Chapter 4

Author: Pineapple Latte
The case was soon transferred to the cybercrime unit. Detective Silas Mercer, who was assigned to the investigation, didn't immediately dismiss my story. Instead, he went back through everything that had happened from the beginning.

"You refused to meet him, and he knew. You called the police, and he knew. You went to the hospital, and he knew that too."

"Yes."

"Every time he managed to find you, what did you have with you?"

"My phone."

"What about at the hospital?"

"The police had taken my phone."

"Your clothes, keys, jewelry… Was there anything you had with you every time?"

I paused. "I didn't notice."

Silas decided to conduct a completely controlled test. They took away my clothes, phone, keys, and jewelry. The police gave me an entirely new set of clothes and placed me in a windowless room with no connection to any outside network.

Even the test phone was taken out of its sealed box right in front of me.

Silas slid the phone across the table. "Use a new account to contact Caden."

"He won't accept the request."

"Try anyway."

I created a new messaging account, searched for Caden's profile, and sent him a friend request.

I typed, "This is Maisie. I'm willing to meet you."

One minute passed without a response. Then ten. Still nothing.

I sent another request, this time including the room number, the floor, and even the door code.

Caden never appeared.

The test continued for a full 20 hours. For the first time since I came back to life, I didn't receive a single message from him.

Silas placed the test results in front of me. "There's no malware on your phone, and there are no records of any unusual logins to your messaging account. No one tried to contact you during the controlled test either."

"Because he knew the police were here."

"How would he know that?"

I couldn't answer.

Silas continued, "There were no traces of the red writing at Brielle's house, and the server at the coffee shop simply slipped by accident. As for the electric scooter, we haven't been able to identify the rider yet."

"So you think I'm crazy too?"

"I didn't say that."

"But that's what you mean."

Silas was silent for a moment. "Maisie, you haven't had a proper night's sleep in days. When someone is under extreme fear and stress, they can misinterpret things."

"He's coming to kill me at midnight."

"Do you have any proof?"

My lips parted, but no words came out. That message had disappeared too.

Silas glanced at the time. "Maisie, we can't keep everyone here waiting because of a message that no longer exists."

I dug my nails into my palm. There were only 15 minutes left until midnight.

The police no longer believed me. Brielle was lying in a hospital bed because of me. If I couldn't figure out how Caden was watching me, I was going to die for a third time.

A staff member brought in my personal belongings. My phone, keys, earbuds, and several sealed evidence bags were placed on the table one by one.

Silas signed the handover form. "During the test, we kept all of these in a shielded storage cabinet outside the room to eliminate any possible interference. Check everything. If there's nothing wrong, sign here."

The moment my old phone was placed on the table, the screen suddenly lit up. Caden had sent me a message. "Baby, I'm here to pick you up."

Below it was a bright red countdown.

14:59.

14:58.

I stared at the numbers ticking down as everything that had happened over the past few days flashed through my mind.

Calling the police hadn't worked. Changing locations hadn't worked. Getting rid of my phone hadn't worked. Even the police sting hadn't been enough to force him to show himself.

I'd kept changing my choices. But no matter where I ran, Caden always found me first.

Except during those 20 hours. He hadn't sent me a single message. And now, the moment the test was over, he had appeared again. There was no way that was a coincidence.

The countdown kept ticking.

14:32.

14:31.

If I didn't change something, I would die at his hands in 15 minutes, just as I had in my previous two lives.

But this time, something was different.

I stared at the items on the table, mentally piecing together every detail from the past few days.

Then, it hit me.

I snapped my head up. "I know how he's doing it."

