By the time Serena reached her apartment, the roads were open again and the storm had moved far enough away that patches of blue were beginning to appear between the clouds. She dropped her bag beside the sofa and stood there for a moment, exhausted in a way that had very little to do with how little she’d slept.

She needed a shower, coffee and several uninterrupted hours in which nobody asked her a question she couldn’t answer.

Her phone rang before she managed any of those things.

Serena made it to Ellis Atelier at eight-thirty Tuesday morning. By eight-forty-seven, the twelve-page agreement was online.Tessa entered Serena’s office without knocking, phone already in her hand. One look at her face was enough for Serena to know this wasn’t another headline built from Saturday’s leak.“What happened?”“The account posted again.”Serena’s hand stilled over the file she’d been reading. Tessa crossed the room and placed the phone on the desk. “It’s the agreement.”For several seconds, Serena didn’t touch it. Then she picked up the phone. There were photographs of page after page, clear enough to read. The names at the top. The effective date. The term. Confidentiality. Exclusivity. Compensation. The rules she and Damian had negotiated before either of them understood what those rules would eventually fail to contain. Private language that had existed between two people was now being copied across the internet.Serena scrolled once. Then stopped. She didn’t need to r

Monday morning, Serena stood in her bedroom fastening the cuff of her blouse while her phone vibrated for the fourth time in less than ten minutes. She didn’t look at it.That was becoming easier, although not by much. She had spent the rest of Saturday inside after the anonymous account promised there was more to come. Sunday had been worse. Nothing new had been released, but the absence of another document hadn’t slowed anything down. There were enough photographs, payment records and unanswered questions already circulating to keep strangers occupied.By Sunday night, Serena had realized staying home was no longer helping. So when Claire called shortly after eight Monday morning and suggested she remain at the apartment until they knew what the anonymous account intended to release next, Serena refused.“I’ve been inside for two days.”“I know.”“And I’ve spent most of those two days reading things I shouldn’t be reading.”“That part wasn’t included in my advice.”Serena slipped on

By Saturday evening, the question beneath the original post had stopped being a question.Serena sat at the dining table with her laptop open in front of her and her phone facedown beside it. She had put it that way nearly twenty minutes ago after Claire told her, for the third time, to stop reading comments from strangers who knew nothing about her. It had not helped. The laptop was worse. One of the larger entertainment sites had picked up the story shortly after three. Another followed less than an hour later, then two financial gossip accounts, then several pages Serena had never heard of. The original post had given them enough to work with: her name, Damian’s name, payments made over nearly a year, and a cropped page proving there had been a private agreement between them. Everything the documents didn’t explain, the internet had supplied.DAMIAN TAYLOR’S SECRET MISTRESS?Serena stared at the headline until the words began to lose their shape. The article beneath it was careful

By nine Saturday morning, Damian Taylor and Cecilia Arden were no longer engaged. The statement appeared first through representatives for both families and was picked up almost immediately by the financial press. Serena saw it while standing barefoot in her kitchen, waiting for the coffee machine to finish.DAMIAN TAYLOR AND CECILIA ARDEN END ENGAGEMENTShe opened the article. The statement was brief. The decision had been mutual. Damian and Cecilia continued to hold one another in high regard. Both families remained committed to their existing business interests, and neither would be commenting further on a private matter.Serena read it once, then locked her phone and poured her coffee. Damian had done exactly what he’d told her he would do. Yesterday, that might have mattered more. Today, Serena refused to spend her Saturday morning thinking about him.By eleven, she was dressed and halfway through a late breakfast when her phone began vibrating across the kitchen counter. She gla

By Friday evening, Damian had stopped pretending Serena’s sudden professionalism was accidental. She hadn’t ignored him. That would have been easier to confront. Instead, she had removed every unnecessary reason for them to speak. A question about the November campaign went through Elena. Daniel handled the adjustment to her next development session. An email Damian sent regarding the revised campaign schedule received a perfectly courteous response confirming that the changes worked for her.Nothing personal. Nothing that invited another message.Three days earlier, Serena had stood in front of him at Street Nation and told him she was single but still not his. Now she was making certain he understood what that meant.Damian called Cecilia shortly after six. “Did you see Serena yesterday?”“Yes. At the Everhart walkthrough.”That was enough.“You told her.”“I told her the engagement ended, if that’s what you’re asking.”Damian leaned back in his chair. “What else?”“That we hadn’t a

Forty-eight hours became seventy-two.Not because Damian had changed his mind about Cecilia. By Thursday morning, it was already clear that ending the engagement wouldn’t destroy the Arden transaction. The problem was that Cecilia’s father no longer seemed interested in making the deal as easy as it had been before. The Ardens had reopened terms everyone had considered settled weeks ago. Nothing was impossible to work around, but each change meant another conversation, another revision and another opportunity for people outside the two families to notice that a transaction that had been moving smoothly was suddenly becoming difficult.“They sent their revisions this morning,” Malcolm said.Damian looked down at the pages on the conference table. “They want more.”“They’re calling it a reassessment.”“Of course they are.”Victor sat several seats away with his own copy. “Cecilia’s father is angry. He’s less willing to give Aella concessions he was comfortable giving when he believed ou
