Chapter 24 The Night Before

Valentino stretched out across the sofa, crossing his arms behind his head.

"I still think we should drag Brody into the courtyard and force him to talk in front of everyone."

Cassian looked up from his papers. "That is easily the worst idea you have had all week. And you have had plenty."

"It gets the job done," Valentino argued. "He is planning something underhanded for tomorrow. We cut it off early."

Lorenzo stood near the window, his eyes fix

Chapter 29 Quiet HoursThe second wave never came. One moment the corridor outside held Brody, the witch, and a line of hunters. The next moment only the broken door and the smell of blood remained. Distant horns sounded from the upper levels of the Academy. Something larger had pulled the Council’s attention away. No one in the small stone room trusted the sudden quiet, but no one had the strength to chase the reason either. Lorenzo still stood in front of my cot for a long time before Cassian finally pushed him into a chair. The movement pulled at the spear wound on his arm. He did not complain. He only sat and watched the empty doorway as if daring it to produce another threat. I felt completely hollow lying there. Every muscle in my body ached. The golden fire that had torn through the arena was gone, leaving only a deep, ringing emptiness. Even turning my head took effort. Through the open mind-link the pain of the three Alphas arrived in dull waves—Lorenzo’s a

Chapter 28The Stand at the Door The iron door quaked under a second blow. Metal ground against metal as the heavy bolts strained against the frame."Stand back from the threshold," Lorenzo commanded, his voice dropping an octave into his full Alpha resonance. Valentino shifted his weight to his good leg, shifting his short blade into a reverse grip. "Sounds like six or seven of them out there. Council enforcers, judging by the heavy boots.""They brought heavy equipment," Cassian added quietly, his ice-blue eyes fixed on the top hinge. "They know who is inside." A third strike hit the oak panels, splintering the center beam. A thin line of light pierced the dim room, scattering dust motes across the stone floor.I struggled against the weight in my limbs, forcing my elbows underneath me. Every inch of my skin burned like raw ash, but sitting completely helpless on the cot felt worse than the physical pain. Stay down, Elara, Cassian’s thought brushed

Chapter 27The Lower WingDarkness held on longer than it should have. When my eyes finally opened, the ceiling was low stone, not the open sky of the arena. The air smelled of dust, old iron, and blood. Pain sat deep in every muscle. The golden fire was gone. Only emptiness remained in its place.Lorenzo’s voice came first, close and rough.“She is awake.”Cassian appeared on the left side of the narrow cot. A deep cut ran across his forehead, already half-closed but still dark with dried blood. Valentino stood near the heavy door, one hand pressed against the gash on his thigh.“How long?” The question came out thin.“Almost two hours,” Cassian said. “You burned everything you had. Another minute on that sand and your heart would have stopped.”Lorenzo sat on the edge of the cot. His left sleeve was torn open. A long spear wound cut across his upper arm, bound tight with a strip of cloth that was already turning red again.“We are in the lower storage wing,” he said. “Old A

Chapter 26The Broken Line The three Alphas moved before the guards could react.Lorenzo reached the first armored man before he could even raise his catch-net. With one hard swipe, Lorenzo smashed the man's chest plate, throwing him fifteen feet across the sand into the outer wall. Valentino ducked under a heavy shock-staff, grabbed another guard by the neck, and slammed him flat into the dirt, kicking his weapon away. Cassian stepped right in front of me, using his body as a shield. His face was pale and slick with sweat as he pulled two long silver daggers from his belt."Stay down, Elara," Cassian said softly, keeping his eyes on the remaining guards. "Do not push your body any further.""I can stand," I gasped, trying to pull more golden heat from my chest. But my knees buckled again, and I stumbled against his back. My strength was gone. The Sol-Wolf energy had burned through my stamina in seconds.High above us, Elena ran to the front railing of

Chapter 25The Sand The morning horn did not sound like a wake-up call. It sounded like an alarm.I stood in the shadow of the arched stone tunnel, looking out at the main arena. The sun was hot, baking the red dirt in the middle of the pit. High above us, the wooden stands were packed with hundreds of students, pack leaders, and Council members. Up in the royal viewing box, Elena Bellamy sat next to her father. She wore a bright white dress, looking down at the sand with a slow, triumphant smile. A few feet away, standing near the heavy iron control levers, was Inspector Brody. His coat was buttoned tight, his face completely blank."Keep your chin up," Valentino whispered beside me. "Do not give Elena the satisfaction of seeing you shake.""I am trying," I said, my voice barely louder than the hum of the crowd.Cassian stepped up on my left, his hand brushing against mine. "The moment you cross that threshold, you are on your own physically. But the link stays op

"He is planning something underhanded for tomorrow. We cut it off early." Lorenzo stood near the window, his eyes fixed on the dark grounds below. "We do not throw the school into chaos the night before the Showcase. We finish the trial first. Then we deal with him."The room quieted down. The fire in the hearth popped, sending a spark up the chimney. Outside, the pathways were completely empty. Most students had already turned in for the night. Cassian tapped the edge of the sealed letter they had received earlier. "Kael will be in the top stands. Elena is sitting right beside him. Brody controls the su
