Danielle's POV

The ride at night is cold, colder than I expected it to be, and piercing into my skin the way a guilty conscience would. Not even a word was said, as I sit in the car with the guards firmly seated beside me like I'm some sort of a criminal that is being taken to prison.

My mind is filled up with worries as I try to convince myself that I have not made any mistake with my decision, and the shaking of the car at every rocky bump gives me a feeling that I might be wrong.

Despite my worries, I keep telling myself that I have made the right decision, that choosing to leave my family and go with him is the only way to save my pack, but, the truth refused leaving me, and stares me straight in the face.

I never really had a choice in this, I was coerced and forced. Sighing in anxious anticipation of the unknown, my gaze goes back to the trees that swerve by at every move the carriage makes.

It feels like the trees understand what had happened, and were sympathetically waving me goodbye.

Goodbye to my family, goodbye to the pack, and goodbye to the lovely life I had always imagined I would live.

All these goodbyes for what? To become another piece of worthless property to the cruel and ruthless Alpha who was deranged enough to consider wiping off a whole pack if I refused his proposal.

My eyes water, but I refuse to let it fall, I would never give Rhett or his guards that satisfaction of seeing me break.

The car soon stops at Rhett's territory, and we alight. The full and bright moon gave me enough visibility to see Rhett's territory, the land looks big, bigger than any pack that I had ventured into the past. Walking towards the gate with the guards while they pulled the car, I pause as I saw a figure ahead.

It is none other than Rhett.

I walk towards him as he stands still, his aura of dominance, speaking and announcing his position as the king here.

"You came after all," he says in a smooth and deep voice as soon as I get to where he is.

Anger wells up within me as I struggle to give a respectable response, "You gave me no choice, I'm here because of my pack."

And then I see it, his lips twitching sideways in a flash, "It doesn't matter why you're here, all that matters is that you're mine," he says, his eyes lingering on me with an unreadable expression.

Staring back at him made my body shiver in delight, but then I suppress it as he motions to me to follow after him.

Following after Rhett in his massive pack makes me realize something. And that is respect and loyalty resides in his people. Everyone is scared of the Alpha King, and they can't even hide it. Guards stop what they are doing and bow immediately we walk past, and warriors stand at alert until he passes. George has never been able to get our pack to respect him half as much as these ones are doing. This is new to me and I can't say that I hate it.

Until we walk through a room that seems to be bubbling with party.

Everyone stops dancing as the Alpha King walks past, and then I hear it. "That is the Alpha's choice, our Wolfless Luna."

Ouch! That stings, but I refuse to let it get to me, as I walk on behind Rhett, ensuring to keep my head high.

We soon get to my room, and it is a room with a massive bed on the eastern part of the Alpha's compound, and then he motions to me to enter, while he turns and heads back to goddess knows where.

Sitting on the bed as I study the room, a feeling of loneliness suddenly overshadows me as I begin to miss the memories I have of my family before George happened.

This place, even though it looks big, can never be like home. I miss home.

And then, another thought registers in my head again as I remember the stranger from that night. I would never get to meet him again because of Rhett's cruel demand. I lay on the bed and clutch the pillow, sad as I realize that my life is being played like a movie that I have no choice than to participate.

And then a knock sounds, rudely interrupting my thoughts as I lay in the bed, emotionally weak.

Rhett enters, his presence filling the room as I raise my eyebrow in annoyance. I had not told him to step in, and he did. And then I remember, he never needed permission after all, he is the Alpha King.

"You're still awake? he asks as he gives me an intent stare."

"Yes." A simple, short answer.

And then I notice something in his hand; a cup, which he places on the table.

"Come drink up, tea will make you sleep," he says, his face still unreadable.

"How do I know that is not poisoned," I ask snidely.

And then there it was again.

His lips curve in a not-so-smiling manner. "Danielle, if I wanted you dead, Tea would never be the means."

Wrapping my hands around the tea cup, I gulp down the contents, and whine a bit. It was just a little above warm.

"Are you angry?" He asks as turns towards the windows, his hands resting in his side pockets.

Anger isn't qualified to describe my emotions, and so I laugh, bitterly with a broken heart.

"Angry? Shouldn't I feel worse than that? My pack discarded me like a worthless piece of scrap metal, and you asked for me like I'm some commodity that was owed you. Now I'm here, in your pack, in your house, without even a choice, anger is not even qualified enough to describe how I feel." I end my monologue with a pant.

His gaze shifts away from the windows as looks at me, "You think you're of no value? Your pack is responsible for making you feel that way, but I? I never chose you out of pity."

"Then why did you choose me? Why me and not some random single woman?"

He sighs, and turns back to the window, suffocating me with his silence. Then he turns again and grips my shoulders tightly and says with a very deep and low voice, "It is because you are mine."

