*Isla*

I'm jolted awake not by a bell, but by a sound… a low, resonant sound that vibrates through the wooden floorboards and into my bones. It's the Alpha's Call, a psychic summons that pulls every wolf on campus out of their beds or tells us to assemble.

I sit up, my muscles screaming in protest, a fresh wave of pain radiating from my shoulder and down my leg. Liora is already moving, her movements quick and economical. There are no lazy mornings here, and I need to ignore the pain, I can show weakness on my second day here.

We pull on the rough grey training tunic and trousers we were issued, the fabric scratchy against my skin. The mess hall is a cavernous space filled with the low hum of hundreds of conversations and the clatter of wooden bowls. The food is bland… porridge, dried meat, and a dark, bitter brew that's supposed to wake you up.

I eat mechanically, forcing down the fuel my body is craving and no doubt will be needing, my eyes scanning the room. I see my brother Ian laughing with a group of second-years, and for a moment, my chest tightens. He looks so at ease, so certain he belongs. Then I spot Cedric, sitting with a few other second-years, and he catches my eye for a split second. He offers a small, tight smile that doesn't reach his eyes, then quickly looks away. An already familiar knot of disappointment forms in my stomach. Same old Cedric. Too worried about what others think.

After the meal, we're herded out into the courtyard. The air is crisp and sharp. At the front stand several instructors, their faces grim and imposing. They are elite warriors, their scars a testament to their years of service. One of them, a woman with a long silver braid and eyes the color of a winter sky, steps forward.

"Provisionals and cadets!" Her voice cuts through the morning air, sharp and clear. "Welcome to your second day. Yesterday you proved you have the grit to stand on this ground. Today, we begin to shape that grit into steel. You will be sorted into your training companies. You will live, train, eat, and fight with your company for the duration of your time here. Your loyalty is to them above all else. Your success is their success. Your failure is theirs, too."

She gestures to a large, wooden board standing beside her, covered in names. "When your name is called, step forward. You will receive your company insignia. Your company leader will be waiting to take you to your designated training grounds. Do not keep them waiting."

A hush falls over the crowd. Names begin to be called out. "Soren of the Red Paw!" A beefy boy with a nervous expression steps forward and is handed a patch of dark red fabric with a stylized claw print. "Elara of the Sunstone Pack!" A tall, elegant girl accepts a patch of brilliant yellow, a burning sun at its center.

My hands are clammy. I can feel Liora beside me, a knot of silent tension. I don't know where I want to be, only where I don't. I want away from Ian's shadow, and I desperately want to avoid the being in Cedric's company, having him hover over me. I want to be with Liora, as She is the only other person I know. That's all.

"Astrid of the Frostwind Pack!"

"Bjorn of the Ironfang!"

Names are read, people step up, getting sorted. I hold my breath, my heart hammering against my ribs with every syllable.

"Liora Elva!"

Liora gives my arm a quick, hard squeeze before stepping forward. "The Nightshade Company," the instructor announces, handing her a patch of deep purple, nearly black, fabric embroidered with a single, silver thorned vine.

The instructor keeps calling names, her voice a steady, indifferent drone. I'm not listening anymore, just waiting. The courtyard is thinning out as cadets are sent to their corners.

"Isla Ulvehjerte."

My name hangs in the air. My name. My father's name. I can feel a hundred pairs of eyes turn to me. whispers start. Ulvehjerte. The General's daughter. I force my chin up, my shoulders back, ignoring the throb in the left one. I limp forward, each step a deliberate act of defiance towards everyone that thinks me weak.

I hold out my hand, waiting for my patch.

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    The pain proving

*Isla* At dawn, the trial hall smells of wet sand and cold iron. The wardkeepers have stripped the floor to bare stone and rebuilt the proving circle from scratch. Fresh sand lies inside the silver boundary lines. The old brass anchors have been removed under Cedric's supervision and placed in a sealed box at the judges' table. That is what everyone can see. Sena checks the brace beneath my trousers for the third time. Her fingers move quickly around the buckles. She has made me stand behind a canvas screen near the witness rail, out of sight of the benches. "Too tight?" she asks. "No." She gives me a look. I try again. "Not yet." "That is a real answer." "Do not get used to it." "I am writing the date down." The screen does not block the sound of the hall. Pack delegates filing into their benches. Academy officers whispering over papers. The scrape of Veyr's chair against stone. Somewhere, a torch is being lit. My hands are cold. The metal button at my collar has warm

