The executive elevator lobby was so quiet she could hear her own breathing.

Darcy stepped out. Her black heels sank soundlessly into the thick charcoal carpet. The décor here was brutally cold. Black steel and high-end marble. Not a single decorative flourish in sight. No family photos on the walls. No potted plants. No soft lighting. Just hard edges, expensive materials, and the suffocating weight of a territory claimed and defended by an apex predator.

The whole space radiated the kind of absolute ownership that made lesser wolves' hackles rise on instinct.

This wasn't an office. This was a beast's den, built of steel and capital. And she was walking straight into its jaws.

Darcy stopped in front of the massive black walnut doors. She didn't hesitate. She knocked.

"Come in."

Asher Kingston's voice came through, low and cold, utterly flat. No warmth. No curiosity. Just the absolute certainty of a man who expected doors to open the moment he spoke.

Darcy pushed the doors open.

The office was enormous, commanding the best view in the entire building. A sweeping panorama of the city's skyline. Skyscrapers jutting into the pale morning light like jagged teeth against the horizon.

Asher stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows. His back was to the door, tall and broad-shouldered. One hand in his pocket. The other holding a cigar. The smoke curled upward in lazy spirals, catching the sunlight before dissolving into the vast emptiness of the room.

He didn't turn at the sound of her footsteps. But the air in the room, calm a second ago, tightened the instant she crossed the threshold. It was like walking into a room where a wild animal had just raised its head, nostrils flaring, catching a scent it hadn't expected.

"Mr. Kingston."

Darcy stopped three meters from his desk. A safe, social distance. She held the folder she'd just used to destroy the PR director, spine straight, amber eyes clear and composed. Her heart was beating faster than she wanted it to, but she kept her breathing even, her face unreadable. She'd spent eight years learning how to look calm when everything inside her was screaming.

Asher turned slowly.

Sunlight caught the sharp angles of his chiseled face, refracting through the faint, unextinguished gold still smoldering in his eyes. He looked down at her from his full height, those cold gray irises hiding a current deep enough to drown in.

His gaze swept over her, not like a man looking at a woman, but like a wolf sizing up something that had wandered into his territory. Assessing. Weighing. Deciding.

"Sit."

He walked to his desk and sat. He slid a printed contract across the polished surface.

"Chief Risk Officer appointment for the billion-dollar merger. Salary multiplied by five. Direct report to me. Full access to all group-level risk channels. Your office will be on this floor, two doors down from mine."

His tone was flat, businesslike. But his eyes pinned her like a blade, searching for every micro-expression, every flicker of hesitation. He didn't blink. Didn't look away. The weight of that stare was enough to make most people crumble.

He's testing me.

Darcy knew exactly how this looked. A nameless assistant on a minimum-wage PR salary. How did she crack the North Barrens Financial Swiss corridor? Where did she get an actuarial model that could demolish the entire board? How did a girl with no pedigree, no connections, no visible history, walk into a room full of wolves and walk out with a director in cuffs?

Everything about her screamed suspicion. She'd walked in here gambling with her life. She knew that. And yet this man.

What was his angle?

"Generous terms."

Darcy stepped forward and picked up the contract. She didn't sit. She stood at the edge of his desk, flipping through the pages with quick, practiced efficiency. Her eyes moved over the dense legal text, parsing clauses and fine print at a speed that would make a lawyer's head spin. It was a good deal. Too good.

She looked up and met his gaze straight on.

"But Mr. Kingston, nothing in this world comes free. You just had your PR director dragged out of here like a corpse. Now you're handing this much power to a newly promoted junior. Aren't you worried I'm a plant from one of your competitors? A spy sent to bleed you dry from the inside?"

"A plant?"

Asher's mouth curved into a cold, predatory smile. He leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his long legs, every inch the apex predator surveying his domain. The movement was unhurried, deliberate, the way a wolf stretches before it takes down its prey.

"If you were working for the opposition, you'd have sold Kingston's data a hundred times over by now. You could have walked out of here with enough leverage to bankrupt this entire group. Instead, you spent a year buried in PR, sorting paperwork for a bunch of incompetents, drinking break-room coffee and keeping your head down. That's not a spy. That's a survivor."

He rose from his chair and walked around the massive desk, closing the distance between them with steady, deliberate steps. Each footfall was silent on the thick carpet, but the weight of his presence filled the room like a storm gathering.

"I don't care what you're running from. I don't care who's hunting you, or why you're hiding under a name that isn't yours."

Darcy's blood went cold at those words. Her fingers tightened almost imperceptibly on the contract. He knew.

But she didn't flinch. Didn't break eye contact. She just watched him, waiting.

Asher stopped less than half a foot away, looking down at her from his full height. His eyes burned with something dark and possessive.

"Someone who wants to earn her place on merit is worth ten of those greedy directors out there. I'll give you the resources and the authority you need. You help me tear out every traitor in this organization. That's the deal. Your past stays your past. Your secrets stay yours. But your work, that belongs to me."

