I turned toward the infirmary and froze when I saw Gabriel sitting alone on the wide windowsill. His cold, intense, unreadable eyes were locked on me. My heartbeat quickened as I walked past him, trying to ignore the tension in my chest.

Considering that Gabriel had once slipped Nightshade into my food, I knew exactly how dangerous he could be. Far more dangerous than Nathaniel.

"Anna."

His voice came from behind me.

I pretended not to hear and walked faster toward the infirmary. Gabriel's footsteps quickened to match mine until he was beside me.

"Anna, I want to talk to you," Gabriel said.

His tone wasn’t threatening, but who knew? Maybe he was just pretending. I didn’t even bother looking at him.

"Can't you see I'm bleeding?" I snapped. "I don't have time for small talk, Gabriel."

"I'm sorry."

I froze mid-step. I turned my head toward him in disbelief. Gabriel, Evelina’s son, was apologizing to me? This had to be a joke. But when I looked at him, with his tense jaw and uncertain eye

  • Tied to the Ruthless Three   50. The Heir's Selection

Even though my body felt shattered, I forced myself to get out of bed. Isolde was fast asleep, which made it easier for me to slip out of the room. I stepped outside carefully, making sure not to make a sound. My steps felt painfully slow, despite my efforts to move as quickly as possible. Every motion, every breath, brought me agony. It felt like an endless torment when I went down the stairs. I bit my lip to suppress any sound, letting out only faint hisses through my teeth.Reaching the chapel felt like it took forever. It seemed impossibly far away, or at least it felt that way. Still, I kept walking, glancing at my watch every now and then. Midnight was approaching, yet I was only halfway there.By the time the clock struck five minutes past midnight, I finally arrived at the chapel, drenched in sweat. Tears streamed down my face. God, this hurt so much!I stepped up to the closed door and pushed it open. The creaking echoed through the entire room. Up ahead, near the podium, I s

  • Tied to the Ruthless Three   49. A Nightshade Invitation

I went into my room and opened the closet to get some clothes. That’s when I saw it: an envelope sitting inside. There was no sender. It had only the Nightshade insignia. My curiosity instantly kicked in. Who had entered my room and left it there?I looked at Isolde, who rushed in, grabbed her towel and pajamas from the wardrobe, and gave me a puzzled look."Are you taking a shower or not?" she asked.I nodded. "Yeah, go ahead first. I’ll follow in a bit.”"Okay."She left the room, and I was alone again.I opened Isolde’s closet to see if she had received a letter, too, but there was nothing. I even checked her desk, but there was still nothing. Was this letter only for me?I tore open the envelope and unfolded the paper. It was an invitation for a candidate of The Heir to appear at the chapel at midnight. My heart skipped a beat as I thought of the twins and Marva.Wait. Was this some kind of competition between me and the twins? Or was it something else entirely?Marva had already

  • Tied to the Ruthless Three   48. A Game of Hearts

GABRIEL POVI’d already given up on holding back. I was worried about Anna. My concern for her was too obvious—even Nathaniel could see it. But I couldn’t help it. I had feelings for Anna.Because of Alexei’s order, I feared something might happen to her. It was clear that Alexei wanted to make sure Anna wouldn’t become a threat to him. And I was supposed to make sure everything went according to his wishes. That was Alexei’s goal, right? But his command suffocated me. Something inside me rebelled. I didn’t want to follow that decree. I wanted to protect Anna, not watch her on Alexei’s behalf. I didn’t want her to ever see me as his pawn!“Anna!” I called when she stepped out of the dining hall. She froze for a second, tilting her head slightly and smiling. That little gesture made me blush—she looked so sweet.I hurried to catch up to her. “Hi,” I said with a smile. “Done eating?” I chuckled. “I know you’re just making small talk. We ate at the same time, didn’t we?”Her light

  • Tied to the Ruthless Three   47. Blade and Boundaries

NATHANIEL POVIt sounded ridiculous—people were gossiping that I’d been training Anna in fencing. During all my years at Bastorin, I never trained anyone. Students here always carried their family names with pride, the size of a palace, yet their skills were barely decent. But somehow, what started as a pretense turned into something else. Anna was different. Behind every sparring session, she paid attention to everything I said, even during our arguments. She had this determined spirit—borderline stubborn—that didn’t know when to stop.“So, Dimitri and Victoria are looking for a safe path into Nightshade?” Anna asked. I wasn’t supposed to tell her, but she wouldn’t believe me otherwise. Better she knows—so she’ll eventually yield to me. “That’s right.”Our blades clashed, and Anna took a few steps back. “Victoria’s your cousin,” she said sharply. “Why are you against her?” “She could easily get rid of me and Gabriel—and you, too.” I moved forward, trying to press my attack. “Wo

  • Tied to the Ruthless Three   46. The Missing Girl

"Did you hear the rumor that Marva's gone missing?" Isolde whispered.I didn’t answer, but I already knew. The rumor said that Marva had tried to escape from Bastorin. Did they just let her go? That can’t be right. Someone like her could easily be found.Something’s not right. My gut tells me so.After everything that’s happened, I can’t shake the feeling that Alexei knows something—maybe he’s even involved.I know I should ignore it. I promised myself I would focus on my goal. But my conscience is screaming at me. What I hate most about myself is the kindness I inherited from my mother."Don't do anything stupid," Isolde warned, as if she could read my mind.I only stared at her in silence."Enough, Anna. If you start digging, everything will fall apart. Please, I’m begging you…” Isolde sighed. "It's better to close your eyes and ears. And your lips, too.”"Okay," I shrugged.I wasn’t planning to investigate anything. Not really. I'd rather confront Alexei directly; he must know the

  • Tied to the Ruthless Three   45. The Shadow Behind Bastorin

ALEXEI POVI stared at the file on the table—the same one Anna had read—and secured it. I felt careless. Had Anna found out about the file I’d hidden? Where did she get this information?Of all the students I suspected, only one name came to mind: Marva.I’ve heard that her father’s in trouble. The question is, where does her loyalty lie? Most likely, Marva was trying to get help from Anna.I heard the front door being knocked on and saw a shadow behind it. The door opened, and my right hand walked in. Yuri placed a tray with a covered dish on the dining table. He bowed slightly when he faced me."Sir Alexei, your dinner," he said."Later. I don't have an appetite." My eyes stayed fixed on the file. "Leave, Yuri."Without saying much, Yuri started toward the door, but something suddenly crossed my mind.“Yuri, wait.” He stopped and turned around. "I need to speak with Marva. Bring her to my office after dinner.”"Yes, sir."I leaned back on the couch and exhaled a heavy breath. Me? Ti
