Chapter 2

Penulis: Jasmine Flower
After I lowered my head and apologized that day, I thought the packhouse might stay quiet for a few days.

I was wrong.

From that moment on, Mrs. Hale seemed to find the sharpest blade she could use against me. She stopped humiliating me in private and started doing it in front of guests, calling me that Omega who could not give the pack an heir without the slightest restraint.

All I could do was stand there with stinging eyes and pretend I did not hear.

That morning, my head hurt so badly I could barely think. I dropped a bowl, and it shattered on the floor.

Mrs. Hale’s face changed at once. “What can you do right? You cannot even hold onto a bowl. Are you worse than the lowest wolf servant in this house?”

“It slipped,” I said quietly. “I’ll clean it up in a minute.”

“It slipped?” she said with a cold laugh. “You’re an Omega with no wolf soul. Other than clinging to the Alpha’s mate bond, what exactly are you good for?”

Then she grabbed my arm. “I’m talking to you. Have you gone mute?”

She dragged me out of the kitchen and shoved me into the center of the main hall.

“Look at her,” she said to the women gathered there. “She’s been sitting in Blackthorn’s future Luna’s place for years, and her womb has stayed empty the whole time. Now she cannot even manage a meal.”

I lowered my head and said, “I’m not feeling well today. Could I please go lie down for a while?”

“Lie down?” Her voice rose at once. “What right do you have to rest?”

“This packhouse feeds you. Adrian protects you. You do not have to scrape for survival like other Omegas. You do not have to work the lower levels like the wolf servants. You stay inside all day, and you still cannot manage this much. And now you want to talk about feeling unwell?”

Every eye in the room was on me.

They were watching me the way people watch a public disgrace.

I lowered my gaze and sent Adrian a message.

Can you come home? Your mother is doing this again.

He did not answer.

Ten minutes later, I sent another.

I’m sick. My head really hurts. Can you please come see me?

Still nothing.

The voices in the hall kept coming.

One woman said a mate who could not produce an heir should have the decency to step aside.

Another said that in any other pack, an Omega like me would have been sent to serve in the lower shrines long ago and never allowed to remain in the Alpha’s residence.

I blacked out.

When I opened my eyes again, it was already later, and Adrian had finally come back.

I told him what had happened that day.

He did not even look at me.

“Adrian, I...”

“Mom already told me,” he cut in, impatient. “How big of a deal was it really? Did you have to turn it into this?”

I stared at him.

“She humiliated me in front of other people. I felt awful.”

He frowned, and there was nothing soft in his face.

“She’s my mother. She’s an elder. Can’t you let her have her way for once?”

Then his voice turned colder.

“You spend all day in this house. You do not deal with pack council business. You do not handle border patrols. You do not worry about money. And somehow you still manage to throw the whole household into chaos. Can you stop looking for problems?”

I went still.

I had protected the one secret that could have destroyed an Alpha.

I had given up my studies, my future, and the life I wanted for him.

I had endured his mother trampling over me again and again.

And in the end, all he saw when he looked at me was trouble.

After that, he stopped coming home at night.

He had an excuse every time. Council business. Pack matters. Something that needed his attention.

That evening, he told me again that the council was keeping him late.

For once, I did not believe him.

I followed him.

He drove east, toward Silver Bay. Then he pulled up in front of a private villa.

I stayed back and watched.

The front door opened, and a woman ran straight into his arms.

“Adrian, you’re finally here. The baby missed you.”

Under the light by the doorway, I saw her face clearly.

Lydia Ashcroft.

The daughter of the Alpha of Redcliff Pack. The same woman Mrs. Hale had once praised at the full moon banquet for her bloodline, the same woman she had called the perfect mother for Blackthorn’s future heir.

And her stomach was already beginning to swell.

