"Bugger," Liam said through gritted teeth, now worked up. "Don't give up looking."

Two men tired from the search, Ethan and Liam, met in the middle of the high street.

"Any on your side?" Liam was asking for public information.

"Not a bloody thing," Ethan snapped.

"Something's not right here. Someone's got to know something. There's more to this," Liam stated emphatically. "We need to cast a wider net."

Ethan nodded, his eyes thinning with determination. "We'll sweep the grounds, the area around. She shouldn't have gone far."

Liam still looked at Ethan then. "Do you think… do you think this has something to do with what happened before?"

Ethan's jaw locked tight. "I don't know. But I'm not going to take any chances."

Again the two groups turned their backs one upon the other and pushed off, going their separate ways into the night's cold. Ethan turned upon his heel to face the black grounds of the estate. Shame was heavy: he promised safety, yet, in his care, Ayla was gone.

It filled his body with the weight of ponderous responsibility; it flattens, as the weight on a sledgehammer's head. He had let himself be sidetracked, and it had put Ayla in danger. His fists would clench in resolution when he trudged forward to make provisions for his oversight.

Quiet hours slipped by almost without words, into infinity. The entire estate had been raked, inch by inch; however there was nothing, no evidence, no trail to follow. Ethan met Liam at the gates; both were, obviously, worn out from the search, both very obviously marked by worry.

"We're missing something," he spoke low. "There's no way they could've taken her without leaving some trace."

"Perhaps they-"

"Could have been inside help," Liam finished, his brain already running with it. "Someone who knew the estate well enough to be able to cover their tracks."

The darkening of Ethan's pupils at the thought made them even darker. "Then we need to know who and learn of it. And fast."

Liam nodded, thoughts racing at what Ethan just proposed. "We need to make an attempt to speak with the staff; maybe some of them saw something off."

Ethan nodded back. "Yeah, but we can't do this with lost time, Liam. The more we sit here, the further her distance becomes."

"I know," said Liam, which held in its texture much of determination. "We'll find her, Ethan. We have to."

Ethan shifted his gaze to Liam, now by determination sharing, their fate sealed together by this terrible moment. "Then let's keep moving."

They separated again, one urging his team on in the hope of more successful discovery. Time was wasting. Every second now that rolled on with Ayla out there meant a loss of life. Neither Ethan nor Liam would feel easy until she was found, no matter the cost.

"Let her go!" Liam shouted again. It was a command, sharp as a knife cut through butter, as Liam stepped out from behind the trees, his eyes never straying from the group of men that stood fatally close to where Ayla lay utterly still on the ground.

One of them; their leader, apparently, turned around, a smirk on his face. "Or what? You really think you can take us all on yourself?"

Liam looked down at him. "I don't think. I know. Now step away from her."

The man guffawed loudly—a cold, humorless sound that seemed to reverberate in the night. "You've got guts. I'll give you that. Guts aren't going to save you now.

"Arrogance won't either," Liam shot back. He flicked his eyes to Ayla, whose body lay limp to the ground, helpless. Every second counted; he had to get her away from there.

With a dismissive flick of his wrist to his men, the leader ordered, "Take him down."

Two of them jumped forward at Liam, whose strides were so long and casual in his confidence. One barged forward by throwing his heavy fist at Liam's head, where he quickly ducked and hit the man precisely on his ribs. With a mild groan from the man, hunching his back at the piercing feeling, Liam followed it up with a sharp knee to the face as he went to the ground sprawling.

The speed of his answer was so quick that it took the second man by surprise. And it was long enough. Before he even realized it, there was a vice-like grip on his arm, his hand wrenched painfully up behind his back, and Liam's fist came down on the back of his neck with bone-crunching force, and he was out cold.

"This's your final warning." He growled—voice lowered to a very dangerous murmur while his narrowed gaze remained fixed on the leader, "Walk away now, and you might live to regret this."

His sneer wavered a beat, then the leader was cool once more. "Big mistake," he muttered, flipping out a knife from way up its sheath in his belt and advancing on Liam with the confidence of one who'd done this one too many times before.

The leader lunged forward with his blade gleaming under the moonlight. But before he could strike him, Liam grasped his hand and twisted his wrist brutally. The knife fell away, and Liam hit the man in the jaw, sending him reeling backward.

Liam wasted no time; the knife was ejected with an instant kick. A second later, he bore down on the wide-eyed gape of a man in shock, who had been holding his jaw previously.

"Stay down," Liam ordered.

