Chapter 2: The Shadow of the Trees

The full moon mocked me from above my cell, laughing at my failed escape attempts over the past days. Suddenly, ice-cold water slammed into my back and head, shocking me awake.

“Wake up and smile, wolf. Looks like the goddess is giving you one more chance,” the soldier sneered, dumping another bucket over me. My nose burned from the foul stench rising from the liquid.

“What the hell did you throw on me?” I demanded. The wolf bared his teeth and kicked the bars, growling.

“That’s far more than a slave like you deserves.” He turned and left, making way for two she-wolves—clearly slaves themselves. “Clean her up. No tricks.” They trembled at the threat, but I stayed still.

This was the perfect chance to run, but when the she-wolves approached—tiny, broken things—I couldn’t do it. If I fought now, they’d die for it. I let them wash me, dress me in clean rags, brush and braid my hair while they poured more of that stinking water over my skin.

“Look at that. Now I understand why the alpha kept you alive,” the soldier leered, yanking my chains. “Let’s see how long that fire lasts.”

We walked corridors and doors I’d never seen inside the fortress. Soon, we stood before massive dark-wood doors carved with a howling wolf beneath a full moon.

Panic seized me. I thrashed, chains rattling, feet sliding on polished stone. My heart pounded; my lungs burned as if no air reached them. The soldier yanked harder, but I fought.

The doors swung open—and I froze.

Wearing only a robe, the alpha appeared, holding a golden goblet in one hand and a thin rope in the other. He looked nothing like the powerful alpha he pretended to be; only alliances kept him in power—a figurehead.

“Now you’re worth looking at, silver wolf. Reminds me of the day I slaughtered your entire clan.” I snarled, baring teeth. Rage boiled from Shade, trapped by those cursed chains.

I was thrown inside, face slamming into the floor. As I tried to rise, the weight crushed my leg. I turned—the door was closing, my last hope trapped outside.

“Now let me taste that wild beauty,” the alpha purred, reaching for me.

When his fingers nearly touched me, I jerked my leg, unbalancing him, then lunged—sinking my teeth into his hand and tearing off two fingers.

“Fucking bitch!” he roared. His fist smashed into my face, hurling me across the room into the wall. Air exploded from my lungs; vision blurred.

When it cleared, he was wrapping his bleeding hand in a sheet.

“You whore! I swear you won’t leave this room alive. When I’m done with your body, I’ll enjoy torturing you. The goddess alone will hear your screams.”

“My alpha!” someone shouted, bursting through the door.

“Get out!” he bellowed—but it was too late.

I sprang, shoving the intruder aside and bolting down the corridors. I retraced my path, bursting into the forest. But I wasn’t safe yet.

My legs burned, muscles screaming. My wounded feet bled on rocks and thorns, but I couldn’t stop. Cold air seared my throat; my lungs pushed beyond their limit.

“Don’t stop,” I gasped. “We can’t stop yet.” Shade roared inside me, frantic.

My foot caught on a root; I crashed forward, arms outstretched. I tried to stand, but my trembling body had nothing left. Icy wind sliced my skin; the star-filled sky above the trees seemed to invite me to rest.

Until howls rose—not far away.

I forced myself to my knees, head tilted back, eyes burning with unshed tears.

“Goddess, give me strength,” I begged the void.

I staggered upright, but years of slavery had left me too weak. “Shade, help me,” I whispered. My wolf clawed inside, desperate to break free, but the silver chains still held her back. “It’s okay. We’ll make it.”

I ran again, branches and bushes tearing my skin, the wind growing colder, carrying the scent of wolves. I looked around—I was surrounded.

One by one, they emerged from the trees. Powerful warriors led by a wolf with piercing eyes. These weren’t the tyrant’s men.

The largest stepped forward, shifting from wolf to man. Brown eyes gleamed in the dark, studying me.

No way I could fight him. He’d kill me in seconds. My only choice was to run—but the moment I turned, he was on me. His hand clamped my throat, slamming me onto the damp forest floor. My claws raked his skin, but he didn’t even flinch, only stared down like I was helpless prey.

“Thought you could escape, filthy wolf,” he spat in my face. Then he hauled me up and threw me to the others—now all in human form. “Take her.”

They dragged me brutally through the night. No one spoke. Soon, we reached a camp; I was tossed forward near a fire.

“What do we have here?” A deep, power-laden voice rang out. My body locked; the weight of that presence forced my head down.

“A slave. We found her running through the forest, Supreme.”

Shade whimpered inside me as I fought to keep my eyes on the ground. My hair was yanked; my face forced up. Ice-blue eyes studied me coldly.

“Interesting. Let’s see if she’s worthy of living in my court.”

