Chapter 1

Author: Bunny Shortage
After my best friend, Tricia Lambert, had a breakup, she dragged me along with her to spend Christmas together. She aptly called it having a "single women's night out", and we went to see the fireworks show that was being put on for the festivities.

However, the truth was that I had been secretly dating someone for six months without telling her.

Thus, I went out with her with a guilty conscience.

In the midst of the crowd, Tricia suddenly pointed ahead and exclaimed in surprise, "Damn! Isn't that my brother?"

I followed her gaze and saw a tall, eye-catching figure in the crowd.

I knew that figure very well—it was Chris Lambert, Tricia's older brother. He was even wearing the black puffer jacket that I'd given him.

Since he couldn't spend Christmas with me, I had given him his gift in advance.

Indeed, the boyfriend I had been hiding from everyone was my best friend's brother.

But why was he here?

Just as I was wondering, I heard the sound of fireworks exploding.

The sparks streamed across the night sky like scattered stars. Couples around us hugged and kissed each other, seemingly trying to freeze time in this fleeting, romantic moment.

Chris was no exception. He turned to the woman beside him, gently cupped her face like she was a treasure, and kissed her.

It felt like a jolt of electricity ran through my whole body.

So, he hadn't come alone.

He had turned down my Christmas invite, claiming to work overtime, just so he could watch fireworks with another woman.

It truly felt like the moment had been frozen in time. I couldn't hear the surrounding noise or see the fireworks.

The cold wind stung my eyes as the sight of the sweetly kissing couple slowly blurred before me.

Tricia pounded on me excitedly. "Oh my gosh! That's Yvonne! Chris finally got the school belle! Can you believe him?"

I looked up at the dazzling scene, trying hard not to let the tears in my eyes fall. I just wanted to run away.

However, Tricia grabbed my arm and dragged me forward through the crowd.

"No can do! We already ran into him, so now he owes us a late-night snack!" she said excitedly.

By the time we got to Chris, the fireworks had just ended. The night sky returned to silence, and the two pulled apart, but their hands remained tightly clasped.

Tricia suddenly slapped his shoulder. "Caught you red-handed! Aren't you going to introduce us?"

Chris turned around and froze when he saw me. He rubbed his nose awkwardly and blurted out, "What are you two doing here?"

Tricia shouted at him, "What, are single people not allowed to see fireworks on Christmas? Quit dodging the question and fess up!"

Chris pulled his gaze away from me and looked gently at the blushing woman beside him, saying, "This is my… girlfriend."

Then, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and softly added, "That's my sister, and the one beside her…"

Both of them focused their gazes on me, and I felt my eyes sting. I immediately lowered my head.

I heard Chris introducing me, "She's my sister's friend, so she's kind of like a sister to me."

Yvonne shyly greeted us. "Hello. My name is Yvonne Simmons."

Tricia snickered and said, "I knew it! Chris has liked you for ages. He even showed me your picture and couldn't stop talking about you."

To avoid exposing our relationship, I almost never appeared when both siblings were present together. Even when chatting with Tricia, I tried to steer clear of any topic about Chris.

It turned out Chris had secretly liked Yvonne for a long time, huh?

Then what was the point of carefully hiding what we had for the past six months?

I took a deep breath and forced a smile. "Chris and… Yvonne, Merry Christmas to you both."

As soon as I spoke, I realized my voice was trembling.

Ten minutes ago, I had received a message from Chris.

He said, "Sorry, babe. I'm really busy this year and don't have time to be with you. I'm still buried in work right now. Hope you have a happy and unforgettable holiday."

He really did give me an unforgettable Christmas, relegating me as his "sister" in such an awkward moment.

Since Chris could no longer contact me, he came straight to school to corner me. He didn't even bother hiding it from Tricia. He just came right up and grabbed my hand in front of her."Yara, it's been… a long time since we talked. Could you give me a bit of time?" he pleaded.Tricia stood there stunned, staring at me, then at Chris. She was clearly too shocked to process what was happening."You two… What's going on?" she asked.I yanked my hand away from Chris and held back my anger as I said, "Chris, I think I've made myself very clear."Chris smiled bitterly. "I know you have a boyfriend now. I messed up before, and I'm willing to wait… until you break up…"Right then, Xander and Joshua arrived to pick us up.My eyes met Xander's as he strode toward us. His gaze was dark, and it felt like he could erupt in anger any second. When he reached us, I quickly wrapped my arm around his. "We’re doing great and have no plans to break up," I said firmly.Xander's expression eased

