Estelle's POV

"Hold still, child. This is the last one."

The whip came down on my back again. I bit my lip so hard I tasted blood. I did not scream. I stopped screaming in my first year here.

Sister Agatha lowered the whip and smiled at me. It was the same sweet smile she wore every Sunday in church.

"Estelle, darling," she said softly. "Your family sent you to us so we could teach you God's love and bring a sinner like you back to the right path."

My back was wet. I didn't need to look to know it was blood. The old cuts from last week had opened again.

She leaned close to my ear.

"Your family is here to take you home today. I trust you will keep your mouth shut about what happened inside these walls." She tapped my cheek. "Remember, child. God sees everything. God hears everything."

Then she pushed me out of the small stone room and shut the door behind me.

I stood in the hallway, shaking. Three years. Three years in Holy Rose Convent. And it was finally over.

I pulled my old grey dress tighter around my shoulders, so no one would see the blood soaking through, and walked to the front gate.

A shiny black car was parked outside. A tall man in an expensive suit leaned against it, looking at his watch.

Cassius. My older brother.

He looked up and frowned at me.

"Three years in a convent, and you still walk like you're angry at the whole world," he said. "Come on. Get in. We're going home."

I didn't move.

Home. The word felt strange in my mouth.

---

*Four years ago...*

"Cassius! You're back!"

I ran down the stairs of the Silverthorn mansion so fast I almost tripped. I had only been living there for two months. Two months since they found me in a small village and told me I was their real daughter.

Cassius came through the front door with his briefcase, looking tired.

"How was work?" I asked, taking his bag from his hand. "Mom said you've been so busy. I made you tea. Here, sit down, let me help you take off your coat."

He laughed and patted my head. "You're like my little shadow, you know that?"

I smiled so wide my cheeks hurt. I wanted him to love me. I wanted all of them to love me.

---

*Present...*

"Estelle." Cassius snapped his fingers in front of my face. "Are you mad at me or something? I skipped a big business meeting in Paris to come get you myself. Mom and Dad are waiting. They planned a whole welcome home dinner for you."

I looked at him. The brother I used to run to. The brother who never once came to visit me here.

"Mom and Dad are dead to me," I said.

His face twisted. "What are you talking about? You're my sister. You're a Silverthorn."

"No," I said. "You all only ever cared about Delilah. The girl you raised in my place. I'm just the village girl you found too late. The one nobody really wanted."

Cassius rolled his eyes. "Are you done? Stop crying like a child."

He stepped closer. His voice went cold.

"Three years ago, you put poison in Lilith's drink at your own birthday party. Your best friend, Estelle. She's still lying in a hospital bed. She still hasn't opened her eyes. Do you know what Dad had to do to keep you out of prison? You got off easy."

He ran his hand through his hair and laughed without any joy.

"God, I really thought the nuns would fix you. You think this is finished just because you walked out of that gate? Every day Lilith spends in that hospital is a day you should be on your knees saying sorry."

My chest went tight. And just like that, I was back in that night again.

---

*Three years ago...*

"Lilith! Lilith, wake up!"

Lilith was on the floor of the ballroom. Her face was pale. Her lips were turning blue. Her glass of juice had rolled away from her hand and spilled across the white marble.

People were screaming. Someone was calling an ambulance.

My father pushed through the crowd. Benedict Silverthorn. He picked up the glass, smelled it, and turned to me with eyes full of rage.

"Poison," he said. "Someone put poison in her drink. And you were the one who gave it to her."

"I just brought it to her, Dad! I didn't put anything in it!" I cried. "Delilah poured it. Delilah handed it to me and told me to give it to Lilith!"

Behind him, Delilah covered her mouth with her hand. Tears filled her big, innocent eyes.

"Estelle," she whispered. "How can you say that about me?"

My mother, Pandora, ran to Delilah and held her close, like she was the one who needed protecting.

And my father raised his hand and slapped me so hard I fell to the floor.

"Shut up, you liar!" he shouted. "I wish we had never found you. I wish you had never been born."

That was the night I learned the truth. My family never loved me. Not really. Not ever.

---

*Present...*

"I should have stayed in that village," I whispered.

Cassius opened the car door and pointed inside.

"Time to go home, Estelle. Don't make me tell you again."

I looked at the car. I thought of my mother's cold eyes. My father's heavy hand. Delilah's fake tears.

Then I turned around and started walking down the dusty road, away from the car.

"Estelle!" he shouted. "Where do you think you're going?"

I didn't stop. I didn't look back.

"I'm never going back to that house," I said. "Have a good life, Mr. Silverthorn. I hope I never see any of you again."

My back was burning. My legs were weak. I had no money and nowhere to go.

But for the first time in three years, I was free.

