ODESSA:

The scream tears from my throat before I can stop it.

"Kade!"

I'm running toward the cliff's edge but strong hands grab me from behind, pulling me back. I fight against them, clawing and kicking because I need to get to him, but the beta won't let go.

"Luna, stop! He's gone!" Marcus's voice cracks as he says it.

"No," I shake my head violently. "No, no, no, let me go—"

The mate bond snaps and it feels like someone reached into my chest and ripped out half my soul. The pain is so intense that everything goes black and I collapse in Marcus's arms.

When I wake up, it's three days later and Sarah is sitting beside my bed. She tells me that Kade's body was never found because the fall was too far and the ravine was too deep and the current was too strong.

She tells me the rival pack attacked without warning and that Kade died protecting our territory. She tells me a lot of things but none of it matters because my mate is still gone.

"Two years," I whisper, staring at the ceiling. "We were only mated for two years."

Sarah squeezes my hand gently. "Odessa, you need to eat something before the funeral tomorrow."

"I can't eat," I say, my voice flat.

"You have to try. The pack needs to see you strong."

I don't respond because I don't feel strong at all.

The funeral is held under the full moon because that's our tradition. We honor our fallen shoulders when the Goddess can see us clearly from above. I stand at the front of the gathering in a black dress that feels too tight around my chest, making it hard to breathe.

The worst part is, thery couldn’t even find Kade’s body to bury, my mate is now nothing but a stone marker with his name carved into it.

Kade Alcide. Alpha. Mate. Gone too soon.

Elder Thomas speaks about how Kade was the strongest alpha our pack had seen in generations, how he was brave, honorable, and fierce in battle. I barely hear any of it because the words just blur together into meaningless noise.

Behind me, I can hear pack members whispering to each other about how young Kade was, only twenty-five, and how short our mating was, and what's going to happen to the pack now that we don't have an alpha.

I close my eyes and try to block it all out because I don't care about pack politics right now, I just want—

A collective gasp cuts through the clearing, and my eyes snap open immediately.

"Who is that?" someone whispers.

"Is that?...no, it can't be," another voice says.

"Oh my Goddess," Sarah breathes beside me.

A figure emerges from the tree line, silhouetted against the bright full moon behind him. He's tall and broad-shouldered, and he walks with this confident stride like he knows exactly what kind of entrance he's makin,g and he doesn't care who he's interrupting.

For a second, my heart stops because he looks so much like Kade, with the same dark hair and sharp jawline, and overwhelming presence that I almost think…but no, it's not him.

"Damon," Elder Thomas says, and there's shock written all over his face.

The name hits me like a blow.

Damon Alcide. Kade's older brother. The one who left five years ago after challenging Kade for the alpha position and losing.

They had the most brutal fight anyone in the pack had ever witnessed, brother against brother, ending with Damon being exiled. Kade never talked about him after that because the betrayal cut too deep.

Damon walks straight through the crowd like he owns the place, his eyes scanning everyone with this cold, assessing look until they finally land on me. We stare at each other for what feels like forever, and I notice his eyes are different from Kade's, bright green to his dark brown.

"I've come to claim what's mine," he announces, his voice carrying across the now-silent clearing.

Elder Thomas steps forward carefully. "Damon Alcide, you were exiled five years ago. You have no right to be here…"

"My brother is dead," Damon cuts him off sharply. "That changes everything."

"The pack has not chosen a new alpha yet. There are protocols…"

"I'm the eldest Alcide son," Damon says, his gaze sweeping across the crowd like he's daring anyone to challenge him. "By birthright and blood, the alpha position belongs to me."

Something hot and angry rises in my chest.

How dare he? He's been gone for five years, five whole years, while Kade worked tirelessly to build this pack stronger, protected everyone here, and earned their loyalty and love through his actions. And now Damon just walks back in and thinks he can take it all?

"No," I say, and the word comes out louder than I intended.

Every single person turns to look at me but I don't care. Damon's focus shifts back to my face and one of his eyebrows raises slightly like he's amused.

"No?" he repeats.

"You left," I say, and my voice is shaking but I force myself to keep going. "You abandoned this pack, you abandoned your brother when he needed you. You don't get to just walk back in here like nothing happened and—"

"And what?" He takes a step closer to me. "I'm here now. That's what matters."

"What matters is that you weren't here when we needed you!" The grief and rage that I've been holding back for days comes pouring out. "You weren't here when the Silverfangs attacked our border. You weren't here when Kade fought to protect everyone. You weren't here when he…when he…”

My voice breaks and I can't finish the sentence.

Damon's expression doesn't change at all, like he doesn't even care. "I'm here now," he repeats coldly. "And whether you like it or not, little Luna, you're my responsibility now."

The way he says "my responsibility" makes my skin crawl with something I can't name.

"I'm not your responsibility," I snap back. "I'm not your anything."

"Pack law says differently," he states matter-of-factly, then turns to address the entire crowd. "As of tonight, I claim the Alcide pack as its rightful alpha."

