The stranger's next words shattered something Lucien didn't even know he had lost.

Lucien stared hard at the hooded figure in the flickering torchlight of the underground temple. His chains rattled as he shifted forward. "Sister? I do not have a sister. You are lying to confuse me."

The figure laughed softly the sound echoing off the damp stone walls. "That is what they wanted you to believe Lucien. They took so much from you and made sure you forgot."

Lucien felt anger rise hot in his chest. "Who are you really? Show yourself and stop these games. I have had enough shadows and half truths."

Before the figure could answer the prisoner in the neighboring cell spoke up voice weak but steady. "Stop playing games with him. He has suffered enough already."

Lucien turned his head and finally got a clear look at the other survivor. A young man around his age sat slumped against the bars. Scarred face thin frame but eyes that still burned with life.

The young man managed a small smile. "My name is Cai. We were experimented on together back then. Side by side in those cold rooms."

Lucien shook his head confusion mixing with the growing headache. "I do not remember you. I would remember another survivor. Mara said I was the only one."

Cai smiled bitterly leaning closer to the bars. "You always protected the smaller kids even after they hurt you the most. You took extra beatings so we could rest. That was you Lucien. Always."

Lucien pressed a hand to his temple as faint headaches started. Fragments flashed through his mind. Distant screams. Heavy chains. Children crying in the dark. But nothing clear nothing solid.

In the forest above Riven's group tracked the strange six clawed prints through the snow. The bond grew stronger with every step pulling at Riven like a rope tied to his ribs. Suddenly he doubled over gripping a tree for support.

Thorne rushed to his side. "Riven what is it? Talk to me."

Riven gasped eyes squeezed shut. "I see his face. Not a vision. Not a dream. Lucien is crying. He is hurt bad."

Thorne grabbed his arm steadying him. "Can you see where he is? Anything at all?"

"No but I can feel him," Riven said voice cracking with panic. "The pain the fear. It is all flooding through."

Mara rode behind them quietly watching the exchange. Concern filled her eyes. Again she whispered to herself. "Too fast."

Both men briefly fell unconscious from the strain as the rescue team paused. Inside a shared dream they stood beneath a moonlit lake the water glowing silver and calm. Neither understood where they were or how they got there.

Lucien saw Riven and immediately relaxed his shoulders dropping for the first time in hours. Riven approached slow and careful. "Are you hurt? Tell me the truth."

"I do not know," Lucien answered voice soft. "Everything aches but you being here helps somehow."

"I am coming for you," Riven said stepping closer. "Just hold on a little longer."

Lucien laughed softly the sound tired but real. "You sound ridiculous chasing after your prisoner like this."

"You like ridiculous," Riven replied with a faint smirk. They stood closer than ever eyes locked and breaths mixing in the dream air.

Before either could say anything more the lake turned black and something beneath the water opened its eyes huge and hungry. Both men woke in terror gasping for air back in the real world.

The hooded woman finally removed her hood though she kept a mask over the lower half of her face. Lucien still could not see her clearly in the dim light. "I call myself the Veiled Mother," she said. "I did not bring you here to hurt you Lucien. I brought you here because someone else is looking for you. Someone far more dangerous."

Lucien demanded answers straining against his chains. "Who? Tell me what is going on. Why all these secrets?"

She shook her head. "Not yet. The time is not right. You must trust me a little longer."

Back in the forest Riven became reckless pushing the horses and men harder than they could handle. Thorne finally snapped after Riven ignored another warning about the terrain. "Think like an Alpha Riven. Not like a lovesick fool."

Silence fell heavy over the group. Riven turned slowly eyes dangerous. "Careful Thorne. Watch your words."

"No you be careful," Thorne shot back stepping up. "You are forgetting yourself. This is bigger than one man even if he is your mate."

The two nearly came to blows fists clenched and voices rising. Mara stopped them with a sharp command. "Enough. Save your anger for what waits underground."

Cai secretly whispered to Lucien through the bars when the Veiled Mother stepped away. "Do not trust her. She lies about everything."

Lucien leaned closer. "Who is she really Cai? Tell me what you know."

Cai looked terrified eyes darting to the shadows. "She used to work with the people who made us. The ones with the needles and the chants. She was part of it."

Lucien froze the words hitting like ice water.

Riven's group finally discovered the ruins hidden deep in the woods. The underground entrance stood already open like an invitation. Several bodies lay outside the opening. Not killed by blades or claws. Drained pale and empty exactly like the heir had been.

Inside the temple the Veiled Mother suddenly dropped to one knee breathing hard. Lucien caught her before she hit the ground. Black veins spread fast across her neck the same corruption they had seen before.

She grabbed Lucien's shirt fear filling her voice for the first time. "Listen carefully. It is awake. And it knows your name."

Before Lucien could speak every torch inside the temple went out at once. Darkness swallowed the room completely. A voice whispered from somewhere deep below smooth and ancient. "Lucien. Come home."

In the total darkness a pair of glowing silver eyes opened slowly. And Lucien realized whatever waited down there had been waiting for him all along.

