They got ready and were all seated in the living room waiting for William to return with the registrar. It had been more than thirty minutes since he left. Only a few seconds ago Olivia's Mother had entered the mansion with baby Audrey, she joined the other women in the living room, feeling uncomfortable most of the time.
The room was as silent as a desert, the women said nothing to each other only when they had exchanged greetings. They sat on the large chairs looking all clean, classsic and gorgeous! Audrey slept peacefully in her grandma's arms. Viola couldn't bear the silence anymore so she got up and went into the kitchen with the thought to make some tea. She quickly lit the stove, balanced a small silver kettle filled with water on the flames. Then she set up ten small-sized silver teacups on a silver tray, the cups beautifully surrounded a silver slim jug which sat in the middle of the tray, the mouths of the cups were turned upside down on the surface of the round tray; awaiting to serve their purpose. The kettle began to whistle, while steam rushed out of the spout announcing the boiling water. Viola put out the stove, took out the four teabags she had boiled in the water, and filled the jug in the tray with all the content of the kettle. Then she brought out a bottle of sweetened milk and emptied it into another smaller jug in the tray, she found a spot inside the tray for a cute little sugar cup which was filled up with white grains of sugar. She had decided in her mind that she would put both sugar and milk in the tray alongside the tea, so that the people in the living room could add whichever one they wanted to their tea. She piled up ten or eleven silver saucers near one of the teacups, ten white small teaspoons rested on each other close to another one of the teacups. Then she exhaled and smiled, knowing that her tray was rightly set! She bent her knees a little, placed both hands on the sides of the tray, added more strength to her arms and lifted up the silver tray from the kitchen table. Slowly, carefully and graciously, she glided through the smooth floor, hoping to successfully reach the living room. Her heart smiled when she finally placed the tray on the centre table in the room. All the ladies in the room fixed their eyes on Viola as she brought out the cups from the tray, placed each cup on a saucer, added a spoon beside the cup and she positioned each set in front of every person seated. Viola looked into each one's face to confirm if they wanted the tea and each time she got her answer, she would pour the black tea in the little cup. Then she would ask if they wanted milk or sugar or maybe both. The women would either reply with a yes or no, or a nod of the head. Viola served them well, she played the role of a hostess for the day, and she felt satisfied when she returned to her seat. She filled her cup with some tea, added some milk and a teaspoon of sugar, then she stirred her tea with a spoon-- graciously! While the women sipped their tea like princesses, and swallowed down the liquid which caressed their throats and warmed up their insides, the front door flung open and the long awaited William stepped into the hall. At the sound of the door and the footsteps on the floor, the ladies turned their heads swiftly, in the direction of the sounds their ears had tuned to. William had arrived with the Registrar, along with two other persons. He locked the door behind them, and in a few seconds, they joined the ladies in the living room. "Please seat!" William gestured and directed the other three to their seats. "Thanks for coming!" Mrs Johnson added. Everybody balanced their behinds well on the seats, some twisted their bodies, some cleared their throats and exhaled, they were determined to make themselves comfortable. "This is Mr Blackstone, the Registrar", William pointed to a white man in his late 50's, he wore a black suit, tie and a black pair of trousers. His age reflected on his face, he had the perfect brown hair and a grey pair of eyes, his face held a calm feeling to it. "These are Margaret and Chris", William pointed to the other two strangers, "They are to serve as more witnesses for the wedding", he paused, searching into everyone's faces, but the others only responded with a nod or a smile. "You're all welcome! Mr Blackstone, shall we begin?", Amelia put in. William glanced at her and rested his hand on her shoulder. "Yes, of course, moving on to it", Mr Blackstone began to set his briefcase on one of the other tables in room-- which was carrying a lamp. The man brought out some legal documents and a seal. "This is strange, yet oddly exciting!" Viola mentioned in a cool tone to fit the room's atmosphere. "Definitely!" Monica confirmed and chuckled