TOMMY

My father did not look up from the file on his desk when I walked into his office.

"Sit."

I stayed where I was for a second, mostly because I had spent too many years doing exactly what Graham Lawson told me to do the second he said it. Then I pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down.

The office had not changed much since I left. Same dark wood. Same view of the city. Same expensive silence that made every person who entered feel like they were lucky to have been invited in.

TOMMYMy father did not look up from the file on his desk when I walked into his office."Sit."I stayed where I was for a second, mostly because I had spent too many years doing exactly what Graham Lawson told me to do the second he said it. Then I pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down. The office had not changed much since I left. Same dark wood. Same view of the city. Same expensive silence that made every person who entered feel like they were lucky to have been invited in.Graham finally closed the file and looked at me."I don’t know why you decided to go to Chicago because I hope that stunt won’t repeat itself," he said. "But if you are going to be in New York, I would rather have you where I can see what you are doing."There was no welcome home in his voice. No question about whether I had missed the city or whether I was settling in. He spoke about me the way he spoke about a department that had been moved from one floor to another."I appreciate the concern," I sai

EMILIAMargaret took Cole and I to a restaurant that was two blocks away from the office building. The man at the door seemed to be familiar with her because he gave her a warm smile as he opened the door for us.“Good morning, Mrs Pierce. Great day today?” He asked.Margaret returned the smile. “Everyday is, Anderson.”She must have sensed the curiosity in me because she turned. “Their food here is amazing, so I come by often for lunch and even bring clients sometimes.” She said. The restaurant was a bit more modest than what I would expect of Margaret. It had polished wood tables positioned to give each customer their privacy while still having that homey feeling.I could see why she would choose here for a meeting. The client would feel at home and at ease.Cole walked forward, and my mood soured. For a minute or two, I had forgotten he had been trailing behind me quietly. Now, I wondered why I had not made an excuse or two to get out of this.“You have a lot to say about me.” Cole

STEVEN“Daddy?” Estelle called, making me look up from the documents I had been reviewing.“Yes, baby," I said, putting the document aside when I saw the frown and pout on her face. “What is it?”It was after school hours, and when her nanny had gone to pick her up from school, Estelle had begun crying her eyes out. She insisted that she wanted to spend the afternoon with me. Bianca had flown out of the state for work, so there was no one else to look after her.“What color should I paint these?” She lifted her coloring book for me to see. It was the picture of a car.“Is that your homework, sweetheart?” I asked, standing up and walking over to her so I could crouch in front of her.“Yes.” She answered. “Daddy has a lot of cars, so I have no idea which one to pick.” She answered with a pout.I laughed.I sat on the floor, not caring that my staff could see me. “Well, baby. You would have to choose the one you like best.” I told her gently.“What about the blue one?” She asked after th

EMILIAThe numbers on the elevator told us we were close to our floor and Anna could not stop jumping.“Are you nervous?” I asked with a barely concealed smile.“You aren’t?” She asked, her eyes widening a fraction, “We are going to be working with new people. What if they are incompetent or rude?”I shook my head. “Why are you the negative one today?” I mused because that was usually my role.“It must be the New York water.” She sniffed dramatically. “No wonder you never see things in the positive light," she added, and I burst out laughing. When we arrived at our floor, I couldn’t help but let out a gasp. The office space assigned to us took most of the floor with glass walls, white desks, and windows that looked over New York City, like the place had been painted for our enjoyment.Anna pushed past me into the space. “At least, someone here knows your worth," she whistled, her eyes twinkling.I had to admit that I was surprised. I know Margaret promised us space to work, but I didn

EMILIA“Emi?” Someone shook me awake. “Come on, we need to check out. I can’t believe you are still sleeping. I told you to go to bed early because we have a lot to do today,” Anna complained while prying the covers off my body.I groaned and rolled to the side. “Come on, Anna. Five more minutes,” I said, blindly reaching for the covers, but I was met with the smack of a hand.“Sorry, missy, but I’ve never allowed you to sleep longer, and I’m not going to start today.” She said and forced me up.I opened my eyes to glare at her, but she only smiled. “Next time, when I say sleep early, you’ll sleep early because I am always right” she said. She pointed towards the clock on the bedstand. “Checkout is in thirty, so that’s how long you have to turn yourself from this mess to a powerful CEO,” She grinned.I rolled my eyes and climbed down the bed. “Aspiring?” I scoffed. “We don’t even have up to 30 employees.” I reminded her.“24, but who’s counting?” She smiled. “By the time we complete M

BIANCAI closed the bedroom door with a loud slam behind me. I paced the room, my head and heart pounding erratically.I paused at the door and listened to footsteps. For a second, I wished Steven would follow and apologize. I wished he would soothe my worries and promised me that nothing would change, but I knew better. As clearly as I knew that he would not sleep in our bed tonight like he hadn’t slept in it for over three years now.I shook my head for waiting pathetically and walked towards the dressing mirror to grab my phone. My fingers worked faster than my brain, and I was back at the site with the headlines that had bothered me all evening since I saw it.I remembered the chill that spread through my bones when I saw the face of the woman who had almost ruined my plans. She was back in the city like she never left.No.She was back better than she was.She left the city a beggar and a pathetic mistress, but now she owned a company.I glared at the picture of her smiling. “So,