His hand came up, and for a moment she thought he was going to touch her face. But he stopped an inch short, his fingers hovering near her jaw.

"No one touches you while you're under my watch. And don't think for a second you can play me."

Asher stepped back and stubbed out his cigar in the crystal ashtray on the corner of his desk. As the smoke cleared, the scent of him hit her full force. Rain-soaked cedar and agave, sharp and intoxicating at this proximity. It mixed with the lingering traces of gunpowder and cold steel that clung to his suit like the ghost of old battles.

Inside him, the steel-gray wolf was screaming at the edges of his sanity.

This wasn't a hallucination. The scent from the blizzard twelve years ago. The girl who'd saved him. The mate he'd searched for, for twelve years. She was right here. Inches away. Breathing the same air. Standing in the same room. She had no idea what she was doing to him.

Ruthless possession flooded his veins. His gray irises contracted violently, the dangerous gold of his predator's pupils bleeding through. He could feel his claws threatening to extend, his fangs aching to sink into the soft curve of her neck, to mark her, to claim her, to make her his in a way no one could ever undo.

His hand shot out, long fingers burning hot, and clamped around her wrist, the one holding the contract, yanking her a full inch closer.

Rip.

The contract paper crinkled between them.

Darcy's spine went electric. Her body collided with his chest, hard as forged steel, his furnace heat searing through the thin fabric of her cheap suit. She could feel every ridge of muscle beneath his shirt, every frantic beat of his heart. Wild. Untamed. Completely out of control.

"Mr. Kingston."

Pressed against his chest, she could hear it, the wild, out-of-control pounding of his heart. She fought down the primal shudder of being caught by an apex predator and lifted her chin. Her amber eyes held no fear. Just cold, clear, unyielding wariness. Her voice came out steady, even, as if she weren't pressed against the most dangerous man on the continent.

"Is this how Kingston Group seals its business deals? Because I have to say, the HR onboarding process wasn't nearly this... hands-on."

Asher dipped his head, his nose nearly brushing the delicate skin behind her ear. He inhaled deep, greedy, devouring the scent that drove him mad. The hunger he'd been suppressing for so long raged through his veins like wildfire, burning through every shred of restraint he had left. His eyes had gone fully golden now, bright as molten metal, wild and feral.

His breath landed warm on the skin below her ear. Cigar ash and something else. Something metallic.

Blood.

She remembered the dark stains on the inside of his shirt last night in the elevator. The way he'd bitten his own lip until it bled. He'd hurt himself again. Before coming to see her. To keep himself from hurting her instead.

The realization landed somewhere in her chest, sharp and uncomfortable.

They stood locked in that breathless stalemate, bodies barely apart, the tension between them thick enough to choke on. She could feel his chest heaving against hers, the raw struggle playing out in every strained muscle of his body.

Asher stared into that obstinate coldness in her eyes, and his jaw clenched so hard it trembled. He bit down, hard, and the copper taste in his mouth dragged him back from the edge by a thread.

Can't scare her off. This lone wolf was too wary. Too smart. Too used to running. One wrong step and she'd sever every tie and vanish without a trace. Into the night. Into another city. Into another name he'd have to track down for another twelve years.

His grip on her wrist tightened, then slowly, reluctantly, eased. His fingers uncurled one by one, as if letting go of something he wanted to hold onto forever. His voice came out scraped raw, like it had been dragged over gravel.

"Your office moves to this floor. Starting today."

He released her wrist. His fingers trailing across her palm as he pulled back, leaving a lingering heat that prickled her skin and made her want to rub the feeling away. But she didn't. She held his gaze, refusing to give him that satisfaction.

Asher stepped back half a pace, the cold mask sliding back into place. But those dark gold eyes still tracked her like a hunter watching prey. His chest was still heaving, just slightly, the only sign of the war he was fighting inside his own skin.

"Right under my nose, Darcy. You're not going anywhere."

Darcy flexed her wrist. It was red where he'd gripped her, the marks of his fingers already blooming into faint bruises against her pale skin. She'd have to cover those later. She slapped the signed contract onto his desk with a sharp smack, the sound cutting through the thick tension like a blade.

She met his eyes, that barely restrained beast staring back at her, and a smile curved across her lips. Sharp. Dazzling. Unafraid. It was the smile of someone who had absolutely nothing to lose.

"Anytime, Mr. Kingston."

She turned and walked out of the office without looking back. Her heels clicked against the floor, steady and deliberate, each step a declaration that she would not be owned, would not be caged, would not be anything other than exactly who she chose to be.

Five steps past the door, Darcy finally let herself exhale.

She leaned against the cold marble wall of the corridor, eyes closed, breathing slow and deep. Her heart was hammering so hard she could feel it in her throat. Her hands were trembling, just barely, but enough that she had to press them flat against her thighs to stop it.

She looked down at her palm. A faint red line where he'd held her. She closed her fist around it, feeling the sting of her nails digging into her own skin.

Behind her, the heavy doors closed soundlessly.

