Chapter 26: The First Fight

Three days had passed since Lilith's disappearance.

Three days of peace, of healing, of *hope*. The wolves who'd sided with Marcus had been dealt with—some exiled, some forgiven, all watched carefully. The pack was slowly mending. The vampire council had sent word that Marcus would face their justice. And for the first time in weeks, Lena could breathe.

But peace, she was learning, came with its own challenges.

"You're pushing yourself too hard." Kael's voice came from the doorway of their cabin. Lena sat at the small table, surrounded by maps and notes—planning, always planning.

"I'm being careful." She didn't look up. "There's a difference."

"Is there?" He crossed to her, gently closing the book she'd been reading. "You've been at this for hours. You need rest."

"I'll rest when I'm done."

"You'll rest now." His golden eyes held hers. "That's not a request."

Lena felt her temper flare. "You don't get to tell me what to do, Kael. I'm not one of your pack members."

"I'm not treating you like one." His voice stayed calm, frustratingly calm. "I'm treating you like my mate. Which means I care about your health. Your happiness. Your *well-being*."

"And I care about keeping us safe. Which means I need to plan. To prepare. To—"

"To obsess." Caspian appeared in the doorway, his red eyes thoughtful. "He's right, Lena. You've been running on empty for days. You need to stop."

Lena's jaw tightened. "Not you too."

"Us too." Kael pulled out a chair and sat across from her. "Both of us. Together. That's how this works, remember?"

She looked at them—her wolf, her vampire, her *partners*. And for a moment, the tension in her chest loosened.

"I just... I keep seeing it. Her face. The way she looked at me like I was nothing." Lena's voice dropped. "What if she comes back? What if next time, I'm not strong enough?"

"Then we'll be there." Caspian's voice was quiet but firm. "We'll always be there."

"And if you're not? If something happens to one of you?" Lena's eyes filled with tears. "I can't—I can't lose either of you. I just can't."

Kael reached across the table, taking her hands. "You won't."

"You don't know that."

"No. I don't." He squeezed gently. "But I know that worrying about it won't prevent it. Living in fear won't protect us. The only thing that will is staying together. Trusting each other. *Living*."

Lena looked at Caspian, who nodded slowly.

"He's right. We've faced Seraphine. We've faced Magnus. We've faced Lilith. And we're still here. All of us." His red eyes softened. "Because we have each other."

The tears spilled over. Lena pulled her hands free and stood, pacing. "I know you're right. I *know* it. But I can't just turn off the fear. I can't just—"

Caspian rose and caught her gently, pulling her into his arms. "No one's asking you to turn it off. We're asking you to share it. That's what we're here for."

Kael joined them, wrapping his arms around both. "We're a family, Lena. That means we carry the weight together. All of it. Even the fear."

She stood between them, held by them, *loved* by them. And slowly, the tightness in her chest began to ease.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I'm sorry I pushed you away."

"You didn't push." Kael kissed her hair. "You just... forgot to let us in. It happens."

"Don't let it happen too often." Caspian's lips curved. "We're very persistent."

Lena laughed—a wet, shaky sound. "I've noticed."

---

The tension broken, they spent the rest of the day simply *being* together.

They walked through the forest, Kael pointing out wolf trails and teaching Lena to read the signs left by his pack. They sat by the river, Caspian sharing stories of his centuries of solitude—not with sadness now, but with perspective. They ate together, talked together, *breathed* together.

By evening, Lena felt lighter than she had in weeks.

"Thank you," she said quietly as they sat on the cabin's small porch, watching the stars appear. "Both of you. For not giving up on me."

"Never." Kael's hand found hers. "That's not in our vocabulary."

Caspian's cool fingers intertwined with her other hand. "We're yours, Lena. For as long as you'll have us."

She looked at them—these two impossible men, so different and yet so perfectly matched. Her wolf. Her vampire. Her *family*.

"I love you," she whispered. "Both of you. Forever."

They answered not with words, but with kisses—Kael's warm and claiming, Caspian's cool and gentle. And as the stars wheeled overhead, Lena let herself believe, just for a moment, that everything might actually be okay.

---

Later, they moved inside.

The fire crackled in the hearth, casting dancing shadows across the walls. Lena lay between them, her body still humming from their earlier intimacy, her heart full to bursting.