Rhett’s POVThe arguing had started before I even decided to settle down.“We cannot bleed our reserves for a war we can’t name,” one of my elders snaps, his palm striking the table hard enough to rattle the ink pots.“And we cannot sit on our hands waiting to be slaughtered,” Captain Rowan shot back from his end at the table. “Three border patrols in one week, Bram. Three.”I take my seat at the head of the table and the room goes quiet. Not immediately I sit, but reluctantly. Chairs scrape as I walk in. Eyes shift to me the way they always do during meetings like this, as if I carried answers all the time instead of responsibility.“Our supply lines are stretched thin already,” Bram continues, lowering his voice but not the conviction of his statement. “Rationing will cause unrest.”“Unrest is better than graves Alpha,” Rowan said.I lift a hand and then silence falls heavy between us, pressing against my ears until I’m keenly aware of my own breat

Danielle’s POV The weight of the wars over the pack for months is the reason Rhett no longer stays in our bedroom. I open up my eyes each passing day to an empty bed and that unsettles me daily. I blink, staring up at his sides and wondering when all of what’s happening will end—wondering when I’d ever get to wake up next to my mate and Alpha. With a lot swirling through my mind, I manage to stand up to my feet. I don’t hear the crack afar off at first. What I hear is Kaelen’s little morning giggles. The sound of delight he makes when he thinks he’s done something clever as a child. I’m seated on the rug now with my back against the sofa, sorting through a basket of his toys, wooden blocks, soft fabric animals, and a little carved wolf Rhett brought back from a border meeting months ago. Kaelen crawls towards me and for some reason a particular thought

WEEKS LATERRhett’s POVThe armor on me right now feels heavier than I remember. Not because it weighs more but because it’s been too long since I’ve worn it.The leather straps bite into my shoulders as I tighten them staring at my reflection, the familiar creak echoing softly in the armory. Steel plates settle over my chest, cool and solid, pressing against my ribs like a reminder of who I am supposed to be when the pack is watching. An Alpha, a warrior. A man to guard his people.Devon stands near the doorway with his arms crossed, watching me with a look I’ve seen too often lately, concern masked as irritation.“You don’t need to do this,” he says for the third time, frowning at me.But I don’t look at him, I reach for my gauntlets instead, sliding my hands into them, flexing my fingers until the joints move smoothly. “I do.”“You haven’t trained on the field in months,” Devon presses. “You’ve been overseeing, commanding, planning. MEANWHILE BACK AT MOONSHINE CLAN PACKGeorge’s POV“What’s the update on the borders?” I ask, pacing my bedroom, leaving both hands tucked into my pants. My mind, spinning from exhaustion and rage.“Nothing yet, but we’re working on it,” Maxwell, my most trusted warrior, says with a bow. Leaving me with the heavy thoughts in my head. The last time I stood inside Rhett’s pack, everyone pretended like there were no grudges made from the past. That was the first insult and the second was Danielle. She stood beside him, his arm resting with casual possession at her back, his fingers placed on her spine. Too comfortable for my wolf to handle, almost as though she had always belonged there and as though I had never existed.I remember the moment too clearly. The way she lifted her gaze when she heard my voice. She looked surprised at first but then something I couldn’t name fast enough before it vanished behind control flashed in her eyes.

Danielle’s POVThe mornings are the only time the pack feels soft to me. Times before the drills begin, before voices echo around the house and boots strike the marble floor of the mansion. Before the weight of being watched settles on my shoulders like a second skin.I stand by the window with a cup of tea growing cold in my hands, watching the fog thin over the courtyard below. The same space they have been training in the day before that. Warriors outside move in quiet clusters, stretching through the fields, laughing unaware that Rhett will push them hard again today. He always does lately and I understand why.I mean, peace never lasts long enough to trust it. Behind me, the room smells faintly of milk. And Kaelen’s toys lie scattered across the rug where I left them the night before, wooden blocks, a soft wolf plush, a half-chewed ring he insists on carrying everywhere.I turn in seconds, watching Kaelen lie on his stomach in the middle of the si

Rhett’s POVThe rest of the days of the month turn out to be days of non-stop training and now I’m more than exhausted from all the talking and yelling on the field. No more peaceful nights and no peaceful mornings either. Right now we’re only left with that thin, dangerous hour when instincts sharpen and wolves forget themselves.Frost clings to the earth like a warning, every breath I take fogs in front of me. The scent of sweat, metal, and damp soil hangs thick in the air, but I don’t find that to be anything to worry about.“Again,” I bark standing at the edge of the field watching them train.Groans ripple through the clearing, low and obviously frustrated, but no one argues. I mean no one dares. Steel flashes as blades lift once more. The warriors right now are already exhausted, with their arms trembling, shoulders stiff, lungs burning but I don’t call it quits.I won’t. Not today. They form pairs again, boots crunching against gravel and froz
