My calloused hands still ached and bled as I hauled the buckets up the stone stairs. The clank of chains echoed with every step; my lungs burned, my throat parched from lack of water. Even the murky liquid in the bucket looked tempting.
I was shoved forward. Water splashed across the floor. I tried to stand, but my face was slammed against the ground.
“Stupid she-wolf. Look at the mess you made.” I growled in protest, but days without food had left me weak; I could barely stay upright. “Clean it up and fetch more. The alpha wants the fortress spotless for tonight’s celebration.”
I was done with the humiliation, done with this slave’s life.
The wolf who’d tripped me walked away laughing, joining his comrades. Low-caste soldiers, yet still above me.
I stared at my reflection in the spilled water: red scars across my face and neck, bruises on my gaunt, fragile body. My once-silver hair was filthy and matted; my eyes held no light.
“I did nothing to deserve this,” I snarled, fists clenched. “My clan did nothing to be destroyed by that bastard.”
Inside me, Shade—my wolf—growled in fury and despair. The silver chains suppressed her, trapping me in human form so I could be controlled.
“Be patient. Our chance will come,” I whispered, struggling to stand on shaking legs.
I staggered through the fortress corridors—an ancient stone stronghold hidden among the trees. The scent of earth and moss mixed with the fear and blood of slaves. Pathetic creatures who’d given up fighting. But I wasn’t like them. I would never stop fighting for my freedom.
Something slammed into my arm, knocking me to the side. The bucket crashed down. My legs tangled in the chains; I fell hard, knees cracking against stone.
“Filthy slave! How dare you touch the Luna!”
I never saw who spoke. A whip cracked across my back, shredding my rags and skin.
I screamed as another lash fell, flesh tearing, hot blood running down my body. I clenched my teeth against the agony radiating everywhere.
“Enough.” A deep voice froze my blood. Shade cowered inside me as I fought to keep my eyes on the floor. “Every wolf in this pack matters—even the slaves.” Long claws gripped my face, forcing my gaze up. “Ah… I remember bringing this one in. The silver she-wolf.”
My skin crawled. Instinct screamed to pull away, but he squeezed harder, claws piercing my flesh. His brown eyes raked over me, lingering on my mutilated body. He licked his lips and smiled, then released me brutally. I lifted my chin, meeting his stare until a fist smashed into my cheek, slamming me back to the ground.
“Filthy wolf! How dare you look at the alpha!”
“That’s exactly why I kept her,” the alpha laughed. “Strong. Proud.” He grabbed my hair, yanking me upright as I thrashed. His nose trailed along my neck as he inhaled. “A wild beauty lost in this filth.”
I growled, Shade raging with me against the alpha who caged us. “I’d rather lick this fortress clean than submit to a weak alpha like you.” My voice was frail, but clear enough for everyone to hear.
Pain exploded with the next blow. Air fled my lungs; every muscle spasmed. Acid rose in my throat; I vomited helplessly.
The alpha released me. My legs buckled; I doubled over, clutching my stomach. A low whimper escaped as his massive shadow loomed.
“Take this ungrateful wolf to the cells. Give her just enough to keep her alive.”
As the alpha strode away with his sycophants, I lay in the filth, writhing in agony and humiliation.
“Come on, wolf.” A soldier yanked me up by the arm.
The cells were outside the fortress—punishment for disobedient slaves who still clung to hope. Exposed to the elements, even the strongest wolves broke, begging forgiveness.
As they dragged me away, I overheard the soldiers behind me. They didn’t bother lowering their voices around a mere slave.
“I don’t blame the alpha for wanting that one,” one sneered, lust dripping from his words.
“Want your eyes ripped out? Watch your mouth,” the other warned, but I felt their stares crawling over me like slime.
“Don’t worry. After the full moon, the alpha will discard her.” My blood ran cold; I listened harder. “I heard from a castle wolf: he’s wanted her since he conquered her clan. That’s why he didn’t kill her. But on the next full moon, he’ll claim her.” My body locked. “Think he’ll keep a slave as his concubine? Nah, she’ll be tied up for the unmated soldiers to enjoy.”
Their laughter echoed through the trees like a dark omen of my fate. I lifted my eyes to the moon above us.
I had little time left to escape… or my destiny would be sealed forever.
