Estelle's POV

"Congratulations, Benedict! What a wonderful night for the Silverthorn family."

"Thank you, thank you. It truly is."

The banquet hall glowed with golden light. Crystal glasses clinked. Soft violin music floated through the air. Rich men in black suits and women in shining gowns laughed and sipped champagne under the giant chandelier.

"So where is our special girl tonight?" a woman in a green gown asked my mother.

Pandora smiled proudly. "She'll be down in just a minute."

I stood at the side door and stepped inside.

The music didn't stop. But the talking did.

One by one, heads turned toward me. Toward my faded yellow dress with the little white flowers. Toward my thin arms, my dusty shoes, my hair tied back with a piece of string.

"Who is that girl?" someone whispered.

"Is she one of the maids?"

"Why is she wearing that old thing to a party like this?"

"Wait... isn't that the daughter? The one who poisoned her friend?"

I kept my chin up.

Three years ago, in this very hall, my family let the police drag me out in front of every important person in Crestwood City. Like I was a criminal. Like I was trash.

And now, their idea of welcoming me home was to throw a party and put me on display again. So everyone could stare. So everyone could remember what I "did."

Nobody in this family ever cared about my feelings. Or my dignity.

---

"Estelle."

Cassius was beside me in two long steps. He grabbed my arm and squeezed hard. I flinched as pain shot through the cuts on my back.

"What are you wearing?" he hissed. "I told you to put on something nice."

"I heard you," I said.

"You've had an attitude since the moment I picked you up. And now this?" He pointed at my dress. "You're trying to make everyone feel sorry for you. You're trying to make us look bad. People will think we treat you like a dog!"

You did, I thought. You did treat me like a dog.

My father walked over with a glass of wine in his hand. Benedict Silverthorn. Tall, grey-haired, and cold as ice. His eyes moved down my dress and filled with disgust.

"Estelle Silverthorn," he said, low enough that only we could hear. "Three years, and you haven't changed one bit. You're still selfish. Still proud. Still a spoiled, foolish child."

"Go upstairs and change," Cassius snapped. "Right now. Stop embarrassing us."

"I don't have a dress," I said.

My father frowned. "Then why didn't you buy one?"

"Because I don't have any money!"

My voice came out louder than I meant. A few guests nearby turned to look.

My father's face went red. He put his glass down on a passing tray.

"Don't lie to me, Estelle. The whole year you lived in this house, and every month while you were at that convent, I sent you money. Five thousand dollars, every single month. For four years." He leaned closer. "That is almost a quarter of a million dollars. And you couldn't buy one decent dress with that?"

My mouth fell open.

"Instead you show up looking like a beggar, to shame us in front of our guests," he went on. "Enough is enough. We have done more than enough for you. Don't bite the hand that feeds you."

"Five thousand dollars?" I stared at him. "Dad, I never got five dollars from you. Not once."

His jaw tightened.

"If you're going to shout at me for something I didn't do," I said, "at least make up a lie people can believe."

The people around us had gone completely quiet now. Even the violin player had slowed down.

My father's eyes went hard as stone.

"Fine," he said. "If you want to keep telling lies, don't blame me when I show everyone the truth."

He turned and raised his hand.

"Salome!"

A neat woman in a grey suit hurried over from the corner of the room, holding a tablet. Salome. She had managed the Silverthorn family's money for as long as anyone could remember.

"Yes, Mr. Silverthorn?"

"Check how much money has been sent to Estelle over the past four years. Every transfer. Read it out loud."

Salome blinked. "Estelle? Miss Estelle Silverthorn?"

"Yes. Who else?"

She didn't even look down at her tablet.

"Sir... if it's Miss Estelle, there's no need to check."

My father frowned. "What do you mean?"

Salome swallowed and glanced at my mother. Then at someone behind me. Then back at my father.

"Mr. Silverthorn," she said slowly, "every month, the money for Miss Estelle was sent to a bank account Miss Delilah gave us. It was never in Miss Estelle's name. Not even once."

The whole room went still.

My father stared at her.

"What did you just say?"

