Except, at the precise moment he thought they'd gotten everything back to normal, sharp pain hit him from behind his head. Everything around him started accelerating and his vision worsened. He was stumbling; by instinct, he held Ayla but he felt his strength flowing from him.

"What…?" Liam tried to twist, only to receive another hit, this time harder. His legs were rubber, and he fell, but he still held Ayla tight as best he could.

The last thing he saw was an imposing shadowy figure standing above him before the world turned black. The cold, detached voice echoed in his ears as, indeed, darkness closed in around him, "You should have stayed down. Just like I said.

Liam's blaming thoughts skittered away, tripping over each other trying to find the way back to her. He could make them safe right now, but he needed to hold on to the little light that trust put up. Somebody would come find them. Somebody would come help.

He glanced back at him and at Ayla, the silhouette over them as Liam stirred. They both looked so disheveled that they were thankful no one would question them. They beckoned through to the others. "Settle them. We're taking them with us.".

Two of the others, who had risen after being randomly punched insensible by Liam, intervened; one lifted a limp Liam, and another lifted a weak Ayla, trying to be gentle with her, to not cause her any more damage.

"Get moving," he barked as he surveyed the place nervously, "we ain't got long, and someone could have heard that racket by now."

The party took their way right rapidly through the forest, at the head of which they led their prisoners. The night was dead, with a kind of dreadful stillness, as if the forest itself listened: very expectant—very breathless.

The men assigned to hack their way through the woods sent only a faint, dusty moonlight filtering through the swirling canopy above them as they advanced. There was an intense silence. That purposeful step seemed to be followed by delving footfalls, really heavy and deep steps toward the destined place.

He chanced a look over his shoulder at Liam and Ayla, his mouth curving up in a nastily smug sneer. "'Who's so tough now?" he said.

This self-satisfaction would, of course, soon flee. He knew they had to hurry; the more time they spent in one place, the more the chance someone was going to track them down. And if that happens, all their hard work will be futile.

They had managed to get deeper into the woods, the sounds of the night increasing. Among all the whirl of thoughts on what to do next, it was Leader's mind that whirred.

"We've got them, although this job is far from over, and we're far from being in the clear. We need to figure out the next step?" he muttered at last, low eyes narrowing.

Ethan's heart pounded with every step as he pushed his way through the woods toward the small, ramshackle cottage buried deep in the trees. The information he'd wrung free had brought him here, and all his instincts told him it was running out. He quickened his pace and reached the door, catching the faint acrid smell in the air. Something was off.

"Ayla!" he called, but there was no reply. He shoved open the door and went in, and for a moment he was plunged into darkness, before his eyes adjusted to the faint light that filtered through the cracked windows; streamers threw the room into eerie gloom. His eyes focused on Ayla, who lay, motionless, on the other side of the floor.

"Ayla!" he screamed again in fevered desperation. Another stride and he already knew what it was. The air almost inexplicably thickened with a kind of sickly sweet smell, like poison gas. The realization ripped through his thoughts with the shock of a hammer. He had to move fast.

Ethan kneeled beside Ayla, his shaking hands reaching out to check for her pulse. It was very weak, but she was living. He knew he couldn't afford to lose another second. He pulled his shirt up over his nose and mouth, trying to filter out the worst of the gas, and carefully heaved Ayla into his arms.

"I've got you," he gasped, more for his comfort than for hers. Ayla was totally limp, cold to the touch. Panic reared up in his mind, but he shoved it down, focusing on getting her out of there.

The gas seared Ethan's eyes, and oxygen seemed in short supply to his lungs as he inched backward through the cottage. The exit seemed to be farther and farther with each step he took, but Ethan didn't give up. He refused to be consumed by fear.

He finally pushed open the door and, coming out into the relatively fresh night air, hastened into motion, putting as much space between them and the cottage as he could before he let Ayla down to the ground. He was breathing too hard,in too many gasps, but he did not care. Ayla was all that mattered.

"Ayla, for God's sake, you've got to wake up," he pleaded with her, slapping lightly on her cheeks. "You're safe now, but you've got to wake up."

Since she didn't, Ethan bent over her with his ear only inches from her mouth, heaving a passionate listening for any sign of breathing. It was faint, almost imperceptible. He immediately began doing CPR, and his hands moved in practiced precision.

"Come on, Ayla," he muttered between breaths. "Don't give up. You're stronger than this."

