Chapter 1

Penulis: Nine Nine
I stared at the razor blade in my hand and remembered what the doctor had told Mom and Dad.

"Jenny has severe depression. You need to keep anything sharp away from her."

My whole body was stiff as a board.

Maybe Mom and Dad had wanted me dead all along.

After everything I'd been through, I had become an embarrassment to them. They never knew when I might have another breakdown, so they were always on edge around me.

It was time to end it all.

I cut my wrist, then lay down in the storage room they'd hastily turned into a bedroom for me and waited to die. The silence terrified me. All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

Suddenly, I wanted to hear Mom and Dad's voices one last time.

When I was little, whenever they had to work late and I was home alone, they would call me. They would tell me stories, listen to me sing, and patiently keep me company.

My vision was growing blurry. I struggled to unlock the old phone my younger adopted sister, Nancy Bonner, had given me and dialed the number.

"Sorry, the person you're trying to reach is unavailable. Please try again later."

I tried again and again, but all I got was the same automated message.

Finally, I called Dad.

The moment he answered, I heard Mom soothing Nancy in the background. "It's okay, sweetheart. You'll feel better after your breathing treatment."

Nancy spoke to Mom in a sweet, clingy voice, and Mom answered her gently. Listening through the phone, it felt like their world and mine couldn't have been farther apart.

"Dad, I'm still scared of the dark. Can you tell me a sto—"

He cut me off, irritation already creeping into his voice. "The dark again? Isn't there a light in your room? Jenny, can you please be reasonable for once? Nancy is sick. She needs us right now.

"You're an adult. Do you really have to compete with her for our attention? Don't you have a light in your room? Do you have to keep putting your mom and me through this?"

A second later, the phone's disconnect tone filled the room.

Why was I so afraid of the dark?

For ten years after I was kidnapped, any time I talked back, they'd slap me around, throw me into the cellar, and lock me in. I cried and screamed. The cellar was pitch-black, and I couldn't see a thing.

They would deliberately let rats loose to gnaw at my toes. I tried to get away, but the space was so cramped I could barely turn around, let alone get away from them.

After that, whenever I was in the dark, my whole body would go numb, and I couldn't breathe.

When I finally came home, the doctor told me it was something called somatization.

Ms. Lane suddenly spoke up. "Come to think of it, Nancy was the one who told me. I ran into her at the grocery store, and she said Jenny, who'd been trafficked, came back."The crowd began murmuring."That's right. She told me too. She even told me how badly Jenny had been abused.""She told me Jenny had a bad temper too and asked us to be patient with her.""Enough!" Mom shrieked, cutting everyone off.She scooped Nancy into her arms and kissed her cheek. "I believe Nancy. She's such a sweet, well-behaved child. She would never do anything to upset me. Come on, we're going home."With Nancy in her arms, Mom started making her way through the crowd.Dad called after them, his voice hoarse. "Wait! Nancy, you're a good girl, aren't you?"At last, Dad was talking to her. Nancy lifted her head from Mom's shoulder and looked at him eagerly. "Yes. I'm a very good girl."Dad gripped the hem of his shirt. "Good girls don't lie. So tell me, Nancy. Were you the one who left the razor bl

"Dad, you work so hard. I don't want to take dance lessons anymore. That way, you won't have to work so much overtime."Dad, your shoulder's hurting again. Here, take the money I saved from my allowance and go see a doctor."Dad, I don't need tutoring anymore. It costs too much. I can study on my own."Dad, I…"One memory after another came rushing back to Dad, all the times I had tried to make things easier for him growing up.A broken sound escaped him, somewhere between a laugh and a sob. Just hearing it made my chest ache."I was wrong. I shouldn't have yelled at you. I never should've said those awful things."He grabbed fistfuls of his hair and pulled hard. "You were never a burden. You're my daughter. You mean everything to me!"Overcome with grief, he started slamming his head against the wall again and again. Soon, there were small streaks of blood on the wall.I hovered beside him in a panic, reaching out to stop him. "I don't blame you, Dad! I don't blame you!"I s

"Jenny…"Mom whispered my name, but I couldn't answer. All I could do was watch her call my name again, pleading with me."Jenny…"I pressed myself against the cold wall as Mom began frantically scrubbing the dried blood from the floor."There's so much blood. It must have hurt so much. Don't be scared, Jenny. I'm right here."She tried to lift me, but my body kept slipping out of her grasp. In the end, all she could do was wrap her arms around me and gently brush the loose strands of hair from my face."Why are you crying, Mom? I'm dead now. Nancy is your only daughter, just like you wanted. So why are you crying?"Dad heard the commotion and rushed to the doorway. The moment he saw me, he started shaking. He pulled out his phone to call 911, but his hands were trembling so badly he couldn't even unlock it.Just then, Nancy came out of her room clutching her stuffed tiger. "Mom, Dad, what happened to Jenny?"Neither of them paid her any attention. They pushed her aside withou

I flailed my arms, trying to stop the man, only to realize I was reliving a memory.Everything around me was dark except for a sliver of light spilling from Mom and Dad's room. Like a moth drawn to a flame, I drifted toward it.Mom sat on the bed, looking exhausted.Dad finally asked, "Jenny still hasn't come out to eat?"Mom didn't answer. She just rubbed her left shoulder.Dad reached over and started massaging her shoulder. "Can she really go all day without eating? She's been through ten years of hell. I don't expect anything from her. All I want is for her to be safe and healthy for the rest of her life."Mom let out a long sigh and turned to him. "Jenny's my daughter. Of course I worry about her. But it's always one episode after another. How much more are we supposed to take?"Nancy even asked me today if we could go back to the way things used to be, when it was just the three of us."Mom sniffled. "Randy, we owe Nancy so much. We adopted her after we'd given up hope of

My stuffed tiger was worn and faded, with frayed fur and one eye missing. It looked nothing like the one Nancy carried around. In the bathroom, Nancy was playing with the bubbles in the tub."Mom, you and Dad have raised me since I was little, right?" she asked."We raised both of you—"Nancy cut her off. "No, you didn't! Jenny didn't come back until later. I'm your real daughter!"She slapped at the water, splashing it everywhere and spraying Mom right in the face. The moment she noticed the corners of Mom's mouth turn down, she got up and wrapped her arms around Mom's neck."I'm sorry, Mom. I was wrong. I'm just scared I'm going to lose you and Dad. Can things go back to the way they were? Just you, Dad, and me?"She reached up and touched Mom's cheek.Mom sat her back down in the tub and rinsed the bubbles off her."Okay, okay. I understand. Your dad and I have been so focused on Jenny lately that we haven't given you enough attention. Why don't the three of us go to the am

I passed straight through the wall.Dad closed the front door behind them while Mom led Nancy inside with burgers and fried chicken, both of which were favorites of mine too. Then Mom saw that the living room was still a complete mess. Her expression hardened, and she turned to Dad."Jenny's getting harder and harder to deal with. We miss one phone call, and now she can't even be bothered to clean up the house. Her temper just keeps getting worse."Depression, somatization, whatever. I think she's faking all of it! Randy, we can't keep coddling her like this. Tomorrow, we're making her go out and get a job!"Mom was still complaining when Nancy let go of her hand and ran to my room. She pressed up against the door and called softly, "Jenny, please don't be upset. I brought you a big burger!"When I didn't answer, Nancy turned around, looking hurt, tears clinging to her lashes. "Mom, why won't Jenny talk to me? Is she mad because you and Dad took me to the hospital? I'm sorry, Je