It was crystal clear to me. This alpha had lost his mind.I slapped my forehead, thinking how I’d let this wolf lure me into a crazy plan with no guarantees.Dean was clearly a young alpha—impressive, considering most alphas conquered their packs after fifty. The alpha before me was much younger, maybe thirty-five or thirty-six. He had youth and strength on his side, but lacked the power and battle experience of a seasoned alpha.“Do you understand what you’re saying?” I asked, stepping closer to the sofa, where Dean watched me calmly. “I’m a fugitive wolf, a slave who lives in the human world. There’s no way I could be more unworthy of being an alpha’s Luna.”“But the goddess bound you to an alpha.” My blood ran cold. The memory of the night Viktor rejected me still burned in my mind like fuel, feeding my thirst for revenge.Dean stood, coming close enough for his scent to envelop me, stirring both my wolf and me. He slipped his hands into his pockets and smiled. I turned my face awa
With everything settled, Mateo thought it would be faster and safer to drive to Portland in a rental car. We packed a few things for the trip, Mateo locked the bar, and we hit the road.First, we took a taxi to Tacoma, where we rented the car for the journey. The rainy weather seemed to heighten the surrounding scents, especially the animals’. My senses were on high alert, attuned to any sound, smell, or movement near us during the drive.“So…” Mateo said, settling into the driver’s seat while I sat beside him. “This person you’re meeting—is it someone I’ve seen before?”“I don’t know, but he was at the bar last night.” My voice came out flat as I struggled with the seatbelt. “How do I fasten this thing?”With deft hands, Mateo grabbed the metal end and clipped it in quickly. I looked at it curiously, learning how the system worked.“Is it that guy in the leather jacket and boots?” Mateo’s voice was a whisper, low and grave. His eyes fixed downward, carried a sadness I didn’t understa
That was simply too good to be true. Dean was offering me exactly what I wanted most: the chance to destroy Viktor Alistair and his entire pack. I narrowed my eyes, trying to focus on his face while judging whether I should trust this alpha or not.“You’re just going to give me this opportunity for free?” I asked, carefully watching Dean’s reactions. The alpha gave a sideways smile, rising from the bed and walking toward me. He showed no aggression, but my body instinctively reacted to his presence and power. I lowered my eyes to his chest, but Dean lifted my face again, his fingers firmly holding my chin.“I’m not going to do all this work and walk away empty-handed, of course. I have something in mind that you can give me.” I raised an eyebrow, my gaze flicking to the bloodstained sheets.“I think I already gave you something only I could give.” Dean smiled, pressing his body closer to mine. Immediately, I felt something poking my stomach and froze. “Don’t even think about it.”Dean
I couldn’t hold it in and burst out laughing, clutching my stomach. I’d really let my guard down, relaxed because I felt safe in the human world. That alpha standing before me was proof. I hadn’t sensed him approaching, hadn’t caught his scent or power until it was too late.“So, what does the alpha want from this stray wolf?” I asked, composing myself.Alpha Dean didn’t react the way I expected. He gave a half-smile, hands in his pockets in a relaxed posture, as if I hadn’t insulted him. A strange feeling bloomed in my chest. I was curious about him and his intentions for approaching me and revealing his identity so easily.“You know who I am, so you also know why I’m here, living among humans.” Dean shrugged, as if it weren’t important. I pulled the sachet from my pocket—the strong herb smell confused my senses—and tossed it away.“Are you sure about that? Viktor’s still after you.” I clenched my fists, frustrated at my own naivety in thinking something like that would keep me safe
The human who saved me that cursed night tended my wounds, gave me shelter, food, and clean clothes. I expected him to try something, but he always kept his distance and was kind. He asked no questions—not even when he removed the heavy chains from my wrists.“You can stay as long as you need.” He rubbed his neck; his scent shifted slightly, as if with discomfort. “My name is Mateo. Mateo Keller.” I said nothing, huddled in a corner, watching the strange human come and go.The first night, a pack of wolves prowled the building, but soon left. In the following nights, smaller groups came until they lost interest and stopped appearing. One full-moon night, Shade grew restless, desperate to run free in the forest again.“Want to get caught? Do you have any idea what they’d do to us? We stay here for now.” I peeked through the door crack: Mateo laughing with humans drinking strong-smelling liquor. “I think we can trust him… at least somewhat.”As every night, Mateo arrived after closing t
As I was dragged out of the hall, I heard Viktor’s daughter laughing and whispering to her followers that I wouldn’t last an hour. The alpha’s personal guard would hunt me down and find me in the blink of an eye.Being so underestimated pissed me off. Even weak and battered, I was still agile and had enough stamina to escape. I’d spent my life as bait for that bastard alpha’s wolves, training their skills. At night, I hid from them—for very different reasons. The chains were heavy, dragging my arms down. The castle grew distant; forest darkness swallowed us like a bad omen. Celebration shouts and lights from the castle still pierced the treetops. I growled, furious and frustrated—my odds of keeping my promise were slim. The soldiers stopped, glancing around suspiciously. When one turned to me, eyes crawling over my body, I knew what was coming. I’d seen that disgusting look too many times. He grabbed my shoulders and slammed me to the ground.“Be a good girl and stay quiet. We can’t t