DAMON POV:I shift back to human form and don't bother looking at anyone as I stalk toward the pack house. My whole body hurts and I can feel blood running down my back from where Kade's teeth broke skin. The humiliation burns worse than any of my physical wounds though.I can hear people whispering as I pass but I don't stop to listen. I just need to get inside and away from all the staring eyes and pitying looks. The pack house is mercifully empty when I get there and I head straight for my room. My hands are shaking as I try to open the door and it takes me three tries before I finally get it unlocked.I'm barely inside when I hear footsteps behind me."That was quite a show," Alpha Richard's voice comes from the doorway."Not now," I mutter, moving toward the bathroom to assess the damage."I just wanted to say that I think Kade made a mistake out there," Richard continues, following me into my room without invitation. "Challenging you like that when you're both supposed to be wor

DAMON POV:"No," the word comes out before I can stop it. "I refuse."Kade's head snaps up from the maps and he stares at me like I just grew a second head. "What did you just say?""I said no," I repeat, and something dark and dangerous is rising in my chest. "I'm not stepping down, I'm not following your lead, and I'm definitely not letting you make all the decisions about how we rescue our mate.""This isn't up for discussion—""Everything is up for discussion!" I slam my fist on the table hard enough that some of the maps slide to the floor. "You don't get to just decide you're alpha and expect me to fall in line like some submissive beta.""I'm the rightful alpha of this pack," Kade says, his voice dropping to a growl. "I was alpha before you came back and I'm alpha now.""You were dead," I shoot back. "Or we thought you were dead, which amounts to the same thing. I stepped up and led this pack when no one else could and I'm not giving that up just because you're back now.""You

DAMON POV:Two days. It's been two days since Odessa was taken and we're no closer to finding her than we were when it happened. I'm losing my mind.I've barely slept, and I can't focus on anything except the horrible emptiness in my chest where Odessa's presence used to be. Every time I close my eyes I see her face, and hear her voice, and it makes me want to tear something apart. The guilt is eating me alive. Not just about failing to protect her, but about what happened with Aria afterward. The kiss, and the way I let myself forget about Odessa for even a second.Kade hasn't spoken to me since he walked in on that scene in my bedroom. He won't even look at me, he just moves around the pack house like I don't exist. And I don't blame him because I hate myself too.I'm pacing the length of my office for what feels like the hundredth time today when I finally make a decision. I can't sit here doing nothing anymore. I need to gather the wolves, come up with a battle plan, figure out w

  • The Wolves Howls Of Sin   CHAPTER 047

ODESSA POV:Everything hurts. That's the only thing I can really process anymore, just this constant ache that radiates through my entire body. My wrists burn where the silver chains cut into my skin and my throat is so dry it feels like I've been swallowing sand and my stomach cramps with hunger that I've been trying to ignore for what feels like days. But the worst part, the absolute worst part, is the silence in my chest where the mate bonds used to be.I can't feel them anymore. Can't feel Kade's steady presence or Damon's burning intensity or anything except this horrible empty void that makes me want to scream. Are they dead? Did something happen to them? Or is it just the wolfsbane blocking the connection?I don't know and the not knowing is almost worse than the pain.I'm lying on the cold concrete floor in the same position I've been in since they chained me here because I don't have the strength to move. The thin white dress they put on me does nothing to keep out the cold a

KADE POV:I stand frozen in the doorway trying to process what I'm seeing.Damon looks like shit, his hair is a mess and his shirt is half unbuttoned and wrinkled like he slept in it. There's a fresh bruise forming on his jaw that I don't remember from last night and his eyes are bloodshot with dark circles underneath. And in his arms is Aria, completely naked, sobbing against his chest while he holds her nightslip in one hand like he just took it off her.The rage that floods through me is so intense I can barely breathe."Kade, this isn't what it looks like," Damon says quickly, trying to push Aria away from him."Really?" My voice comes out low and dangerous. "Because it looks like you're standing here with a naked woman in your arms while our mate is out there somewhere being tortured or killed.""I can explain—""Explain what?" I'm yelling now, I can't help it. "Explain why you're in your bedroom with Richard's daughter naked? Explain why you're holding her like that?""She came

DAMON POV:"Aria, look, I'm not going to touch you."I get to my feet and approach her slowly, keeping my eyes on her face and nowhere else. She's trembling slightly even though she's trying to look confident, with her arms at her sides like she's presenting herself to me.I bend down and pick up the discarded nightslip from the floor, holding it out to her. "Put this back on.""But—""Put it on, Aria."She doesn't take it. Instead she presses herself against me, her naked body flush against my chest, and I can feel every curve of her through my clothes. Her skin is warm and she smells like flowers and something sweet that makes my head spin."Don't you want me?" she whispers, her hands sliding up my chest. "I can see it in your eyes, you want me.""I don't." My voice comes out strained. "I want my mate.""But she's not here." Aria rises on her toes, pressing her lips to mine. "I'm here and I'm willing and I can make you forget everything that hurts."I stand there frozen as she kisse