But the man wasn't finished; he charged at Liam again, but the lad sidestepped him once more. He caught the man in the side with another fierce body shot. The more heinous man crumpled to the ground on the side, letting out a gasp.

Liam stood over him with upreared fists, every muscle in his body coiled with tension. "I said, stay down.

He rumbled on, yet took no step forward, until at length it appeared as if he had decided himself a weakling.

Liam was convinced that the danger was over and that the threat had been taken care of. Only now did he revert his complete attention back to Ayla. He went over to her immediately, his heart thumping in his chest with his panic for her. "'Ayla, it's Liam. Can you hear me?" he said, trying to sound light even with his blood that seemed to rush like a river to his brain.

She didn't respond; her skin was cold, her breath shallow and rasping. In a flash, there was rekindling panic flashing through Liam. He had to get the hell out of this place, and quick.

"Ayla, I'm going to carry you," he murmured, gently bringing her up into his arms. So light, so fragile in his hold. "You did good. You're safe now. I've got you.".

He came away from the edge, taking one sharp step at a time; those piercing eyes constantly flicked left and right, looking out for any minute hint of further ambushes. He could never truly let his guard fall.

"Don't you worry, Ayla," Liam sighed, carrying her through the trees. "I'll have you out of this place; nothing will happen to you.".

Ayla's brow furrowed, her eyes scanning across the dimly lit hallway as she and Ethan stood in the middle of the elder council room of the Moon Shadow Pack surrounded by cold silence. Elders looked amongst themselves, faces impassive, eyes secretive behind the doors they vowed to never open."Someone has to know something about where they took the pups," Ayla insisted. One of the elders sighed and watched as Ethan looked away before setting his gaze once more on her. "We have our ways, Luna Ayla, but not all can be let out for outsiders to know."Ethan advanced another step, eyes leading in a firestorm of anger that was barely contained. "Outsiders?" he snapped. "This is about innocent lives, our pups. Withholding information puts you on the wrong side.”The elder fidgeted, his glance bobbing between them. "Our loyalty is to our own," he muttered.Ayla's jaw flexed. "And here I thought this pack had a sense of justice." Her gaze flashed sideward, a frustration-laced glance at Ethan.E

The morning sun oozed through the window of the hospital and cast soft rays across Ayla, who swung her legs off the side of the bed, lighting up her eyes with determination. Ethan stood by the door and raised an eyebrow at this determined look."You're really serious about this?" Ethan asked as he folded his arms across his chest.Ayla raised her eyes to his, no yielding. "I have to be, Ethan. Our pups… they're out there somewhere, and I just can't sit here waiting. I'm going to Moon Shadow Pack. With or without you."Ethan clamped his jaw tight, regarding her for one silent, telling moment. "Fine. But you're not going anywhere without me."Right on cue, Liam strode in. His gaze danced between them until it firmly fixed on Ayla. "You're not thinking of leaving without me, are you, Ayla?"Ayla looked away, her insides churning as the tension between the two men heightened. "Look, I'm not in the mood for arguments. I'm going to Moon Shadow to find answers, and I don't have time to waste

The night was thick and still, except for the soft rustling of leaves caused by the chilled breeze at midnight. Ethan and Liam lay in wait, cloaked, every nerve taut. Ethan had not once strayed his gaze away from the sequestered area where Sophia was supposed to meet her accomplice."You sure she'll show?" Liam whispered low the words barely audible.Ethan nodded, his features chipped from marble. "I heard her talking to someone, they are supposed to meet here. She's getting desperate. I think she's slipping under my radar. This is her last chance to try and cover her tracks."Liam's jaw clamped tight as he glanced sideways at the trees where they'd positioned themselves. "I still can't believe she had the nerve. To go after Ayla… it's sickening.""Trust me, I know," Ethan replied, gaze darkening. "But tonight, we end it.What felt like an eternity later, finally, footsteps could be heard in their direction. The figure emerged under the moon, taking the shape of Sophia, who looked abo

"Sophia, you're looking tense," Ethan said casually, leaning against the doorway, a well-placed, innocent smile on.She looked up, a flash of surprise crossing her face before it was replaced all at once. "Why wouldn't I be? There is so much going on, and not everyone can be as carefree as you, Ethan."Ethan smiled, but he didn't break his stare from hers. "Carefree? You make it out to sound like I am just here for a good time.""Then perhaps that is what you should be," Sophia shot back. "Can't you find something better to do?""Perhaps," Ethan shrugged, closing in further. "But I like my time here better. With you."She hauled a smile onto her face and turned away toward the door. This watching all the time was starting to smother her. "Right. Well, I'm busy. If you don't mind."Ethan didn't budge. "Busy doing what, exactly?”She spun back, her eyes narrowing. "Why are you always here, Ethan? What do you want from me, anyway?"Ethan's eyes slightly hardened, even while his tone rema

