Mom and I moved to the small southern town where Grandpa and Grandma lived, and we started a new chapter of our lives. After receiving treatment, Mom slowly recovered. A smile gradually returned to her face, replacing the weary, drawn expression that had defined her for so long.I transferred to a new school and made new friends. That day, Mom came to pick me up after school, as usual. She wore a light-colored dress. Her long hair fell over her shoulders, and a gentle smile lit up her face.I skipped over to her, took her hand, and we started walking home together.Just then, I happened to catch sight of a figure standing near the school gate.It was Dad.He stood by the roadside, so thin that he was almost unrecognizable. His cheeks were sunken, and his hair had turned completely white. The empty sleeve on his right side hung loose, swaying gently in the breeze. He looked like a shadow of his former self. His eyes were fixed on Mom and me.Clutched tightly in his hand was a

As soon as Grandpa returned home, he handed all the evidence over to the police.Jocelyn’s resolve finally crumbled. She confessed to everything at the police station. She admitted that she had deliberately seduced Dad into having an affair.Later, determined to take Mom’s place, she fabricated the entire story about being assaulted and suffering a miscarriage. She also confessed that years ago, she had accepted a bribe from one of Dad’s business enemies and revealed Mom’s whereabouts, setting in motion the nightmare that would haunt Mom for the rest of her life. The police investigation further revealed that the child Jocelyn had been carrying was never Dad’s.She had simply intended to use the pregnancy to keep Dad tied to her and secure greater benefits for herself. The news soon reached Dad.At the time, he was still consumed by remorse over Mom’s “death,” refusing to eat or drink day after day. When he learned the truth, he thought of all the years he had misunderstood an

It was not long before the police arrived again. The moment the thugs realized a life had been lost, panic set in.Terrified that they would be held responsible for her death, they ultimately decided to turn themselves in and confess everything. They admitted that Jocelyn had paid them to stage the assault and falsely accuse Mom of being the one who had orchestrated it.An officer approached Jocelyn, who was still pretending to be weak and crying.“Jocelyn Rowe, you’re suspected of making a false accusation and setting someone up. You’re coming with us.”Jocelyn completely panicked. Her face turned deathly pale as she struggled and cried out, “No! I didn’t do it! They’re lying! Jason, help me!”She desperately called out to Dad for help. Her eyes were filled with fear. However, Dad remained on the clinic floor. His eyes were vacant, and his expression was filled with despair. At the sight of this, Grandpa said coldly, “Get him out of here. I don’t want him anywhere near Wren.

The bloodstains on the ground were still there. When the wind blew, a faint metallic smell drifted through the air.Grandma’s legs went weak, and she nearly collapsed. Thankfully, Grandpa caught her in time.Grandpa looked at Dad. His tone was icy.“Back then, Wren cut ties with her family just to marry you. She went from a life of wealth and privilege to enduring hardship by your side. Did you know that?”Dad stood there, unable to say a single word. The disgust in Grandpa’s eyes deepened, and he slowly began to reveal part of Mom’s past that she had never told anyone.Back then, Mom and Dad had been university classmates. At the time, Dad’s family was struggling financially. He had even been close to dropping out because of his family’s debts.Mom saw what he was going through and could not bear to watch him struggle. She secretly paid off all his debts so he could focus on his studies.Later, the university offered a limited number of recommendations for graduate school. Mo

I leaned over the hallway railing. My heart tightened as if an icy hand had closed around it.Mom had jumped from the second floor. My whole body shook, and tears streamed uncontrollably down my face.Dad sprinted toward the landscaped area below, then stopped dead in his tracks. As I looked down from the upstairs railing, my vision blurred with tears. I could only make out a large pool of vivid red spreading across the ground. It was darker and more terrifying than the blood on Jocelyn’s bedsheet.Dad stood beside the pool of blood. His tense face went deathly pale in an instant. However, just as quickly, he forced the emotion down, replacing it with a look of disdain and impatience I could not understand.I slowly made my way to the stairwell. When I reached Dad, I tugged at the hem of his shirt. My voice broke with sobs.“Dad… is Mom… is Mom dead?”Dad jerked his shirt free from my grasp. His brows were drawn together.“Don’t be ridiculous! She’s just throwing a tantrum.

The slap left Mom completely dazed. She pressed a hand to her cheek as blood trickled from the corner of her mouth down her chin.“What’s gotten into you? When did I ever have someone assault her?”Dad seized my arm and dragged Mom and me out of the house. As I stumbled along behind him, my knee slammed into the doorframe. The impact sent a sharp pain through me.When we arrived at Jocelyn’s hospital room, the smell of blood hit me the moment the door opened.Jocelyn lay half-reclined on the bed. Her hair was disheveled, and her face was wet with tears. Her clothes were ripped in places, revealing bruised patches of skin beneath. The moment she saw Mom, she shrank back and screamed, “Don’t come any closer! Stay away from me! Don’t touch me, you monsters!”Dad stood in the doorway. His voice was strained as if every word was being forced out through clenched teeth.“Wendy, just because you can’t have children now, you can’t stand seeing someone else have one? Don’t you realize