Asher leaned against his desk, staring at his own hand, the one that had held her. He could still feel the ghost of that scent on his fingertips. Cedar and agave. Bitter and sweet. The smell of a blizzard. The smell of a girl who'd saved his life and then disappeared into the snow like she'd never existed.

He pressed his tongue against the unhealed cut on the inside of his lip, tasting the familiar copper again. His golden eyes flickered, barely perceptible, in the shadows of his empty office.

He'd found her.

And he was never letting her go again.

The shrill red alarm pulsed urgently across the hall's soaring dome.Four hulking wolf guards formed a semicircle around Darcy, their stun batons crackling with cold blue electricity. The watching ladies had retreated several meters, whispering among themselves as they waited to see how this scene would play out.Maeve's face had gone pale, but she still clung stubbornly to Darcy's sleeve.Darcy pulled Maeve fully behind her without turning, shielding her with her own body. Her expression remained calm. She didn't retreat. Instead, she pulled out her phone and dialed Cass Haute Couture's customer service hotline. The call connected. Darcy put it on speaker."This is Darcy Clark, Risk Control Director. Please connect me to the general manager's office."The customer service representative on the other end paused, clearly caught off guard. Her voice came back polished and professionally evasive."I'm sorry, miss. We don't have a 'Risk C

The elevator doors slid shut with a heavy thud in front of her.Darcy stood in the penthouse lobby, holding a heavy-duty access card that shimmered with a faint dark-gold luster. It was the highest-level clearance for Kingston's entire private estate, and the core commercial district beyond. The card was solid in her hand, cold against her palm, radiating the kind of authority that made lesser wolves step aside without thinking.Ten minutes ago, Asher had been urgently summoned to the security office for the post-hearing wartime sealing procedures. Before he left, he'd shoved the card into her palm without giving her a single chance to refuse."I don't like my employees dressing like that to work."His parting remark, a low, clipped statement that wasn't quite a complaint and wasn't quite an order, still echoed in her ears. There was no warmth in it, no explanation, just the absolute certainty of a man who expected his commands to be followed without ques

Asher slowly withdrew the crushing presence he'd unleashed in the central hall. The air in the massive space gradually returned to something breathable, though the tension lingered like a blade still hanging by a thread. He didn't spare a single glance at the ashen-faced, twisted-featured Elders on the dais. Men who had been so certain of their victory just minutes ago, now reduced to trembling silence. He simply turned his head slightly, his dark gold eyes cutting coldly toward the head of security stationed at the exit. His voice was low, commanding, carrying the weight of an absolute, unappealable verdict."Hearing adjourned. Under wartime sealing protocol, seal the hall. Records frozen.""If a single word spoken on this dais today leaks beyond these walls, the review board and the security detail will be held jointly accountable. No exceptions."No hysterical threats. No raised voice. Just the cold, precise imposition of order, delivered with the fina

Kingston's central hall. The towering glass dome fractured the remaining rain-light into cold, scattered flecks across the marble floor.Darcy stood at the center of the hall, the frigid air cutting across her skin. The cold sweat on her back had soaked through her shirt. The old wound deep in her left shoulder throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, as if tiny bolts of electricity were crackling through her bones."First question. Is Darcy Clark your birth name?"The Grand Elder's staff struck the stone floor, his voice landing like a hammer blow."Last night, the risk control gateway was nearly breached. Kingston's core data came within inches of being leaked. And yet, we've searched every archive on the continent. There is no record of the name 'Darcy Clark' anywhere. No birth registration. No family record. Nothing."The Grand Elder's gaze cut through the hall like a blade."A core officer with the highest risk control authority in Kingston, someone who could shut down the entire b

The black SUV came to a smooth stop in the underground garage of Kingston's top-floor private residence. After the engine cut out, the cabin fell into several seconds of dead silence, broken only by the dull thud of rain against the roof.Darcy didn't look away from his gaze. Her fingers rested on the inner door handle, her amber eyes clear and composed."You flatter me, Mr. Kingston. What else could I possibly be? If my background weren't clean, I never would have passed Kingston's rigorous screening in the first place."Asher's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly. His dark gold pupils caught the dim garage light, gleaming with dangerous sharpness. He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping low and heavy."Don't brush me off. People from the North Barrens crossed half a continent to find you. If you expect me to believe you're just some ordinary Omega, you're going to have to try harder than that."Darcy didn't so much as blink. She met his gaze wit

Instead, she pocketed the phone and reached for her bag on the desk, her movements calm and deliberate.Asher leaned against the doorframe, his tall frame blocking most of the exit. His fingertips tapped a lazy, irregular rhythm against the edge of the door, his dark gold eyes fixed on her from his full height. The casual pose did nothing to hide the predatory awareness coiled beneath his stillness."Door's been forced. Are you heading over to collect a body, or to deliver yourself as the main course?"Darcy stopped half a step in front of him, tilting her chin up to meet his gaze. Her amber eyes were cool and unhurried, completely unruffled by his presence."To see who took the bait."She tapped the side of her briefcase with one finger, her ton
