Chapter 2

作者: Lance Summer
"Nothing," I said softly. "I'm just not feeling well."

Raphael's expression relaxed slightly, but he still looked a little annoyed. "Helena went out of her way to get you this breakfast. Aren't you feeling unwell because you've been eating irregularly?

"Don't be so picky. Just eat it. Don't waste food."

Listening to his feigned concern, I found the whole thing ridiculous.

Where had he been when I'd felt sick from skipping breakfast in the past?

"I know you're still upset about yesterday." Raphael frowned slightly. "But you really went too far this time. Apologize to Helena later, and we'll put this behind us."

I looked quietly at his face. "Was that everything you wanted to say to me?"

Raphael raised an eyebrow as if he'd just recalled something. "After graduating, we're going to have our mate bond ceremony. You'll become my mate. You know that, don't you?"

He stepped closer and hesitated briefly before continuing. "That's why I want you to give up your application for the headmaster's scholarship this time and let Helena have it.

"Besides, I can afford to support you. You don't need all these honors."

He ruffled my hair and smiled, but I felt a chill run down my spine.

"I won't agree," I said.

Raphael's smile vanished. He frowned deeply and reached for my arm. "Martha, explain yourself. What do you mean, you won't agree?"

Before he could say anything else, someone walked over and stepped between us to shield me from him.

It was Silas. "What's all the arguing about?"

He looked like he'd just woken up and cast me a suspicious glance. "Are you throwing another tantrum?"

I opened my mouth before wearily closing it again. 'Forget it. This isn't the first time.'

No matter how I explained myself, every problem and every conflict somehow ended up being my fault.

I took a step back to put some distance between us. "I'm not."

Silas sighed and looked thoroughly exasperated. "Martha, why do you hold such a deep grudge against Helena? She cares about you. Although she cried for ages because of what happened yesterday, she still asked us to bring you breakfast.

"You're her older sister. Can't you stop keeping score over every little thing? You've already taken first place away from her in the competition. Just let her have the scholarship. Stop being so stubborn."

I looked at my brother's familiar face and felt as if I were looking at a stranger.

"We competed fairly." My voice was soft. "Helena lost to me. That wasn't my fault."

Silas's expression darkened. "Martha! What has gotten into you? When did you become like this? Helena has always been in poor health.

"Just being able to participate in the competition was already a struggle for her. You're her older sister. Can't you just let her have this one thing?"

I stared into Silas' eyes.

We shared the same bloodline and a bond that had connected us from the moment we were born.

Yet now, all I could see in the eyes of my own brother was concern for our stepsister and disgust toward me.

"Silas." My voice trembled as I called out his name.

He froze before softening his tone. "Fine. I admit I was a little harsh. Anyway, once you graduate, you'll become Raphael's mate.

"His family is wealthy enough to ensure you'll never have to worry about food or clothing. Why do you need to work so hard?

"Just let Helena have the scholarship this time, and we'll put the whole thing behind us."

I shook my head gently. "No. I just want to ask you something."

I looked at him and spoke each word deliberately. "I was sick all the time when I was little. The healer said I might not live past sixteen.

"Back then, you always encouraged me. You told me I was smart and that I'd win lots and lots of awards and become someone extraordinary.

"You told me to keep winning, just as I'd overcome every illness that tried to defeat me.

"Do you still remember any of that?"

Silas's expression stiffened.

Raphael stood frozen beside him.

I smiled bitterly.

They didn't remember.

They didn't remember that my health had always been fragile, or that they'd once encouraged me to keep fighting and winning.

All they remembered was that I was the older sister and should always give way to Helena.

Now, Helena was the only person who mattered in their world.

I was nothing more than someone they could live without.

"Fine," I spoke softly while fighting back tears. "I'll let Helena have the scholarship."

I turned around and walked away without looking back.

My steps grew faster. It wasn't until I reached the end of the path that I finally leaned against a tree and sank to the ground.

'It's okay,' I told myself.

I'd be leaving in just a few days anyway.

It wasn't only the scholarship. I'd be leaving Silas and Raphael too. Helena could have them both to herself.

I didn't want a brother or a boyfriend like them anymore.

I opened my chat with Betty Decker, my mentor at the Royal Werewolf Academy. She replied with obvious delight.

[That's wonderful, Martha! You're an excellent student, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what you can do.]

[But once you've made your decision, you can't change your mind.]

[You'll have to leave your pack, and that means you may miss out on a lot of time with your family.]

I replied without hesitation.

[I'm sure, Ms. Decker.]

I stood up. I felt lighter than I had in a long time.

In just one more week, I'd be able to leave this pack behind.

I'd be heading toward a better future, one where there was actually a place for me.

My phone suddenly vibrated. Raphael had sent me a message.

[Martha, what happened today was my fault.]

[I promised to make up for your birthday, so I made a dinner reservation at your favorite restaurant for five days from now.]

Before I could reply, he sent a few more messages.

[I reserved a private dining room. Let's sit down and have a proper conversation then.]

[See you at seven o'clock in five days. Don't be late.]

I stared at the messages for a few seconds before calmly replying.

[Okay.]

