His mother stepped forward towards me, “I guess, the past is the past and the main thing is you are together now and you two are happy?” Her words at the end hung like a question in the air.

    The day was tedious, everyone bid me happy birthday. The last meeting of the day stayed on track, and we resolved the agenda in half the time I thought it would take.
