Eva’s POV

My chest heaved as I stared into Lucian’s storm-gray eyes, my back pressed so hard against the study wall that the wood trim bit into my spine.

"I... I don't know what you are talking about, My Lord," I forced out, my voice trembling despite my desperate attempt to sound composed. "I told you before—I only attended the masquerade to see what a grand party was like. I stayed near the courtyard."

Lucian didn't budge. He stepped closer, his heavy shadow completely smothering me, his gaze dropping to the edge of my apron before locking back onto my face with deadly focus.

"What color was your dress, Eva?" he asked, his deep voice dropping into a low, quiet command that echoed in the dark room.

My throat went bone-dry. The air in the study felt suffocatingly thick. "I... I told you, it was simple—"

"What color?" he repeated, leaning down until his lips were inches from my ear, his breath warm against my skin. "Tell me."

I swallowed hard, looking up into his unblinking eyes. I saw the sharp, relentless intelligence behind them. He had already eliminated every noblewoman on his list. He had matched the timing. He had matched the stance. There was no lie left in the world that could save me now.

"...Yellow," I whispered softly.

The word hung in the quiet space between us like a physical blow.

Lucian’s eyes flared with a sudden, searing intensity. A quiet, breathless beat passed as the realization settled between us—raw, heavy, and undeniable.

"It was you," he murmured, his voice laced with a dangerous mixture of shock and satisfaction. "We shared that Dance. You were the woman in yellow."

I looked down, unable to meet his gaze any longer as my heart hammered violently against my ribs. Silence was my only confession.

"Why did you lie to me?" Lucian demanded, his hand reaching out to slam lightly against the wall right beside my head, trapping me completely. "Why are you here? Did you know it was me you danced with that night? Is that why you chose to work at Valenridge? Were you looking for me?"

"No!" I blurted out, my head snapping up as panic seized my throat. "No, My Lord! I swear to you, no! I already had this job before that night! I didn't plan on sharing a dance with you—I didn't even know who you were until you pulled me onto that floor!"

I reached out blindly, my trembling fingers clutching the heavy linen of his lapels. I pulled myself up slightly toward him, my eyes wide and pleading as tears of sheer desperation pricked the corners of my vision.

"I didn't know it would happen," I begged, my breath erratic as I searched his cold face. "I am sorry! I am so sorry I didn't tell you! But please... please, My Lord, I beg of you—do not tell your mother about the dance. Do not tell anyone I was at that ball. Please..."

Lucian stood entirely still, his gaze dropping to my hands clutching his coat, then moving slowly up to my eyes. The rigid posture he held didn't soften, but the harsh edge in his breathing changed, heavy and unsteady against the quiet room.

"Please, Lucian," I whispered, using his name without thinking, my voice cracking under the weight of my terror. "Please."

He stared at me for three agonizingly long seconds, his jaw clenching tightly. Slowly, he reached up, his large, warm hand gently untangling my white-knuckled fingers from his shirt.

"I need to think," he said flatly.

Before I could say another word, Lucian turned on his heel, unlocked the heavy oak door, and stepped out into the dim hallway, letting the door swing shut behind him with a quiet, hollow click.

I collapsed against the wall, my knees trembling so violently I could barely stand.

He hadn't promised to keep my secret. He hadn't threatened to expose me. He had simply walked away, leaving me suspended over an open abyss.

Lucian’s POV

My chest was on fire, my thoughts spinning out of control as I stormed down the dimly lit hallway toward the east wing.

Without knocking, I threw open the heavy oak door to Leo’s private quarters.

I stopped dead in my tracks, pressing two fingers firmly against the bridge of my nose as I let out a harsh, sharp sigh.

Leo was half-naked on his feather bed, a tavern courtezan draped entirely over his chest, her bare back exposed to the flickering candlelight.

"Out," I commanded flatly, pointing a stern finger toward the door.

The woman gasped, sitting up quickly and looking at Leo to confirm.

Leo, completely undeterred by the intrusion, merely sighed and patted her thigh lazily. "You heard the man, love. Duty calls."

