(Kiana – POV, Present Tense)

Laughter fills the palace gardens, bright and unrestrained. My sisters Selene, Cerys and Nyara chase each other between the flowerbeds, their skirts brushing the dewy grass. I bend to tie a ribbon in Cerys’s hair, and she squeals, tugging free and running toward Selene. The morning sun warms my shoulders, the scent of roses heavy in the air.

Even the guards seem lighter today, their smiles fleeting but genuine as they watch us play. For a moment, the world is perfect. Laughter, sunlight, flowers, and the gentle hum of palace life. I feel it deep in my chest ,the calm before anything can disturb it.

A loud, frantic banging at the gates shatters the tranquility. A messenger bursts into the courtyard, mud streaked on his legs, chest heaving. “My king! My king!” he shouts, voice raw with terror.

King Thalric rises instantly, his cloak swirling around him as he strides toward the man. His golden eyes narrow. “What is it?” His voice carries the weight of command, steady, unshaken, but urgency presses beneath it.

The messenger swallows hard, trembling. “The villages… smoke… they’ve been attacked. Fires… soldiers… Ethra’s people…” His words tumble out, disjointed, desperate.

Thalric’s jaw tightens. “Which village?” His tone is sharp, precise, controlled.

“The one by the river… Lord Veylan’s lands… it’s destroyed, my king!”

I clutch the edge of the nearby fountain, heart hammering. Selene steps close, her hand on my arm, eyes wide. Even Nyara, calm and composed as she is, pales. I glance at Cerys, the youngest, trying to smile through fear.

Father’s gaze sweeps over us, resolute and commanding. “We move immediately,” he declares. “Soldiers, prepare to leave. Kiana, Selene, Cerys, Nyara, you ride with me. The villages must be aided. Do not wait for the enemy to strike again.”

“Yes, Father,” I reply, strapping my sword to my side, voice steady despite the surge of adrenaline. My sisters nod, eyes flashing determination.

Horses whinny as they are saddled. The knights fall into formation, armor catching the sunlight, weapons ready. We mount, the earth trembling beneath hooves as we move through the palace gates. I glance back once, toward the gardens and the laughter now swallowed by the shadow of news, and then forward. Duty presses on me, heavy but resolute.

The journey is long, winding through forests and hills. Birds scatter as our procession passes, startled into the sky. Smoke drifts faintly in the distance, black against the morning sun. Every mile brings a tense silence; the air smells faintly of ash, though the villages are still far off.

Selene rides close, whispering, “Do you think anyone survived?”

I shake my head slowly. “I hope so. But we cannot waste time with hope alone. We must act. We will protect them.”

Cerys grips her reins tightly, knuckles white. “I I’m ready,” she stammers.

I glance at her, a small, reassuring smile forming. “We all are.”

As the sun climbs higher, the river comes into view. Smoke curls above the treetops, black and thick. I tighten my grip on the reins, heart pounding in rhythm with the pounding of hooves. The village is almost upon us. I can see the roofs blackened, walls splintered, people fleeing in terror.

Soldiers spread out immediately, guiding survivors to safety, extinguishing smaller fires, and preparing for any remaining threats. My sisters and I jump into the chaos without hesitation, helping the injured, comforting those who weep, and moving with purpose. Every glance, every step, every decision is measured. Lives depend on it.

The smell of smoke and ash fills the air, mingling with the scent of wet earth and scorched wood. Fear hangs heavy over the village, but we impose order where we can. I give instructions quickly, efficiently, my voice cutting through the cries and crackle of fire.

A woman clutches her child to her chest, tears streaking soot across her face. I kneel beside her, helping her to a safer path. “You’re safe now,” I say softly, though my voice carries over the chaos. She nods shakily, clutching her child tighter. Even small reassurances matter. Even a moment of calm can save lives.

I take a moment to scan the horizon. The enemy is nowhere in sight, but I know better. This is only the beginning. Someone powerful and precise is behind this attack. I feel it in the air, in the way the smoke curls, in the panic of those who survived. Patience and caution will be our allies. We help now, we fight if necessary, but we do not act recklessly.

Selene and Cerys work at my side, efficient and focused, but their hands shake. I offer encouragement when I can, short, sharp words of command or reassurance. Even in chaos, leadership matters. Even in fear, we must remain steady.

Smoke rises into the sky, curling like dark fingers. I glance at the horizon again. Ethra is not safe. And yet, I will not let it fall without a fight. The villagers survive today because we arrived in time, because we act with purpose, because we do not panic.

The sun is high now, heat pressing down, but we continue. There is no rest until every injured person is accounted for, every fire under control, and every defenseless soul protected. And I will see it done.

Even as my shoulders ache, even as my throat burns from shouting, I do not falter. I cannot.

Because duty is heavier than fear.

Because leadership is heavier than fear.

Because courage, when it is demanded, must be unyielding even in the shadow of fire, smoke, and devastation.

And I will remain unyielding.

