3 years after the rejection
Naomi looked at herself in the mirror and shrugged at how she looked, knowing that this was the best she was getting after 3 hours of sleep and running out of coffee. One of the main perks of working in computer programming is that Naomi could literally do her job from anywhere at anytime but every few months there was mandatory office time and she had to spend the next four weeks in the new headquarters for LiteGroup because they had hired a bunch of new recruits straight out of some very impressive colleges. but they had no work experience. They had no idea how to work as a team or how to work with Naomi and her management team so when they got drafted into the office, she was required to attend and show them the ropes.
Naomi didn’t begrudge it because she reminded herself we all started somewhere and needed that first help but at the same time, she didn’t exactly choose her current career for the socialising aspects.
At that moment there was a soft knock on her apartment door. Naomi answered and saw her Neighbour Lottie Norman was standing in front of her looking bright and cheerful as always. “Good Morning my darling girl” she said stepping into the small apartments living toom and embracing Namoi like she was her own child. “How is Alex today?”
“Grumpy” said Naomi. “He didn’t sleep well so his pattern may be off a bit today, all his medicines are ready as always and he is back in bed now but he hasn’t eaten yet” Lottie nodded understanding what all this meant. “It’s fine. Now go to work. I will take excellent care of him and when you come home come downstairs to my apartment and we can all have dinner together okay?”
Naomi gave her a grateful smile. She didn’t know what she would do without Lottie. She was Naomi’s Landlady and downstairs neighbour but she had become like a mother to her and she treated Naomis son Alex, like he was her own grandchild. Lottie owned the whole apartment block so she was home all day every day and was an amazing help to Naomi, never asking for anything in return.
“Okay, I better go before I am late and lose all credibility with my staff!” Naomi joked kissing Lottie on the cheek. “Call me if he gets any worse” she said as she picked up her purse and left the apartment.
Although the drive to work had been uneventful, all the way to the office Naomi had felt a sense of unease come over her. Normally this feeling started when she was in the house and was because of her worried for Alex but today this felt different. Like the pressure before a storm started, she felt like something ominous was brewing on the horizon and wished she could just drive back home and escape this sensation.
Pulling up at the office the sensation became worse, and Naomi told herself it was her paranoia. No one here knew who she was, and no one was going to recognise her. Naomi had paid a lot of money and put a lot of hard work into making herself a new person and there was no way she was found out. “C’mon Nai, it’s just nerves from going into the office. Just chill” she told herself as she took a few steadying breaths. Feeling calmer she climbed out of the car, walked across the parking lot and entered her office building.
As she walked into reception, she heard a familiar man’s voice call out “Well, well it’s the famous Natalie Lane gracing us with her presence”. She turned around to see her co-worker and only friend Jason smiling at her with his arms outstretched for a hug. Walking towards him Naomi gave him a wide smile. “Jason it is too early for you to be being this loud”
He threw back his head and gave a soft laugh. “You always make it sound like I am a trouble maker Nat”
“You are” she responded lightly punching his arm. “Been working out man? That almost hurt my fist!” Jason suddenly looked at her very seriously and bent down closer to her, his light green eyes inches from her own, looking at her intently “Yeah, wanna see the rest of it?” and then winking at her. For a moment She didn’t know how to respond until he laughed again. “My god Nat it is so easy to make you blush it feels almost unfair.”
Naomi punched him again. “Jackass” she muttered and started making her way to the lift. People were watching them as they walked together. Partly because of the noise they had been making but also because people found it hard not to look at ‘Natalie’ and Jason together. He was just over 6 foot and had that lean fit physique of a soccer player. You can tell he kept really fit but wasn’t bulky. He had family money so all his suits were tailored really well to make sure you never forgot fit he looked as well. Hidden under a mop of curly blonde hair that always needed cutting was a face that was handsome when he was in his normal stoic mode but when he smiled he had a beautiful smile complete with dimples and Naomi had literally seen a woman swoon over his smile before. One of the funniest things she had ever gotten to witness.
Naomi walked into the lift with him and looked at herself in the mirrored panel as the door slid shut. It had been almost 3 years since her transformation, but she still found herself a little startled sometimes when she saw herself in the mirror. Gone was her long white, blond hair, replaced by a jaw length black bob and fringe, her blue eyes were now brown, she had put on some weight as she had been too thin before. She always made sure to wear eyeliner and lipstick as well, so her lip and eye shape looked different. To anyone who knew meek and nerdy Naomi Clark they would never assume this confident vampy looking woman in front of them was her. There was also the help of a glamour spell, that made it hard to focus on her for too long and that helped hide her scent in case she did meet someone from her old pack.
