Estelle's POV

"Mom and Dad have been so worried about you these past three years."

Cassius said it without looking at me. His eyes were on his phone as the car rolled through the city.

"So be nice when we get home, okay? Control your temper. And stop picking on Delilah. She's been through enough. Don't make our lives harder than they already are." He finally glanced at me. "Keep your head down, and nobody will treat you any differently. Understand?"

I looked out of the window. Tall buildings. Busy streets. People laughing at a coffee shop. Life had kept going without me.

"Estelle. Are you even listening? I'm talking to you."

I turned to face him.

"Three years," I said quietly. "I spent three years in that convent. And not one of you came to see me. Not once."

He sighed like I was being difficult.

"Not on my birthday. Not at Christmas. Not at Easter. Nothing." My voice shook, but I kept going. "The convent is only two hours away, Cassius. Two hours. They couldn't spare one afternoon to see their own daughter? And you still think they care about me?"

"This is exactly what I mean," he snapped. "You act like a child. They stayed away on purpose. They wanted to give you time to think about what you did. Time to heal and become a better person. Everything they did was for your own good, Estelle."

For my own good.

I almost laughed. My back was still bleeding under my dress, and he was telling me it was for my own good.

---

The car stopped in front of the Silverthorn mansion.

It looked exactly the same. White walls. Tall windows. A fountain in the front with a stone angel pouring water from a jar. Fairy lights hung over the garden for the party tonight.

Cassius reached into the back seat and grabbed a small blue gift box tied with a silver ribbon.

For one stupid second, my heart jumped. A welcome home gift?

I reached for it.

He pulled it back.

"Oh, that's for Delilah," he said. "She's been feeling sad all week."

Of course it was.

He climbed out of the car and fixed his tie. "Go change into something nice. I'll see you in the banquet hall."

He walked inside without waiting for me.

---

I didn't go through the front door. I went around the side of the house, past the kitchen, to the small storage room at the very back.

Home, sweet home.

This was where the Silverthorns let me sleep for the whole year I lived here before they sent me away. A tiny room with no window. A thin bed squeezed between old boxes and broken chairs. It still smelled like dust and floor soap.

Delilah's bedroom was upstairs. It had a balcony and a pink chandelier.

I sat down on the narrow bed.

*Change into something nice.*

As if I owned anything nice. Everything I had ever worn in this house was either Delilah's old clothes or the plain uniform they gave the maids.

---

*Four years ago...*

"Mom! Dad! Look!"

I came running into the living room in a yellow dress with tiny white flowers on it. My grandmother had sewn it for me by hand in the village, the week before the Silverthorns came to take me. It was the most beautiful thing I owned.

I wanted to wear it to my first dinner with my real family.

My mother, Pandora, looked up from the sofa. Her face twisted like she had smelled something rotten.

"Estelle, what on earth are you wearing?"

I looked down at my dress. "Grandma made it for me. Isn't it pretty?"

"You are a Silverthorn now," she said sharply. "You cannot walk around looking like a farm girl. What will people say? Learn how to dress properly. Like Delilah."

Delilah sat beside her in a soft cream dress that probably cost more than my whole village. She gave me a small, sweet smile.

"Now take that off," my mother said. "And throw it away."

That night, I didn't throw it away. I folded it very small and hid it at the bottom of an old box in the storage room.

---

*Present...*

I was their real daughter. Their blood. But they never cared about me.

Delilah wasn't even theirs. She was the baby the hospital gave them by mistake. And still, she was their pride and their joy. Their princess.

Me? I was the embarrassing secret they dragged out of a village.

The one they blamed for Delilah's crime.

*"I wish you had never been born!"*

*"It wasn't me, Dad! It was Delilah!"*

The one they locked away in that convent to be beaten and starved for three years.

I knelt down and pulled the old box out from under the bed. I dug through dusty papers and broken picture frames until my fingers touched soft cotton.

The yellow dress.

It was faded now. A little wrinkled. But the tiny white flowers were still there.

This was what I was wearing the day they brought me into this house.

So this is what I'll wear the day I leave them for good.

