The entire hall went dark.

Kael immediately reached for his sword.

"Everyone stay together."

Jer moved closer to Rowan.

"I hate when people say that."

"Why?"

"Because something terrible usually happens right after."

A loud sound came from the other end of the hall.

Then another.

Someone was walking toward them.

Slowly.

Kael raised his sword.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

Selene reached for an arrow.

"Show yourself."

A figure stepped out of the darkness.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

  • The Alpha's Dead Mate   The seventh seal

Kael stared at the mark on his hand. It was small. Just a silver crescent surrounded by strange lines. But the moment he touched it, a sharp pulse went through his hand. He pulled back. "What the hell is this?" Selene looked terrified. "The seventh seal." "You already said that." "I know." "Then explain it." She took a breath. "The seven seals were created to protect the Moon Kingdom." Kael looked at the mark. "So why is one on me?" Selene shook her head. "It shouldn't be." Jer stepped closer. "That's becoming the most common sentence in our lives." Rowan ignored him. "Can the mark be removed?" Selene hesitated. "Maybe." "Maybe?" "I've never seen the seal choose a person before." Kael's expression hardened. "Then find someone who knows how." Selene looked at him. "There is someone." "Who?" "My old commander." "Where is he?" "Near the northern border." Jer sighed. "Of course he is." A sudden knock came from the other side of the door. Everyone froze

"Who's there?" No answer. Selene reached for an arrow. "Show yourself." A figure stepped out of the darkness. Kael's eyes narrowed. It was one of the Blackthorn guards. He was holding a torch. "Alpha." Kael lowered his sword slightly. "What happened?" The guard looked confused. "The lights went out." "We know." "I came to check on you." Kael studied him. "Where were you when the doors closed?" The guard hesitated. "In the west corridor." Jer frowned. "How convenient." The guard looked at him. "What?" "Nothing." Kael walked closer. "How many guards are still inside the keep?" "Twenty-three." "Where are they?"

  • The Alpha's Dead Mate   The message

The blue crystal cracked in Lyra's hand. She stared at it. "No..." Eamon rushed toward her. "Lyra, drop it!" She opened her fingers. The crystal fell into the snow. Crack. Another piece broke away. Then the entire crystal suddenly went dark. Lyra's heart sank. "What happened?" Eamon crouched beside it. "I don't know." "Can it be fixed?" "I've never seen anything like this." Lyra looked toward the forest. That strange feeling was still there. Only now... It was stronger. Something was pulling her toward Blackthorn. She stood. "I'm going." Eamon immediately shook his head. "No." "Kael is there." "We don't know that." "I can feel him." "Lyra—" "I know." She looked at him. "But I can't just sit here." Eamon sighed. "You really are determined to make my job difficult." Lyra smiled slightly. "Sorry." "You should be." At Blackthorn Keep... Kael stood beneath the glowing symbol. Nobody spoke. The entire pack seemed frozen. The wounded guard was being

  • The Alpha's Dead Mate   The last seal

Kael stared at the silver light in the distance. "What exactly am I looking at?" Selene didn't answer immediately. She was staring at the sky like she'd just seen something she never wanted to see again. "The last seal." Kael looked at her. "You said that already." "I know." "Then explain it." Selene took a breath. "The Seven Packs were never just separate territories." "They were connected to the Moon Kingdom." Rowan frowned. "Connected how?" "Each Pack protected a seal." Kael's expression hardened. "And if all seven seals are opened?" Selene looked toward the silver light. "The protection around the Moon Kingdom disappears." Jer scratched his head. "So the Moon Queen is trying to bring the kingdom back?" "No." Selene shook her head. "She's trying to control what was left behind." Kael didn't like the sound of that. "What was left behind?" Selene looked at him. "The Moon Crown." Silence. Jer blinked. "Wait." "There's act

  • The Alpha's Dead Mate   The warning

Kael stared at Selene. "She's going to Blackthorn?" Selene nodded. "Yes." "Why?" "Because she knows you're not there." Kael's jaw tightened. "What does she want?" Selene looked at him for a moment. "You." Jer frowned. "Why would the Moon Queen care about Kael?" Selene looked toward the dark forest. "Because you're the Alpha protecting the princess." "And as long as you're alive..." "...Lyra is harder to reach." Kael didn't like the sound of that. "What is she planning?" Selene shook her head. "I don't know everything." "But I know she has already sent people ahead." "How many?" "Enough." Jer sighed. "That's not a number." "Exactly." Rowan looked at Kael. "We need to get back to Blackthorn." Kael nodded. "Now." Selene stepped in front of him. "Wait." Kael stopped. "You can't go yet." "Why?" "Because the main road is being watched." She pointed toward the valley. "There are Eclipse scouts everywhere." "If you go that way, they'll find you." Jer fo

  • The Alpha's Dead Mate   The hidden way

The whistle echoed through the chamber. Everyone froze. Then Jer looked at the scout. "You really had to do that?" The scout smiled. "Now they know exactly where the princess is." Kael stepped forward. "You're not getting her." The scout raised his sword. "There's nowhere for you to run." Kael glanced toward the staircase. Then back at the three scouts. "Maybe." Jer understood immediately. "Oh, I know that look." Rowan tightened his grip on his sword. "Which look?" "The one that means we're about to do something stupid." Kael smiled. "Run." They all moved at once. The scouts charged after them. Kael stayed behind for a few seconds, blocking the doorway while everyone else hurried up the stairs. "Go!" he shouted. Rowan looked back. "Kael!" "I'll catch up!" Jer grabbed Rowan's arm. "Come on!" They raced up the narrow staircase. Mira followed closely behind Finn's grandmother. Tobias was the last one up. He kept looking ove
