Chapter 3: Rejecting Fate

I was kept in isolation at the camp until we returned to Supreme Alpha Viktor Alistair’s court. The march was long, but the differences between my old captor and the Supreme were soon clear. Strong, well-trained wolves; a structure unlike anything I’d seen; and the raw power that rolled off the Supreme Alpha in waves.

“Keep moving, wolf,” one of the escorts growled, shoving me.

When we reached the human trail, my eyes widened at the sight of a small city. Stone walls ringed it; wolves in dark uniforms patrolled and inspected everyone entering. All bowed as the Supreme passed. Families emerged from beautiful homes to watch the procession.

To my eyes, everything was alien. The buildings weren’t forest dens; the main road was paved with something black. At the heart of the pack stood no stone castle, but a towering, mirrored structure.

Low, mocking laughter followed us. I knew it was for me—filthy, dragged in silver chains, dressed in rags while the she-wolves here wore fine clothes.

The Supreme’s presence hit first. Instinctively, I lowered my head and waited. Last night, I’d only seen his icy blue eyes. Curiosity and impulse won; I looked up.

Viktor Alistair was enormous—nearly two meters tall. Black hair streaked with silver showed he was at the peak of his power. Scars and old battles marked every inch of exposed skin. He crossed thick arms over his chest; on one finger gleamed a ring that extended into a long silver claw.

“So that’s what that bastard was hiding so carefully.” The claw’s cold touch burned my chin—pure silver. “Such a jewel buried in filth.” I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for my throat to be slit. Nothing happened.

“What shall we do with this wolf, my alpha?” a soldier asked.

No answer—until a soft, melodic voice rang out.

“My alpha. The goddess has answered my prayers.”

I glanced sideways. A stunning she-wolf approached: long golden hair, flawless skin, a healthy body draped in luxurious clothes and jewels.

“My Luna,” Viktor replied, voice flat.

“I thought… I thought you’d be pleased to have me greet you, my alpha,” she stammered, stepping back.

“Fool.” Suddenly his gaze crushed me. “Clean her and bring her to my chambers.”

“My alpha?!” the Luna cried in disbelief, but silence fell instantly. The slap cracked loudly; her small body hit the ground inches from me.

“You dare question my orders?” he snarled.

I bit my lip, terrified his rage would turn on me. The Luna lay motionless, barely breathing, a single tear rolling down her cheek. Indifferent, the Supreme strode past her toward the mirrored building. Other she-wolves rushed to carry their Luna after him.

“Beta.” One wolf called the huge, scarred, bald man who’d captured me. “What do we do?”

The Beta glared at me with disgust and snarled. “Do exactly as the Supreme commanded. I’ll speak with him.” He left, following the she-wolves.

“Come on, wolf,” a soldier said, dragging me away.

Again, I was bathed and dressed—this time in strange, short, sheer black garments. The chains on my wrists and ankles were removed, but the one around my neck remained.

Walking down a dark corridor, voices drifted from a room. The door flew open; the Beta stormed out, fury blazing at me.

“Unworthy,” he spat through clenched teeth.

“Ignore him. Come in.” Viktor’s order. I was shoved inside; the door locked behind me.

I scanned for escape routes.

“A little thin, but still very beautiful,” he said, approaching. I curled in on myself, fighting his aura. He smiled. “Relax. I’ll be gentle.”

“I don’t want your gentleness,” I hissed.

The Supreme threw his head back and laughed.

“This will be more fun than I thought.” He lunged, seizing my wrist and raising my arm.

“You have a mate!” I shouted, grasping at the bond he should share with his Luna.

“That old, useless wolf serves me no purpose anymore.” He gripped my face hard, forcing me to make eye contact. “But you have…”

His words died. We both froze as revelation struck. A whisper, the goddess’s breath in my ears:

Fate.

Shade howled inside me; my heart raced uncontrollably. Viktor released me as if I had been electrocuted.

“What kind of sick joke is this?!” he roared, grabbing my hair and dragging me from the room.

“Let me go!” I screamed, and horrified stares followed us. He hauled me outside, flung me into the center of a forming circle.

“State your name, wolf,” he commanded.

I bit my lip, holding firm.

“I ordered you to speak your name.” His authority crushed me; Shade whimpered in agony.

“Lyra. My name is Lyra Cynthion.”

The Supreme smiled wickedly.

“I, Viktor Alistair, Supreme Alpha, reject you, Lyra Cynthion, slave, as my fated mate.”

