Homewrecker

Everyone said I was the most generous man alive. When my CEO wife brought her brother-in-law and his son through the door, he stood there with bloodshot eyes. "Emmett's mother is gone. Could I borrow Colette for a few days to be his mom? He cries every night. It's breaking my heart." Without a word, I went to the bedroom and packed Colette Harmon's things for her. "We're family. You don't have to ask." At my son's birthday party, Emmett Pryce wanted to go to the amusement park and told everyone he did not want to share his new mom. My son immediately turned to the guests and apologized, saying, "Ms. Harmon has an urgent matter to attend to. We'll have to wrap up today's party here. Thank you all for coming." Everyone praised us, father and son, for being so gracious about it. Only I knew what had really happened. My son and I had been reborn. In our previous life, Colette had favored her widowed brother-in-law, Stefan Pryce, just the same. I had swallowed every last bit of it. When my patience finally ran out, I forced the divorce. Not long after, my son developed a heart condition and needed an artificial heart. The medical bills were staggering, so I had nowhere else to turn but Colette. However, she laughed in my face and threw me out into the blizzard. "You'll never be half the man Stefan is. Give it up." My son's heart stopped in my arms. Now that we had been reborn, I willingly let these things slide. All I wanted was for my son to live.

Chapter 1
I had returned to the night my wife brought Stefan Pryce and his son through the door. The boy hid behind Colette Harmon, tugging at the hem of her shirt. "The school's doing a parents' day, and I need a mom. Dad says I'm just a kid with no mom."I got up without a word and went to the closet to pack a suitcase. "Have the driver take you. I already put outfits together."On our wedding anniversary, Emmett Pryce spiked a sudden fever. Colette rushed out in the middle of dinner while our son was holding up his cake, ready to blow out the candles.I steadied his trembling hands. "Your mom had to go. I'll make a wish with you."The guests praised my generosity and called me a model husband. No one saw the bruises on my son's palms from pressing them against the table. After the party cleared out, I crouched down to straighten Felix Cavell's crooked bow tie. He tilted his face up, calm in a way no child his age should have been. "Dad, Mom can't be with us again today, can she?"I lo

Chapter 2
I took a deep breath, forced down the sting behind my eyes, and called Colette again. She picked up quickly this time. In the background, Emmett was shrieking with excitement. "Colette! Look how high I'm going!"I squeezed the phone until my nails bit into my palm. "Colette, I was out of line earlier. Emmett's not feeling well, so take him to the hospital first. I can handle the heart thing on my own."She hesitated, clearly caught off guard. "Reid, you...""Go. Don't keep Stefan waiting. He's got enough on his plate, raising a kid alone."I hung up before she could answer.Felix looked up at me. "Dad, are we not going to the hospital?"I crouched down and wiped the tear tracks from his face. "We are. We just need to wait for the right moment."I knew Colette better than anyone. Pushing her only made her push back harder. In my last life, I was too stubborn, and all it did was drive her further away. This time, I would play it her way and let her hand me the knife herself.S

Chapter 3
The next few days passed without incident.Colette came home every evening. She even brought Felix a gift, which was a first. It was a remote-controlled car. She ruffled his hair. "I've been busy with work. You understand, right?"Felix nodded like the good boy he was, then turned around and stuffed the car into the storage bin the moment she left the room.He whispered to me, "Dad, that car is the one Emmett got bored of. I've seen it before."I rubbed his head and said nothing. On Friday afternoon, I went to pick Felix up from kindergarten and noticed his teacher watching me with a strange look on her face.Emmett was in the middle of a crowd of kids, yelling at the top of his lungs, "My uncle is so mean! Colette said she's gonna find my cousin a new dad and get rid of my uncle!"Felix stood in the corner, his face flushed scarlet and fists clenched at his sides. He charged forward. "That's not true! My dad didn't do anything!"Emmett shoved him. "You're just a kid nobody's m

Chapter 4
Back at the house, I stood under the shower. Hot water ran down my face, and I could not tell where it ended and the tears began. My phone buzzed. It was a message from Colette.[Felix is stable.]I stared at the words for a long time before I typed back: [Thank you for everything.]A while later, another message came through: [Reid, Stefan and Emmett have had a rough time. Try to be more understanding.]I laughed.Understanding? In my last life, being understanding had cost me my son. In this one, I was done being understanding.…The next morning, I made soup and brought it to the hospital, but I stopped outside the room when I heard Stefan's voice."Colette, your necklace is crooked. Let me fix it for you.""It's fine."His voice had gone so soft that it was almost a purr. "Hold still. You were up all night. It kills me to see you like this."I pushed the door open. Stefan was pressed close enough to Colette that their shoulders were nearly touching. He was holding her n