  • The human queen    👑 Chapter Twenty: The Departure of Silence

King Idra – POV, The ceremony means nothing once it is done. What matters Is what follows. The palace does not celebrate. There is no music. No laughter. Only silence. Heavy. Unwelcome. As expected. Preparations are already underway by the time I step out of the hall. The stone beneath my boots echoes with each movement, sharp and deliberate, cutting through the stillness that has settled over the palace like a storm waiting to break. My men move efficiently. Horses are readied in the courtyard, their breath visible in the cool air. Carriages stand in position, polished and prepared. Guards line the outer walls, watchful and disciplined, their armor glinting faintly beneath the dull sky. We leave today. I do not intend to remain here longer than necessary. Behind me, I hear her footsteps. Unsteady. But present. She follows. Good. I do not turn to look at her. There is nothing I need to confirm. Obedience has already been secured. “She wil

  • The human queen    👑 Chapter Nineteen: The Claim

King Idra – POV, The priest is speaking. I do not listen. His voice fills the hall, steady and practiced, words meant to give meaning to something that no longer needs it. Words meant to comfort those who stand watching, to make them believe this moment carries honor instead of surrender. None of it matters. The doors open. And everything else fades. She walks in. Kiana. Her steps are slow. Careful. As if each one costs her something she cannot afford to give. Tears fall silently down her face, catching the light before disappearing against her skin. They move without restraint, leaving faint shining paths along her cheeks. She does not wipe them away. She does not try to hide them. Good. My gaze does not leave her. Not for a second. I watch everything. The way her hands tremble slightly at her sides. The faint tightening of her fingers as if she wants to reach for something that is no longer there. The way her shoulders remain tense, held too ti

  • The human queen    👑 Chapter Eighteen: The Hour That Breaks

Kiana – POV, I don’t understand. The words echo in my mind, louder than everything else around me. One hour. The wedding will take place in one hour. I stare at him as he walks away, his presence still lingering long after he is gone. The air feels colder now, heavier, like something has shifted that cannot be undone. My body feels wrong. Too still. Too heavy. As if I have forgotten how to move. Then I turn. My eyes find my father. “Father…?” My voice trembles. So do my hands. “What is he talking about?” No one answers. The silence presses against me, thick and suffocating. It fills the space between us until it feels like I cannot breathe inside it. I take a step forward. My breath grows uneven now, my chest tightening with something I cannot name. Something sharp and spreading. “Father, what is he talking about?” I ask again, louder this time. He looks at me. But not the way he usually does. Not with warmth. Not with patience. There is something in his eyes

  • The human queen    👑 Chapter Seventeen: What Is Taken

King Idra – POV, I do not wait. I never have. The moment I enter the palace, I can feel it. Tension beneath the surface. Fear, carefully hidden. Hope, clinging to something that no longer belongs to them. They know why I am here. Even if they pretend they do not. This time, there is no disguise. No shadows. No need for subtlety. I walk through the halls as I always do. Unstopped. Unquestioned. Power does not need to announce itself. It is recognized. Servants move aside before I reach them. Guards lower their heads without being commanded. The air shifts wherever I pass, like wind before a storm. Even those who do not understand who I am understand what I am. Danger. Authority. Endings. The guards open the study doors without being told. He is already inside. Waiting. Good. The doors close behind me with a quiet final sound that settles into the room like a lock falling into place. King Thalric stands behind his desk. Rigid. Controlled. But there is strai

  • The human queen    👑 Chapter Sixteen: The Weight of a Crown

King Thalric – POV, The hall empties slowly after he leaves. No one speaks. No one dares. I remain where I stand long after the doors have closed behind him. Kiana. The name echoes louder now. Not as a daughter. Not as laughter in the halls. As a price. My hands tighten at my sides, fingers curling until the tension burns into my palms. One day. He gives me one day. As if time is something I still control. As if choice remains mine to make. I turn at last, walking out of the hall with measured steps. No one stops me. No one questions me. Guards bow their heads as I pass, their eyes fixed on the floor, unwilling to meet my gaze. Because they already know. There is no solution. Only a choice. And I already hate it. The walk to the Queen’s chambers feels heavier than any battlefield I have stood on. Each step drags against the weight pressing down on my chest. I have faced war. I have watched soldiers fall beside me. I have carried wounded men from fields soaked in b

  • The human queen    👑 Chapter Fifteen: The Price Named

(King Thalric – POV, ) He does not arrive like other kings. No grand procession. No needless display. And yet The moment I am told he has entered my palace, I feel it. A shift in the air. A tightening in the chest. A warning that arrives without sound. “King Idra awaits in the great hall, my king.” I rise immediately. Too quickly, perhaps. But this is not a man I keep waiting. The walk to the hall feels longer than it should. Each step measured. Each thought heavier than the last. The corridor stretches before me like something endless, lined with guards who stand straighter than usual, their hands firm on their weapons. They feel it too. Even those who have never seen him know what kind of man enters these halls today. Power announces itself without words. When the doors open I see him. Standing at the center. Still. Unmoved. He does not bow. Of course he does not. His presence alone bends the room around him. Dark hair, controlled and precise. Shoulders bro
