Estelle's POV

"Mrs. Silverthorn gave us the instructions herself."

Salome said it quietly, but in that silent hall, every single person heard it.

My father turned slowly to look at my mother.

Salome held her tablet tighter and kept going. "When Miss Estelle first came home, Mrs. Silverthorn told us not to give her the money directly. She said Miss Estelle grew up in a poor village and might not know how to handle so much money. She was afraid Miss Estelle might waste it, or pick up bad habits from... from the people she grew up around."

My cheeks burned. The people I grew up around. My grandmother, who sewed my dress by hand. My neighbors, who shared their last cup of rice with me.

"So Mrs. Silverthorn told us to send Miss Estelle's allowance to Miss Delilah's account instead," Salome said. "Miss Delilah was supposed to keep it safe and give Miss Estelle whatever she needed."

She paused.

"And Mrs. Silverthorn also asked us to double Miss Delilah's own allowance. She was worried Miss Delilah would feel sad and left out now that the real daughter was back. So Miss Delilah has been getting ten thousand dollars a month, plus Miss Estelle's five thousand."

A woman in a blue gown gasped and covered her mouth.

"Benedict," an old man near the fountain said slowly, "please tell me you knew about this."

My father said nothing. His face had gone pale.

"Really?" someone else whispered, loud enough to carry. "The Silverthorns are billionaires, and their own daughter didn't get a single cent?"

"No wonder she's wearing that old dress."

---

Cassius stepped in front of me, his face tight.

"Fine," he said. "Maybe you didn't get anything from the family account. But Mom and Dad still would have given you something. Pocket money. Gifts. Something."

I looked straight into his eyes.

"They never gave me anything," I said. "Not one cent. Not one gift. Not even a birthday card."

He opened his mouth.

"Go ahead," I said. "Ask them. They're your parents. I'm sure you'll believe them over me."

Cassius turned around.

"Mom? Dad?" His voice was not so sure anymore. "How much did you give her?"

My father cleared his throat and looked down at the floor. "I... I thought she was getting money from the family account. So I didn't think..."

"Me too!" my mother said quickly. "I thought the account was taking care of everything!"

"But Mom," Cassius said, "Salome just said you were the one who..."

"I told them to give it to Delilah to keep for her!" my mother cried. "I thought Delilah was passing it to her!"

She rushed toward me in her long silver gown. Her eyes were wet. She reached for my hands.

"Estelle, sweetheart, why didn't you say anything? You should have told us you had no money. Mommy would have given you anything you wanted. All you had to do was ask."

I pulled my hands away.

Ask? I did ask. I asked for help the night Lilith fell. I asked them to believe me. I begged. And they sent me to a place where they beat me until I bled.

"Yes, yes," my mother said, wiping her eyes. "It's my fault. All my fault. I didn't see that you were struggling. But Estelle, listen to me. Mommy loves you just as much as she loves Delilah. Do you understand? Just as much."

Just as much.

I almost laughed.

"You're my mother," I said. My voice was calm. Too calm. "But you took what was supposed to be mine and gave it to Delilah."

The room was so quiet I could hear the fountain splashing outside.

"I'm your real daughter. Your own blood. And you didn't trust me with five thousand dollars. But Delilah? You gave her fifteen thousand dollars every month. All because you were afraid she might feel a little bit sad."

My mother's face crumpled.

"Are you really that scared of hurting her precious feelings," I asked, "that you never once stopped to think about mine?"

Estelle's POV"Master Cassius? Shouldn't you be inside at the party?"Aunt Ruth stepped in front of me as Cassius came running up to the back gate. But he didn't even look at her."Stop right there, Estelle."I kept walking."Are you deaf?" he shouted. "I said stop! Where do you think you're going?"He grabbed my arm and yanked me back through the gate."Let go of me.""It's always something with you, isn't it?" His fingers squeezed tighter. "First you turn Delilah's birthday into a circus, and now you're trying to sneak out the back gate in the middle of the night like a thief? Stop acting like a child and get back inside.""I'm never going back in there.""Careful, Master Cassius!" Aunt Ruth cried. "Her back! She's hurt!"But Cassius only pulled harder."Come on," he said, and his voice changed a little. It wasn't as hard anymore. "You can't go out alone this late. It's dark. It's not safe out there.""Just let go of me!"I twisted my arm, trying to pull free. He grabbed my other sh