towards Viola. "Please, the two that are to be wed, should stand here", Mr Blackstone pointed to the space in front of him. Olivia and William stood up and moved to where the registrar was; they maintained a space between themselves. "Your names, please?" Mr Blackstone inquired. "William .A. Johnson". The registrar began to write. "Olivia Ayers" they responded. The man took down both their names and released a breath. He took two papers in his hand, stood up in front of Will and Olivia and began to speak some words slowly. Will's heart began to race, he was glad that only he could hear it, the anxiety he felt made him blind to the words Mr Blackstone said. "Now, do you William .A. Johnson, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, to cherish and to love, from this day forward till death do you part?" To William, the rest of the world did not exist at this moment, he could feel his breath seize, the room became warmer, he began to sweat. "Will?" Olivia shook his shoulder and spoke with her eyes. "Huh? Oh yes, I'm sorry, what's the question again?", he rubbed his eyes, inhaled deeply and exhaled. Mr Blackstone had no choice but to repeat the question for him. This time, Will heard and understood the question, he had no choice but to answer. "Yes, I do!" William supplied dryly. "And do you Olivia Ayers take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, to honour and obey, from this day forward till death do you part?" "I do!" Olivia responded sharply. William became deaf to the world again and the registrar had begun speaking again. "The rings! Mr William?" "Oh yes!" Will dipped his hand in his pocket and brought out a little black ring box, he plucked out the rings from the holder, held them in his palm and kept the box back in his pocket. He slipped one of the rings on one of the fingers on Olivia's left hand, sharply. Olivia took the other ring from him and did the same to William's finger, it felt smooth, round and cold to William's skin. Mr Blackstone pronounced them man and wife and suggested that William should kiss his bride. Olivia and William turned to face each other, they drew closer to each other's chest, positioned their faces to allow their lips collide, and they kissed faintly then returned to their first positions. "Now for the papers", Mr Blackstone said and pushed the license towards them. William leaned over and scrawled his name and signature on it, Olivia did the same. The other necessary persons, also signed the wedding license, Mr Blackstone was last to sign, he did so and blotted all the signatures. "It is done!" The registrar announced. Everyone in the room clapped. Viola served some more tea and they all had their fill. The next day, Olivia brought in her belongings along with Audrey to the mansion.LONDONRYE, EAST SUSSEX TOWNMERMAID STREET.2005************Chapter 11 Do you remember William? Oh of course you do! It had been fifteen years since William became a married man and you know by now that has two beautiful wives! It would greatly interest you to know that he now has ten children, and a house full of relatives! The William .A. Johnson family turned out to be a strange and crazy neighbour to the others on Mermaid street. Every home, street, farm, market and hospital knew of the strange Johnson family. Amelia had three boys and two girls, while Olivia had two boys and three girls! The two women got along just fine, in their own way. They occasionally had their differences but they had a soft spot for each other. When Amelia lost her Mother, her Father came to live with her in the mansion. Amelia's father and William's mother came to be known as Grandpa and Grandma. They never had anything to do in the house, they continued to grow old in their peaceful environment,
Though, Rye town was a little one, it had everything it needed. A beautiful place to live in. A town with busy people and busy lives-- Rye only knew peace and quiet during the weekends. One of the hospitals in Rye, needed a doctor not just any doctor, an eye doctor, An optometrist! Dr Joe was summoned from one of the cities in London. He was to fly in on Monday and travel down to Rye. He would save the eyes of many patients. He would also teach other young Doctors of his practice and when they were ready for the task, the Doctor would return home. Arrangements had been made for him in respect of his accommodation. A letter had been sent to one of the families on Mermaid street asking for their permission to allow Dr Joe live as a guest in their home only for a few weeks until he's found a place of his own; the kind family agreed to this! For the first time in his life, Joe laid down his feet on Rye's soil. A beautiful place, he thought to himself. I think I'll like it here!
