Mia

“Miaa, what are you thinking?” Sandra said slowly as she inched closer to me.

“I'm going to move away. I can’t stay here to train my child. Mom will find out and Scott will kill me.” I said in a rush.

Sandra just looked at me. Even though she didn’t say it, I know she pitied me. I don’t want pity, I hate it so much.

“Where on earth can you go? You literally have nobody else and you don’t have a job.” She asked.

“You have to help me, Sandra. Please” I pleaded as I clutched her hands.

“But..”

“Please babes, please,” I said desperately.

“Okay fine. As long as the baby is staying alive. I will help you. Just have to make some calls then I will get back to you.” She conceded.

I know I am making the right decision. I had high hopes for the future— I thought by now I would be married to the love of my life and have my kids.

But look at me now. I have ended up just like my mother.

My mother was a single mother of two kids, Scott and I had different fathers. And they both abandoned us. I knew how hard it was for my mother to raise us. Scott and I couldn’t finish school.

Pushing back my thoughts as I feel the tears burning in my eyes.

“Thank you so much babes, i will never forget this.” I said as I hugged her. We chatted for a bit and  Sandra left.

She helped make arrangements as promised and I booked an apartment online with my savings and saved the remaining money for feeding. I packed up and left the city.

I know it is for the best but why do I keep getting this unsettling feeling?

“Hey babes, How is everything moving over there?” Sandra asked from the other end of the line.

“Wellsbury is good. The lady you told me to contact was kind enough to give you a job.” I explained as I wiped down the tables in the diner where I worked.

Even though the lady was skeptical because of my condition,Sandra was able to put in good words for me.

“I knew you would love it there. Well, I will come visit soon.” She said

“Yay! I can’t wait. I could appreciate a familiar face here.”

“Be good baby. I gotta go” and the line went off.

My morning sickness got worse, I couldn’t stomach any food without vomiting it all. Whenever I work for long, I feel dizzy and sweat profusely— I hate this so much.

“Mia, our boss asked for you to come to her office immediately.” My co-worker said as I took orders.

“Be right there.” I said and made my way to the back where her office is located.

“Ma’am, you ask to see  me.” I said quietly, fidgeting with my fingers.

“Yes, Miss Lester. Here is your paycheck.” She said as she slid an envelope to me.

“Ma’am but it is not the end of the month yet.”

“No, it is not, I wanted to pay you early. I see that you could use the money.” She explained as she focused back on the papers on her desk.

“Erm, I don’t know what to say. Thank you ma.” I thanked her as I felt my lips stretch into a smile.

“And your friend is waiting for you.” She said as she smiled back.

“Ohh!! Thank you so much.” I left her office as I made a mental happy dance.

——

I entered the dining area again and went to look for Sandra.

“Babes!!” I exclaimed immediately I spotted her and ran into her embrace.

“I am so glad you are here.” I muttered into her hair.

Her familiar scent filled my nostrils, reminding me of home—God I missed her so much.

“Okayyy. Let’s not cry now.” She said as we sat down.

“How are you. You don’t look too good.” She said as worry etched her beautiful face.

“I am fine. Just that the morning sickness has been bad. And I keep vomiting everything I eat.” I explained.

“Have you gone to see the doctor? What did they say?”

“Sandra, I'm fine.” I reassured her,  “ You came sooner than I thought.”

She just smiled and clutched my hand from across the table.

“Can’t I worry for my girl, hmm.” She teased and we chuckled.

“Your mom has been blowing up my phone and I hear Scott has visited your former apartment twice.” She said quietly as she rubbed the back of my hand.

“God!” I exclaimed exasperated.

“Sandra, she can not find out about this, not now. Not ever.”

“But you can’t hide forever.”

“I know. I just..” I sighed weakly. "At least until the baby is born. Let me hide.”

“I hear you but I have run out of lies to tell. She believes I know your whereabouts.”

“Thank you for covering for me.” I said as I smiled weakly.

I know I have demanded so much from Sandra. She has always been there for me since we met. She has my back no matter what and I know she won’t rat me out to my mother or brother— I trust her with my whole life.

“Let me get us something to drink. Tea or coffee?” I offered as I got up from my seat.

“Coffee is fine.” She replied as she busied herself with her phone.

I went to the counter and made us drink— coffee for Sandra, tea for me.

I balanced the cups with both my hands and turned in a rush to get back to our table. I didn’t look where I was going and I bumped into a hard chest.

“Ow” I cried as the cups fell from my hands. I reared back due to force and I braced myself to fall but a strong arm reached out immediately and wrapped around my waist.

I opened my eyes and sprang out of the Man’s arms immediately feeling my cheeks heat up.

“Am sorry, I didn't look where I was going….”

“Miss Mia Lester?”

