Chapter 2

Penulis: Nine Nine
How desperate had I been?

To keep from being locked in the cellar again, I learned to give in. I learned to smile sweetly at that fleshy, intimidating face and do whatever it took to please them.

I even learned to compete with a dog for his favor, just to get a piece of moldy bread.

But I had never tried to compete with Nancy.

All I wanted was for Mom and Dad to tell me stories again and listen to me sing the songs I had just learned. I wanted to fall asleep to the sound of their voices, the way I had when I was little.

The bleeding had slowed. Maybe there wasn't much blood left. I was starting to lose consciousness, and I knew it would all be over soon.

Mom and Dad wouldn't have to worry about me competing with Nancy for their attention anymore. They wouldn't have to stay with me all the time, afraid I might get hurt.

They could spend all their time with Nancy. They could go out whenever they wanted instead of constantly taking time off work for my doctor appointments.

Nancy wouldn't have to keep such a close eye on my moods anymore.

And I wouldn't have to spend every night struggling to keep emotions I knew weren't normal under control, only to wake up the next morning and pretend I was just like everyone else.

I kicked myself for forgetting to open the window. Mom hated strange smells. Now she was definitely going to think I was being difficult again.

I smiled bitterly and looked up, only to catch sight of my deathly pale reflection in the window.

I looked terrifying. I couldn't let them see me like that.

My soul slipped out of my body, and I drifted outside until I spotted Dad walking down the street. He had Nancy in one arm and was holding Mom's hand with the other.

I followed them.

Nancy asked brightly, "Mom, Dad, are we going to get my favorite burgers and fried chicken?"

Mom gave her nose a playful pinch. "Yep. You were so good at the doctor's today, so you get a treat."

I watched the three of them walking ahead of me, and it finally hit me. I was the one who didn't belong.

My eyes burned, and I instinctively reached up to wipe at them. Then I froze.

How could a soul cry?

Mom cut Nancy's burger into smaller pieces, wrapped it back up, and handed it to her. Dad poured out the fries, dipped them in ketchup, and handed them to Nancy.

When Nancy got sauce on the corner of her mouth, Mom gently wiped it away.

It reminded me of when I was little. Whenever I got a shot without crying, Mom and Dad would take me out for burgers and pizza afterward.

Then I followed them to a photo booth. Even though I knew they couldn't see me, I still huddled in the corner, too afraid to move.

On the way home, they ran into one of our neighbors.

"The three of you out having fun again?"

"Hi, Ms. Lane. Mom and Dad took me out for burgers today," Nancy said sweetly.

"Aren't you a sweetheart? Jenny's a sweetheart too. I ran into her the other day, and she even said hi to me. She's so polite. You've got two wonderful daughters," Ms. Lane said warmly.

Mom forced a smile, gave Ms. Lane a quick nod, and kept walking. A tear slipped down her cheek.

"I wish Nancy were our only daughter. I wish I'd never had Jenny," she said softly to Dad.

I heard every word. My eyes started burning again, but I wasn't sad. I was happy.

Mom had gotten her wish.

Nancy wiped the tears from Mom's cheeks. "Don't cry, Mom. I'll always stay with you. I'll never make you sad. Come on, let's go home."

Dad stroked Nancy's hair, then took Mom's hand. "Okay. Let's go home."

My eyes burned so badly I could barely keep them open. I slowly let them close.

When I opened them again, everything was pitch-black. Then I heard the front door open, followed by Nancy's cheerful voice.

"Jenny, are you feeling better? I'm home!"

Ms. Lane suddenly spoke up. "Come to think of it, Nancy was the one who told me. I ran into her at the grocery store, and she said Jenny, who'd been trafficked, came back."The crowd began murmuring."That's right. She told me too. She even told me how badly Jenny had been abused.""She told me Jenny had a bad temper too and asked us to be patient with her.""Enough!" Mom shrieked, cutting everyone off.She scooped Nancy into her arms and kissed her cheek. "I believe Nancy. She's such a sweet, well-behaved child. She would never do anything to upset me. Come on, we're going home."With Nancy in her arms, Mom started making her way through the crowd.Dad called after them, his voice hoarse. "Wait! Nancy, you're a good girl, aren't you?"At last, Dad was talking to her. Nancy lifted her head from Mom's shoulder and looked at him eagerly. "Yes. I'm a very good girl."Dad gripped the hem of his shirt. "Good girls don't lie. So tell me, Nancy. Were you the one who left the razor bl