Estelle's POV"Miss Silverthorn. I saw everything that happened in there. And I believe you."I stopped at the bottom of the front steps.A tall man stood beside the fountain under the fairy lights. He wore a dark suit with no tie, and his black hair was pushed back from his face. He was holding his invitation card, and he looked at me like he could see straight through every lie in that house.I knew who he was. Everybody in Crestwood City knew who he was.Jude Sterling. The youngest billionaire in the country. His face was on the cover of every business magazine."No need, Mr. Big Shot," I said. "You don't have to pretend to be nice to me. I know I'm not worth your time."He opened his mouth to answer, but I was already walking away."Miss Estelle! Miss Estelle, wait!"A short, round woman in a maid's uniform came hurrying around the side of the house, wiping her hands on her apron.Aunt Ruth. She was the cook. And she was the only person in that whole house who had ever been kind t

Estelle's POV"Fine. If you won't answer, I'll answer for you."I turned so everyone in the hall could hear me."You're scared because you already know I didn't touch that necklace," I said. "When we got here, Cassius carried that blue box into the house himself. It was closed. It was perfect. He never let it out of his hand."Cassius's fingers tightened around the box."Then he went upstairs and gave it to Delilah before the party," I went on. "And suddenly, like magic, the chain is broken and the diamond is gone. The moment it touched her hands."I let that hang in the air."I think everybody here can do the math."Whispers rolled across the room. A few guests who had been heading for the door stopped and turned back around."So the problem isn't the video," I said, looking straight at my family. "The problem is that you're scared to watch it. Because deep down, you know Delilah broke her own necklace. And you just want me to take the blame for her. Again."Then I looked at Delilah.

Estelle's POV"You think I wanted this?"I turned back around to face Cassius. My whole body was shaking now."You think I wanted to bleed all over my grandmother's dress? In front of all these people? Just so you could shout at me and call me a liar?" I shook my head slowly. "Do you really think I have so little respect for myself?"Cassius opened his mouth. Nothing came out. His eyes kept going back to the red stain on my dress."Estelle..." My mother's voice trembled. "Sweetheart, what happened to your back? Who did this to you?""Ask the convent you sent me to," I said. Her face went white. But before she could say another word, Delilah pushed herself up from the floor, holding her arm, and limped toward me."Estelle, does it hurt very much?" Her voice was soft and sweet like honey. Tears shone in her eyes. "Oh, I'm so, so sorry. I didn't mean it. I was just having a terrible day, that's all. Someone ruined the birthday gift Cassius got for me, and I was so upset I couldn't think

Estelle's POV"Mom! Mom, it hurts so much! Ow!"Delilah lay on the marble floor at the bottom of the staircase, crying like a little child. Her tiara had slipped sideways in her hair. Her pink gown was spread around her like flower petals. And I was lying right beside her.It happened so fast. One second, my mother was holding my wrist by the front doors. The next, Delilah came tumbling down the last steps, and instead of rolling to the floor, she twisted her body and crashed straight into me. Her shoulder hit me hard. I flew backward and landed flat on my back on the cold marble.Pain exploded across my skin. White, hot, burning pain. Every cut Sister Agatha had given me this morning tore open at once.I bit down on my lip so I wouldn't scream."Oh, my baby! My poor baby!" My mother dropped to her knees beside Delilah and pulled her into her arms. She didn't even look at me. "Where does it hurt? Do you have a boo-boo? Show Mommy.""My ankle," Delilah sobbed. "And my arm. It hurts so

Estelle's POV"Stop lying!"Cassius's voice cracked across the hall like a whip. He stepped between me and our mother before she could answer Dad's question."I know you're angry because we ignored you," he said, pointing his finger in my face. "But if you had a problem, it was your job to tell us. Not to keep quiet for years and then explode in front of the whole city!""Cassius..." my mother whispered."No, Mom. Somebody has to say it." He turned back to me. "You're jealous. That's all this is. You're jealous that Delilah had a better life than you. That's why you bullied her before, and that's why you're trying to throw all the blame on her now."I didn't say anything. I just watched him."Did you ever stop for one second and think about doing the right thing?" he shouted. "No! You just keep punishing us for your own bad luck. You are the worst person I have ever met.""Cassius, don't talk about your sister like that," my mother said, reaching for his arm.He shook her off."Mom, s