I'd wanted to try that restaurant for a long time, but he'd always been too busy to take me.

Since this would be our last meal together, I might as well let him make up for one last disappointment.

Raphael didn't leave as I'd expected him to.After that day, whenever I appeared in a public area on campus, he'd follow me around.A whole month passed, and even my classmates started asking who the man was who kept stalking me.I ignored him, and he never approached me to start a conversation. However, I often received gifts from unknown senders.Sometimes it was a pretty cake. Sometimes it was a warm latte. Other times, it was an umbrella that came just when I needed one.I never accepted any of them. I simply threw them straight into the trash. Then one day, I spent the entire day working in Betty's lab.Evan worked under the same mentor as I did. He was eager to learn and was always finding opportunities to ask me questions."Martha, are you sure it's okay for that strange man to be following you around?"He suddenly asked me about it.I paused before waving dismissively. "It's fine. He'll disappear soon enough."Evan nodded and said in a serious tone, "Just let me kno

I stopped walking and looked at Raphael coldly like he was a complete stranger. "What do you want?"Raphael's eyelashes fluttered slightly. With a shaking hand, he reached inside his coat and pulled something out.It was the necklace he'd designed himself."I got it back." Raphael held it out to me and spoke in a gentle voice."So what?" I raised an eyebrow. "Didn't you already give it to Helena? Why are you bringing it to me now?"Raphael cautiously stepped closer. "Martha, I'm sorry. I ignored your feelings in the past and kept putting you through pain and disappointment."I promised I'd give you this necklace, but I broke that promise. Now I've gotten it back. Will you please forgive me?"I lowered my gaze to the soaked necklace and felt nothing. It once shone brilliantly in my eyes.It had been a gift from the man I loved. But now, it was nothing more than an ordinary necklace."Don't bother." I stepped back. I didn't even want to look at it again. "I don't want a neckl

"That's impossible." Silas shook his head desperately. "She's my biological sister. How could she make such a big decision to leave the pack without discussing it with me?"He immediately retrieved his phone and called our mother. As soon as she answered, she spoke before he could get a word in. "Silas, did you make your sister upset again?"Silas paused. "Mom, did you know Martha was transferring to another academy?"Mom snorted. "Of course I did. She told me two weeks ago. She said she wasn't happy here and wanted to study somewhere else."Tell me, did you, as her older brother, go see her off when she left?""I didn't," Silas admitted softly. He hadn't even known I was leaving. How could he possibly have gone to see me off?"That's enough. Martha called me to say she's doing well out there and told us not to worry. You should stop bothering her too," Mom said. The call ended.Silas stood frozen in place. It turned out everyone had known I was leaving except the two of the

Meanwhile, Raphael was sitting in the restaurant waiting for me with his brows furrowed."What's this supposed to mean?"He stared at the notification that had appeared on his screen. His expression darkened instantly."She blocked me."Raphael gripped his phone so tightly that his knuckles turned pale.Silas was cutting Helena's steak when he heard that. His knife and fork stopped midair. "What did you say?"He retrieved his phone, opened our chat, and sent me a question mark. But it hadn't been delivered."This girl is getting bolder by the day." Silas sneered. "Maybe it's good to let her stew for a while. She's bold enough to block her own brother's number and send us a picture of an airport. Who does she think she's fooling?"Raphael said nothing. He stared at the photo, and an uneasy feeling crept into his chest. When he saw how pale Helena looked, he suppressed his concerns.Helena pressed her fingers together. It looked like she was about to cry. "Is Martha still angr

Before leaving, I'd thrown away almost everything in my dorm. The bracelets and stuffed animals Raphael had casually given me lately were nowhere near as exquisite as the necklace he'd given Helena. The snacks Silas had given me were leftovers he couldn't finish and gifts from classmates who had crushes on him. Before Helena came along, they'd given me plenty of precious gifts too.Unfortunately, I didn't need any of them anymore.I took only my own diary, which contained numerous old photographs documenting every award I'd ever won.Clara hugged me tightly and cried for a while before helping me finish packing. "Are you really not going to tell them?""They wouldn't care." I shook my head. "I bet they're still fussing over Helena right now."Clara sighed. "Martha, pull yourself together when you get to your new place. Stop making yourself miserable over people who don't deserve you."I smiled. "Don't worry. From now on, I'm living for myself."When I walked out of the dorm b

Five days later, I arrived at the restaurant right on time.Following the directions Raphael had given me, I found the private dining room and pushed open the door. The room was decorated romantically. It looked almost like a small wedding venue.Helena was sitting between Raphael and Silas. She had on an extravagant gown and a tiara on her head.Surrounded by countless flowers, she looked like a princess.I froze. The moment Helena saw me, she lifted her skirt slightly and hurried over. "Martha! I've been waiting for you for so long. We were worried you wouldn't come."I avoided her outstretched hand and looked at Raphael. "What is this supposed to mean?"Raphael walked over and shielded Helena behind him. "Don't be so harsh with her. I can explain."Silas came over too. He looked impatient. "Are you even her older sister? It's her birthday today. Did you forget?"I ignored him.Raphael avoided my gaze. "Since it's Helena's birthday, I thought the two of you could celebrate
