Zareth’s POV

“What surprise?” I smiled at Mae, my voice soft but curious.

Mae hesitated for a second, her eyes flicking away like she was hiding something.

“Well… you have to see for yourself,” she said finally, her tone lighter than her expression as she grabbed my wrist and pulled me from the bed toward the castle sitting room.

“Mom?” I gasped, my steps slowing the moment I entered.

The room felt different instantly. Too quiet. Too controlled.

Mom was sitting upright in a chair near the windo

  • The lycan king’s regret     THE VALE ALPHA

Kaelor’s POVI was staring at the person walking down the hall trying to understand what I was seeing. The person had Black Hollows banners and an Alphas cloak I had always thought that title belonged to men like Garrick Vale. The hood covered most of the persons face. I saw something familiar in the way they walked. They were confident and not afraid of the rulers, in the room.My wolf, who was weak stirred beside me it was like my wolf knew the person. Then out of nowhere I did it.She lifted the hood off her head. All the air left my lungs.Mae.Not the Mae I remembered, the one who had threatened to kill me in the hallway of Ashbournes place. Not the Mae who had spent weeks sitting in a chair beside her sisters bed. This was a different person. She was wearing a silver circlet in her hair, which was a symbol of being the Alpha of Black Hollow. It looked really good on her.Zareth, who was standing next to me whispered, "Oh."That was a good response considering what was happening.

  • The lycan king’s regret     TRIAL BY CROWN

Zareth’s POVI was watching from the witness gallery as the color left Kaelors face.It was not fear I had seen him scared on battlefields, when the doctors said I would die, when he thought I would leave him. This was different this was like he understood something.Whatever the old law was that the Elder just talked about Kaelor knew how bad it was away. That meant I should be more worried than I already was.One of the Elders said, "The ritual King Kaelor did is a kind of magic that has been forbidden since the Blood Accords."The hall was silent.Another Elder said, "This magic does not just give you strength it changes your fate it changes the balance that the Moon Goddess wanted."I did not like the sound of that. One of the rulers asked, "What is the punishment?"The Elder did not wait to answer "The punishment is losing your title you cannot be king anymore and in cases you go to jail."The whole hall started talking at the time.My eyes found Kaelor he did not look at me.He

  • The lycan king’s regret     THE SUMMIT DEMAND

Kaelors POV We had two weeks to get ready for the Continental Summit. Fourteen days to defend my crown it did not feel like time. We had to explain a lot of things a war, a scandal, a noblewoman in prison and a forbidden ritual that almost killed me. It was a lot to handle. The Elder Lycan Council did not send invitations they sent judgments. “They have only met seven times in the hundred years " James said, reading the documents. Sabriel asked, "What were the other times?” James listed them on his fingers. “The Southern Purge, the Blackmoon Rebellion, the execution of the Iron King, the Fall of Velaris—” This was not comforting all. James continued, "No one has ever walked away from an Elder Summit unchanged.” That got everyones attention. Even my wolf was uneasy. The council chambers were really busy over the few days. One councilman said, "You cannot take her her presence will only make things worse.” Zareth said, "My presence seems to be everyones argument these d

  • The lycan king’s regret     WHAT SURVIVES

Zareth’s POVThe days after the battle were a blur of healing tents, council meetings and funeral pyres burning outside Ashbourne’s walls. We did not really win. Many people were hurt too many names were added to the memorial list.I spent most of my time helping the healers because I did not want to sit around while everyone else worked.More than once I caught people staring at me. Not with pity this time. With respect. For the time in months I was not "the wolfless girl."I was the woman the king had almost died to save.I found Kaelor in his room one evening sitting against the headboard with reports all over his lap.He looked really tired. There were gray hairs in his hair that I did not remember seeing before the ritual.I told him he should be sleeping. He said I should be sleeping too.I said he should sleep first. He smiled a little. He said "You being alive has made you a lot harder to argue with."I asked him about what Aldric said. About the prophecy, about his bloodline.

  • The lycan king’s regret     THE KING OF THORNWOOD

Kaelor met the King in the space between their lines his legs still shaking with exhaustion. James moved to follow. Kaelor said, "Stay back." The King was everything I expected him to be. Unhurried, precise, a man who had never once needed to shout to be obeyed. He said, "Your Majesty you look like a king whos had a month." Kaelor said, "I've had worse ". The King just smiled. He said, "Have you?" His gaze flicked to Kaelors cane. He said, "No I don't believe you have."Kaelor said, "Your daughter poisoned my sister and framed a woman for it. Your son led an assassination attempt against me. I'd say we've both had months Aldric." The Kings face didn't change,. I could sense a flicker of amusement behind his eyes.He said, "My daughter inherited my ambition. My son inherited his mothers conscience." It was a thing to say and it sent a shiver down my spine. Kaelor said, "You say that as though either excuses them " and the King just said, "No merely explains them."The King didn't flinc

  • The lycan king’s regret     THE DUEL

Zareths POVI screamed Kaelors name. The sound got lost in the noise of the battle. For one moment all I could see was history repeating itself.A ritual hall. A sentence passed. Kaelor standing helpless while I paid the price. This time we had traded places.Somehow that felt worse.Kaelors blade met Alexanders with a force that should have knocked him flat given how strength I knew he actually had left.Alexander saw it too.He said, "You are weaker than the reports suggested. You gave away half your life for her."Kaelor did not answer. His silence was answer enough.I pushed through the chaos shoving soldiers twice my size, my heart in my throat with every step that did not get me close enough fast enough.Someone grabbed my arm.He said, "Lady Zareth fall back!"I said, "No."He said, "You will die there!"I said, "Then I will die annoyed, about it!"I tore free before he could stop me.Sabriel cut through the crowd ahead of me claws already bloodied, driving off a Thornwood sold
