Nathan winced as he collapsed onto the threshold, tears pricking at the corners of his eyes.

The pain in his wrist had intensified, its sting almost like a thousand needles pricking him at once.

As the searing sensation lingered, deep and throbbing, Nathan wondered if Valentino could feel it too.

If he was affected.

If he even cared.

Another wave of pain hit him, alongside the now high-pitched ring in his ears. His vision blurred instantly and he went limp.

By the time Nathan woke up, night had fallen. He stared up at an unfamiliar ceiling, feeling incredibly exhausted.

Wincing from lightheadedness, he sat upright, eyes darting to his left wrist.

It ached dully now, with the red string still tied into a bracelet around it.

It had taken on a deeper shade.

He wondered what that meant.

Nathan glanced round the unfamiliar room and his eyes soon landed on an IV.

He was in a hospital ward, or so it seemed.

It was different.

Too cozy.

Almost lived-in.

He swung his legs off the bed and walked up to the door. As he reached for the door handle, his heart began racing.

He placed his hand on his chest, feeling it thump rapidly.

It was the same rhythm as when the red string first formed.

His eyes snapped to his wrist and shot wide immediately at the sight.

The string was no longer a bracelet.

It was now bright red, extending from him and through the door.

A tremor ran down his spine as he snatched his hand from the door handle, backing away slowly.

Valentino was here.

A plethora of questions raced through his mind, as the pace of his beating heart increased.

This time, with dread.

He watched in horror as the door handle turned, and a crisp click through the air.

The door swung open slowly, revealing...

Mikhail!

He heaved a sigh, tension leaving his chest.

Mikhail walked in, surprised to see Nathan was awake and mobile.

"You're up," he said, before his eye brows furrowed.

"What's wrong?"

Nathan shook his head and moved to sit at the foot of the bed. He shifted slightly as Mikhail lowered himself beside him.

"Nathan," he called, his voice gentle.

"You're not okay. What happened?"

Nathan wanted to roll his eyes.

The irony stung.

"I'm okay. Last night was just wild," he replied, throwing a chuckle to sound convincing.

He watched as Mikhail's eyes skeptically narrowed, and chuckled dryly again.

"Where am I?" Nathan asked, changing the topic as he glanced around.

"In my brother's house."

The words hit him like a brick. He snapped his head to his friend's direction, eyes wide.

"What?"

Mikhail nodded, resting his chin on his hand as he pondered.

"I thought it was weird, too, that he was the one who found you."

Nathan's mouth opened slightly, in disbelief.

So, Valentino was the one who found him.

"Did he do anything to you?!" Mikhail asked suddenly, a serious expression playing on his face.

He placed his hands on Nathan's shoulders, holding them firmly.

Nathan's heart ached.

He wished he could pour out everything,

Tell him how his life had taken a dramatic turn in less than a day, but...

He simply shook his head and smiled.

"No, he didn't. I just found out he was the one who saved me, even."

Before Mikhail could throw in another question, his phone buzzed.

He retracted his hands from Nathan's shoulders and took out his phone.

A sigh escaped his mouth, a helpless expression crossing his features as he looked back at Nathan.

Nathan looked away.

He knew who had called.

Elena.

"I'm fine, now. You can go." He threw on his most convincing smile and his friend nodded, patting his shoulder.

"The minute anything seem wrong, call me. I'll see you in the morning."

Nathan nodded and watched as Mikhail upped and left.

The room was now silent, the dread from earlier creeping back in.

He glanced down at his wrist, breathing softly.

The string was still extending out the room.

As he sat down, a scene of the door swinging open and Valentino walking in played endlessly in his head.

Through it all, a question lingered.

Why had Valentino come to his apartment?