"Dad, you work so hard. I don't want to take dance lessons anymore. That way, you won't have to work so much overtime."Dad, your shoulder's hurting again. Here, take the money I saved from my allowance and go see a doctor."Dad, I don't need tutoring anymore. It costs too much. I can study on my own."Dad, I…"One memory after another came rushing back to Dad, all the times I had tried to make things easier for him growing up.A broken sound escaped him, somewhere between a laugh and a sob. Just hearing it made my chest ache."I was wrong. I shouldn't have yelled at you. I never should've said those awful things."He grabbed fistfuls of his hair and pulled hard. "You were never a burden. You're my daughter. You mean everything to me!"Overcome with grief, he started slamming his head against the wall again and again. Soon, there were small streaks of blood on the wall.I hovered beside him in a panic, reaching out to stop him. "I don't blame you, Dad! I don't blame you!"I s

"Jenny…"Mom whispered my name, but I couldn't answer. All I could do was watch her call my name again, pleading with me."Jenny…"I pressed myself against the cold wall as Mom began frantically scrubbing the dried blood from the floor."There's so much blood. It must have hurt so much. Don't be scared, Jenny. I'm right here."She tried to lift me, but my body kept slipping out of her grasp. In the end, all she could do was wrap her arms around me and gently brush the loose strands of hair from my face."Why are you crying, Mom? I'm dead now. Nancy is your only daughter, just like you wanted. So why are you crying?"Dad heard the commotion and rushed to the doorway. The moment he saw me, he started shaking. He pulled out his phone to call 911, but his hands were trembling so badly he couldn't even unlock it.Just then, Nancy came out of her room clutching her stuffed tiger. "Mom, Dad, what happened to Jenny?"Neither of them paid her any attention. They pushed her aside withou

I flailed my arms, trying to stop the man, only to realize I was reliving a memory.Everything around me was dark except for a sliver of light spilling from Mom and Dad's room. Like a moth drawn to a flame, I drifted toward it.Mom sat on the bed, looking exhausted.Dad finally asked, "Jenny still hasn't come out to eat?"Mom didn't answer. She just rubbed her left shoulder.Dad reached over and started massaging her shoulder. "Can she really go all day without eating? She's been through ten years of hell. I don't expect anything from her. All I want is for her to be safe and healthy for the rest of her life."Mom let out a long sigh and turned to him. "Jenny's my daughter. Of course I worry about her. But it's always one episode after another. How much more are we supposed to take?"Nancy even asked me today if we could go back to the way things used to be, when it was just the three of us."Mom sniffled. "Randy, we owe Nancy so much. We adopted her after we'd given up hope of

My stuffed tiger was worn and faded, with frayed fur and one eye missing. It looked nothing like the one Nancy carried around. In the bathroom, Nancy was playing with the bubbles in the tub."Mom, you and Dad have raised me since I was little, right?" she asked."We raised both of you—"Nancy cut her off. "No, you didn't! Jenny didn't come back until later. I'm your real daughter!"She slapped at the water, splashing it everywhere and spraying Mom right in the face. The moment she noticed the corners of Mom's mouth turn down, she got up and wrapped her arms around Mom's neck."I'm sorry, Mom. I was wrong. I'm just scared I'm going to lose you and Dad. Can things go back to the way they were? Just you, Dad, and me?"She reached up and touched Mom's cheek.Mom sat her back down in the tub and rinsed the bubbles off her."Okay, okay. I understand. Your dad and I have been so focused on Jenny lately that we haven't given you enough attention. Why don't the three of us go to the am

I passed straight through the wall.Dad closed the front door behind them while Mom led Nancy inside with burgers and fried chicken, both of which were favorites of mine too. Then Mom saw that the living room was still a complete mess. Her expression hardened, and she turned to Dad."Jenny's getting harder and harder to deal with. We miss one phone call, and now she can't even be bothered to clean up the house. Her temper just keeps getting worse."Depression, somatization, whatever. I think she's faking all of it! Randy, we can't keep coddling her like this. Tomorrow, we're making her go out and get a job!"Mom was still complaining when Nancy let go of her hand and ran to my room. She pressed up against the door and called softly, "Jenny, please don't be upset. I brought you a big burger!"When I didn't answer, Nancy turned around, looking hurt, tears clinging to her lashes. "Mom, why won't Jenny talk to me? Is she mad because you and Dad took me to the hospital? I'm sorry, Je