His company moved to the edge of ruin.Lydia refused to dissolve her bond with him.Without the child and abandoned by the Beta who had gotten her pregnant, Adrian was all she had left. She made it clear to everyone.“He ruined my life. I’ll ruin his too.”She fought with Mrs. Hale every day, from morning until night.Mrs. Hale called her a whore.Lydia called her a rotting old tyrant. The neighbors compla

After I returned to the Northern Direwolf Dominion, I picked herbal medicine back up again. My father brought in the best healer-scholars he could find. At first, no one believed I would last. I had spent too many years as a housebound mate in another pack, too many years being told I was fit for nothing beyond service and silence.I did not care.I stayed in the apothecary from morning until night, grinding roots, studying tinctures, memorizing old formulas, learning how each herb changed under heat, under moonwater, under blood. Before long, my teacher realized I was not only keeping up. I understood the work. In some areas, I understood it faster than many of his other students ever had.He stopped holding back after that.He taught me everything he knew.Three months later, I developed a new healing compound. It worked twice as well as the old remedy the Dominion had used for years. The elders tested it themselves.“This was made by you?”“Yes.”They exchanged glances and said noth

The day I returned to the Northern Direwolf Dominion, a black Maybach was waiting for me the moment I stepped off the train. One of the men by the car opened the door for me.“Miss Quinn, the Alpha King sent us to bring you home.”The car drove through the gates of a vast estate and up a long stone drive.A middle-aged man was standing at the entrance when we arrived. There was silver at his temples. He looked worn in the way people do after carrying grief for too many years, but his eyes were fixed on me with something so raw and hopeful that my chest tightened.“Serena?” he said, his voice unsteady. “Are you Serena?”I nodded, and suddenly my throat hurt.He crossed the distance between us in seconds and pulled me into his arms.“My daughter,” he said. “My daughter. I finally found you.”His voice shook against my hair.I stood there in his embrace, and for the first time in years, I let myself cry without holding anything back.Twenty-six years ago, his family had been attacked near

Once the mating ceremony was called off, word about Adrian Hale’s infertility spread through Blackthorn Pack before the day was even over.He went straight to the hospital and demanded a second examination. The result was the same. This time, the physician delivered it in front of several pack elders.“Mr. Hale, your condition is congenital. There is no treatment that can change it.”He paused, then said it even more plainly.“That means you cannot father a child with any woman.”Adrian sat in the consultation room without speaking for a long time. When he returned to the packhouse, people were already looking at him differently. Heads turned when he passed. Voices dropped, then rose again in mocking whispers. Some did not even bother lowering them.“So the Alpha was the infertile one all along, and he blamed his mate for it.”“He cast her aside and took up with a woman carrying another male’s child.”“And this is the wolf meant to lead Blackthorn?”The laughter followed him the way it

Before I could speak, Adrian finally seemed to wake up.He stared at me, then at Gideon Ashbourne, his face twisting with disbelief.“This is impossible,” he said. “Serena, what did you do? How do you even know the Wolf King?”His voice rose as he stepped forward.“You’re just an Omega. You have no awakened wolf. No family. No standing. You think you can pull some trick like this and I’ll believe it?”The guards moved at once, blocking him before he could come any closer.Gideon did not even look at him.He kept one hand on my shoulder and said coldly, “You are not fit to speak to her.”Adrian’s face went red.“She’s my former mate,” he snapped. “This is between me and her.”Gideon turned then, and the look he gave Adrian was enough to shut half the hall up.“No,” he said. “This ended the moment you cast her aside.”Mrs. Hale forced herself forward, her voice shaking now.“There has to be some mistake. She’s an Omega. She has no wolf. She can’t be…”“She is,” Gideon said flatly. Then h

I froze.Adrian had azoospermia. He could not father a child. My thoughts crashed into each other. I had to know whether the test had been wrong, or whether Lydia had lied to him.I went straight back to the hospital. The file said exactly what it had said before.Adrian Hale. Congenital azoospermia. No natural reproductive ability. No known cure for a congenital case.I took the report and headed home, ready to tell Adrian he was being deceived. Then my phone rang.“Ms. Serena Quinn, following a review of the Pack Population Registry and archived genetic evidence, your DNA shows a 99.9 percent match with Alpha King Gideon Ashbourne of the Northern Direwolf Dominion. Your identity has now been confirmed. You are the missing direct blood descendant of the Ashbourne line. Please report to the Security Bureau as soon as possible.”I stopped walking.Gideon Ashbourne. The Alpha King of the northern packs. The man who ruled the strongest wolf dominion in the North. He was my father?Back at