Killian“Mom, this is Mia.” I said as we pulled away. Mom turned towards Mia, keeping her face straight. Ugh! Not this again. She always does these whenever we bring someone home but then turns sweet in a matter of seconds. It's just a front.“Mia, hello.” She pulled her into a slight hug. She turned towards me. “She is beautiful, dear. Come in.”I placed my hand behind Mia and steered her toward the door. We entered the foyer and went into the living room. Mia looked around like a child brought to a Christmas shop.“The butler will take your bags to your room. Let me go and check on the cook.” Mom said before disappearing into the corner. I looked around the house. It feels good to be home. This place holds a lot of memories—good and bad included. “Erm!” Mia cleared her throat snapping back to earth. “I thought your mom was dead.” Her eyes wide and searching, I wanted to tell her what she wanted to know but.“Stop asking unnecessary questions and better stick to the script,” I sai

Mia“You keep tending to these roses.” Imelda said, startling me. I turned to see her looking around the rose garden, admiration shining in her eyes. “You work too much. Here.” She said, stretching a glass of cold water towards me. Just what I needed. I took the water from her and gulped it down. “Thank you, Imelda.” I handed the glass back to her.“Killian has not mentioned anything about the garden recently, maybe he has not noticed or he chose to ignore it.” I started, “And I’m tending to it because we will be leaving tomorrow. I don’t know how long we will stay.” We stood in silence for a while. I'm going to miss this. It brings some sort of peace to me. I sighed and turned to Imelda. “I'm heading inside now.” “Okay, let’s go,” she said, grabbing the bucket that contains the tools I used. “I have packed everything Killian listed down. If there is any extra thing you need, let me know.” She said as we headed into the house.“Thank you, Imelda, you didn’t have to do that. I can

MiaI run my hands across the arrays of cloth that hang in the store. Why did Sandra bring me to this place knowing fully well I can’t afford it? I can’t afford to pay Killian back. “Have you seen anything you like yet?” Sandra said from beside me. “Look what I found.” I turned to look at the dress she was holding up, It was blue and silky. “Sexy right?” She asked, dangling the dress, her eyes lit with excitement.I just shrugged, “It is okay.”“What do you mean it is okay? Have you seen this dress?” She said, her eyes bulging. “Every top celebrity wears this.” “It’s beautiful, gorgeous even but I can’t be getting anything just because I like them. I have to check the tag price.” I puckered my lips at her “and every damn thing in here is expensive.” She looked at me in disbelief, “Mia do you realize that you have with you a black card and you know what that means right?” She raised her eyebrows waiting for me to complete her statement.I rolled my eyes at her, “Ughh!” “It's a lim

MiaI giggled as I pressed the send button. Killian had Imelda bring my phone to me this morning. “Put me on FaceTime.” the text Sandra sent read.I pressed the call button immediately and she didn't waste time answering.“Hey hey bestie!” she squealed. Always so cheerful. I missed talking to her. “You completely forgot about me.” She whined as she puckered her lips.“My phone was having an issue which is why you couldn’t reach me.” “Fabian had been worried sick.”“I know.” I made puppy eyes at her. I called Fabian immediately I got my hands on my phone. The situation is out of my control so all I have to offer is sorry.“How is your baby coming along?” She asked, smiling cheekily again.“My belly is perturbing. And I feel so fat. My clothes don’t fit anymore. And my skin is always dry.” I could go on to list the things that have been happening to me. I just wish I had someone who would hold my hand and walk me through the journey.“You will get through it, baby. I’m here for you.

MiaI opened my eyes, squinting as the light hit my eyes. I feel a pounding headache in my head, and it hurts the back of my eyes. I tried to sit up. “Lay down please.” I heard Imelda say, I turned to the side and saw her sitting on the lone chair in my room. She was smiling down at me.My throat feels scratchy and croaky. I need water. I pointed at the glass of water on my nightstand. She rushed and handed it over to me. She helped sit up a bit and I gulped down the water. “Thank you,” I mumbled. My head aches and my cheeks and teeth hurt so bad. “What happened? What time is it?” I didn’t remember getting upstairs. The last memory I had was wanting to go upstairs after the whole drama. “It is already morning dear. How are you feeling?” Imelda replied, her smile still in place. “Like I was hit by a truck. And my teeth hurt.” She didn’t say anything but smiled sadly. “Where is Killian?” “He already left for work. And your brother left this morning too.” She took my hands in her

KillianScott stared back at me; he didn’t say anything. Mia moved immediately forward. “Killian! Hey!” she said in a surprised tone. What are you doing here?”“This is my house.” I said, still keeping my eyes on the motherfucker. “What is he doing here?”“He just..” Mia began to but the annoying brooding male cut her short.“I came to see my sister. Have a problem with that?” He asked with an annoying smirk.“Okay, we are making something to eat. Do you want some?” Mia chipped in trying to break the building tension. “I will go take a shower. Make sure to clean up this mess.” I couldn’t keep the bite out of my voice. “Don’t talk to my sister like that. She was just being nice.” Scott said as he leapt off the chair and came to stand before me.Mia immediately stepped in between us. “Scott it is o..”He is too stubborn, he wants to prove to me that he can take me down. Only if I allow it. But I am not done poking at him.“I will talk to her anyhow I please, she is my wife.” I retorted
