LOGINAyla Korr
I didn’t apologize.
It was the first time in two years that I looked at Darian and simply refused to do what he told me.
Obviously, he didn’t like it, and in the end, Vesper still got to keep my dress.
And me? I got my bedroom door locked from the outside.
No dinner.
No permission to leave until the next morning.
According to Darian, a few hours alone would be enough for me to remember how a Luna was supposed to behave.
I spent the entire night awake.
Not because I was hungry.
But because every time I closed my eyes, I heard his voice again.
You were given to me.
You should be grateful.
She is carrying the heir you should have given me.
When morning finally came, I no longer knew whether I wanted to cry or break something.
Maybe both.
The doorknob turned when I tried it.
Unlocked.
How generous.
I left the room and found the hallway empty.
For a few seconds, I enjoyed the silence.
Then I heard voices coming from the staircase.
“...they said she made Miss Hale cry.”
“Pregnant like that.”
“Over a dress.”
I stopped.
Two maids were downstairs.
They couldn’t see me from where they were.
“I always thought it was strange,” one of them continued. “Married to the Alpha for two years and nothing.”
“Maybe she’s jealous.”
“I’d be ashamed.”
I took a few steps, my hand tightening around the banister.
The other one let out a little laugh.
“Miss Hale, at least, is giving this house a future.”
I went down one step.
One of them finally saw me.
The conversation died.
Both of them went pale.
I stopped in front of them.
“Good morning.”
“Luna.”
Neither of them held my gaze.
They simply walked past me.
Behind me, the silence lasted until they turned the corner.
Then I heard the first whisper.
I only sighed tiredly and kept going.
In the dining room, the table was empty.
No tray or coffee.
No maid waiting.
I stood there for a few seconds.
Normally, even when Darian didn’t have breakfast with me, someone left everything prepared.
I rang the bell on the table.
Waited.
Nothing.
I rang it again.
A maid appeared almost two minutes later.
“Luna?”
“My breakfast.”
She looked at the table as if she had only just realized it was empty.
“I thought you weren’t going to eat.”
“Why?”
A brief silence.
“Since you didn’t have dinner yesterday...”
I stared at her.
“So you decided I didn’t need to eat today either?”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Bring me something.”
She nodded.
“Yes, Luna.”
There was no apology, much less any hurry on her part.
I sat down.
Ten minutes later, I was given cold bread, cheese, and lukewarm tea.
I looked at the plate.
Yesterday, that would have made me feel small.
That morning, it only made me even more tired.
I took two bites and gave up.
Maybe it would pass.
That was what I told myself.
Vesper had only been pregnant for a few weeks. The novelty would wear off. The servants would find something else to talk about. Darian would return to his own obligations.
Maybe.
I just needed to survive the next few days.
I left the room and thought about getting a sweater so I could go to the gardens.
It was the only place on that estate where I had never felt the need to ask permission to breathe.
No one went there.
My family wasn’t there.
Darian rarely went there.
The flowers didn’t know my wolf was weak.
That was enough.
I went to my room, and when I came out, I headed toward the stairs. I could already see the glass doors leading to the garden downstairs when I heard:
“Ayla.”
I closed my eyes.
Please.
Not today.
Vesper was near the grand central staircase.
She was wearing white.
At least it wasn’t my dress.
I walked past her.
“Ayla, wait.”
I kept walking.
She grabbed my arm tightly.
I stopped immediately.
I looked first at her hand.
Then at her face.
“Let go of me.”
Vesper removed her hand.
“I just wanted to talk.”
“But I don’t.”
“About yesterday.”
“Especially about yesterday.”
I tried to walk past her.
She stepped in front of me.
I took a deep breath.
“Vesper.”
“I’ve been feeling really bad.”
I almost rolled my eyes.
“I’m sure.”
“It didn’t have to end that way.”
I looked around.
I noticed something strange.
The hallway was empty.
No servants.
No voices.
Nothing.
That house was rarely completely empty at that hour.
My gaze returned to her.
Vesper smiled, and I understood.
“Where is everyone?”
“Everyone who?”
“The servants.”
“Working, I imagine.”
Of course.
I looked at the staircase beside her.
Then back at the hallway.
A bad feeling crawled over the back of my neck.
“I really need to go.”
I took a step.
She followed.
“You should listen to me.”
“I don’t owe you anything.”
Her smile widened.
“Technically, you do.”
I went still and turned around.
“What?”
“According to your own husband, you should be grateful.”
I didn’t answer.
She moved a little closer.
“It must have been difficult hearing all of that in front of the servants.”
My jaw tightened.
I stared at her face.
So this was it, this was her true face.
No tears.
No trembling voice or pitiful expression.
The real Vesper.