ANGER.Ethan stormed into their meeting point anger, his face set in a determined scowl.“Luca, what's going on?” Ethan demanded.“We've got a problem,” Luca said.Ethan's eyes widened. “What kind of problem?”Luca paused for a moment before speaking again. “The witness is dead.”Ethan's world seems to stop at that moment. “What?” Ethan's voice was barely audible.“Looks like the person behind this got to him.”Ethan was steaming in anger. “How did this happen?” Ethan screamed out of anger and frustration.Luca's expression turned serious. “Someone must have gotten a hint about him, that's why they went after him.”Ethan's eyes widened in surprise. “How is that possible?”“Am investigating, but ... .there's no evidence, no trace.”Ethan's face fell. “What do you mean?”“He was the only person who seemed to have witnessed what happened at the scene, now we have nothing.”Ethan's mind is shaken. ‘This can't be happening. All our efforts, down the drain. We need to look for another way,”

“I can't continue like this,I have to do something about this now. I can't sit here doing nothing; what if Ethan goes there and gets a clue as the one behind this attack? He's definitely going to kill me without thinking twice. I have to do something about this right now.”She immediately reaches for her phone. “I need to call this idiot because he caused this.if he had done a clean and good job for me as I have instructed, we won't be in this situation right now.”*Meet me at our usual location right now.*Sophia stormed out of her room, walking quietly out of the house making sure nobody saw her while leaving.Sophia's palms were sweaty as she walked down the lonely and deserted street at midnight just to meet the hitman.as she turned a figure emerged from the shadows.“You texted,” the hitman asked, his face covered with a black hoodie.“We need to talk.”Sophia spoke in haste and annoyance.“How do we fix this? I can't risk getting caught by Ethan, that I am the one behind the Ayl

Ethan slammed the phone shut and looked at the hospital doors in front of him, beyond which Ayla lay, fighting for her life. His fists clenched as his mind, set to come up with a resolve as solid as stone, said he was not going to let her down. He was going to find those pups, no matter what it took, then he was going to make their abductor pay dearly indeed.Still, with all of that, Ethan's mind was spinning into plan even as he waited for Luca. It was crazy, eccentric, and it would take him down to the very depths of the shadows of the world from which he himself had once tried to escape. But for Ayla, he'd do it. Whatever it takes. He only prayed he wouldn't be too late."Ethan, what in the name of all hell happened?" Luca's voice ripped through the hospital corridor, his features torn between concern and anger."It's a long story," came the low tones of his return, and with it, features turned grim, "but I'll give you the short of it—Ayla was kidnapped and she was found unconsciou

"We must get her to the hospital quickly. Her wolf is so very weak, and she is quickly losing her strength."A strong wave of shame coursed through Ethan's heart. This was his fault. He'd failed to serve her, and the pups as well. Now she had to pay for that."Ethan." The doctor snapped him out of the sleeve of thoughts he'd lost himself in. "We need to move. Now."Ethan nodded and then carefully took Ayla into his arms. "I will be driving.""No, Ethan, you have to be with her in the back. I'm driving," the doctor said, already moving out of the mansion.Nothing, Ethan said, climbing in back and sliding all the way across the seat to sit as close to the farthest corner as he could, trying to keep Ayla's head pressed into his chest and say soothing things that doubtless were lost in all the prattling noise the waterfall inside his heart was making. The drive to the hospital was interminable. Every pulsing moment deepened his fear.It came down to the drive to the hospital, speeding Ayl

Except, at the precise moment he thought they'd gotten everything back to normal, sharp pain hit him from behind his head. Everything around him started accelerating and his vision worsened. He was stumbling; by instinct, he held Ayla but he felt his strength flowing from him."What…?" Liam tried to twist, only to receive another hit, this time harder. His legs were rubber, and he fell, but he still held Ayla tight as best he could. The last thing he saw was an imposing shadowy figure standing above him before the world turned black. The cold, detached voice echoed in his ears as, indeed, darkness closed in around him, "You should have stayed down. Just like I said.Liam's blaming thoughts skittered away, tripping over each other trying to find the way back to her. He could make them safe right now, but he needed to hold on to the little light that trust put up. Somebody would come find them. Somebody would come help.He glanced back at him and at Ayla, the silhouette over them as Lia