"That was..." She trailed off, searching for words.

"Perfect." Kael's voice was drowsy, content. "That was perfect."

Caspian's hand traced lazy patterns on her stomach. "Agreed."

They lay in comfortable silence for a while. Then Lena spoke again.

"Do you ever think about the future? Like, really think about it?"

Kael propped himself on one elbow. "What kind of future?"

"I don't know. In a year. In ten years. In a hundred years." She looked at them. "What does forever look like to you?"

Kael was quiet for a moment. Then: "I see the pack. Growing. Thriving. I see you beside me, helping me lead. I see—" He paused, a strange expression crossing his face. "I see children. Our children. Running through the forest."

Lena's heart skipped. "Children?"

"Is that so strange?" His golden eyes were soft. "Wolves value family, Lena. Bloodlines. Legacy. Of course I've thought about it."

She turned to Caspian. "What about you?"

Caspian was quiet longer. Then: "I never allowed myself to think about the future. Three hundred years of solitude taught me not to hope." He met her eyes. "But now... now I see it too. A home. A family. *Us*. However that looks."

Lena felt tears prick her eyes again—happy ones, this time. "I didn't know I wanted that. A family. Children. I was always so focused on surviving, on fighting, on just... getting through."

"And now?" Kael asked.

"Now I want it. All of it. With both of you." She reached for their hands. "If that's possible. If we can figure out how."

"We will." Caspian's voice held quiet certainty. "We've figured out everything else."

They held each other in the firelight, dreaming of futures that suddenly seemed possible.

---

The next morning, reality crashed back in.

A young wolf arrived at dawn, breathless and pale. "Alpha. You need to come. There's been an attack."

Kael was on his feet instantly. "Who? Where?"

"A hunting party. Near the eastern border." The wolf's voice shook. "They're all dead. And there's a message. Carved into the trees."

Lena's blood ran cold. "What message?"

The wolf looked at her, fear in his eyes. "*The hybrid's blood will pay for Lilith. Tell her we're coming.*"

---

The hours that followed were chaos.

Kael organized search parties, sent scouts to track the killers, did everything an alpha should do. Caspian used his vampire connections to gather information, to watch for any sign of who might be behind this. Lena... Lena sat frozen, the words echoing in her head.

*The hybrid's blood will pay.*

"This is my fault," she whispered when they finally regrouped that evening. "They're targeting me. Those wolves died because of me."

"Don't." Kael's voice was sharp. "Don't do that. Don't take responsibility for the actions of murderers."

"They said my name, Kael. They—"

"They said your name to hurt you. To make you feel exactly what you're feeling now." He knelt before her, taking her face in his hands. "Guilt. Fear. Isolation. That's what they want. Don't give it to them."

Lena wanted to argue, but the words wouldn't come.

Caspian spoke quietly from the window. "He's right. This is psychological warfare. They're trying to break you before they even attack."

"Well, it's working." Lena's voice cracked. "I feel broken."

"Then let us help you put the pieces back together." Kael kissed her forehead. "That's what we're here for."

---

That night, they didn't sleep.

Instead, they talked—really talked. About fear. About guilt. About the weight of loving people who could be taken away at any moment. Kael shared stories of pack members he'd lost over the years, the grief he'd carried, the way he'd learned to honor them by living fully. Caspian spoke of centuries of emptiness, of the nothingness he'd felt before Lena, of how her love had filled a void he'd thought permanent.

By dawn, Lena felt different. Not healed—that would take time. But *held*. Supported. *Loved*.

"I don't know what I did to deserve you two," she admitted.

"You existed." Kael smiled. "That was enough."

Caspian's lips curved. "You loved us. That was everything."

They watched the sunrise together, three figures silhouetted against the gold and rose. Tomorrow, they would hunt the killers. Tomorrow, they would fight.

But today, they had each other.

And for now, that was enough.

---

A scout returned at midday.

"We found them," he reported. "A camp, about two hours east. Maybe twenty of them. Well-armed. Organized."

Kael nodded grimly. "Any idea who they are?"

"Lilith's loyalists." The scout's voice was tight. "They're flying her banner."

Lena's heart lurched. "She's alive?"

"We don't know. But her followers believe she is. They're gathering for a war."

Silence fell over the group.

Then Kael spoke, his voice steady. "Then we give them one."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
