The silence stretched until it became unbearable.

It was a thick silence. The kind that filled your ears until you could hear the blood moving in your veins. The kind that made every small sound feel like a shout.

Every eye in the temple remained fixed on Lyra.

There were hundreds of them. Alphas in their ceremonial robes. Nobles with jewels at their throats. Priests with silver staffs. Young wolves who had come for blessings. All of them staring.

She could feel their stares like invisible hands pressing against her skin. On her face. On her shoulders. On the faded gray cloak that suddenly felt too thin.

Her pulse was in her throat.

"The birthmark," the old elder repeated, his trembling voice barely above a whisper. "Please... show us your neck."

The words cut through the quiet.

Lyra instinctively reached up, her fingers brushing the back of her neck. The hair there was cool. She didn’t know what they were talking about. She’d never thought about the back of her neck before.

"My neck?" she asked, confusion clouding her voice. It came out smaller than she meant it to. "I... I've always had a mark there."

A collective gasp swept through the temple.

It moved like a wave. From the front row of priests to the back where the young wolves stood. Gasp. Inhale. Sharp and sudden.

Lyra flinched. What had she said wrong?

Near the front, seated in the carved chair with the Blackthorn crest, Lady Selene's nails dug into the carved armrests of her chair her breath became measured. no one would have noticed except kael

The wood creaked under the pressure.

The High Priest stepped closer, his expression calm despite the tension in the room. His white robes moved without sound. The crystal on his staff caught the light from the ceiling and threw it across the floor.

"Child," he said gently. His voice was low, meant only for her, but the temple was so quiet everyone heard. "May I examine it?"

Lyra hesitated.

Every instinct told her to run.

Run out of the temple. Run back to Grey Hollow. Run to the small room with the cot and the window that let in cold air.

She didn't know these people.

She didn't know why they were here.

She didn't understand why they looked at her as though she'd risen from the grave.

The elder was crying. The nobles were whispering. The Alpha of Blackthorn was staring at her like she was a riddle.

But something in the old priest's eyes made her nod.

It wasn’t pity. It wasn’t fear. It was something older. Sadness, maybe. Like he had been waiting for this moment for a very long time.

Slowly...

She untied the faded ribbon holding her hair.

The ribbon was gray. Same as the cloak. Worn soft from years of use. She pulled it free and her dark strands slipped over her shoulders. They fell past her collarbone, past her shoulder blades.

She gathered them to one side with both hands. Her arms shook. She lifted the hair up, exposing the back of her neck to the cold air of the temple.

The temple held its breath.

No one moved.

No one blinked.

For a second there was nothing. Just the sound of Lyra’s breathing.

Then moonlight from the crystal ceiling touched it.

The mark awakened.

At first glance, it looked like a simple crescent moon. Pale silver. Small. The kind of thing Sister Mara had called a "moon-kiss" and said was good luck.

Then the light hit it.

Silver lines spread from the crescent like delicate vines. They moved outward, slow and then fast, across her skin. Weaving. Curling. Connecting.

The lines formed a circle. Then thorns. Then in the center, the shape of a wolf. Its head was lifted to the moon. Its body was surrounded by thorned branches that curved in and out.

The symbol shimmered. Once. Bright enough that Lyra could see it reflected in the marble floor in front of her.

Then it settled back into her skin. Faint. But still there. Still glowing.

The High Priest staggered backward.

His staff slipped from his fingers.

It struck the marble floor with a loud crack. The sound echoed off every wall.

"The Royal Moon Crest..."

His voice shook. It broke on the last word.

"It still exists."

The old elder covered his mouth as tears streamed freely down his face. He was shaking so hard his whole body moved.

"The Goddess has returned her..."

For several heartbeats...

No one spoke.

Lyra could hear her own heart. She could hear the elder crying. She could hear the faint ringing that seemed to be coming from the mark itself.

Then the temple exploded.

"Impossible!"

"That's the Royal Crest!"

"It vanished nineteen years ago!"

"Who is she?"

"She can't be—"

"This is treason!"

Voices layered over each other. Shouting. Accusations. Disbelief.

Lyra stood frozen with her hair still in one hand. The cold air on her neck felt like ice.

"Silence!"

Kael's voice cut through the chaos like steel.

It wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be.

The room fell quiet immediately. As if someone had cut a string and all the voices dropped.

His eyes never left the mark on Lyra's neck.

Even from where he stood, he could see it clearly. The crescent. The thorns. The wolf.

kael knew that crest, he had seen it before

A crest no wolf had worn in nearly two decades.

His mind searched for another explanation.

A trick. A forgery. A mistake in the moonlight.

There wasn't one.

The bond in his chest pulsed. Hard. It matched the faint glow of the mark on her neck.

Lyra lowered her hair slowly. Her hands were trembling. She let the strands fall back down and tied the ribbon again with clumsy fingers.

She looked from face to face. At the crying elder. At the High Priest who still hadn’t picked up his staff. At Lady Selene whose face was completely white. At Kael whose expression hadn’t changed.