And just like that, before I had even realized it, I really became Xander's girlfriend.Soon, winter break ended, and we returned to school.Whenever he had free time, Xander would come to attend classes with me or take me out to eat.He always brought small gifts with him—sometimes a handmade flower bracelet from a streetside vendor or a cute plush keychain. He would always say he just happened to buy it while passing by the stores.Tricia clicked her tongue in amazement. "Seriously, I never pegged Xander as the type who spoils his girl like this!"She used the opportunity to scold Joshua, "Look at your friend. I'm displeased with you now!"…One day, Xander was waiting for me outside the classroom building. As soon as the bell rang, I dashed downstairs, only to find him talking to someone. It was Yvonne's ex-boyfriend, or more accurately, her current boyfriend—they had gotten back together.Yvonne saw me approaching and pulled me aside. "You used to date Chris, didn't you?"

Shortly after that conversation, Tricia dragged me straight to the airport. "It's Joshua's birthday! Come with me, please!" she said.Joshua was from Heston, a city in the north. And before I knew it, I was being hauled onto a flight there. As soon as we stepped out of the airport, I saw that everything around was blanketed in white. There was also a car already waiting for us outside.Tricia dove into the front seat, teeth chattering as she shouted about how cold it was.I opened the back door and saw Xander, fully geared up. He was bundled up tight in the works—scarf, hat, gloves, and all.We didn't even get to drop off our luggage at the hotel, as we were driven straight to a ski resort. Before getting out of the car, Xander handed me a pair of warm gloves and a scarf. I didn't refuse, because it was too cold.Joshua started grumbling with great indignation, "My dad used to drag me out to build character, and I nearly puked from skiing. Now, you finally visit, and this is wha

My face collided into Xander's chest. Through the thick layers of his puffer jacket, I could hear a fast, pounding heartbeat. We were so close that I couldn't tell if the heartbeat was his or mine. After some time had passed, Xander slowly let me go and said, "He's gone."My face was flushed red as I let Xander tug on my hat and lead me back to the campsite.Chris had returned ahead of us, and his expression was darker than a storm cloud. Out of nowhere, he started talking about Xander."With your good looks, I bet you've had your fair share of girlfriends, right?" he remarked.Joshua scoffed as answered for Xander. "Don't be fooled by his looks. He barely talks, so girls who try to chase him all end up getting scared off.""Then what's going on between you and Yara?" Chris suddenly asked, startling everyone.Xander stayed quiet, staring at me like he was waiting for my answer.I closed my eyes and said, "We're dating."I mentally apologized to Xander while I used him as a h

After getting through the hell of exam week, Tricia insisted on dragging me out for a camping trip.I wondered who on Earth would want to do something so pretentious in this freezing weather.Tricia simply blinked and said, "You don't get it. Zoning out by the fire while it's snowing? It's the ultimate way to relax."I relented and left it to her and her weird logic. It wasn't until we arrived that I realized Joshua and Xander were both there too. Even Chris and Yvonne had shown up.Over the past month, Chris had tried to contact me. He had always asked me if I was doing okay and if I had been eating properly. But I never replied to him.Spending even a second of my attention on him just reminded me of how miserable I had felt on Christmas. The odd thing was that Chris and Yvonne weren't as lovey-dovey as I imagined. If anything, they seemed more distant than before. It looked like they had just fought, as Yvonne ran off with her hands covering her eyes, and Chris didn't go aft

"What's it got to do with you?" I choked out.Chris looked inexplicably annoyed. "Forget it. I drove back to look for you earlier, but you were already gone. I just wanted to talk. Since we kept the relationship a secret in the first place, there's no point in revealing it now. As for Tricia… Please don't tell her," he said. So, he came looking for me just to remind me to keep my mouth shut. The Chris standing before me now felt like a stranger compared to the one I used to know. I would've never fallen for him if I had known he was like this.I did my best to hide my pain and said calmly, "Don't worry. Even if you didn't say anything, I wouldn't tell her."Chris let out a long sigh of relief at that. He even took on a brotherly tone, telling me not to ride in another man's car so late at night. In the end, I shoved him aside and went straight upstairs.…I stayed in bed for two days, feeling drained and listless. Tricia sent tons of messages, which I ignored. Eventually, she