Chapter 37: Lie or Truth? We returned to the hall, my hand resting on Dean’s arm, just in time to witness the most dramatic and exaggerated entrance of the night. I sighed, bored and disappointed with what I was seeing. They entered in a line, presumably in order of hierarchy—the elders of the alliance. Looking at them, no one would call them old; after all, werewolves enjoyed a much longer youth. But it was noticeable that they were no longer at the peak of their strength. As they passed among the guests, wolves and she-wolves lowered their heads in respect for those ancient wolves, but Dean did not join them. He kept his head high, simply waiting for the group to approach. Still, I had to play my part of the innocent and fragile Luna, even though I believed none of those old wolves deserved my respect. When they stopped in front of Dean and me, I bowed with impeccable posture. “Greetings, elders,” I said in a low, delicate voice.“Alpha Dean Valerius, explain this.” The elder at the

With every new interaction I had at the party, I tried to identify who had approached me and spoken those strange words. As if I didn’t already know, I was constantly being watched. Viktor’s allies were everywhere at that party, just as there were those whose trust he was still trying to win—but I highly doubted he would succeed.“That spoiled pup ruined any chance he had,” I whispered, turning to observe my surroundings.Dean’s scent hit me suddenly. Powerful, intense, enveloping. I turned my face slightly and saw him approaching, dodging some and ignoring others, firm in every step he took.“I will take my Luna away for a few moments,” he announced upon arriving, taking my hand and interlacing our fingers. My heart leaped

Many questions were forming in my head, but none of those she-wolves could give me an answer. My eyes found Dean again; he seemed engrossed in a conversation with his beta and other wolves. The information I got from Eleanor and the other Lunas was pure gold, and I would use it to craft the most spectacular jewel of all.The party continued. The lower-caste wolves and she-wolves seemed more animated and agitated than the Lunas, which was very strange. Our bodies don’t process alcohol the way humans do, so we don’t get drunk no matter how much we drink. Kira appeared behind a particularly rowdy group, her eyes pointing to something on the floor near my foot.A small glass vial, still containing traces of what looked like herbs. I examined the vial curiously, b

I walked through the hall with my head held high. Now, everyone knew who I was and cleared a path so I could move without difficulty. I smiled and nodded, maintaining the image of a sweet and gentle she-wolf.“Miss.” Someone called me. I turned, surprised that anyone would address me so casually after everything that had happened. I looked and saw a group of she-wolves approaching.Five she-wolves, all far too young to be anyone’s mate, which made the interaction even more out of place. Their judgmental gazes swept over my body from head to toe, and then I understood who they were. I glanced beyond the small group and saw Seraphina surrounded by other she-wolves, laughing as they sipped from their glasses.“What a beautiful dress you’re wearing. Could you give us the contact of who made it?” One of the she-wolves stepped closer, trying to touch me, but I pushed her hand away with a sharp slap. The she-wolves looked shocked—very different from everyone else around us. Even I, a mere sl

Even though he looked calm, I could feel the rage exploding inside Dean. His blue eyes gleamed, his smile baring his canines. That interaction was becoming dangerous, and as curious as I was about what Viktor had said, this was far from the best moment to dive deeper into the subject. With little I could do, I grabbed Dean’s arm and made him look at me. I rested my head on his shoulder, giving him a sweet, affectionate look, and the hostile atmosphere vanished completely.“My alpha, may I join the other Lunas? Now that I can be formally introduced, I’d like to get a little closer to the matriarch of Eldermoon.” Viktor’s eyes widened. I could feel the subtle shift in the wolf at the possibility that his event wouldn’t go as he had planned.Dean’s fingers touched my back, pressing gently over the lace. He leaned over me, his lips brushing my ear in an intimate, warm way.“Invite Eleanor to visit our pack,” he whispered, but loud enough for Viktor and the other wolves around us to hear.

I held Gideon's gaze as other wolves approached to clean up the mess he had made. Dean held my hands and carefully pulled me away, increasing the space between Gideon and us, but the Beta quickly advanced, closing the distance even more.Gideon's sudden approach surprised me, and I was frozen for a minute—but it was enough for him to extend his hand toward me, trying to grab my arm. The glass shards crunched on the floor, and Gideon's movements seemed in slow motion as he got closer. However, Gideon barely touched my skin."What do you think you're doing, beta?" Dean growled, grabbing Gideon's wrist with such force that the wolf bent forward, his right knee hitting the ground with a hollow thud.I covered my mouth with my hands, hiding my smile of satisfaction. Yes, that was what I wanted—to see each of them on their knees, humiliated before me, paying for everything they had done. But it still felt wrong. Gideon was being forced by Dean's strength, not by desperation or humiliation.
