Estelle's POV

"You have a mouth, don't you? And a brain?"

My mother blinked at me, confused. "No, honey, I didn't mean..."

"I'm not talking to you, Mom." Cassius stepped forward, his arms crossed. He looked at me like I was a stain on his white shirt. "Estelle, you have a mouth and a brain. If you needed money, you could have just asked."

"Cassius is right," my mother said quickly, holding onto his arm. "You should have said something, sweetheart."

"We have billions," Cassius went on. "Do you honestly think we're so heartless that we wouldn't give you a little cash if you needed it?"

I looked at him for a long moment.

"I did ask," I said. "You just didn't care enough to listen."

---

*Three and a half years ago...*

"Mom? Dad? Can I have two hundred dollars?"

I stood at the door of the dining room, holding a crumpled paper in my hand. My whole family was having dinner. Nobody had called me to the table.

"It's for school," I said. "It's the registration f*e for the National Math Olympiad. My teacher says I have a real chance to win. But I have to pay by Friday."

My father didn't even look up from his steak.

"Money," he muttered. "It's always money with you."

Cassius laughed and put down his fork.

"You know what I think?" he said. "I think you only came here because we're rich. If we were poor, you would have stayed in your little village."

I squeezed the paper tighter.

"Honestly," Cassius said, "sometimes I wonder why Mom and Dad even brought you back."

"Look at Delilah," my mother said, smiling at the girl beside her. "She never asks us for money. And she just entered the National Math Olympiad too. She came tenth in the whole state! Why can't you be more like her?"

Delilah lowered her eyes shyly. "Mom, stop. It's nothing."

I swallowed hard.

Two months later, I found the money myself. I washed dishes at a restaurant every weekend, until my hands were cracked and red. I paid the f*e. I took the test.

And I won.

---

*Three years ago...*

"I came first," I said.

I stood in the living room holding a gold medal on a blue ribbon. My hands were shaking with excitement. "In the whole country. First place. In the National Math Olympiad."

Nobody said anything.

Then Cassius snorted. "Yeah. Sure you did."

"What? I really did! Look, here's the medal!"

But Delilah had already jumped up from the sofa and wrapped her arms around Cassius.

"Cassius! You promised you would get me something if I placed in the Olympiad. Remember?"

He smiled down at her, soft and warm. He never smiled at me like that.

"I remember. What do you want, princess?"

"There's this diamond bracelet I've been looking at." She bit her lip. "But it's ten thousand dollars. Is that too much?"

"Ten thousand?" He laughed and kissed the top of her head. "If it makes my baby sister happy, it could be a hundred thousand. I don't care."

Then he turned to me. The smile disappeared.

"Why are you still standing there? Go to your room and think about why you keep lying."

As I walked away, my medal hanging from my hand, I heard my father's voice.

"That girl is out of control. If only she had half of Delilah's manners."

---

*Present...*

"Remember that?" I asked. "Remember the medal?"

Cassius's face turned red. "That's because you never did anything we could be proud of! And you were always a liar!"

"I never lied," I said. "Not once. I came first in the Olympiad. You just didn't want to believe me."

"Whatever," he muttered.

"You didn't even know what school I went to," I said. "So why would you care if I won a math competition?"

Cassius frowned.

"What are you talking about? You went to Kingsley Academy. With Delilah."

I said nothing.

He turned to our father. "Dad? She went to Kingsley Academy, right? That's what you told me."

My father's mouth opened. Then closed. He looked at my mother. My mother looked at the floor.

Slowly, Cassius turned back to me. For the first time all night, his voice was quiet.

"Estelle," he said. "What school did you go to?"

Estelle's POV"Master Cassius? Shouldn't you be inside at the party?"Aunt Ruth stepped in front of me as Cassius came running up to the back gate. But he didn't even look at her."Stop right there, Estelle."I kept walking."Are you deaf?" he shouted. "I said stop! Where do you think you're going?"He grabbed my arm and yanked me back through the gate."Let go of me.""It's always something with you, isn't it?" His fingers squeezed tighter. "First you turn Delilah's birthday into a circus, and now you're trying to sneak out the back gate in the middle of the night like a thief? Stop acting like a child and get back inside.""I'm never going back in there.""Careful, Master Cassius!" Aunt Ruth cried. "Her back! She's hurt!"But Cassius only pulled harder."Come on," he said, and his voice changed a little. It wasn't as hard anymore. "You can't go out alone this late. It's dark. It's not safe out there.""Just let go of me!"I twisted my arm, trying to pull free. He grabbed my other sh

