A bone brush landed at my feet.

“Go scrub the stone corridor clean.”

I looked down at it and didn’t move.

Everyone in Blackthorn Pack knew what that meant. The stone corridor was cleaned by the lowest-ranked pack laborers, not by the Alpha’s mate.

“There are workers assigned to the corridors,” I said.

Mrs. Hale let out a cold laugh.

“I told you to go. So go.”

“That’s not a Luna’s duty.”

She finally looked up at me, contempt clear in her eyes.

“Luna? Zara, do you really think you’re a Luna? An Omega without a wolf, who can’t even bear children, how dare you speak of that title?”

My fingers tightened at my sides.

For five years, I had been with Adrian Hale, yet I never conceived a child.

In Blackthorn Pack, bloodline came before everything. So everyone decided the problem had to be me, the wolfless Omega.

I grew up in an orphan house, with no family and no one to rely on. The other pups called me a bastard, threw stones at me, said I was an empty shell abandoned by the Moon Goddess. Only Adrian ever stood in front of me and told me not to be afraid.

So later, when he proposed to me before the Moon Altar, saying he didn’t care whether I had a wolf or not, that he still wanted me as his mate, I said yes.

I thought I finally had a home.

But his mother never approved of me. She despised my unknown origins and impure blood, insisting we undergo bloodline and fertility testing, saying an Alpha’s heir could not afford even the slightest flaw.

The day the results came out, I learned the truth. The one who couldn’t have children wasn’t me.

It was Adrian.

He had congenital azoospermia. He could never produce an heir.

For an Alpha, that was a secret powerful enough to shake his position. But I couldn’t bear to destroy him, so I burned the report and took the blame onto myself.

From then on, all the disgrace was poured onto me.

They said an Omega who couldn’t bear an Alpha’s heir didn’t deserve to be Luna.

At first, Adrian would still speak up for me, saying he didn’t care about children and that we could adopt a pup from a collateral line. But as time went on, he stopped explaining.

Whenever I was hurting, he would only pull me into his arms and murmur that I should ignore them, that I should act like I heard nothing.

And I believed him.

It wasn’t until his mother forced me to give up herbal studies that I understood. In this pack, love was never the most important thing.

I had already received my acceptance letter from the Healing Institute of Moonridge Academy. I was one step away from becoming an herbalist. But she threw the letter in front of me and said coldly, “What use is this to a wolfless Omega? Stay in the main house and serve your Alpha. That’s what matters.”

Adrian stood with her.

“Mom’s right. You don’t need to go out and struggle. I’ll provide for you.”

I gave up my studies, but what I got in return wasn’t stability. It was deeper contempt.

In the main house, I was the Alpha’s mate in name, but in truth, I lived worse than the lowest-ranked wolves. Every day before dawn, I had to get up to prepare breakfast, check the storerooms, tend the hearth. Once the servants and pack workers arrived, I still had to stand aside and wait for his mother’s orders.

And now she wanted me to scrub the corridor.

“I refuse,” I said.

Mrs. Hale’s expression darkened.

I turned and went back to my room.

Not long after, Adrian returned.

He pushed the door open, didn’t ask a single question, and dragged me into the living hall.

His mother stood there looking wronged. A few servants and low-ranking wolves stood in the distance, heads bowed, not daring to look up.

“Apologize to my mother.”

I shook off his hand. “Why should I apologize?”

“It’s just cleaning a corridor. Do you have to make such a scene?”

“She’s humiliating me.”

Adrian frowned, impatience already creeping into his voice.

“Zara, don’t make it sound so ugly. With so many people watching, do you really have to make things difficult for her right now?”

He pulled me into the side hall, his tone softening slightly.

“Go out, apologize to her, and clean the corridor. When the council meeting is over tonight, I’ll stay with you.”

I almost laughed. He was always like this, acting as if a little comfort afterward could erase everything that came before.

“Fine,” I said. “I’ll apologize.”

I followed him out. Under everyone’s watchful eyes, I lowered my head and spoke.

“Mrs. Hale, I’m sorry.”

