Kael stared at the mark on his hand. It was small. Just a silver crescent surrounded by strange lines. But the moment he touched it, a sharp pulse went through his hand. He pulled back. "What the hell is this?" Selene looked terrified. "The seventh seal." "You already said that." "I know." "Then explain it." She took a breath. "The seven seals were created to protect the Moon Kingdom." Kael looked at the mark. "So why is one on me?" Selene shook her head. "It shouldn't be." Jer stepped closer. "That's becoming the most common sentence in our lives." Rowan ignored him. "Can the mark be removed?" Selene hesitated. "Maybe." "Maybe?" "I've never seen the seal choose a person before." Kael's expression hardened. "Then find someone who knows how." Selene looked at him. "There is someone." "Who?" "My old commander." "Where is he?" "Near the northern border." Jer sighed. The entire hall went dark. Kael immediately reached for his sword. "Everyone stay together." Jer moved closer to Rowan. "I hate when people say that." "Why?" "Because something terrible usually happens right after." A loud sound came from the other end of the hall. Then another. Someone was walking toward them. Slowly. Kael raised his sword. "Who's there?" No answer. Selene reached for an arrow. "Show yourself." A figure stepped out of the darkness. Kael's eyes narrowed. It was one of the Blackthorn guards. He was holding a torch. "Alpha." Kael lowered his sword slightly. "What happened?" The guard looked confused. "The lights went out." "We know." "I came to check on you." Kael studied him. "Where were you when the doors closed?" The guard hesitated. "In the west corridor." Jer frowned. "How convenient." The guard looked at him. "What?" "Nothing." Kael walked closer. "How many guards are still inside the keep?" "Twenty-three." "Where are they?"

The blue crystal cracked in Lyra's hand. She stared at it. "No..." Eamon rushed toward her. "Lyra, drop it!" She opened her fingers. The crystal fell into the snow. Crack. Another piece broke away. Then the entire crystal suddenly went dark. Lyra's heart sank. "What happened?" Eamon crouched beside it. "I don't know." "Can it be fixed?" "I've never seen anything like this." The whistle echoed through the chamber. Everyone froze. Then Jer looked at the scout. "You really had to do that?" The scout smiled. "Now they know exactly where the princess is." Kael stepped forward. "You're not getting her." The scout raised his sword. "There's nowhere for you to run." Kael glanced toward the staircase. Then back at the three scouts. "Maybe." Jer understood immediately. "Oh, I know that look." Rowan tightened his grip on his sword. "Which look?" "The one that means we're about to do something stupid." Kael smiled. "Run." They all moved at once. The scouts charged after them. Kael stayed behind for a few seconds, blocking the doorway while everyone else hurried up the stairs. "Go!" he shouted. Rowan looked back.