Estelle's POV"Master Cassius? Shouldn't you be inside at the party?"Aunt Ruth stepped in front of me as Cassius came running up to the back gate. But he didn't even look at her."Stop right there, Estelle."I kept walking."Are you deaf?" he shouted. "I said stop! Where do you think you're going?"He grabbed my arm and yanked me back through the gate."Let go of me.""It's always something with you, isn't it?" His fingers squeezed tighter. "First you turn Delilah's birthday into a circus, and now you're trying to sneak out the back gate in the middle of the night like a thief? Stop acting like a child and get back inside.""I'm never going back in there.""Careful, Master Cassius!" Aunt Ruth cried. "Her back! She's hurt!"But Cassius only pulled harder."Come on," he said, and his voice changed a little. It wasn't as hard anymore. "You can't go out alone this late. It's dark. It's not safe out there.""Just let go of me!"I twisted my arm, trying to pull free. He grabbed my other sh

Estelle's POV"Miss Silverthorn. I saw everything that happened in there. And I believe you."I stopped at the bottom of the front steps.A tall man stood beside the fountain under the fairy lights. He wore a dark suit with no tie, and his black hair was pushed back from his face. He was holding his invitation card, and he looked at me like he could see straight through every lie in that house.I knew who he was. Everybody in Crestwood City knew who he was.Jude Sterling. The youngest billionaire in the country. His face was on the cover of every business magazine."No need, Mr. Big Shot," I said. "You don't have to pretend to be nice to me. I know I'm not worth your time."He opened his mouth to answer, but I was already walking away."Miss Estelle! Miss Estelle, wait!"A short, round woman in a maid's uniform came hurrying around the side of the house, wiping her hands on her apron.Aunt Ruth. She was the cook. Estelle's POV"Fine. If you won't answer, I'll answer for you."I turned so everyone in the hall could hear me."You're scared because you already know I didn't touch that necklace," I said. "When we got here, Cassius carried that blue box into the house himself. It was closed. It was perfect. He never let it out of his hand."Cassius's fingers tightened around the box."Then he went upstairs and gave it to Delilah before the party," I went on. "And suddenly, like magic, the chain is broken and the diamond is gone. The moment it touched her hands."I let that hang in the air."I think everybody here can do the math."Whispers rolled across the room. A few guests who had been heading for the door stopped and turned back around."So the problem isn't the video," I said, looking straight at my family. "The problem is that you're scared to watch it. Because deep down, you know Delilah broke her own necklace. And you just want me to take the blame for her. Again."Then I looked at Delilah.

Estelle's POV"You think I wanted this?"I turned back around to face Cassius. My whole body was shaking now."You think I wanted to bleed all over my grandmother's dress? In front of all these people? Just so you could shout at me and call me a liar?" I shook my head slowly. "Do you really think I have so little respect for myself?"Cassius opened his mouth. Nothing came out. His eyes kept going back to the red stain on my dress."Estelle..." My mother's voice trembled. "Sweetheart, what happened to your back? Who did this to you?""Ask the convent you sent me to," I said. Her face went white. But before she could say another word, Delilah pushed herself up from the floor, holding her arm, and limped toward me."Estelle, does it hurt very much?" Her voice was soft and sweet like honey. Tears shone in her eyes. "Oh, I'm so, so sorry. I didn't mean it. I was just having a terrible day, that's all. Someone ruined the birthday gift Cassius got for me, and I was so upset I couldn't think

Estelle's POV"Mom! Mom, it hurts so much! Ow!"Delilah lay on the marble floor at the bottom of the staircase, crying like a little child. Her tiara had slipped sideways in her hair. Her pink gown was spread around her like flower petals. And I was lying right beside her.It happened so fast. One second, my mother was holding my wrist by the front doors. The next, Delilah came tumbling down the last steps, and instead of rolling to the floor, she twisted her body and crashed straight into me. Her shoulder hit me hard. I flew backward and landed flat on my back on the cold marble.Pain exploded across my skin. White, hot, burning pain. Every cut Sister Agatha had given me this morning tore open at once.I bit down on my lip so I wouldn't scream."Oh, my baby! My poor baby!" My mother dropped to her knees beside Delilah and pulled her into her arms. She didn't even look at me. "Where does it hurt? Do you have a boo-boo? Show Mommy.""My ankle," Delilah sobbed. "And my arm. It hurts so

Estelle's POV"Stop lying!"Cassius's voice cracked across the hall like a whip. He stepped between me and our mother before she could answer Dad's question."I know you're angry because we ignored you," he said, pointing his finger in my face. "But if you had a problem, it was your job to tell us. Not to keep quiet for years and then explode in front of the whole city!""Cassius..." my mother whispered."No, Mom. Somebody has to say it." He turned back to me. "You're jealous. That's all this is. You're jealous that Delilah had a better life than you. That's why you bullied her before, and that's why you're trying to throw all the blame on her now."I didn't say anything. I just watched him."Did you ever stop for one second and think about doing the right thing?" he shouted. "No! You just keep punishing us for your own bad luck. You are the worst person I have ever met.""Cassius, don't talk about your sister like that," my mother said, reaching for his arm.He shook her off."Mom, s