The courtezan gathered her discarded silk robe, wrapping it loosely around her bare frame as she scurried past me out into the corridor, muttering under her breath about rude lords and ruined evenings.

Leo sat up on the edge of the mattress, running a hand through his messy hair. He wore only his dark trousers, his bare torso glistening under the lamplight as he crossed his arms.

"Hey, hey! What in the high heavens is wrong with you, Lucian?" Leo complained, rubbing his eyes. "You couldn't have waited ten minutes?"

"It’s Eva," I blurted out, my voice thick with a strange, turbulent edge I couldn't suppress. "She is the lady in the yellow dress. The one I shared that Dance with."

Leo went dead quiet. His eyes widened slightly as he stared at me, all the lazy humor draining from his face in a single second. "Oh. Wow."

He stood up from the bed, stepping toward me with a serious, searching look. "So... what happens now?"

"I don't know!" I snapped, running both hands through my dark hair as I paced the Persian rug. "I don't know, Leo! That night on the terrace... there was something between me and that girl in yellow. The dance felt refreshing. It felt different. There was a genuine spark. But with Eva the maid? Ever since the day I met her, there has been nothing. Just quietness, distant answers, and rigid boundaries."

I stopped pacing, looking at my brother in total, desperate confusion. "How can I feel so drawn to a memory, but feel nothing for the woman standing right in front of me? Is it just the yellow silk I was attracted to? What is wrong with me?"

Leo tilted his head, watching me with a quiet, surprisingly perceptive intensity. "Well... you haven't exactly spoken to Eva properly, have you? You haven't given her a real chance to see if a connection exists outside of her holding a dusting rag."

He paused, stepping closer and dropping his voice into a low, dangerous register. "So... do you want to marry her or what?"

"Are you mad?" I scoffed, staring at him as if he had lost his mind entirely. "A maid? I cannot marry a maid!"

Leo let out a dry, bitter chuckle, shaking his head. "Right. I forgot. Mother would kill you, and Father would bury you alive right beside the estate gates." He crossed his arms over his bare chest again. "So what are you going to do? Are you going to tell them?"

"I don't know," I muttered, backing toward the open doorway as a suffocating weight pressed down on my shoulders. "I just... I need to clear my head. I'm going out."

"Lucian, wait—"

"You could always just marry Genevieve," Leo called out dryly behind me, leaning against his doorframe with a wicked, playful smirk returning to his lips. "She has an amazing body, at least!"

I ignored him, turning on my heel and striding down the corridor to escape the madness of this house.

"Hey!" Leo shouted down the hall after my retreating shadow, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "Send back the woman you just kicked out! She had me in the mood already!"

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 57: UNRAVELED SECRETS

Eva’s POV I pressed my back flat against the cool stone wall of the alcove, holding my breath as Laura passed by. Her heavy silk skirts rustled against the floorboards before her footsteps finally faded down the corridor. Once the coast was clear, I looked down at the velvet cushion and parchment ledgers in my arms—the preparations for the gala would simply have to wait. I dropped the stack onto a nearby side table, turned on my heel, and quietly trailed after the guard Laura had instructed. I kept a discreet distance, watching him navigate the long passage toward the courtyard doors. I needed those letters. If Laura was plotting something against me—or against the family—I couldn't afford to remain in the dark. "You there! Halt," I called out, keeping my voice authoritative yet calm as I closed the distance between us. The guard stopped immediately, turning around and bowing his head. "My Lady? How may I assist you?" "I need your help with an urgent matter regarding

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 56: VOWS IN THE SHADOWS

Lady Eleanor’s POV The estate was wrapped in a suffocating, pitch-black silence. Slipping out of the grand bed, I made sure Arthur’s rhythmic breathing remained undisturbed before wrapping a dark woolen cloak over my shoulders. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as I crept down the back servants' stairs, slipping out into the cool, damp night air. I moved quickly toward the quiet edge of the courtyard, where the shadows swallowed the stone archways whole. A tall figure stepped out from the darkness. James. The moment his face came into view under the pale moonlight, the dam broke inside me. I rushed into his arms, burying my face into his chest as hot tears spilled down my cheeks. "James... oh, James, I am so sorry," I sobbed, my voice trembling with the heavy weight of my guilt. "I am so, so sorry I did this to us." James wrapped his arms around me tight, holding me against the chill of the night. He lifted a hand, gently wiping the tears from my cheeks

