LOGINAs I was dragged out of the hall, I heard Viktor’s daughter laughing and whispering to her followers that I wouldn’t last an hour. The alpha’s personal guard would hunt me down and find me in the blink of an eye.
Being so underestimated pissed me off. Even weak and battered, I was still agile and had enough stamina to escape. I’d spent my life as bait for that bastard alpha’s wolves, training their skills. At night, I hid from them—for very different reasons.
The chains were heavy, dragging my arms down. The castle grew distant; forest darkness swallowed us like a bad omen. Celebration shouts and lights from the castle still pierced the treetops. I growled, furious and frustrated—my odds of keeping my promise were slim.
The soldiers stopped, glancing around suspiciously. When one turned to me, eyes crawling over my body, I knew what was coming. I’d seen that disgusting look too many times. He grabbed my shoulders and slammed me to the ground.
“Be a good girl and stay quiet. We can’t take long.” His foul, panting breath hit my face. I wrinkled my nose and snarled; he slapped me hard. “You whore, you should feel honored I even looked at you.”
“Finish it quick. The hunt signal’s coming soon.”
The wolf on top of me ripped the front of my clothes. I lay still like a corpse. He seized my face, forcing me to look at him.
“Open those pretty eyes wide and watch me take your body…” I jerked my head and sank my teeth into his hand, tearing flesh. Blood gushed as he yanked back.
His screams alerted his partner, who rushed in with a knife, ready to kill me. I released the first wolf, kicked him into the second, and bolted.
“After her!” one shouted as the signal flare lit the night sky.
“Shit,” I snarled, sprinting between trees, leaping rocks. “I need to hide. Somewhere even Viktor can’t reach—like…” I climbed a boulder and spotted city lights not far off. “There!”
I raced down the hill, sniffing as I fought Shade back. Every time she tried to take over, the chains burned my wrists, weakening me.
“Damn it, Shade,” I growled, slipping on a root and tumbling, branches and rocks slicing my skin. “Can’t you see we can’t shift yet?”
I glanced back—my fresh blood trail stark on the damp earth.
“Fuck!” I whimpered.
I was exhausted, wounded, clothes torn, strength draining from the silver. But I couldn’t stop. I couldn’t surrender. The only thing keeping me moving was the need to destroy Viktor with my own hands—but for that, I had to survive this forest.
I scented the human city. But before I could reach freedom, howls closed in. A large group. I grabbed a heavy, sharp rock.
I stood listening. One wolf lunged from my right, jaws aiming for my throat. I dodged, spun, and smashed the rock into his skull. He whimpered, dazed. I leapt on him and struck again and again until his head split, my arms bathed in blood.
“One down,” I whispered as a larger group approached.
I fled, veering off to avoid leading them to the city. If anyone saw me heading there, Viktor would plan my recapture fast.
I was veering away, hyper-aware, when something slammed my left ribs. I rolled in mud, pain exploding as blood poured from my side.
“I think the prize is mine.” Viktor’s Beta emerged—Gideon Preston. Contempt poured from his dark-brown eyes. He stepped on my leg, slowly increasing pressure. “Now you’ll pay for your insolence against the alpha, filthy wolf.”
“Like hell.” I snarled, kicking him in the knee with my free leg. He dodged; I used the moment to yank my trapped leg, unbalancing him.
He recovered fast—Betas don’t earn the rank by chance—but he didn’t expect his own wolves’ greed. Two lunged, trying to claim me, knocking Gideon aside.
One leapt at me. I grabbed his paws, spun, and hurled his massive body into the Beta. Gideon dodged; I bolted back toward the city.
The wounds in my ribs and leg slowed me, but I reached a house on the forest edge. I crawled to the backyard, stole clothes from a line, washed my face and hair as best I could under a faucet.
I wasn’t safe yet. I needed somewhere my scent would be masked. The streets were nearly empty, but one place reeked of strong alcohol—humans stumbling out.
“There. I have to get there,” I whispered, struggling to breathe.
My vision darkened; my legs dragged, swaying side to side, but I refused to fall. I couldn’t collapse—that would be the end.
I reached out with a shaking hand and pushed the door. A tall, broad shadow emerged from the back, striding toward me. Then I couldn’t hold on anymore and blacked out.
Something burned my skin. I had no strength to complain. I opened my eyes slowly. A man looked down, worry etched on his face, sweat on his brow. Night-black hair fell over warm brown eyes.
A human.