Ayla Korr“Maybe this isn’t the only child in this room whose paternity should be questioned.”For a moment, no one reacted.Vesper was the first to change. The hand she kept over her stomach tightened around the fabric of her dress, her fingers almost disappearing between the folds. Her eyes widened and immediately went to her father.Lord Hale stepped forward.“Be careful what you’re implying.”His voice came out low, but there was something in it that made me realize I had touched exactly where I shouldn’t have.I tilted my head slightly.“Funny. A few minutes ago, questioning the paternity of my child seemed perfectly acceptable.”A murmur passed through the Council seats.Vesper took a deep breath, trying to regain her composure.“There is no comparison between the two situations.”“Vesper.”Darian said her name as a warning. She fell silent immediately. He still seemed shaken by what I had just said about my child. His face remained tense, his eyes far too dark, and I could see
Ayla Korr“We need to find out who the father of this child is.”Darian reacted before anyone else had the chance.“What exactly are you implying?”His voice cut across the hall with such force and indignation that some of the conversations beginning to rise died immediately.I could see how his presence made everyone take a step back, but Lord Hale did not retreat.“I’m not implying anything... I’m simply pointing out the obvious.”Darian stepped forward, his fangs becoming more visible as he spoke.“The obvious is that this child is mine.”He said it without hesitation.I looked at Darian. He seemed completely convinced of it, entirely opposed to any theory that contradicted him. There was no maybe for him, no room for doubt.“Ayla is my wife,” he continued, staring at Lord Hale. “We spent two years trying to have a child. The fact that it didn’t happen before doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen now.”“Darian...”Vesper’s voice sounded low through the hall, and he didn’t even look at he
Ayla Korr“Ayla Korr is, very likely, pregnant.”I stood completely still, as if rooted to the floor, simply staring at the healer.I had heard every word. I knew what he had said. Even so, my body seemed incapable of keeping up with it, as if my mind had understood first and the rest of me needed more time.Pregnant.My gaze slowly lowered to my belly. There was nothing different there. No visible change, no proof that justified the way the entire hall seemed to have stopped because of me. Even so, I brought my hand to the fabric of my dress, almost too carefully, as if touching it might undo everything.A heavy emotion rose through my chest.I wasn’t prepared.I had imagined hearing that word so many times that now, when it was finally happening, I didn’t know what to do with it.I felt my eyes burn. I tried to take a deep breath, but the air came out strangely, accompanied by a small laugh I didn’t even recognize as my own.“By the Goddess...”That was all I managed to say.Caelan
Ayla Korr“Prove it.”Lord Hale’s words transformed the entire hall.Until that moment, I was still the woman they had just sentenced to death. Suddenly, everyone was watching me as if my body had become the only thing that mattered in that room. The healer didn’t argue. He set his case down on a nearby table and began taking out small bottles, cloths, and instruments I vaguely recognized from other examinations. That alone was enough to bring back a feeling I knew far too well.I sat when he asked for a chair to be placed in the center of the hall.I didn’t want to look at anyone.Even so, I could hear them.“This again?”“After all these years without managing to...”“How convenient that she turns up pregnant now.”A low laugh came from somewhere behind me.I tightened my hands over my lap, and Caelan moved closer, forming a barrier between me and them.“Don’t listen to them...”I looked at him.“That’s a little difficult.”He crouched until he was closer to my face, a calm but some
Ayla KorrThe man behind him stepped forward.“I should have been able to have her examined earlier,” Caelan continued. “But apparently someone decided it was more important to drag her here and demand her execution before I had the chance.”His eyes went to Vesper.Everyone followed his gaze, understanding perfectly what he was suggesting. She slowly stood, defending herself.“I... was worried.”Her voice came out softer than anyone there deserved to hear.“Ayla had already run away once. Darian wasn’t taking any steps to bring the situation before the Council, and I... I was only thinking about the safety of our House, the safety... of our baby.”Darian let out a low laugh, visibly incredulous at all of it.Vesper looked at him, her eyes filling with tears.“Darian...”“You came to the Council without speaking to me.”The way he looked at her, the way he spoke, seemed to hurt her. Then she returned to her nearly flawless performance.“You were allowing everything to get worse. I did
Ayla KorrEveryone stood still, watching them enter. The doors were still swinging behind them when Caelan found me in the center of the hall. His gaze moved over the guards holding my arms, my disheveled hair, and finally the side of my face that was still burning from the slap. His expression changed so quickly that I almost didn’t recognize my brother.“Take your hands off her.”The guards hesitated.Caelan crossed the hall without slowing down.“I said let go of my sister.”“Lord Varen, she is under Council custody—”“I didn’t ask under what authority you think you can treat her this way.”He reached me and tore one of the men’s hands away from my arm. This time, no one tried to stop him.I think it was only then that I managed to breathe properly.“Caelan...”He pulled me close. The hug was quick, too tight for the state I was in, but I didn’t complain.“I’m sorry,” he murmured near my ear. “It took me a while, but I did it.”I looked over his shoulder.Darian remained near the d
