Avery’s POV:

When I woke up, I found myself in a bed.

The room was quiet, too polished and clean.

I’d been pacing for hours, the smooth marble floor scuffed from my boots. Every time I tried the door, it was locked from the outside. Every time I leaned out the window, I saw the long stretch of Rafa’s estate grounds patrolled by his men and they were all armed, which frustrated me.

I banged on the door for so long but nobody came in or answered me but I knew they were they cause I could hear their footsteps. My hand hurt from hitting the door too much. I could have picked the lock but I don’t know how many of them were out there and I’m very sure they had weapons and I wasn’t foolish enough to head out there without a plan or a weapon.

When the door finally creaked open, I spun on my heel, ready to hurl every curse I knew in his direction but I was distracted when he strolled inside like he owned the place and technically he did but I didn’t care. A black shirt clung to his chest, the sleeves rolled to his elbows and his tattoo peaking out from it. He looked like he had just finished some kind of dirty work. He shut the door behind him and leaned against it, watching me like I was an interesting movie.

“You’ve been pacing,” he said. His voice was calm and lazy like he was amused.

I scowled. “Maybe because I’m being held captive.”

“You’re not a prisoner,” Rafa corrected smoothly. “You’re my guest.”

“Guests can leave,” I snapped.

He smiled, slow and dangerous. “Not always.”

I hated the way that smile did things to me. My stomach flipped and I felt my chest tighten, and every inch of me itched to close the distance even while I wanted to claw his eyes out.

Rafa pushed off the door and walked toward me, unhurried. His presence filled the room before he even touched me. I forced myself not to back away, even though instinct screamed at me to move.

“Why am I here?” I demanded. “Really. What do you want from me?”

He tilted his head, studying me like I was something fascinating. “You came into my meeting, disrupted my men, stabbed my right-hand man…”

“He touched me first,” I cut in sharply.

“…and then warned me about a hit on my life.” He ignored the interruption, his eyes narrowing just slightly. “You don’t think I can just let you walk out the door.”

I crossed my arms, keeping my glare steady. “So, what? You think locking me up makes you safer?”

Rafa’s smirk widened, but his eyes stayed sharp. “It does make me safer. And it makes you mine to watch. I don’t know who ordered the hit, or how far they’ll go, but there is one thing I know, keeping you here ties up several loose ends.”

I barked out a bitter laugh. “Loose ends? I’m not one of your business deals. I’m not some pawn you can shove around on a chessboard.”

He moved closer, until I could feel the heat of him radiating between us. His cologne curled around me, it smelled dark and rich, something I’d never admit I liked. His voice dropped.

“No, Avery. You’re not a pawn.” His gaze locked on mine, intense and unyielding. “You’re a threat and a temptation. And maybe the only one reckless enough to warn me instead of pulling the trigger. That makes you valuable. Which means…” His hand brushed my jaw lightly “…you stay where I can see you.”

My breath caught. Damn him.

“You can’t keep me here against my will.” The words came out weaker than I intended and my throat was suddenly dry.

Rafa’s smile softened into something more dangerous. “Oh, I think I can.”

I swatted his hand away and turned my back, mostly so he wouldn’t see the way my expression faltered. My chest was a mess of anger, confusion, and something I refused to name.

“This is insane,” I muttered. “I should’ve never…”

“Warned me?” Rafa supplied from behind me. “Yes, you shouldn’t have. But you did. And that tells me something about you, Avery. For all your sharp edges, you care more than you want to admit.”

I clenched my fists. “Don’t pretend you know me.”

“Oh, I admit I don’t know you but I plan on learning more about you and seeing what is underneath this tough persona and smart mouth,” he said softly.

Silence stretched it was thick and suffocating. I hated how my heart betrayed me, pounding in my chest and in my ears. He was right, I had warned him. I could’ve just done the job, taken the money, and walked away. But something about the idea of Rafa lying in a pool of his own blood had twisted my gut in ways I didn’t want to examine.

Finally, I turned to face him. “So what now? You keep me locked in this fancy room until you get bored? Until you kill me?”

Rafa chuckled, “Neither.” He stepped closer again, invading my space until his chest nearly brushed mine. His eyes burned, dark and unwavering. “You’ll move into the estate. My wing. My protection. My rules.”

My mouth fell open. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me.” His tone was calm like he was announcing the weather. “You’re too dangerous to let run free. And too interesting to let go. So you’ll stay here. With me.”

I laughed, harsh and disbelieving. “You’re insane if you think I’m just going to agree to that.”

“You don’t have a choice.”

The words hit harder than I expected. He did not shout, it was just delivered as fact. And the worst part? He was right. If I left, I’d have Rafa’s men on my heels. And maybe the mysterious client who’d wanted Rafa dead, too. Out there, I was exposed. In here… I was trapped, but at least alive.

I hated that logic. I hated that it made sense.

“You can’t keep me like some…some pet,” I hissed.

His lips curved into that infuriating smirk again.

“Pet? No, you are far more dangerous. Stay with me, killer. Fight me all you want, but deep down, you know this is where you belong.”

My heart slammed against my ribs, furious at me for even considering it. But I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. Because a piece of me wanted to stay.

And Rafa knew it.

