NO LONGER NECESSARY

Auteur: Zoe bear
"What's wrong?" one of the Betas beside him asked casually.

Darius tilted his head slightly, eyes narrowing. "I thought I caught a familiar scent."

The other men exchanged looks. These weren’t just colleagues; they were his inner circle. Pureblood wolves, raised together in the same brutal training camp. They knew exactly who I was: the once Luna-heir of Moon Claw Pack and the woman who had once devoted everything to their Alpha.

And yet, I was always the outsider.

By human standards, I was beautiful—soft brown hair, rich brown eyes, and a quiet, graceful demeanor. But I wasn’t the bold, icy blonde he gravitated toward. I wasn’t Emma. To Darius, I had always been... convenient. Present. But never enough to let his guard down.

Even after we bonded—officially, under the full moon—he remained distant, polite, and cold. His friends barely masked their indifference, addressing me as “Luna” only out of obligation. I could’ve been invisible, and to most of them, I was.

So even if I had been standing in that hallway, breathing in the same space as him, Darius would have dismissed the scent as a mistake.

He didn’t investigate further. He turned and re-entered the private room, never once glancing back.

I didn’t realize one pair of eyes had caught me—Rocco's.

Later that night, I drove Zoe home to South City. She was completely wasted, her inner wolf drunk off her balance. As a former Luna, I instinctively reached out through our mental link to soothe her sleep.

When she finally stirred awake, bleary-eyed but safe, she launched herself into my arms like a child.

"You were my Moonlight savior last night," she murmured dramatically. "I owe you a Red Moon Feast, Rae!"

I laughed, gently pushing her away. "Go wash up. Breakfast’s waiting."

Zoe yawned and leaned her head on my hip, pouting playfully. “You still smell like a Luna. It’s unfair how comforting you are.”

I rolled my eyes, trying not to smile. “Up. Now.”

She finally obeyed, emerging later with wet hair and a hungry look. When she saw the herb omelets I made, her entire face lit up like a sunrise.

"You always fry the cheese just right," she said, sliding a piece onto my plate. “Being able to eat your food… I must’ve been a wolf saint in my past life.”

She was halfway through her meal when her smile vanished.

“Darius is back?” she asked, eyes locked on her phone screen.

I nodded without looking up.

Wordlessly, she handed me the phone.

It was Rocco's post—his social media “Alpha Moments,” the place where he paraded around like a wolf celebrity. His caption read:

[Happy 21st birthday to the blonde, blue-eyed beauty who’s stolen the Alpha’s heart.]

The photos were like knives. Half of them featured Emma and Darius together, intimately close. One photo caught my breath, he and Emma, standing side-by-side, holding the same crystal carving knife, slicing into a moon-shaped wolf cheesecake. Their energies coiled together like an ancient bond ceremony. As if fate had tied them with ribbons of inevitability.

Lyra—my daughter—wasn’t in a single frame.

I knew why. They wouldn’t dare let Darius’s grandmother see this. That old Luna, who once ruled her Pack alongside mine, had sworn never to allow Emma near Lyra. Emma’s mother had betrayed too many sacred oaths, and Darius’s grandmother had never forgiven her.

But there Emma was—in full view, golden hair shining under the lights, her blue eyes filled with warmth that didn’t belong to her.

She looked like she belonged there.

I blinked hard, looking away from the screen.

Zoe’s voice was soft. “Rae…”

“It’s okay,” I said, pushing the phone back toward her. “It doesn’t matter anymore.”

She stared at me, stunned. “Wait… you really mean it?”

“I asked Darius to sever our bond,” I said quietly.

Her eyes widened like I’d slapped her. “You asked for it?”

I nodded once, steady.

Zoe shoved aside her plate. “But… you loved him for seven years, Rae. You endured every bruise that bond gave you. You stayed for your daughter, your dignity… Why now?”

I took a breath. “It wasn’t one moment. It was thousands. Quiet disappointments stacked so high I couldn’t breathe anymore.”

My voice shook, but I didn’t stop.

“When I saw Emma wearing that bone-stone necklace—the one Lyra made herself—I realized something. There’s no place left for me in his world. Not even as the mother of his child.”

Zoe wrapped her arms around me without a word.

“It’s okay,” she whispered after a long silence. “You’re our Luna. Not his. You never needed to beg for your place.”

I nodded, even though my chest still ached like I’d torn something loose and let it bleed.

After breakfast, I headed to HQ. I hadn’t formally resigned from Darius’s research group, though I knew he avoided me like I carried a plague.

Fate had a sense of humor—because we crossed paths the moment I walked in.

He brushed past me with that signature Alpha coldness, his aura like ice brushing skin. Powerful. Distant. Always just out of reach.