Theon couldn’t grasp how Naomi was laughing right now, but she was. She was sat there telling him she died and chuckling to herself like it didn’t matter. Then the other part of what she said hit him. He had texted her?“I didn’t message you” he said in a strained voice “ well, I did message you but you got rid of your phone then I could never find a new number for you.”“It’s okay” she smiled reassuringly “I gathered it wasn’t you when Lilian walked in and told me it was all her master plan. I’m not going to sugar coat it, Theon, you’re taste in women is appalling and the fact that you couldn’t see she was a witch from a mile away, disappointing”Naomi pursed her lips in mock judgement, while shaking her head. Theon looked away, the guilt and shame he felt over the past suddenly making it difficult to look at Naomi and making it feel hard to breath in front of her.Maybe coming here was a mistake and he should have just left her be but then his wolf scolded him Man up Theon. You brok
The next day was a Saturday. Naomi had originally intended to spend the day with Alex going to a soft play centre and even though these places were her personal idea of hell she’d literally pay to be doing that rather than her actual plans, coffee with Theon. \getting herself out of bed was a chore but she could Alex wide awake and talking to his toys in the next room so she knew she had to get up and she knew that she couldn’t hide in bed all day, Putting on some jeans and a hoodie and Naomi decided if she was going to face him, she wasn’t going to hide behind the façade of Natalie Lane, so she dropped the glamour and the soft blonde young woman, of her past appeared before her.30 minutes later, after securing Alex with Lottie and a getting a much needed pep talk from her friend to get her out the door, Naomi arrived at the café she had suggested to meet at. She knew Theon was inside before she even went inside. Between the hum of the bond between them and being able to smell him
As Naomi finished her cup of tea, a second text came through, the one she had been dreading since Peter’s message landed. Theon: Hi. It’s Theon. Pete gave me your number. Please don’t block me. I can’t pretend to understand how you must feel but I need to see you. Can we meet and talk please?Looking at Lottie she felt a sense of panic rising within her. Lottie offered a reassuring smile “Maybe this is for the best.” Said Lottie “it might help you find some closure?” With that the older woman kissed Naomi on the top of her head and left her apartment.Naomi couldn’t do anything but stare at the message. It was like a bomb sat in front of her threatening to blow away her calm any moment. Can’t pretend to understand how I feel? She thought bitterly. Surely being the cause of most of the feelings he could take a wild guess. Realising dwelling on it wasn’t helping anything she continued to ignore the message and log into her laptop to get some work done, while Alex was down for a nap b
At the same time the two men were discussing her Naomi was arriving at her building and practically running up her front steps. She needed a hug from Alex and some words of wisdom from Lottie before she had a breakdown. The reality of what was happening was starting to sink in and she didn’t want to be alone right now.Entering her apartment her heart was warmed by the sight of her little boy sat on the floor playing with his wooden train and beaming up at her as he realised Mommy had walked through the door. To her right Lottie was in the kitchen making two cups of tea. The benefit of going to a seer when you were upset. The tea was already made.“Please Lottie” Naomi said looking her friend in the eye. “Please tell me you didn’t know about the bond?”Lottie looked at her sheepishly. “well…. I kinda of knew that you were still bound but I didn’t know he was about to walk back into your life until I had a vision. Probably about the same time you two found each other I’d say. Sorry hon
Returning to the building Theon found Peter waiting for him in the lobby. Seeing that Peter didn’t even look a little remorseful for his part in concealing Naomi from him Theon and hos wolf were pissed. Resisting the urge to grab him by the throat he walked past his Gamma and threw him a threatening look. “My office, now!” he growled. Peter diligently followed him.Sitting down opposite each other Theon glared at Peter.“How long have you been hiding her from me?” he asked angrily“I have not been hiding her from you” Peter replied rolling his eyes at his dramatics. “She has been hiding herself and I stumbled upon her, would be more accurate” Peter’s mind was racing a little as he realised if the Alpha asked him how he knew it was Naomi he couldn’t tell him about the scent of him from Alex”“I forgot how smart she is. Hiding on my own company. I never thought to look for ger on my own payroll?” Theon laughed admiring her audacity. “and the mate bond still there. We are literally desti
There he was. All 6 foot of his muscular gorgeousness stood before her with a grin like the cheshire cat, and one eyebrow raised, leaning in the doorway of the elevator. “Well, you’ve changed Naomi”. Her initial shock turned to anger as she sensed the smugness radiating off him.“You have got to be kidding” she responded feeling fury rising within her “That’s what you have to say to me? For fucks sake” she muttered turning and walking off in the opposite direction. Naomi always wondered what her first reaction to seeing him again would be. She thought it would be fear or horror bur the wave of anger that had swept over her at that moment shocked her. It wasn’t helping that Artemis was in her head telling her to go back and see their mate. He’s so close she was whining in her head god he smells like heaven. Naomi had to tell Artemis to calm the fuck down before she threw her in a cold shower.Naomi had just got as far at the sliding doors to the outside world, away from that smug alpha