The suspicion spreading through the hidden keep felt like poison in the water.Thorne pulled Riven aside in a quiet corner of the main hall. "I have been investigating those secret messages Alpha. Someone inside these walls sends information to our enemies. I have proof of three notes already."Riven kept his voice low. "Do not accuse anyone without solid proof Thorne. One wrong move could destroy what little trust remains among our allies. Watch carefully. Report everything to me first."Thorne nodded. "I will be careful. But this traitor knows our plans. We cannot let them keep helping Sable."Lucien noticed the growing tension during the day. He found Riven alone on the walls later. "The keep feels different now. Everyone watches everyone. I should leave again Riven. The conflict follows me wherever I go."Riven turned to him. "Running has never solved a war Lucien. You belong here with me. We face this together."Lucien looked out at the forest. "I see what this costs you. Your al

The destruction of the allied pack left the North in shock and Riven knew someone played them all for fools.Riven stood on the walls of the hidden keep looking out at the smoke still rising in the distance. He turned to Thorne. "This was no accident. Someone wants the packs to tear each other apart. We need to find out who."Thorne nodded grimly. "The council is already blaming Lucien for every death. They say his presence started this mess."Inside the main hall the council meeting turned loud fast. Garrick pointed across the table. "More packs will fall if we keep protecting him Riven. Lucien is the reason for all this death."Another alpha agreed. "Hand him over before we lose everything. The north cannot survive this division."Riven slammed his hand down. "Enough. Fear makes you fight the wrong enemy. Lucien is not the cause. Someone else pulls the strings and we will not give them what they want."Lucien sat quietly at the side of the room guilt heavy on his face. Later he foun

Sable's messenger left behind an impossible choice that hung over the keep like a blade. The council hall filled with shouting alphas as soon as the messenger rode away. Garrick pointed at Riven. "Hand Lucien over before sunrise. One life against an entire pack. That is the only smart move."Another alpha stood up fast. "Sable will destroy them if we refuse. Think of the families Riven. Your pride costs too much."Thorne slammed his hand on the table. "Surrendering him only encourages more demands. Today it is Lucien. Tomorrow it is someone else. We stand firm."Lucien stepped forward from the side of the room voice quiet but clear. "If my presence here brings this much pain then I will leave on my own. I will turn myself over if it saves innocent lives."The room went dead silent for a moment. Riven rose to his feet. "No. You are not leaving. Protecting our people does not mean sacrificing one of our own. Lucien stays under my protection. That is final."Garrick shook his head. "You

The arrival of Sable's army changed the air inside the keep to something sharp and ready to snap.War horns sounded from the borders as scouts reported Sable's forces setting up camps within striking distance. The hidden keep burst into full war preparations with warriors rushing along the walls sharpening blades and reinforcing gates. In the council hall voices rose hot and angry.Garrick slammed his hand on the table. "We negotiate now before more blood spills. Sable has four packs. We cannot win this fight."Another alpha leaned forward. "Fight and we lose everything. The north burns while you play protector to one man Riven. Send Lucien out and end this."Riven stood at the head of the table jaw tight. "We fight. Surrender is not an option. Lucien stays."Lucien listened from the side of the room. Later he pulled Riven aside in a quiet corridor. "That symbol on the gate. I remembered something today. It matches one from my childhood memories. The experiments. They carved it on the

The choice changed everything and gave them one rare day of peace.Riven walked the walls of the hidden keep with Lucien at his side. For the first time in weeks the air felt lighter. Warriors trained in the yard but no arguments broke out. Lucien glanced at him with a small smile. "You really picked me over your own alphas yesterday. I still cannot believe it."Riven shrugged but his eyes stayed warm. "I meant every word. Watching them turn on me hurt less than the thought of handing you over."Lucien stopped and faced him. "You are giving up so much for me. Your power your allies everything. Why do you keep doing it?""Because you are worth it," Riven said simply. "I see you now Lucien. Not the traitor. Not the prisoner. Just you."They continued walking. Lucien bumped his shoulder lightly. "Careful Alpha. People might think you like me."Riven laughed. "Let them think what they want. I stopped caring what they say the moment I chose you."Thorne approached them near the training ya

The room went silent when Riven chose Lucien over his own allies. They had barely returned to the hidden keep when the council meeting erupted into chaos. Alphas filled the long hall shouting over one another. News of another pack destroyed had spread fast and fear pushed even loyal warriors toward rebellion. Garrick slammed his fist on the table. "One prisoner's life is not worth the collapse of the north Riven. Surrender Lucien to Sable before we lose everything."Another alpha stood up red faced. "The bond clouds your judgment Supreme Alpha. Packs are turning against us because of him. Give him up and stop this madness."Lucien stood quietly at the side of the room looking tired. He finally spoke up voice steady. "If my presence causes this much bloodshed then I will leave the keep. I will turn myself over if it stops the fighting."The room erupted again. Voices overlapped in anger and surprise. Before anyone could respond Riven rose to his feet. "No. Lucien stays under my persona