Valentino glanced over at Nathan, his chest tightening. He sighed once and dropped the pen, then rose to his feet and rounded the desk. The boy lay on the recliner, on his side, with his back facing him. "Theo."The flinch in his posture was almost palpable."What's wrong?" asked Valentino as he strode up to him and crouched down beside him slowly.Silence."Theo," Valentino purred again, this time, trying to hold back the laughter threatening to crawl out his throat. How cute! What could possibly be the problem? He definitely wasn't asleep."Did I do something wrong?" His hand reached for the boy's shoulder and he squeezed it gently. Nathan shifted and shook it off almost immediately. The man's brows arched. Maybe he had done something wrong. "I'm sorry, Theo," he murmured, sliding a hand round his waist. Nathan flinched, his skin twitching slightly. But he didn't shake him off. A sigh escaped Valentino. Thank God. "You're not gonna tell me what I did wrong? I wouldn't wanna

"I have no idea why he kept you outside," Nathan mumbled as he dumped another scoop of food into Orion's plate. The dark doberman instantly gobbled it.Nathan chuckled."You're not scary," he commented, his lips curled into a warm smile. His eyes darted to Sapphire who was asleep in the shed. "But your sister is."Orion's ears perked up and he shot his head towards Nathan. His expression changed as though he understood what the boy had said. "What?" Nathan asked, tone blank.Orion tilted his head. "It's true." The dog stared at him for a moment before he resumed his meal. Nathan crouched down beside him and sighed, hand caressing the dog's back as he watched him eat. Valentino would soon be home. But knowing that did nothing to dispose of this emptiness in his chest. Orion's ear twitched as his finger traced the veins on the shell slowly. The dog shot his head towards Nathan again. This time, he stomped its fore paws."What?" Nathan's brows furrowed. His father was wrong. He wasn't that helpless boy who watched his mother writhe in pain until she took her last breath anymore. He was Valentino. A name whispered, with a weight that was not only ancient but venomous. Years of waiting, enduring, watching had molded him.His scars weren't just marks. They were testimonies strewn about his skin of the life he had to step into. A world where power breathed and weaklings bowed and danced to its whims. A world he had dominated with nothing to his name but only the sheer will to avenge his mother's death. Nikolai was wrong. Nathan wasn't his weak spot. He was his fuel. His drive. His reason to finally put that old man in his place. And bring his brother home. To truth. To mother. Valentino's steps filled the air, crisp and heavy, laced with the undertow of something that had wreaked an oppressive silence upon the office for a week. His eyes were sharp, despite the measly hours of sleep, dark brown irises tinged with suppressed rage.

The lecture room was quiet, except for the professor's mechanical voice drifting through the air like its main goal was to put Nathan to sleep. The boy glanced round, eyes half-lidded, his head rested on his hand. Mikhail wasn't here. Elena, too. They must be busy.Their wedding would be right after the semester. He scoffed and shook his head. Why the rush? His gaze sliced back to his note and he continued writing. "That's all?" Valentino asked as he placed the last bits of Nathan's belongings in a duffel bag.The boy's eyes darted round the room and a sigh slipped through his lips. He nodded, lips curved into a small smile."Let's go then." The man could not help but return the smile. He swung the bag on his shoulder and padded towards him."Let me carry that," said Nathan as he stared up at him. His wide eyes caught the light, sapphire-flecked irises sparkling with something that made Valentino's heart skip.Valentino's smile fell into something shy and he shook his head, unable to tear his gaze away. The boy scoffed, shooting him a glare. Then he stormed away, tousled hair bouncing with each step. Once he reached the door, he stopped and moved to the side, glancing expectantly at him.The man stared at him for a moment too long, before he closed the distance between them and slid the door open.A crisp 'tsk' dripped from Nathan's lips, but the small smile playing on his lips was hard to miss

Valentino shifted, sighing as he nuzzled his head against Nathan's chest. A chill coursed down his spine when the boy's hand moved to his hair. His fingers threaded through his strands, warm tips gently brushing his scalp. Another sigh slipped through his lips and he smiled."Aren't you supposed to be working?" Nathan asked, sliding his hand to his nape.Valentino's brows furrowed, his chest tightening with discomfort. He reached for the boy's hand and guided it back to his hair.A smile crossed his lips as his heart thumped against his cheek. Faster. Harder. Than he thought was possible."Yes," he replied, fluttering his eyes close as Nathan's fingers resumed their massage. His ears pressed harder against his chest and he listened to his heart beat.It was music."Why are you here then?" Valentino didn't reply; he lifted his head just enough for their eyes to meet. Once he had his fill of that confusion-ladened gaze, he plopped his head on the boy's chest and nuzzled against it.As