"I don't understand," she whispered. Her voice cracked. "Will someone please tell me what that mark means?"

The whispers started again. Softer this time.

The High Priest looked at her. Really looked at her. At the worn cloak. At the calluses on her hands. At the confusion in her eyes.

He looked at her with pity.

"It means your life is about to change forever."

The words settled over her like a stone.

Before he could say another word—

The great doors of the temple burst open.

The sound was like thunder. Wood against stone. It echoed and echoed.

A young warrior stumbled inside.

His white ceremonial armor was stained with blood. Red across the chest. Red down one arm. He was breathing hard. Each breath was a rattle.

He dropped to one knee before the High Priest. His head was bowed.

"Forgive the interruption..."

He struggled to breathe. His chest heaved. "We caught an assassin."

The temple froze.

All the noise stopped. All the whispers died. Even the elder stopped crying.

The warrior lifted something wrapped in black cloth. His hands were shaking. Blood smeared the fabric.

When he pulled it open...

A silver dagger clattered onto the marble floor.

The sound was sharp. Metal on stone. It skidded for half a second before stopping.

The blade was engraved with a black crescent moon.

The old elder's face drained of color. All the tears stopped.

"No..."

The High Priest whispered. The word was barely audible.

"Shadowmoon."

The name moved through the temple like a cold wind.

Shadowmoon. One of the seven Packs. The ones who kept to the far borders. The ones who never came to the temple unless they had to.

The wounded guard swallowed hard. Blood was at the corner of his mouth now. He forced out his final words.

"He wasn't trying to kill an Alpha..."

He paused. Gasped for air.

Slowly...

Every person in the temple turned toward Lyra.

All the eyes. Again.

The guard lifted a shaking hand and pointed directly at her.

"He came for... the girl."

The temple erupted into panic.

It was instant.

"Get her out!"

"Close the doors!"

"Where are the guards?"

Outside, wolves shouted. The sound came through the walls. Orders being barked. Feet running on stone.

Inside, Blackthorn guards drew their weapons. The sound of steel leaving sheaths filled the air.

The massive temple bells began ringing again.

But not the slow, deep toll from before.

Not for a blessing.

This was fast. Urgent. Alarm bells.

_Dong. Dong. Dong._

The sound vibrated through the floor and into Lyra’s bones.

And standing in the middle of the chaos...

In the center of the marble floor with her gray cloak and her untied hair and the silver mark on her neck that wouldn’t stop glowing...

Lyra realized that before today, she had been invisible.

No one in Grey Hollow had known her name. No one had cared where she went or what she did. She mended clothes. She ate what she was given. She existed.

Now...

Someone wanted her dead.

The thought didn’t feel real. It felt too big.

An assassin.

A dagger with a black moon.

Shadowmoon.

Her.

The High Priest moved first. He stepped between Lyra and the doors, his staff lifted though he hadn’t picked it up yet.

Kael moved second. He was already at her side. He didn’t touch her. But his presence was there. Solid. Between her and the rest of the room.

Lady Selene was on her feet. Her chair had scraped back.

"Seal the temple," she ordered. Her voice didn’t shake. "Now."

Guards moved to obey.

Lyra couldn’t move. Her feet were stuck to the marble. The dagger was still on the floor a few feet away. The black crescent seemed to stare up at her.

The bells kept ringing.

_Dong. Dong. Dong._

Someone was screaming outside.

The elder was on his knees now, praying. His hands were clasped so tight his knuckles were white.

The High Priest turned to look at Lyra. Over his shoulder. His eyes were full of something she didn’t understand.

Fear.

And something else.

Recognition.

"It has begun," he whispered. Not to her. To himself.

Kael didn’t look at anyone else. His golden eyes were on the doors. On the shadows moving past the stained glass. On the way the light was changing as clouds moved over the moon.

But his hand was close to hers. Not touching. Just close.

The bond pulsed again. Stronger this time. Not warmth. Warning.

Lyra’s breath was coming too fast. She pressed a hand to her chest like she could hold her heart in.

Before today, she was no one.

Now the Royal Moon Crest was on her neck.

Now an Alpha was calling her impossible.

Now an assassin had come for her with a Shadowmoon blade.

The bells didn’t stop.

And somewhere beyond the temple walls, whoever had sent that dagger she had no idea but was probably already planning how to send another one.

The silence inside the Moon Temple became unbearable. It wasn’t just quiet. It was the kind of quiet that pressed down on your chest until breathing felt like work. The kind that made the sound of your own heartbeat too loud. The moonlight from the crystal ceiling poured down in silver sheets and caught on the marble floor, on the priests’ white robes, on the silver trim of the Alphas’ cloaks. But no one moved to break it.No one moved. No one dared speak. Even the priests stood frozen. Their silver staffs were gripped tight. Their mouths were open slightly, like they had started to speak and then thought better of it. All of them were staring at the same place. At the center of the floor.