After what felt like an eternity, Ayla finally coughed weakly and her chest rose with a shallow breath. Relief swept through Ethan as her eyes fluttered open slightly.

"Ethan?"

"I'm here," he soothed softly, as he brushed a lock of hair back from her face. "You're going to be okay. I've got you."

Even then, Ethan realized, it would not ever be safe enough; but at that moment, as he vowed to himself, holding Ayla as close as he could, never to let it happen to her again. He had meant that, and he would do everything in his power to keep her safe.

Ethan signaled to his team that he had found her. They all came running to where he was, but there was no sign of Liam.

“Where's Liam?” He asked one of the guards who was on Liam's team.

“We split up, so we could find her faster. But we haven't heard from him since then.” The guard responded.

“What if something bad had happened to him?” Ayla managed to say.

“Ayla, Don't worry about Liam, he's a strong guy, he can handle himself. He's going to be fine,” Ethan assured her.

Ethan instructed three guards to search around for Liam. He headed to the pack house carrying weak Ayla.

He got to the pack house and placed Ayla on his bed in his own bedroom.

He found out that she had gone unconscious again.

"Ayla, wake up! Please, wake up!" Ethan's voice was trembling as he gently shook her.

Ayla's eyelids flickered, but she was too weakened to react to it. Her body lay limp as Ethan felt her life force slipping out of her. Panic set in.

"Help! Somebody help us!" Ethan screamed.

Within minutes, the room filled with guards, maids, and last of all, the family doctor. They all moved closer to Ayla with their faces, riddled with concern and fear.

"What happened?" the doctor hurried to ask, sitting on the floor beside Ayla, reaching out his hand toward her wrist for her pulse.

"I don't… know," he replied hoarsely and huskily. "She was awake a few minutes ago. But now, she isn't breathing anymore."

Ayla's brow furrowed, her eyes scanning across the dimly lit hallway as she and Ethan stood in the middle of the elder council room of the Moon Shadow Pack surrounded by cold silence. Elders looked amongst themselves, faces impassive, eyes secretive behind the doors they vowed to never open."Someone has to know something about where they took the pups," Ayla insisted. One of the elders sighed and watched as Ethan looked away before setting his gaze once more on her. "We have our ways, Luna Ayla, but not all can be let out for outsiders to know."Ethan advanced another step, eyes leading in a firestorm of anger that was barely contained. "Outsiders?" he snapped. "This is about innocent lives, our pups. Withholding information puts you on the wrong side.”The elder fidgeted, his glance bobbing between them. "Our loyalty is to our own," he muttered.Ayla's jaw flexed. "And here I thought this pack had a sense of justice." Her gaze flashed sideward, a frustration-laced glance at Ethan.E

The morning sun oozed through the window of the hospital and cast soft rays across Ayla, who swung her legs off the side of the bed, lighting up her eyes with determination. Ethan stood by the door and raised an eyebrow at this determined look."You're really serious about this?" Ethan asked as he folded his arms across his chest.Ayla raised her eyes to his, no yielding. "I have to be, Ethan. Our pups… they're out there somewhere, and I just can't sit here waiting. I'm going to Moon Shadow Pack. With or without you."Ethan clamped his jaw tight, regarding her for one silent, telling moment. "Fine. But you're not going anywhere without me."Right on cue, Liam strode in. His gaze danced between them until it firmly fixed on Ayla. "You're not thinking of leaving without me, are you, Ayla?"Ayla looked away, her insides churning as the tension between the two men heightened. "Look, I'm not in the mood for arguments. I'm going to Moon Shadow to find answers, and I don't have time to waste

The night was thick and still, except for the soft rustling of leaves caused by the chilled breeze at midnight. Ethan and Liam lay in wait, cloaked, every nerve taut. Ethan had not once strayed his gaze away from the sequestered area where Sophia was supposed to meet her accomplice."You sure she'll show?" Liam whispered low the words barely audible.Ethan nodded, his features chipped from marble. "I heard her talking to someone, they are supposed to meet here. She's getting desperate. I think she's slipping under my radar. This is her last chance to try and cover her tracks."Liam's jaw clamped tight as he glanced sideways at the trees where they'd positioned themselves. "I still can't believe she had the nerve. To go after Ayla… it's sickening.""Trust me, I know," Ethan replied, gaze darkening. "But tonight, we end it.What felt like an eternity later, finally, footsteps could be heard in their direction. The figure emerged under the moon, taking the shape of Sophia, who looked abo