It was seven in the evening already and every family member of the Johnson's had found their way back to the dark home. "Thanks for that awesome meal, that's the best thing I've had in years!" Joe had just hungrily emptied a plate of hot spaghetti and a couple of meatballs. "I'm glad you love my cooking" Viola blushed. The kids began to giggle, "Aunt V likes Joe o, Aunt V likes Joe o" they teased them and fled the room still giggling. "Don't pay attention to them, they're kids" A shy Viola put in. "Uh huh, yeah I guess so", Joe nodded. "So! Why don't I show you to your room?" Viola snapped, trying to ease the atmosphere. "Yeah, okay!" The Johnsons had spent a whole lot of money and time building the mighty house. Their's were the largest on the street, it was always dark on the inside, just like the other houses on the cobbled street. The houses on Mermaid street were closely lined up, the shades from each house shadowed the windows. But there was som
"Shh! We can't afford to wake him up!" "Everybody, focus!" "Do we really have to do this?!" "Yeah, we have to know the person we've let into our home!" "Keep your voices down guys. I gave him one of the hints in the book". "Alright, that's rule number what?" "Monica, bring out the rule book". "Oh here it is, rule number four, 'To find the key, you must first unlock the door, find two keys and begin your journey'". "Oh no you guys, go easy on him, he seems like a nice guy!". "That's not important for now, let's get on with it, shall we?" "Ok so, what's quest number 4?" "Sleep walking!" Uncle Millie rubbed his palms against each other with excitement and brought out a large candle. William sprayed some paprica on the lit candle and everyone present, smiled mischievously. "Seven candles, for seven nights!" "Hahaha, let the show begin!" A party of seven tiptoed on to the guest section. The unknown candle was placed on the ground in front of Joe's room. It's scent and smoke w
"That was so fun!" "Did you see that? I slipped on ice!" "This is so unfair, I should've won!" "Well you were too slow, boo-hoo!" "In your face! Chubby". He stuck his tongue out. "Oh my God! Kids kids! Calm down. Go to your room, shower and go to bed!" Amelia ordered. They all had returned from the park. Some played on ice, some played football, others enjoyed bowling; even though the ball was too heavy for them. The old folks were asleep somewhere in the house. William wasn't coming home today, Viola and her sisters-in-law, just had some quality time with the kids. "Aww, mum! No dinner?" "Not when you guys are so noisy". Amelia answered. "Remember you kids are black, not barbarians!", Olivia added. "Wow! Something smells nice". They began to sniff in the aroma. Everyone ran up to the kitchen to find the chef. "Hey guys! Welcome, welcome. Have your seats, cause dinner's ready!" "Yaaaay!" The kids happily reacted. "You can cook?" Caro wondered. "You are an interesting man
Joe, by now had become used to the way the Johnson's door freely flung open, all he had to do was walk into the house; after all, he was a freeman in the house now, so he thought. Now and then he recalled his first day in the Mansion, all he could was chuckle at the memory. He swung himself on to the bed and decided to watch some TV. An hour later, a soft knock came at the door, Joe quickly went to the door and brought it to his command, he found two little kids staring at him with large innocent eyes and a large cup of smoothie with one of them. "Hey Karen, hey George! What you guys doing here?" "We brought this for you!". "Thanks! It's been all while since I had a smoothie. Uh– would you like to come in?" The kids entered the room excitedly and sat on the large sofa. "When did you guys return?" "Few minutes ago!", Christian answered. "So, how was school?" "Good!" They chorused. "Okay– ", Joe looked up at the ceiling and then back at the kids, not knowing what else to say. "I
Joe laid on his kingly bed, spending the time away chatting. He scrolled through the messages on his phone— the chats he hadn't had time to reply to, were all lined up. Soon, he fell asleep; sleep was something every person had to obey, and the young man was exhausted. The large clock in the hall struck 11pm and all the while it had sounded so loud, old and dusty, it never seemed to disturb anyone whenever it spoke out with its loud voice. Joe had slept soundly these past nights despite the old clock's chime. Strangely, this time around, the doctor's eyes sprung open at the sound of the round clock. His eyes blinked flutteringly, His heart raced— he could hear it beating almost as if it would burst out from his chest; but it didn't! His eyes hung open, heavily. His dark skin tingled and ached. Instantly, he felt cold and his teeth clattered. He felt stiff, but somehow managed to come to his senses. He gasped in shock, realizing where he was. Quickly, he stood up from the bed and st
Another howl alarmed him, this time it sounded close. He turned his head and eyes in every direction, he broke a sweat, his heart froze. His head and eyes ached; for he knew the howling was for him. He continued his trek— slowly yet boldly, he was back in the middle of the tall frozen trees and the air felt more chilly. Two golden bright eyes came lurking in the misty shadows, two became four and four became ten eyes! The winter wolves had decided to come face to face with the stranger in their territory and Joe was frightened as hell. The white canines were beautiful creatures, but the doctor knew he wasn't to be fooled by their charm. One by one they came out of the misty shadows– snarling, gnarling, glaring at him, walking majestically in a formation towards the doctor. Joe stood still only for seconds, then he began moving backwards away from the wolves, but how he managed to move his legs he just didn't know; for he was fear stricken. The wolves barked at h