Estelle's POV"Master Cassius? Shouldn't you be inside at the party?"Aunt Ruth stepped in front of me as Cassius came running up to the back gate. But he didn't even look at her."Stop right there, Estelle."I kept walking."Are you deaf?" he shouted. "I said stop! Where do you think you're going?"He grabbed my arm and yanked me back through the gate."Let go of me.""It's always something with you, isn't it?" His fingers squeezed tighter. "First you turn Delilah's birthday into a circus, and now you're trying to sneak out the back gate in the middle of the night like a thief? Stop acting like a child and get back inside.""I'm never going back in there.""Careful, Master Cassius!" Aunt Ruth cried. "Her back! She's hurt!"But Cassius only pulled harder."Come on," he said, and his voice changed a little. It wasn't as hard anymore. "You can't go out alone this late. It's dark. It's not safe out there.""Just let go of me!"I twisted my arm, trying to pull free. He grabbed my other sh

Estelle's POV"Miss Silverthorn. I saw everything that happened in there. And I believe you."I stopped at the bottom of the front steps.A tall man stood beside the fountain under the fairy lights. He wore a dark suit with no tie, and his black hair was pushed back from his face. He was holding his invitation card, and he looked at me like he could see straight through every lie in that house.I knew who he was. Everybody in Crestwood City knew who he was.Jude Sterling. The youngest billionaire in the country. His face was on the cover of every business magazine."No need, Mr. Big Shot," I said. "You don't have to pretend to be nice to me. I know I'm not worth your time."He opened his mouth to answer, but I was already walking away."Miss Estelle! Miss Estelle, wait!"A short, round woman in a maid's uniform came hurrying around the side of the house, wiping her hands on her apron.Aunt Ruth. She was the cook. Estelle's POV"Fine. If you won't answer, I'll answer for you."I turned so everyone in the hall could hear me."You're scared because you already know I didn't touch that necklace," I said. "When we got here, Cassius carried that blue box into the house himself. It was closed. It was perfect. He never let it out of his hand."Cassius's fingers tightened around the box."Then he went upstairs and gave it to Delilah before the party," I went on. "And suddenly, like magic, the chain is broken and the diamond is gone. The moment it touched her hands."I let that hang in the air."I think everybody here can do the math."Whispers rolled across the room. A few guests who had been heading for the door stopped and turned back around."So the problem isn't the video," I said, looking straight at my family. "The problem is that you're scared to watch it. Because deep down, you know Delilah broke her own necklace. And you just want me to take the blame for her. Again."Then I looked at Delilah.

Estelle's POV"You think I wanted this?"I turned back around to face Cassius. My whole body was shaking now."You think I wanted to bleed all over my grandmother's dress? In front of all these people? Just so you could shout at me and call me a liar?" I shook my head slowly. "Do you really think I have so little respect for myself?"Cassius opened his mouth. Nothing came out. His eyes kept going back to the red stain on my dress."Estelle..." My mother's voice trembled. "Sweetheart, what happened to your back? Who did this to you?""Ask the convent you sent me to," I said. Her face went white. But before she could say another word, Delilah pushed herself up from the floor, holding her arm, and limped toward me."Estelle, does it hurt very much?" Her voice was soft and sweet like honey. Tears shone in her eyes. "Oh, I'm so, so sorry. I didn't mean it. I was just having a terrible day, that's all. Someone ruined the birthday gift Cassius got for me, and I was so upset I couldn't think

Estelle's POV"Mom! Mom, it hurts so much! Ow!"Delilah lay on the marble floor at the bottom of the staircase, crying like a little child. Her tiara had slipped sideways in her hair. Her pink gown was spread around her like flower petals. And I was lying right beside her.It happened so fast. One second, my mother was holding my wrist by the front doors. The next, Delilah came tumbling down the last steps, and instead of rolling to the floor, she twisted her body and crashed straight into me. Her shoulder hit me hard. I flew backward and landed flat on my back on the cold marble.Pain exploded across my skin. White, hot, burning pain. Every cut Sister Agatha had given me this morning tore open at once.I bit down on my lip so I wouldn't scream."Oh, my baby! My poor baby!" My mother dropped to her knees beside Delilah and pulled her into her arms. She didn't even look at me. "Where does it hurt? Do you have a boo-boo? Show Mommy.""My ankle," Delilah sobbed. "And my arm. It hurts so

Estelle's POV"Stop lying!"Cassius's voice cracked across the hall like a whip. He stepped between me and our mother before she could answer Dad's question."I know you're angry because we ignored you," he said, pointing his finger in my face. "But if you had a problem, it was your job to tell us. Not to keep quiet for years and then explode in front of the whole city!""Cassius..." my mother whispered."No, Mom. Somebody has to say it." He turned back to me. "You're jealous. That's all this is. You're jealous that Delilah had a better life than you. That's why you bullied her before, and that's why you're trying to throw all the blame on her now."I didn't say anything. I just watched him."Did you ever stop for one second and think about doing the right thing?" he shouted. "No! You just keep punishing us for your own bad luck. You are the worst person I have ever met.""Cassius, don't talk about your sister like that," my mother said, reaching for his arm.He shook her off."Mom, s