It was crystal clear to me. This alpha had lost his mind.I slapped my forehead, thinking how I’d let this wolf lure me into a crazy plan with no guarantees.Dean was clearly a young alpha—impressive, considering most alphas conquered their packs after fifty. The alpha before me was much younger, maybe thirty-five or thirty-six. He had youth and strength on his side, but lacked the power and battle experience of a seasoned alpha.“Do you understand what you’re saying?” I asked, stepping closer to the sofa, where Dean watched me calmly. “I’m a fugitive wolf, a slave who lives in the human world. There’s no way I could be more unworthy of being an alpha’s Luna.”“But the goddess bound you to an alpha.” My blood ran cold. The memory of the night Viktor rejected me still burned in my mind like fuel, feeding my thirst for revenge.Dean stood, coming close enough for his scent to envelop me, stirring both my wolf and me. He slipped his hands into his pockets and smiled. I turned my face awa

With everything settled, Mateo thought it would be faster and safer to drive to Portland in a rental car. We packed a few things for the trip, Mateo locked the bar, and we hit the road.First, we took a taxi to Tacoma, where we rented the car for the journey. The rainy weather seemed to heighten the surrounding scents, especially the animals’. My senses were on high alert, attuned to any sound, smell, or movement near us during the drive.“So…” Mateo said, settling into the driver’s seat while I sat beside him. “This person you’re meeting—is it someone I’ve seen before?”“I don’t know, but he was at the bar last night.” My voice came out flat as I struggled with the seatbelt. “How do I fasten this thing?”With deft hands, Mateo grabbed the metal end and clipped it in quickly. I looked at it curiously, learning how the system worked.“Is it that guy in the leather jacket and boots?” Mateo’s voice was a whisper, low and grave. His eyes fixed downward, carried a sadness I didn’t understa

That was simply too good to be true. Dean was offering me exactly what I wanted most: the chance to destroy Viktor Alistair and his entire pack. I narrowed my eyes, trying to focus on his face while judging whether I should trust this alpha or not.“You’re just going to give me this opportunity for free?” I asked, carefully watching Dean’s reactions. The alpha gave a sideways smile, rising from the bed and walking toward me. He showed no aggression, but my body instinctively reacted to his presence and power. I lowered my eyes to his chest, but Dean lifted my face again, his fingers firmly holding my chin.“I’m not going to do all this work and walk away empty-handed, of course. I have something in mind that you can give me.” I raised an eyebrow, my gaze flicking to the bloodstained sheets.“I think I already gave you something only I could give.” Dean smiled, pressing his body closer to mine. Immediately, I felt something poking my stomach and froze. “Don’t even think about it.”Dean

I couldn’t hold it in and burst out laughing, clutching my stomach. I’d really let my guard down, relaxed because I felt safe in the human world. That alpha standing before me was proof. I hadn’t sensed him approaching, hadn’t caught his scent or power until it was too late.“So, what does the alpha want from this stray wolf?” I asked, composing myself.Alpha Dean didn’t react the way I expected. He gave a half-smile, hands in his pockets in a relaxed posture, as if I hadn’t insulted him. A strange feeling bloomed in my chest. I was curious about him and his intentions for approaching me and revealing his identity so easily.“You know who I am, so you also know why I’m here, living among humans.” Dean shrugged, as if it weren’t important. I pulled the sachet from my pocket—the strong herb smell confused my senses—and tossed it away.“Are you sure about that? Viktor’s still after you.” I clenched my fists, frustrated at my own naivety in thinking something like that would keep me safe

The human who saved me that cursed night tended my wounds, gave me shelter, food, and clean clothes. I expected him to try something, but he always kept his distance and was kind. He asked no questions—not even when he removed the heavy chains from my wrists.“You can stay as long as you need.” He rubbed his neck; his scent shifted slightly, as if with discomfort. “My name is Mateo. Mateo Keller.” I said nothing, huddled in a corner, watching the strange human come and go.The first night, a pack of wolves prowled the building, but soon left. In the following nights, smaller groups came until they lost interest and stopped appearing. One full-moon night, Shade grew restless, desperate to run free in the forest again.“Want to get caught? Do you have any idea what they’d do to us? We stay here for now.” I peeked through the door crack: Mateo laughing with humans drinking strong-smelling liquor. “I think we can trust him… at least somewhat.”As every night, Mateo arrived after closing t

  • The bastard Alpha's Mate   Chapter 5: A Run for Life

As I was dragged out of the hall, I heard Viktor’s daughter laughing and whispering to her followers that I wouldn’t last an hour. The alpha’s personal guard would hunt me down and find me in the blink of an eye.Being so underestimated pissed me off. Even weak and battered, I was still agile and had enough stamina to escape. I’d spent my life as bait for that bastard alpha’s wolves, training their skills. At night, I hid from them—for very different reasons. The chains were heavy, dragging my arms down. The castle grew distant; forest darkness swallowed us like a bad omen. Celebration shouts and lights from the castle still pierced the treetops. I growled, furious and frustrated—my odds of keeping my promise were slim. The soldiers stopped, glancing around suspiciously. When one turned to me, eyes crawling over my body, I knew what was coming. I’d seen that disgusting look too many times. He grabbed my shoulders and slammed me to the ground.“Be a good girl and stay quiet. We can’t t