"Sophia, you're looking tense," Ethan said casually, leaning against the doorway, a well-placed, innocent smile on.She looked up, a flash of surprise crossing her face before it was replaced all at once. "Why wouldn't I be? There is so much going on, and not everyone can be as carefree as you, Ethan."Ethan smiled, but he didn't break his stare from hers. "Carefree? You make it out to sound like I am just here for a good time.""Then perhaps that is what you should be," Sophia shot back. "Can't you find something better to do?""Perhaps," Ethan shrugged, closing in further. "But I like my time here better. With you."She hauled a smile onto her face and turned away toward the door. This watching all the time was starting to smother her. "Right. Well, I'm busy. If you don't mind."Ethan didn't budge. "Busy doing what, exactly?”She spun back, her eyes narrowing. "Why are you always here, Ethan? What do you want from me, anyway?"Ethan's eyes slightly hardened, even while his tone rema

ANGER.Ethan stormed into their meeting point anger, his face set in a determined scowl.“Luca, what's going on?” Ethan demanded.“We've got a problem,” Luca said.Ethan's eyes widened. “What kind of problem?”Luca paused for a moment before speaking again. “The witness is dead.”Ethan's world seems to stop at that moment. “What?” Ethan's voice was barely audible.“Looks like the person behind this got to him.”Ethan was steaming in anger. “How did this happen?” Ethan screamed out of anger and frustration.Luca's expression turned serious. “Someone must have gotten a hint about him, that's why they went after him.”Ethan's eyes widened in surprise. “How is that possible?”“Am investigating, but ... .there's no evidence, no trace.”Ethan's face fell. “What do you mean?”“He was the only person who seemed to have witnessed what happened at the scene, now we have nothing.”Ethan's mind is shaken. ‘This can't be happening. “I can't continue like this,I have to do something about this now. I can't sit here doing nothing; what if Ethan goes there and gets a clue as the one behind this attack? He's definitely going to kill me without thinking twice. I have to do something about this right now.”She immediately reaches for her phone. “I need to call this idiot because he caused this.if he had done a clean and good job for me as I have instructed, we won't be in this situation right now.”*Meet me at our usual location right now.*Sophia stormed out of her room, walking quietly out of the house making sure nobody saw her while leaving.Sophia's palms were sweaty as she walked down the lonely and deserted street at midnight just to meet the hitman.as she turned a figure emerged from the shadows.“You texted,” the hitman asked, his face covered with a black hoodie.“We need to talk.”Sophia spoke in haste and annoyance.“How do we fix this? • The rejected luna stolen pups   Chapter 24

Ethan slammed the phone shut and looked at the hospital doors in front of him, beyond which Ayla lay, fighting for her life. His fists clenched as his mind, set to come up with a resolve as solid as stone, said he was not going to let her down. He was going to find those pups, no matter what it took, then he was going to make their abductor pay dearly indeed.Still, with all of that, Ethan's mind was spinning into plan even as he waited for Luca. It was crazy, eccentric, and it would take him down to the very depths of the shadows of the world from which he himself had once tried to escape. But for Ayla, he'd do it. Whatever it takes. He only prayed he wouldn't be too late."Ethan, what in the name of all hell happened?" Luca's voice ripped through the hospital corridor, his features torn between concern and anger."It's a long story," came the low tones of his return, and with it, features turned grim, "but I'll give you the short of it—Ayla was kidnapped and she was found unconsciou

"We must get her to the hospital quickly. Her wolf is so very weak, and she is quickly losing her strength."A strong wave of shame coursed through Ethan's heart. This was his fault. He'd failed to serve her, and the pups as well. Now she had to pay for that."Ethan." The doctor snapped him out of the sleeve of thoughts he'd lost himself in. "We need to move. Now."Ethan nodded and then carefully took Ayla into his arms. "I will be driving.""No, Ethan, you have to be with her in the back. I'm driving," the doctor said, already moving out of the mansion.Nothing, Ethan said, climbing in back and sliding all the way across the seat to sit as close to the farthest corner as he could, trying to keep Ayla's head pressed into his chest and say soothing things that doubtless were lost in all the prattling noise the waterfall inside his heart was making. The drive to the hospital was interminable. Every pulsing moment deepened his fear.It came down to the drive to the hospital, speeding Ayl