Estelle's POV"Master Cassius? Shouldn't you be inside at the party?"Aunt Ruth stepped in front of me as Cassius came running up to the back gate. But he didn't even look at her."Stop right there, Estelle."I kept walking."Are you deaf?" he shouted. "I said stop! Where do you think you're going?"He grabbed my arm and yanked me back through the gate."Let go of me.""It's always something with you, isn't it?" His fingers squeezed tighter. "First you turn Delilah's birthday into a circus, and now you're trying to sneak out the back gate in the middle of the night like a thief? Stop acting like a child and get back inside.""I'm never going back in there.""Careful, Master Cassius!" Aunt Ruth cried. "Her back! She's hurt!"But Cassius only pulled harder."Come on," he said, and his voice changed a little. It wasn't as hard anymore. "You can't go out alone this late. It's dark. It's not safe out there.""Just let go of me!"I twisted my arm, trying to pull free. He grabbed my other sh

Estelle's POV"Miss Silverthorn. I saw everything that happened in there. And I believe you."I stopped at the bottom of the front steps.A tall man stood beside the fountain under the fairy lights. He wore a dark suit with no tie, and his black hair was pushed back from his face. He was holding his invitation card, and he looked at me like he could see straight through every lie in that house.I knew who he was. Everybody in Crestwood City knew who he was.Jude Sterling. The youngest billionaire in the country. His face was on the cover of every business magazine."No need, Mr. Big Shot," I said. "You don't have to pretend to be nice to me. I know I'm not worth your time."He opened his mouth to answer, but I was already walking away."Miss Estelle! Miss Estelle, wait!"A short, round woman in a maid's uniform came hurrying around the side of the house, wiping her hands on her apron.Aunt Ruth. She was the cook. And she was the only person in that whole house who had ever been kind t

Estelle's POV"Fine. If you won't answer, I'll answer for you."I turned so everyone in the hall could hear me."You're scared because you already know I didn't touch that necklace," I said. "When we got here, Cassius carried that blue box into the house himself. It was closed. It was perfect. He never let it out of his hand."Cassius's fingers tightened around the box."Then he went upstairs and gave it to Delilah before the party," I went on. "And suddenly, like magic, the chain is broken and the diamond is gone. The moment it touched her hands."I let that hang in the air."I think everybody here can do the math."Whispers rolled across the room. A few guests who had been heading for the door stopped and turned back around."So the problem isn't the video," I said, looking straight at my family. "The problem is that you're scared to watch it. Because deep down, you know Delilah broke her own necklace. And you just want me to take the blame for her. Again."Then I looked at Delilah.

Estelle's POV"You think I wanted this?"I turned back around to face Cassius. My whole body was shaking now."You think I wanted to bleed all over my grandmother's dress? In front of all these people? Just so you could shout at me and call me a liar?" I shook my head slowly. "Do you really think I have so little respect for myself?"Cassius opened his mouth. Nothing came out. His eyes kept going back to the red stain on my dress."Estelle..." My mother's voice trembled. "Sweetheart, what happened to your back? Who did this to you?""Ask the convent you sent me to," I said. Her face went white. But before she could say another word, Delilah pushed herself up from the floor, holding her arm, and limped toward me."Estelle, does it hurt very much?" Her voice was soft and sweet like honey. Tears shone in her eyes. "Oh, I'm so, so sorry. I didn't mean it. I was just having a terrible day, that's all. Someone ruined the birthday gift Cassius got for me, and I was so upset I couldn't think

Estelle's POV"Mom! Mom, it hurts so much! Ow!"Delilah lay on the marble floor at the bottom of the staircase, crying like a little child. Her tiara had slipped sideways in her hair. Her pink gown was spread around her like flower petals. And I was lying right beside her.It happened so fast. One second, my mother was holding my wrist by the front doors. The next, Delilah came tumbling down the last steps, and instead of rolling to the floor, she twisted her body and crashed straight into me. Her shoulder hit me hard. I flew backward and landed flat on my back on the cold marble.Pain exploded across my skin. White, hot, burning pain. Every cut Sister Agatha had given me this morning tore open at once.I bit down on my lip so I wouldn't scream."Oh, my baby! My poor baby!" My mother dropped to her knees beside Delilah and pulled her into her arms. She didn't even look at me. "Where does it hurt? Do you have a boo-boo? Show Mommy.""My ankle," Delilah sobbed. "And my arm. It hurts so

Estelle's POV"Stop lying!"Cassius's voice cracked across the hall like a whip. He stepped between me and our mother before she could answer Dad's question."I know you're angry because we ignored you," he said, pointing his finger in my face. "But if you had a problem, it was your job to tell us. Not to keep quiet for years and then explode in front of the whole city!""Cassius..." my mother whispered."No, Mom. Somebody has to say it." He turned back to me. "You're jealous. That's all this is. You're jealous that Delilah had a better life than you. That's why you bullied her before, and that's why you're trying to throw all the blame on her now."I didn't say anything. I just watched him."Did you ever stop for one second and think about doing the right thing?" he shouted. "No! You just keep punishing us for your own bad luck. You are the worst person I have ever met.""Cassius, don't talk about your sister like that," my mother said, reaching for his arm.He shook her off."Mom, s