Chapter 37: Lie or Truth? We returned to the hall, my hand resting on Dean’s arm, just in time to witness the most dramatic and exaggerated entrance of the night. I sighed, bored and disappointed with what I was seeing. They entered in a line, presumably in order of hierarchy—the elders of the alliance. Looking at them, no one would call them old; after all, werewolves enjoyed a much longer youth. But it was noticeable that they were no longer at the peak of their strength. As they passed among the guests, wolves and she-wolves lowered their heads in respect for those ancient wolves, but Dean did not join them. He kept his head high, simply waiting for the group to approach. Still, I had to play my part of the innocent and fragile Luna, even though I believed none of those old wolves deserved my respect. When they stopped in front of Dean and me, I bowed with impeccable posture. “Greetings, elders,” I said in a low, delicate voice.“Alpha Dean Valerius, explain this.” The elder at the
With every new interaction I had at the party, I tried to identify who had approached me and spoken those strange words. As if I didn’t already know, I was constantly being watched. Viktor’s allies were everywhere at that party, just as there were those whose trust he was still trying to win—but I highly doubted he would succeed.“That spoiled pup ruined any chance he had,” I whispered, turning to observe my surroundings.Dean’s scent hit me suddenly. Powerful, intense, enveloping. I turned my face slightly and saw him approaching, dodging some and ignoring others, firm in every step he took.“I will take my Luna away for a few moments,” he announced upon arriving, taking my hand and interlacing our fingers. My heart leaped
Many questions were forming in my head, but none of those she-wolves could give me an answer. My eyes found Dean again; he seemed engrossed in a conversation with his beta and other wolves. The information I got from Eleanor and the other Lunas was pure gold, and I would use it to craft the most spectacular jewel of all.The party continued. The lower-caste wolves and she-wolves seemed more animated and agitated than the Lunas, which was very strange. Our bodies don’t process alcohol the way humans do, so we don’t get drunk no matter how much we drink. Kira appeared behind a particularly rowdy group, her eyes pointing to something on the floor near my foot.A small glass vial, still containing traces of what looked like herbs. I examined the vial curiously, b
I walked through the hall with my head held high. Now, everyone knew who I was and cleared a path so I could move without difficulty. I smiled and nodded, maintaining the image of a sweet and gentle she-wolf.“Miss.” Someone called me. I turned, surprised that anyone would address me so casually after everything that had happened. I looked and saw a group of she-wolves approaching.Five she-wolves, all far too young to be anyone’s mate, which made the interaction even more out of place. Their judgmental gazes swept over my body from head to toe, and then I understood who they were. I glanced beyond the small group and saw Seraphina surrounded by other she-wolves, laughing as they sipped from their glasses.“What a beautiful dress you’re wearing. Could you give us the contact of who made it?” One of the she-wolves stepped closer, trying to touch me, but I pushed her hand away with a sharp slap. The she-wolves looked shocked—very different from everyone else around us. Even I, a mere sl
Even though he looked calm, I could feel the rage exploding inside Dean. His blue eyes gleamed, his smile baring his canines. That interaction was becoming dangerous, and as curious as I was about what Viktor had said, this was far from the best moment to dive deeper into the subject. With little I could do, I grabbed Dean’s arm and made him look at me. I rested my head on his shoulder, giving him a sweet, affectionate look, and the hostile atmosphere vanished completely.“My alpha, may I join the other Lunas? Now that I can be formally introduced, I’d like to get a little closer to the matriarch of Eldermoon.” Viktor’s eyes widened. I could feel the subtle shift in the wolf at the possibility that his event wouldn’t go as he had planned.Dean’s fingers touched my back, pressing gently over the lace. He leaned over me, his lips brushing my ear in an intimate, warm way.“Invite Eleanor to visit our pack,” he whispered, but loud enough for Viktor and the other wolves around us to hear.
I held Gideon's gaze as other wolves approached to clean up the mess he had made. Dean held my hands and carefully pulled me away, increasing the space between Gideon and us, but the Beta quickly advanced, closing the distance even more.Gideon's sudden approach surprised me, and I was frozen for a minute—but it was enough for him to extend his hand toward me, trying to grab my arm. The glass shards crunched on the floor, and Gideon's movements seemed in slow motion as he got closer. However, Gideon barely touched my skin."What do you think you're doing, beta?" Dean growled, grabbing Gideon's wrist with such force that the wolf bent forward, his right knee hitting the ground with a hollow thud.I covered my mouth with my hands, hiding my smile of satisfaction. Yes, that was what I wanted—to see each of them on their knees, humiliated before me, paying for everything they had done. But it still felt wrong. Gideon was being forced by Dean's strength, not by desperation or humiliation.
