Chapter 27: Making Up

The argument erupted at dawn.

Lena had tried to hold it together—she really had. But after three days of planning, of preparing, of watching Kael and Caspian circle each other like wary predators, something inside her snapped.

"You're doing it again," she said, her voice sharp. "Both of you."

Kael looked up from the map he'd been studying. "Doing what?"

"Circling. Glaring. Acting like you're still enemies instead of—" She gestured vaguely. "Whatever you are now."

Caspian's jaw tightened. "We're not acting like anything."

"No? Then why have you barely spoken to each other in three days? Why does every conversation feel like a negotiation?" Lena's eyes blazed. "We're about to go to war. Together. And you two can't even look at each other without—"

"Without what?" Kael's voice rose. "Without remembering that he's a vampire? That his kind has been killing mine for centuries?"

"And wolves haven't killed vampires?" Caspian's red eyes flashed. "Let's not pretend your hands are clean, alpha."

"Stop it!" Lena stepped between them. "Just—stop. This is exactly what Lilith's followers want. Us divided. Fighting each other instead of them."

Kael's jaw worked. "I know what they want."

"Then act like it." Lena's voice softened. "Please. I can't do this alone. I need you both. *Together*."

---

The silence that followed was heavy.

Kael looked at Caspian—really looked, for the first time in days. The vampire stared back, his ancient face unreadable.

"She's right," Kael said finally. The words seemed to cost him something. "We've been... stupid."

Caspian's eyebrows rose. "Did you just admit fault?"

"Don't push it." But there was no heat in Kael's voice. "I'm trying here."

Lena watched them, hope flickering in her chest. "Both of you. Talk. Really talk. No posturing, no accusations. Just... talk."

Another long moment. Then Caspian spoke.

"I don't trust wolves." His voice was quiet, honest. "Three hundred years of watching them hunt my kind. Of being hunted by them. It's not something I can just forget."

Kael nodded slowly. "And I don't trust vampires. They've betrayed my pack more times than I can count. Killed my people. Took pleasure in it."

"So where does that leave us?" Caspian asked.

Kael was quiet for a moment. Then: "It leaves us with a choice. We can hold onto that hatred, let it poison everything we've built. Or we can let it go." He met Caspian's red eyes. "I'm choosing to let it go. For Lena. For us. For whatever this is."

Caspian stared at him for a long moment. Then, slowly, he nodded.

"I'll try." His voice was rough. "I can't promise it'll be easy. But I'll try."

---

Lena felt tears prick her eyes. "That's all I ask."

Kael crossed to her first, pulling her into his arms. "I'm sorry. For making you carry this alone."

"You're here now." She hugged him tight. "That's what matters."

Caspian joined them, his cool presence a comfort against her back. "We're both here. And we're not going anywhere."

They stood like that for a long moment, three bodies pressed together, three hearts beating in rhythm. The tension that had been building for days slowly dissolved.

"I love you," Lena whispered. "Both of you. Even when you're being impossible."

Kael laughed softly. "Especially then?"

"Especially then."

---

The rest of the day was different.

Kael and Caspian still circled each other—old habits died hard—but the hostility was gone. They talked, really talked, about strategy and tactics and what needed to be done. They disagreed, but respectfully. They compromised.

Lena watched them with wonder.

"How did you do that?" she asked Caspian quietly as they prepared the evening meal.

"Do what?"

"Get through to him. Get him to actually *listen*."

Caspian was quiet for a moment. "I didn't. You did. You reminded us what we're fighting for." He met her eyes. "That's your gift, Lena. Making people remember what matters."

She kissed him softly. "Or maybe you just needed a push."

"Maybe." He almost smiled. "But the push came from you."

---

That night, they celebrated.

Not with the pack—this was private, just the three of them. A simple meal by the fire, good food and better company. They talked and laughed and *breathed* in a way they hadn't in weeks.

"This is nice," Lena said, leaning back against Kael's chest. "Just... this. Us."

"It is." Caspian sat across from them, his red eyes soft. "I'd forgotten what peace felt like."

"Me too." Kael's arms tightened around Lena. "Me too."

The fire crackled. The cabin was warm. And for a moment, the world outside—with its threats and dangers and endless wars—simply didn't exist.

Then Lena shifted, and something in the air changed.

---

Kael felt it first—his wolf senses always sharpest. His golden eyes darkened as he looked at Lena, then at Caspian.

"She's beautiful," he murmured. "Isn't she?"

Caspian nodded slowly. "Always."

Lena's breath caught. The way they were looking at her—like she was the only thing in the universe worth seeing—made her pulse race.

"What are you two thinking?" she whispered.

Kael's lips found her neck. "That we nearly lost this. Nearly lost *you*. And we're never letting that happen again."

Caspian moved closer, his cool fingers tracing her jaw. "That we're done fighting. Done holding back. Done being anything other than yours."

Lena melted between them.

---

What followed was slow and deliberate and *perfect*.

Kael undressed her with reverent hands, kissing every inch of skin as it was revealed. Caspian followed close behind, his cool lips a counterpoint to Kael's warmth. Together, they mapped her body like explorers discovering a new world—which, in a way, they were. A world of trust. Of surrender. Of *love*.

When Kael laid her back on the furs and entered her, Lena gasped his name like a prayer. When Caspian took his turn, she clung to Kael and let the waves of pleasure wash over her. And when they moved together, finding a rhythm that somehow worked despite their differences, Lena understood that this—*this*—was what they'd been fighting for all along.

Not survival. Not victory. Not even peace.

*Connection*. *Love*. *Family*.

Afterward, they lay tangled together, breathing hard, hearts racing in unison.

"I love you," Kael whispered into her hair. "My mate. My heart. My *everything*."

"I love you too." Lena turned to Caspian. "Both of you. Forever."

Caspian's voice was thick with emotion. "Forever."

---

They woke tangled together as dawn broke.

Lena lay between them, Kael's arm draped across her waist, Caspian's hand resting on her hip. For a long moment, she simply existed in the warmth and peace of it.

Then Kael stirred.

"Morning," he murmured, his voice rough with sleep.

"Morning." She turned to kiss him softly. "Sleep well?"

"Best sleep in weeks." His golden eyes found Caspian over her shoulder. "You?"

Caspian's lips curved. "Surprisingly, yes."

Lena laughed. "Look at us. All civilized."

"Don't get used to it." But Kael was smiling. "We have a war to plan."

"I know." Lena sighed. "But can we have just a few more minutes? Pretend the world doesn't exist?"

Kael pulled her closer. "Always."

Caspian's hand tightened on her hip. "Always."

They lay there as the sun rose, three souls bound by love, stealing one last moment of peace before the storm.

---

A knock at the door shattered the stillness.

"Alpha!" A young wolf's voice, urgent. "Scouts have returned. They found the main camp. It's bigger than we thought. At least fifty fighters."

Kael was on his feet instantly, pulling on clothes. "Any sign of Lilith?"

"None. But they're flying her banner. They believe she's alive."

Lena and Caspian dressed quickly, exchanging glances.

"If Lilith's alive—" Lena started.

"We'll deal with her." Caspian's voice was calm. "Together."

Kael nodded. "Together."

They emerged from the cabin to find the camp already stirring. Wolves and vampires alike were preparing—sharpening weapons, checking armor, saying quiet goodbyes to loved ones.

Lena looked at her men. Her family. Her *heart*.

"Let's go," she said. "Let's end this."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