  • The mafia and his hit man   EPILOGUE

TWO YEARS LATER Avery’s POV Two years had made our lives peaceful and beautiful. Our bar had become the locals’ favorite, with dim lighting, good music, and drinks. Rafa pretended he didn't enjoy crafting, even though he was annoyingly good at it. Kane managed the books silently, as usual. The other men, Matteo, Sera, Lucas, and Pablo now worked security and delivery. No one asked about or talked about the past anymore. Upstairs, our apartment smelled like coffee and Rafa’s cologne, and the stupid vanilla diffuser Rafa kept buying because “it makes the place smell civilized.” Tonight was special for us. We closed early, locked the doors, and went upstairs. The moonlight cast across the bedroom, illuminating the faint scar on Rafa’s jaw. The one I kissed every morning. He leaned against the dresser, arms crossed, watching me like I was the only thing worth seeing. “You’re late,” he murmured, though he still smirked. “I know,” I said. “I wanted to keep you waiting.”

  • The mafia and his hit man   CHAPTER SIXTY

Avery’s POVThe morning after Antonio’s death was the first time in a long while I actually woke up without bracing for impact. No alarms or panic just sunlight and Rafa’s arm draped across my waist, like he was worried I’d disappear if he loosened his grip. His breath was warm on the back of my neck. He was out cold. For a minute, I just watched him, saw the ease on his face I hardly ever noticed, watched the slow rise and fall of his chest, and observed how relaxed he was.He deserved mornings like this. Hell, he deserves mornings like this forever.I didn't even notice he was awake until he spoke. “Take a picture, it will last longer.”“You’re the one holding me hostage,” I murmured. His lips curved slightly. “Get used to it.”Yeah. I was already used to it.He pressed a slow kiss on my forehead before forcing himself upright. “We have things to talk about.”I sat up too, pulling the sheets to my waist. “Okay. So talk.”Rafa scrubbed a hand over his face before meeting my eyes. “An

  • The mafia and his hit man   CHAPTER FIFTY NINE

Avery’s POVThe world blurred into shadows as we left the island. The two of us slipped into a fisherman’s boat, the wind whipping in our faces.Rafa didn't touch me the entire ride. His silence was like calm before the storm. His jaw stayed locked the whole trip, eyes staring straight ahead, hands clenching and unclenching on his knees as if fighting the urge to destroy something.I kept throwing glances at him.I guess he finally had enough.“You’re staring.”“You’re thinking too loud,” I shot his own words back at him.“I'm trying to think.”I swallowed and faced forward, but the tension between us was thick enough to choke on.When the boat reached the mainland, we jumped straight into a cab, then two buses, then another shitty taxi with ripped seats. We didn't turn on the phones, and no unnecessary stops were made.We reached the safe house around dawn. My legs ached, and my nerves felt like exposed wire. The building was behind an abandoned mechanic shop on the outskirts of town

  • The mafia and his hit man   CHAPTER FIFTY EIGHT

Avery’s POV For a while, we walked without talking, the sun setting into a soft golden hue over the rooftops. The air smelled like citrus and sea salt. I could pretend this wasn't borrowed time. Rafa’s shoulder occasionally brushed mine, and every time it did, my heartbeat quickened. We stopped near a railing overlooking the harbor. Fishing boats rocked gently, water glittering like diamonds. Rafa leaned both arms on the railing and looked over the water, his sunglasses dangling from his fingers. He looked calm, more than I had ever seen him. “You’re thinking too loudly,” he said without looking at me. I scoffed. “How can someone think loudly? That doesn't make any sense.” “With you, it does.” I nudged him with my hips. He nudged back, harder, making me stumble. “Rafa!” He smirked. “Watch your balance, Ethan.” “Don't call me, Ethan,” I groaned. “It makes me sound like a middle-aged man.” He hummed, amused, and slipped his sunglasses back on. Then without warn

  • The mafia and his hit man   CHAPTER FIFTY SEVEN

Avery’s POVThe first problem with going off-grid was simple: I wasn't built for normal life. The second problem was that Rafa sure as hell wasn't either. And the third? People stared at us way too much, probably because we looked like two criminals trying hard and failing to blend in.Which… yeah, we were. The motel we ended up in for the night was off a lonely highway, the kind that rented rooms by the hour and had questionable stains on the walls. But it was far from the city, far from the families, and far from everyone who wanted us dead.Kane had left an hour earlier to meet the others at the safe house, which meant it was just the two of us alone in a tiny, overheated motel room with a buzzing AC unit and a single bed.Rafa dropped the bags on the mattress and pulled out two envelopes.“New identities.”He handed me one, and I opened it.“Seriously?” I groaned. “This is the worst fake name I’ve ever seen.”Rafa didn't look up from his own paperwork.“Ethan Hale is a perfectly f

  • The mafia and his hit man   CHAPTER FIFTY SIX

Avery’s POV The drive back to the estate felt longer than any mission I’d been on, maybe because there was nothing left to fight and no immediate threat. Just the slow, heavy realization that things wouldn't be the same anymore. My mind was still spinning. Everything was too overwhelming to process in one night. Kane kept his eyes straight on the road, unreadable expression, only glancing at the rearview mirror now and then as if he was quietly making sure neither Rafa nor I were about to break. Rafa drove silently, one hand gripping the wheel, the other tight around the gearshift like that was the only thing keeping him steady. He wasn't angry at me. But at everything else? Absolutely. Then Kane broke the silence. “Two SUVs followed us for six blocks. They peeled off after the highway split,” he said in a low, calm voice. Rafa nodded, still focused on the road. “Antonio’s men?” “Probably,” Kane replied. “They kept their distance, didn't try to engage. They were just watchi