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    Names before fire

*Isla* The trial hall is fuller than it was yesterday. News travels faster when it smells like scandal. Every bench is occupied. March delegates in dark formal coats. Academy officers in gray. Trainees pressed along the upper gallery until the wardens force them back from the rail. The torch bowls burn low, their smoke threading beneath the high ceiling. At the center of the hall, the silver lines in the floor wait. I do not step inside them until Cedric tells me to. He stands at the evidence table with his document case open and three ledgers laid out in front of him. His cuffs are neat. His hair has been tied back. A black ink pen rests between his fingers. It is shaking. Only slightly. Caelen stands behind the Nightshade rope with Tomas, Lark, Torven, Sena, and Liora. Sava sits at the end of the row between Torven and Lark, her wrists bound in front of her with soft cloth. She has not looked at me since the salt-store pier. Bran is there too. He is pale, still wrapped ar

*Isla* Sava sleeps in Lark's bed with one wrist tied to the frame by a strip of cloth. Not tight. Not cruel. Tight enough that she cannot vanish before dawn. Lark sits on the floor beside her with a knife across her knees and the brass trial pin wrapped in oilcloth beside her boot. She has not said much since we came back from the river. I do not blame her. No one in Nightshade is sleeping. The common room is lit by one low lamp and the red coals of the hearth. Tomas has taken first watch at the window. Torven is cleaning mud from the serving knife he used in the archive stairwell. Sena is bent over maps with Cedric, marking the trial hall's anchor points from memory. Caelen stands apart from all of us. He is by the closed shutters, holding a long narrow case made of pale wood. I have seen it once before, wedged beneath his field trunk. I assumed it held some kind of blade. It might as well. Cedric finishes comparing the brass pin to the copied trial diagram. He rubs at his e

*Isla* The salt-store pier crouches behind the Academy's eastern warehouses, where the river narrows under the old wall. No trainee comes here after dark unless they are hiding something, stealing something, or meeting someone they should not trust. The salt sheds lean over the black water with their doors swollen shut from rain. White crust stains the boards. The air tastes sharp enough to sting a cut. Lark found the trail. Not a trail exactly. A smear of archive wax on the broken window latch. A thread caught on a gutter nail. Bare footprints in the mud leading away from the administration wing, then vanishing beneath cart tracks. She followed what she could until the river wind took over. "I told you not to come alone," she says behind me. "You told me to wait for Torven." She nods, "Yes." "I considered it." "That is not the same as listening." We stand beneath the shadow of the furthest salt shed. Rain has stopped, but water still drops from the eaves in slow hard taps.

*Isla* The oath fire spits blue sparks into the rushes. One lands beside my boot and burns through the dry reeds without flame. Another skips across the stone toward the Nightshade benches. Torven kicks it aside before it reaches Lark's skirt, but it bursts against his heel in a flash of cold light. The hall erupts. Chairs scrape back. Pack delegates rise with hands on weapons. Academy officers shout for the doors to be sealed. The musicians stop in the middle of a note. Caelen's hand is still at my waist. "Move," he says. I do. We turn toward Nightshade, but the blue light has already changed direction. It runs across the floor in thin, frantic threads, not toward the benches now. Toward me. My wolf wakes hard under my skin. The first spark hits beneath my collarbone. It feels like a needle driven straight through bone. I gasp. Caelen catches my elbow before my knee gives out. He does not hold me there. His grip loosens the moment I regain my feet. "What happened?" he

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    The courtesy feast

*Isla* They stand beneath the black-and-silver banners of the March packs, hands clasped in front of them, eyes moving over the tables. The great hall has been dressed for ceremony. Long candles burn in iron bowls. Fresh rushes cover the floor to hide the old smell of damp stone. Platters of roasted meat and dark bread steam beneath the torchlight. Nobody is eating. I sit where Speaker Veyr puts me. That is the first insult. My place is halfway down the central table, with Claimant Dorran on my left and an Academy officer I do not know on my right. Veyr takes the head of the table. Caelen has been placed three seats away, near the end, where he can see me but cannot reach me without making a scene. The distance is deliberate. So is the wine. A servant fills the silver cup before me with something pale and red. The scent rises at once. Sweet. Heavy. Under the fruit is a bitter mineral note that makes my wolf pull back inside me. Dulling root. I have smelled it in infirmary d
