urgh!"Once the sound stopped, goosebumps covered my skin and my body trembled. Very faintly, I heard a tiny heartbeat from inside my womb."No... it can't be..." I muttered as my hands started slightly shaking.I quickly grabbed a pregnancy test and sprinted back to my room.Ten minutes later, I sat on the floor holding the test. Two bright pink lines stared back at me from the small display window. There was no mistaking what it meant. The second line was just as