After Ronan was arrested, the police searched several hideouts registered under his name.Along with surveillance equipment and tools he'd used in his crimes, they also found belongings from several of his victims. The hard drives contained a massive collection of secretly recorded videos, chat logs, and what he called "loyalty tests".He used fake identities to approach women who lived alone, then used gifts to listen in on them and track their locations.Whenever a victim started to suspect something, he would threaten her in ways that left no evidence, making the people around her think she was crazy. The delivery riders, cleaners, and electric scooter riders had all been hired through anonymous online platforms. Each person had only been responsible for one small task. They had never met one another and knew nothing about the full plan. The hospital surveillance footage, the tracking at the coffee shop, and the fake messages on my phone could all be explained now.He wasn't

The blade pressed against my skin. I didn't move away. "Ronan, you were never going to let either of us go."His eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?""In my first life, I refused to meet you, so you accused me of seeing someone else behind your back. In my second life, I agreed to meet you, and you called me cheap and easy.""Shut up!" His grip suddenly tightened. The blade sliced into my skin, and blood trickled down my neck. But I kept my eyes fixed on him. "There was never a right answer. Because you never wanted loyalty. You just wanted an excuse to kill."Ronan's face twisted with rage. "You were the ones who lied to me first! My mother lied to me. My ex-girlfriend lied to me too. They both said they loved me, and in the end, didn't they both leave me for someone else?""So you killed them?""They deserved to die!"Every word came through clearly over the pendant. The tracking module inside had been removed, but the microphone and transmitter were still working. And the rece

The location was an abandoned movie theater on the outskirts of the city.Silas refused immediately, saying, "You can't go.""He has Brielle.""You're the one he wants.""If I don't go, he'll kill her." I looked at Silas. "But I can make him think I'm still the same person he's been manipulating all along."The police fitted my clothes with a tracker and recording equipment. But I knew none of it would fool Ronan. He used to be a security engineer, and he'd already proven he could compromise the smart devices the police relied on."Give me the pendant."Silas frowned. "Are you out of your mind?""He knows we've discovered the pendant, so he'll definitely check whether I'm wearing it."I had the technicians remove the tracking module inside, leaving only the microphone and transmitter. Then, I spoke into the pendant, "I'll come alone. Don't hurt Brielle."A little over ten seconds later, Ronan replied, "That's my good girl."He was listening. Exactly what I wanted. On the

The police headed to the abandoned apartment that same night. When they opened the door, everyone stopped in their tracks. There was no furniture in the living room. All four walls were covered with photos of me going to work, eating, sleeping, and even showering.Beside every photo was a time and a comment."Skirt too short.""Laughing with a male coworker.""Still not home at 10:00 pm.""Liar."A chill ran through my entire body.Ronan had never questioned me about any of those things. Whenever we talked, he would only say, "Baby, I trust you."So, that supposed trust had only existed because he'd already known everything I did.More than a dozen computers filled the bedroom. The hard drives had already been removed. All that remained on the desk was a cup of coffee that was still warm."He hasn't been gone long."Silas ordered the nearby roads sealed off.But the apartment's rear window was connected to an unfinished building next door. There were no security cameras in

The police locked down the entire building and investigated everyone inside one by one. Eventually, they discovered that the photo hadn't been taken by a person at all.Someone had remotely accessed the smart TV in the conference room and activated the camera above the screen, which had a clear view of the evidence bag on the table.Silas immediately unplugged the TV."Your phone isn't the only thing he's hacked."The tech team continued tracing the device's signal, but all they found was a chain of overseas servers. Caden had prepared for this long ago.Fortunately, the delivery rider gave them a location where he was supposed to collect his payment. The person who had posted the job had instructed him to pick up the cash from a locker at a mall on the south side of the city once the job was done. The police set up surveillance there in advance. Sure enough, the following afternoon, the locker door popped open remotely. There was no money inside, only a phone. A single message

"Put everything back in the shielded cabinet."Silas frowned. "What did you figure out?""Don't ask yet. Leave the phone out here and put everything else back in one at a time."Although the staff didn't understand, they did as I asked. The keys went back into the cabinet. The countdown kept going. Then, the earbuds went in. The numbers didn't stop. The moment the third evidence bag was placed inside the cabinet, the countdown on my phone suddenly froze. 13:07.One second passed. Then two. The screen didn't change.Silas immediately turned to the staff member. "What's in that bag?""Ms. Vale's jewelry."I stared at the shielded cabinet. "Take it back out."The instant the evidence bag was brought back into the room, the countdown started moving again. 13:06.Immediately afterward, another message from Caden appeared. "Baby, what are you playing at?"The room fell silent.Silas strode over to me. "Which piece of jewelry?"The staff member opened the bag. Inside were a si