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 55: SHADOWS AND BARGAINS

Genevieve’s POV I didn't bother knocking. I simply pushed open the heavy mahogany doors to Leo’s private study and strode inside like I owned the place. Leo was sitting at his easel, shirtless, a smudge of dark charcoal dusting his collarbone. He froze, paintbrush suspended in mid-air, and glared at me over his shoulder with sheer annoyance. "Have you no bloody manners, Genevieve?" he snapped, grabbing a discarded tunic off the back of his chair and throwing it over his head. I leaned against the doorframe, folding my arms with a sly, triumphant smile. "Well, I used to... until I saw what you were trying to do with your brother's wife in the garden yesterday." Leo’s jaw tightened, his hazel eyes darkening instantly. "Are you going to keep dragging that out?" "I need a favor from you," I said, dropping the smug act and taking a step toward his desk. Leo let out a dry, bitter laugh, adjusting his shirt. "A favor? And why on earth would I do you a favor?" "Because you hav

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 54: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Lucian’s POVWarmth enveloped me before my eyes even opened. The heavy, suffocating paralysis had receded, leaving my body exhausted but functional once more. As my vision adjusted to the morning light filtering through the heavy drapes, I realized I was still on the hard floor, resting against someone. It was Eva. She was fast asleep, leaning against the side of the velvet armchair with her head tilted slightly toward mine.I stayed still for a long second, my gaze trailing over her features. Up close, without her sharp wit or guarded glares, she looked startlingly soft. Her dark lashes rested long against her cheeks, framing the fine, sculpted line of her jawline. I didn't mean to stare—I wasn't the kind of man to succumb to sentimentality—but I couldn't deny the striking composure of her face. Then reality hit me like a bucket of ice water. She saw everything. She had found me completely frozen, helpless, and hyperventilating on the floor. Anxiety spiked in my chest. Knowing

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 53: AN ANCHOR IN THE DARK

Eva’s POV The hallway outside Lucian’s bedchamber was quiet, but a lingering sense of unease pulled me toward his door. After the humiliating chaos in the garden with Leo and Genevieve, I needed to face him—to ground myself, or perhaps just to prove that I wasn't losing my mind. I pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped inside. The room was pitch-black, swallowed entirely by shadows. The fireplace had died down to faint, glowing embers, leaving the chamber cold and oppressive. Reaching for a match, I lit the wall sconces, allowing soft, amber light to flood the room. My gaze swept across the floor—and my heart instantly stopped. "Lucian?" I gasped. He was collapsed on the hardwood floor beside the velvet armchair. He wasn't moving. His body was completely still, his eyes wide, fixed unblinkingly on the dark ceiling above. Beside him lay the shattered remains of a glass, water pooling around the broken shards. Panic seized my chest. "Lucian! Lucian!" I rushed to his

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 52: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Eva’s POV Genevieve’s sharp voice cut through the dusk like a shattered blade, sending a cold, horrifying panic straight through my veins. I immediately scrambled away from Leo, pushing myself off the grass and stumbling to my feet. Leo stood up right beside me, smoothing down his coat with a hasty, awkward flick of his hands. The air between the three of us turned suffocatingly tense. Genevieve took a slow step closer, her hands placed on her hips, her expression a mix of sheer disbelief and growing peevishness. "That... is your brother's wife, My Lord," she spat, her eyes darting between Leo and me. "Have you both completely lost your senses?!" "No—no! That is not what happened at all!" I stammered, my voice trembling as heat rushed into my cheeks. "I tripped on the grass, and—and we just fell! It was an accident!" Genevieve raised a single, cynical eyebrow, her look making it abundantly clear that she didn't believe a word of my pathetic lie. Oh God. I couldn't even b