Estelle's POV"Miss Silverthorn. I saw everything that happened in there. And I believe you."I stopped at the bottom of the front steps.A tall man stood beside the fountain under the fairy lights. He wore a dark suit with no tie, and his black hair was pushed back from his face. He was holding his invitation card, and he looked at me like he could see straight through every lie in that house.I knew who he was. Everybody in Crestwood City knew who he was.Jude Sterling. The youngest billionaire in the country. His face was on the cover of every business magazine."No need, Mr. Big Shot," I said. "You don't have to pretend to be nice to me. I know I'm not worth your time."He opened his mouth to answer, but I was already walking away."Miss Estelle! Miss Estelle, wait!"A short, round woman in a maid's uniform came hurrying around the side of the house, wiping her hands on her apron.Aunt Ruth. She was the cook. And she was the only person in that whole house who had ever been kind t

Estelle's POV"Fine. If you won't answer, I'll answer for you."I turned so everyone in the hall could hear me."You're scared because you already know I didn't touch that necklace," I said. "When we got here, Cassius carried that blue box into the house himself. It was closed. It was perfect. He never let it out of his hand."Cassius's fingers tightened around the box."Then he went upstairs and gave it to Delilah before the party," I went on. "And suddenly, like magic, the chain is broken and the diamond is gone. The moment it touched her hands."I let that hang in the air."I think everybody here can do the math."Whispers rolled across the room. A few guests who had been heading for the door stopped and turned back around."So the problem isn't the video," I said, looking straight at my family. "The problem is that you're scared to watch it. Because deep down, you know Delilah broke her own necklace. And you just want me to take the blame for her. Again."Then I looked at Delilah.

Estelle's POV"You think I wanted this?"I turned back around to face Cassius. My whole body was shaking now."You think I wanted to bleed all over my grandmother's dress? In front of all these people? Just so you could shout at me and call me a liar?" I shook my head slowly. "Do you really think I have so little respect for myself?"Cassius opened his mouth. Nothing came out. His eyes kept going back to the red stain on my dress."Estelle..." My mother's voice trembled. "Sweetheart, what happened to your back? Who did this to you?""Ask the convent you sent me to," I said. Her face went white. But before she could say another word, Delilah pushed herself up from the floor, holding her arm, and limped toward me."Estelle, does it hurt very much?" Her voice was soft and sweet like honey. Tears shone in her eyes. "Oh, I'm so, so sorry. I didn't mean it. I was just having a terrible day, that's all. Someone ruined the birthday gift Cassius got for me, and I was so upset I couldn't think

Estelle's POV"Mom! Mom, it hurts so much! Ow!"Delilah lay on the marble floor at the bottom of the staircase, crying like a little child. Her tiara had slipped sideways in her hair. Her pink gown was spread around her like flower petals. And I was lying right beside her.It happened so fast. One second, my mother was holding my wrist by the front doors. The next, Delilah came tumbling down the last steps, and instead of rolling to the floor, she twisted her body and crashed straight into me. Her shoulder hit me hard. I flew backward and landed flat on my back on the cold marble.Pain exploded across my skin. White, hot, burning pain. Every cut Sister Agatha had given me this morning tore open at once.I bit down on my lip so I wouldn't scream."Oh, my baby! My poor baby!" My mother dropped to her knees beside Delilah and pulled her into her arms. She didn't even look at me. "Where does it hurt? Do you have a boo-boo? Show Mommy.""My ankle," Delilah sobbed. "And my arm. It hurts so

Estelle's POV"Stop lying!"Cassius's voice cracked across the hall like a whip. He stepped between me and our mother before she could answer Dad's question."I know you're angry because we ignored you," he said, pointing his finger in my face. "But if you had a problem, it was your job to tell us. Not to keep quiet for years and then explode in front of the whole city!""Cassius..." my mother whispered."No, Mom. Somebody has to say it." He turned back to me. "You're jealous. That's all this is. You're jealous that Delilah had a better life than you. That's why you bullied her before, and that's why you're trying to throw all the blame on her now."I didn't say anything. I just watched him."Did you ever stop for one second and think about doing the right thing?" he shouted. "No! You just keep punishing us for your own bad luck. You are the worst person I have ever met.""Cassius, don't talk about your sister like that," my mother said, reaching for his arm.He shook her off."Mom, s
