MasukFrightening but Charming
Seraphine’s POV
“Don’t ever let him see you.”
Those words sent a chill down my spine. The head maid’s voice? Sharp enough to shave your soul. She looked at me with those eyes that could cut glass, like she already saw my fear leaking out.
“If the Alpha finds you in his chamber,” she leaned in real close, her breath all coffee and something sharper, “You won’t walk out alive. Got it?”
I nodded, probably looking like I was about to hurl. “Yes, Head Maid.”
She just sneered.
“The last girl who thought she could handle this…” Her lips twisted into something ugly. “…she ended up in pieces in the square. Dogs ate her bones. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
My heart skipped a beat, and my palms got all sweaty and I almost dropped my broom. “So why me?”
The other maids started giggling, pretending to fold sheets or whatever, but really, they were watching me crash and burn. Nobody wanted this job.
The head maid straightened up, fixing her scar. “Why you? Because everyone else is too chicken to step foot in his room after last time. You were easy to shove up front. Disposable.”
Laughter rippled behind me. The kind that feels like nails. My chest went tight. So that was it. It didn’t matter how hard I tried to fit in. They had just been waiting to toss me into danger.
The head maid snapped her fingers at me. “Dawn. He’s gone training by then. You get one hour. Don’t push your luck, Omega.”
I ducked my head, chewing back a shiver. “Yes, Head Maid.”
The next morning, the sun had barely come up. There I was, standing in front of the Alpha’s door. My heart was beating faster than usual, and I gripped my bucket so hard it hurt my fingers.
The door was a massive gold. It has wolves carving that seemed to be sneering at me.
Don’t let him see you…
I pushed the door open with hands that wouldn’t stop shaking.
The room? Couldn’t even call it a room. It was more like a lair.
Black velvet curtains everywhere, swallowing up the light. Weapons lined the walls, blades catching whatever little sun managed to sneak in. There were furs on the floor, wolves, maybe bears, maybe… honestly, I didn’t want to know.
And the bed.
A monstrous thing.
Dark oak, carved with moons and weird symbols, almost humming with something that prickled my skin. Black sheets, softer than sin, spilling everywhere. And the smell of cedar, smoke, and something wilder, something that made me dizzy.
I had to force my body to get moving.
Dust the shelves. Wipe the tables. Don’t even look at the bed or you’ll get swallowed whole.
I finished in record time, heart doing somersaults, and slipped out before the sun could rat me out.
Still breathing.
Still alive.
For a while, that was my only lifeline. Sneak in, scrub, sneak out, and pray I didn’t run into the Alpha. I got so good at it, I could’ve cleaned the place blindfolded. Every time I left, my knees almost buckled from relief.
But fate isn’t exactly known for playing fair.
It went sideways on a night when I was already running on fumes.
I was filling in for a maid who was sick. The head maid had told me to fill in for her. I had just finished with the library section when another maid bumped into the shelves and the books fell down. I had wanted to scream at her but she beat me to it.
“Why can't you seem to do things right?” she said.
I felt like I was dreaming. Was this lady talking to me like this instead of apologizing?
“Excuse me? Aren't you supposed to be apologizing?” I asked, raising my brow.
She scoffed, leaving me shocked.
How brazen.
“Was this the attitude you give your parents at home? It's no wonder they ended up selling you to the palace? How pathetic,” she sneered.
“The last time I checked, you were also sold by your parents,” I said, not wanting to admit how much it hurt recalling that ugly memory.
“At least I knew I was being sold. Unlike someone who thought she was getting married to the Alpha's, how crazy can you be?” she questioned.
As much as I didn't want to admit, I knew she was telling the truth. How stupid could I have been? To think I was going to get married to the Alpha?
“Well, my parents had a valid reason to do what they did,” I defended.
“I guess your family must have been really greedy that they were willing to sell their daughter,” she spat out.
I felt my blood boil.
“Don't talk about my family like that,” I warned.
She stepped forward to meet my eye level.
“Or what?” She asked.
Without realizing it, I raised my hands and slipped her.
Just as my hand landed on her face, I was met with the whip of the head maid.
Apparently, she just happened to come in when I was slapping her. Good timing.
I whimpered.
“How dare you raise your hand on someone else, you lowly omega?” The head maid spat out.
“She started it,” I defended.
The head maid didn't even wait to hear anything else. My back still ached from the beating. The head maid had me scrubbing floors till dawn, arms burning, and blisters everywhere. By the time I walked into the Alpha’s room, I was barely awake.
My hands shook on the shelves. Dropped the rag. Twice. My head spun.
Just the bed left. One more thing.
I started smoothing the sheets, and man, the velvet was so soft. My knees just gave out. Ne
xt thing I knew, I was lying on that massive bed.
Sleep dragged me under before I even had a chance to panic.