After I returned to the Northern Direwolf Dominion, I picked herbal medicine back up again. My father brought in the best healer-scholars he could find. At first, no one believed I would last. I had spent too many years as a housebound mate in another pack, too many years being told I was fit for nothing beyond service and silence.I did not care.I stayed in the apothecary from morning until night, grinding roots, studying tinctures, memorizing old formulas, learning how each herb changed under heat, under moonwater, under blood. Before long, my teacher realized I was not only keeping up. I understood the work. In some areas, I understood it faster than many of his other students ever had.He stopped holding back after that.He taught me everything he knew.Three months later, I developed a new healing compound. It worked twice as well as the old remedy the Dominion had used for years. The elders tested it themselves.“This was made by you?”“Yes.”They exchanged glances and said noth

The day I returned to the Northern Direwolf Dominion, a black Maybach was waiting for me the moment I stepped off the train. One of the men by the car opened the door for me.“Miss Quinn, the Alpha King sent us to bring you home.”The car drove through the gates of a vast estate and up a long stone drive.A middle-aged man was standing at the entrance when we arrived. There was silver at his temples. He looked worn in the way people do after carrying grief for too many years, but his eyes were fixed on me with something so raw and hopeful that my chest tightened.“Serena?” he said, his voice unsteady. “Are you Serena?”I nodded, and suddenly my throat hurt.He crossed the distance between us in seconds and pulled me into his arms.“My daughter,” he said. “My daughter. I finally found you.”His voice shook against my hair.I stood there in his embrace, and for the first time in years, I let myself cry without holding anything back.Twenty-six years ago, his family had been attacked near

Once the mating ceremony was called off, word about Adrian Hale’s infertility spread through Blackthorn Pack before the day was even over.He went straight to the hospital and demanded a second examination. The result was the same. This time, the physician delivered it in front of several pack elders.“Mr. Hale, your condition is congenital. There is no treatment that can change it.”He paused, then said it even more plainly.“That means you cannot father a child with any woman.”Adrian sat in the consultation room without speaking for a long time. When he returned to the packhouse, people were already looking at him differently. Heads turned when he passed. Voices dropped, then rose again in mocking whispers. Some did not even bother lowering them.“So the Alpha was the infertile one all along, and he blamed his mate for it.”“He cast her aside and took up with a woman carrying another male’s child.”“And this is the wolf meant to lead Blackthorn?”The laughter followed him the way it

Before I could speak, Adrian finally seemed to wake up.He stared at me, then at Gideon Ashbourne, his face twisting with disbelief.“This is impossible,” he said. “Serena, what did you do? How do you even know the Wolf King?”His voice rose as he stepped forward.“You’re just an Omega. You have no awakened wolf. No family. No standing. You think you can pull some trick like this and I’ll believe it?”The guards moved at once, blocking him before he could come any closer.Gideon did not even look at him.He kept one hand on my shoulder and said coldly, “You are not fit to speak to her.”Adrian’s face went red.“She’s my former mate,” he snapped. “This is between me and her.”Gideon turned then, and the look he gave Adrian was enough to shut half the hall up.“No,” he said. “This ended the moment you cast her aside.”Mrs. Hale forced herself forward, her voice shaking now.“There has to be some mistake. She’s an Omega. She has no wolf. She can’t be…”“She is,” Gideon said flatly. Then h

I had to know whether the test had been wrong, or whether Lydia had lied to him.I went straight back to the hospital. The file said exactly what it had said before.Adrian Hale. Congenital azoospermia. No natural reproductive ability. No known cure for a congenital case.I took the report and headed home, ready to tell Adrian he was being deceived. Then my phone rang.“Ms. Serena Quinn, following a review of the Pack Population Registry and archived genetic evidence, your DNA shows a 99.9 percent match with Alpha King Gideon Ashbourne of the Northern Direwolf Dominion. Please report to the Security Bureau as soon as possible.”I stopped walking.Gideon Ashbourne. The Alpha King of the northern packs. The man who ruled the strongest wolf dominion in the North. He was my father?Back at
