"Twenty-six hours."

Orion said it to the whole pack common room, and nobody argued with the number. Forty students sat or stood in their academy jackets, some still holding half-finished homework, all of them staring at the courier's folded paper where Caden had set it on the low table.

"He said sunset tomorrow," a first-year whispered from the window seat. "Sunset tomorrow, for what? What happens at sunset?"

"He gets his answer," Caden said.

"And if she doesn't give one?"

"She'll give one." Se

"Twenty-six hours."Orion said it to the whole pack common room, and nobody argued with the number. Forty students sat or stood in their academy jackets, some still holding half-finished homework, all of them staring at the courier's folded paper where Caden had set it on the low table."He said sunset tomorrow," a first-year whispered from the window seat. "Sunset tomorrow, for what? What happens at sunset?""He gets his answer," Caden said."And if she doesn't give one?""She'll give one." Seraphina kept her voice steady. She stood by the cold hearth with her tie loosened and her satchel still on the floor where she'd dropped it. "Sit down, Pell. You're making the others nervous.""I'm nervous because it's real now." A girl near the door twisted her sleeve. "My mother wrote to me this morning. She said families are pulling their kids out. Thornwood's already closed its gates to anyone from Blackwood.""Is that true?" someone asked."Vesper Thorne is still in the guest wing," Isadora

"Put your hands down."Seraphina hadn't known she would say it until it was already in the air. She had crossed the stone floor in six steps, satchel bumping her hip, and stopped in the open center of the half circle, where only an Alpha was supposed to stand.Eight hands had gone up. They hung there, uncertain."Miss Voss." Corvin didn't turn his head. "You have no seat in this chamber and no voice in this vote.""No. I have a name, and you've been spending it for twenty minutes."A rustle went through the elders. Beside the founding chair, Caden said her name very quietly. She didn't look at him.*You're shaking,* her wolf said.*I know.**Good. It means you're awake.*"You're voting on him because of me," Seraphina said. "So hear me before you decide.""The council does not take instruction from a student," said the gray-bearded elder."Then take information." She faced the whole arc. "The true code is sitting in the archive, on vellum Thornwood authenticated with a seal nobody can

"Forgery."Corvin Ashveil said it before Marcus had finished laying the ledger on the stone table. He did not raise his voice. He had never needed to. He sat at the right hand of the empty founding chair, white-haired and straight-backed, and looked at the book like it was something the cat had dragged in."Read the entry," Marcus said. "Aloud, for the council.""I will not give a dead man's account books the dignity of my voice.""Then I will."Marcus read it. Seraphina stood against the back wall in her academy uniform, satchel still on her shoulder because she had come straight from the corridor outside Wren's classroom, where a dozen students had pretended not to watch her pass. The council chamber was warmer than she remembered. Twenty elders sat in a half circle, and the murmur that rose when Marcus reached the line about the boy Elias being dealt with before spring was the sound of a room deciding which side of a wall to stand on."This proves nothing," said an elder with a hea

"Say that again."Caden had come off the wall without seeming to move. He stood across the table from his father, and his voice was very quiet."I said he may have known.""Don't give me *may*." Caden's hands curled at his sides. "You just told us he recited the altered clause from memory. You told us he sat you down the week Elias vanished. That isn't *may*. That's a man who was ready.""I don't have proof.""Then we find proof," Seraphina said. Both of them turned. She hadn't planned to speak, but the words were already out, and the room had gone quiet enough to hear them."Your father kept records," she said to Marcus. "Men like that always do."Marcus was silent a long moment. Then he said, "A ledger."Dene's head came up from the vellum. Rowan went still by the door."He kept it in a locked case in his study," Marcus said. "I saw it once. He caught me looking and told me it was household a

"Read it again." Marcus Ashveil didn't raise his voice. He stood over the vellum in Dene's reading room with both hands flat on the table, and in the grey light from the high window he looked older than he had at the council. Dene read the line a second time, slow and clear. *"No claim upon the Lunar line may be made, witnessed, or confirmed by any house that has shed Lunar blood. Nor by any house that kept silence afterward, and profited by it."* The room stayed quiet. Seraphina stood across from him in her academy uniform, tie finally straight, her seminar notes tucked under one arm. Caden was against the far wall. Rowan sat by the door with his boots still muddy and his eyes never leaving the vellum. "Draven's Hollow hunted," Marcus said. "That is the first sentence." "Yes," Dene said. "And the second." Dene didn't answer. She didn't have to. "That's Ashveil," C

"It's been sitting in a bookbinder's cellar for seventeen years."Rowan set a waxed canvas tube on the table and didn't let go of it. Mud streaked his boots to the ankle. He hadn't slept, and he'd ridden through the night to be back before first bell.Dene's reading room off the main archive was small enough that six people made it crowded. Vesper had pressed a green wax seal over the lock and called it a Thornwood ward. Seraphina stood in her academy uniform, tie crooked again, because she meant to go straight from here to Wren's seminar and be seen doing it. Isadora stood beside her in her own uniform, hair pinned, an arm's length from the table."Seventeen years," Seraphina said. "Where.""Harrow's Ford. A man named Teague Marlowe binds ledgers for the river merchants. He's one of mine." Rowan finally let go of the tube. "Your father walked into his shop the week before he vanished. Paid him to seal something in the bottom of a book press. Told him it was for me or for his daughter