Seraphine's pov. When I opened my eyes, the room I found myself in was not something I recognized. The room was sparsely decorated and had just a king-sized bed, a wardrobe in the corner, and a little door that probably led to the bathroom. My mother came into the room, her face full of aggression as she grabbed my collar tightly, choking me. "I told you to obey the Alpha and everyone around you. Now look at what you've done. Everyone hates me in the pack," she spat out venomously."Mother, I try to do everything they both want, but that makes me fall into trouble with the other," I replied, tears pouring down mfacece."That's because you are a good-for-nothing trash. You always tend to get into trouble. I curse the day I gave birth to you," she yelled, pushing me against the wall. The impact made me scream and I opened my eyes again.Dang!!! That dream felt real.Maybe too real.I felt the pain still hammering in my head and my body on fire. What was going on? Why was I in pain?T
Seraphine's pov.I felt the blood in my veins run dry as he spoke. I stood frozen, wanting the ground to open and probably swallow me. I slowly started turning around but his palm held me roughly in place. "Don't move till I say so," he commanded, his voice icy cold. "I'm sorry your highness. I lost track of time and must have eaten slowly," I defended, trying to weave my way out of this mess I had created. "Follow me," he said, letting go of my shoulder and turning around. I swiftly followed behind him as we walked out of the room. We walked through the courtyard as a few maids, just rounding up their daily jobs, stared at me curiously. Some had sympathy in their eyes while others stared at me with hatred, smirking and probably thinking I deserved this. We arrived shortly at the palace dungeon and stopped just in front of a cell. Was he going to throw me in a dungeon? Just because I came back late to the room? I wasn't even useful to him. Why was he throwing me in a dungeon? Is
Seraphine's pov."Tell me," I answered, swallowing."Because you are just a slave to him. You are not special," she hissed and continued sweeping."I actually have to go now," I said, staring at the sky. It was evening and I had to eat. I hadn't eaten through today and my stomach was grumbling. "Yeah, go. Make sure to be really careful around him," she said, her voice weird. She looked like someone around my age, but slightly older. There was no way she would know all these things. "What's your name? The next time I am permitted to come out, I might as well come see you... If I'm alive," I probed, smiling. "Anaya," she said, now ignoring me like she had first done, and continued sweeping.I walked briskly toward the kitchen. The first person I saw was the head maid. She stared at me like I was the most disgusting thing she had ever come across. I stared at her neck and realized she had removed the necklace. Why bother with saving the pack? I was alone and probably would die soon.
Seraphine's pov. I turned my head toward the direction of the bedroom s Alpha Agora left me and dashed. I heard a little of what was said, but by the time I had put on my garment and walked into the room, there was no one there, aside from a tray of food scattered on the floor. I looked at Agora and had a feeling in the pit of my stomach. Just as I had guessed, he smirked and stared daggers at me. "Pick it up with your bare hands and dispose of it in the palace incinerator. I think I've let you become too comfortable," he said without any emotion in his voice.I obediently bent down to pick up the glasses, careful not to cut myself. "After that, go to the kitchen and eat with the other maids. We want them to know you're still alive," he said, as if teasing me or warning me. I didn't respond. What was I supposed to say? Thank you, Alpha, for allowing me to go outside and see the outside world, where I'll probably be bullied more than I am here. "And make sure to be back here bef
Agora's pov. Leaving her in that bed alone was the only self-control I had for myself. How I managed not to fuck her brains out still baffles me. Yes, I don't find her attractive but seeing her in pain ignites something in me that I didn't want to name. I entered the maids' quarters to inspect their work. I do that once a month where I go and check out how all the maids have been doing in the palace. Anyone found lacking in any area is to be whipped by the guard and put under supervision till she comes back to her senses. As I approached the kitchen staff, I spotted Lady Verya lurking behind the counters, a maid by her side. I walked up to her, flashing her a cruel smile. She bowed to me as I walked up to her. "Your graciousness," she said, smiling. I nodded. "Have you given food to the measly slave who is stuck in my chambers?" I asked, my voice void of any emotion. "I was just about to give her food before I heard you were coming here," she replied, her voice laced with
Seraphine's pov I got up from the bed, my legs shaking like jelly as I grabbed the blanket draped over my body. I turned on the heater and went back to bed. I picked up my garment and stared at the wetness dripping from my legs. I felt a tear clouding my vision and I sniffed. I felt like someone had made me a doormat and I was being stepped on without any mercy. I walked back into the bathroom and sat in the bathtub, letting the warm water soothe the sore in my vagina. I let the tears flow freely now. Was this how I am supposed to be living in the palace? Was this my fate? I didn't sign up for any of this. Just then, I heard a knock on the door and flinched. I stood up immediately and put on my garment as it clung to my wet body. I didn't feel a need to be ashamed as the Alpha felt disgusted with my body. I walked to the door as the second knock responded. "Who's there?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. I got no response, but a note slipped into the crack under the do