Chapter 5
I leaned against the wall, my phone still showing the number I had not yet dialed. It belonged to Sloane Cortland, a woman I had saved in my previous life on a winding mountain road. Her car had crashed and caught fire, with smoke pouring from the wreck. I had nearly killed myself dragging her out. When she came to, she took my hand and told me she owed me her life. If I ever needed anything, all I had to do was call.In my last life, I never dialed that number, not even as I died. This time, I had to do it for Felix.Just as my thumb hit the call button, steady footsteps echoed from the end of the corridor."You don't need to call." A woman's voice carried down the hall, clear and composed. "I'm already here."I looked up.Sloane walked toward me in a dark overcoat, more than a dozen suited bodyguards fanning out behind her. She looked more formidable than I remembered, older and sharper. She had the kind of presence that rearranged the air around her.Patients and staff clear

The surgery resumed. This time, the team was one Sloane had flown in from overseas. Professor John Kessler himself led the operation.I stood outside the operating room, barely able to hold myself upright.Colette finally arrived. Her clothes were disheveled, and her forehead was slick with sweat. "Reid, let me explain."I looked at her, calm as stone. "Explain what? How you gave our son's heart to a child who isn't even sick?"She grabbed my shoulders. "It's not like that. Stefan told me Emmett's condition had worsened. I panicked.""You panicked."I laughed. "Colette, do you know how wide our son's chest is cut open right now? Do you know that if this surgery fails, they won't even get the chance to close him back up? You don't know any of that. All you care about is Stefan's tears and Emmett's whining."Colette, starting today, Felix doesn't have a mother."The color drained from her face. "What are you saying?"I pulled a document from my bag. "These are divorce papers. I

Chapter 7
Felix woke up two days later. The first thing he did when he opened his eyes was search for me. "Dad...""I'm here." I took his hand."Where's Mom?""She's busy. She has some important things she needs to take care of."Colette was, in fact, busy.Sloane moved fast. Stefan's forged medical records were exposed, and the hospital filed charges against him. He panicked and stormed into Colette's company, screaming that she had promised to protect him. That was when Colette realized she had been played from the very beginning. What broke her was worse than that. Emmett was not her nephew at all.A paternity test revealed that Emmett's biological mother was an old flame of Stefan's, a woman with a criminal record. The child Colette's sister had actually given Stefan died before it ever left the delivery room.Even her sister's so-called accidental death had been no accident. She had uncovered the truth, and Stefan had pushed her down a flight of stairs. The doctor held Emmett's ev

Chapter 8
The day Felix was discharged, Colette came. She had lost weight, enough that the hollows under her eyes made her look ten years older. Her voice was hoarse. "Reid, we need to talk.""There's nothing to talk about." I kept packing Felix's things. She turned to our son. "Felix, I'm so sorry."Felix held the stuffed bear I had bought him and looked at her calmly. "It's okay, Ms. Harmon."The name hit Colette harder than a slap. "What did you just call me?"Felix said it again. "Ms. Harmon. Dad said you're not my mom anymore."Colette's eyes went red. "Felix, I am your mother. I always have been.""But you didn't want me. You didn't want Dad, and you didn't want me either. You gave the thing that was supposed to save my life to Emmett."He tilted his head. "Ms. Harmon, if Emmett got sick again, would you trade my life for his?"The question went through Colette like a blade. She sank to her knees and pulled him into her arms. "No. Never again. I was wrong. I know I was wrong."F

Prison was not kind to Stefan. He had made an enemy of Sloane Cortland, and that came with consequences. Word was that he was assigned the hardest labor every day, never given enough to eat, and kept getting hurt in ways that were always ruled accidental. What broke him was Emmett. The boy had been placed in a specialized institution. As a child with XYY syndrome, he quickly became their most difficult case.He attacked a teacher. He bit another child. Eventually, he was put in isolation. When Stefan saw him on visiting day, the boy stared back with the flat, savage eyes of a caged animal. "Dad, when I get out, I'm going to kill that man."The blood drained from Stefan's face. It hit him then that what he had raised was not a son. It was something else entirely. He went on a hunger strike and demanded to see Colette, so she went. Through the glass partition, Stefan wept openly. "Colette, I was wrong. Please, help me."Colette looked at him without a trace of warmth. "Help you? I