I gave him a soft, professional nod. “Good morning.”

He didn’t even flinch. Just kept walking.

I didn’t care anymore.

I turned and headed to the lab, where I dove into my AI project—refining the Lunar Phase Suppressant for unstable young wolves. It was the only thing lately that gave me a sense of control.

Around noon, my phone buzzed.

Grandma.

“Rae, a snow sheep just arrived from Austin City. Come home for dinner. It’s cold out—Grandma made whole-lamb soup with silver ginger. Your favorite.”

I smiled onto the phone, warmth rising in my chest. “I’ll be there after work.”

But as I prepared to log out, David—a Beta from Darius’s side—knocked on my door. “Urgent document. Alpha said to deliver this to you personally.”

I scanned it. Routine retest paperwork. Nothing urgent about it.

I remembered the days I’d smile and agree, trying to win favor from these cold Betas—pretending that being Luna didn’t make me different. Pretending I belonged.

Not today.

Especially not after David had sat in that meeting and let them slander me without lifting a finger.

I stared him down and said coolly, “I’m not doing this. I’m going home.”

  • Too Late, Alpha — She’s a Queen Now   A CROWDED BANQUET

By the time we arrived, the banquet hall was already buzzing with energy—laughter, champagne, and the hum of gossip bouncing off crystal chandeliers and polished marble floors.I stepped in wearing the ivory embroidered gown. Simple. Classic. Safe.Almost instantly, I felt it—eyes tracking my entrance. Some lingered too long, some looked away too quickly. Admiration, curiosity, judgment; it all swirled in the air around me. But I didn’t flinch. Years of being married to Darius had taught me to walk through a room like I belonged, even when I didn’t feel it.The host, Leo—a long-time friend of Rocco’s—smiled and started to greet us. But before he could say a word, a voice shouted from the entrance. The entire room shifted.Something was coming.No—someone.Whispers rippled across the crowd like electricity on water. A collective breath held. I didn’t even need to turn. My body already knew.Leo stiffened, his smile faltering. Then he gave Rocco and me a quick, awkward nod and moved past

  • Too Late, Alpha — She’s a Queen Now   I LIKED IT, BUT IT WASN’T MY GOWN

Zoe’s fever finally broke the next morning, and I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. Once she was steady on her feet again, I headed home, exhausted but relieved. There was still one thing left to deal with—tomorrow night’s banquet. The one where I had to show up looking like I belonged. Like I hadn’t spent the last few years hiding in the shadows of someone else’s life.I left that afternoon to find a gown. The boutique was luxury-level—soft jazz playing, the kind of lighting that made everything look like it belonged in a magazine spread. Sales associates swarmed around a single gown near the center of the floor, adjusting it with a reverence usually reserved for religious artifacts.Curious, I stepped closer.“Can I help you?” one of them asked with a tight smile.I returned it politely. “Just browsing for now.”She nodded and stepped back, but the watchful look in her eyes didn’t fade.I’d been married into the Westbrook family for years, but I was never the kind of wife

  • Too Late, Alpha — She’s a Queen Now   SUDDENLY AT GUNPOINT

Darius’s phone rang just as Lyra was finishing her orange juice. I barely glanced up, until I saw the caller ID."Baby."My chest tightened. It was ridiculous, really. I’d promised myself I was done caring. But love isn’t something you can just switch off. Especially not when it’s tangled around your ribs for years.I looked away, pretending I hadn’t seen it.Darius noticed. Of course he did. But he didn’t bother to hide it. Instead, he answered right there at the breakfast table, his voice lower, softer.“What’s wrong?” he murmured into the phone.Lyra, completely missing the tension in the air, perked up. “Is that Aunt Emma?”Darius didn’t even hesitate. “Yeah.”I didn’t flinch. I just kept stirring my coffee like it meant something. But inside, something was quite broken.Lyra opened her mouth to ask to talk to Emma—but caught herself. She remembered I didn’t like her, and guilt flickered across her face. She dropped her toast and suddenly didn’t want to eat anymore. Then Darius’s e

  • Too Late, Alpha — She’s a Queen Now   LYRA SAYS SHE STILL WANTS MY COOKING

Logan stepped into the tearoom just as Nina and I were chatting. He froze, watching us with an expression I couldn’t quite read.He and David had always assumed I’d never truly walk away from the company—or from Darius. They thought I’d flinch the second someone like Nina came into the picture. She was bright, beautiful, and utterly disarming. The kind of woman men didn’t just notice—they remembered. But I hadn’t flinched. Not only had I welcomed Nina with a smile, but now I was teaching her how to brew Darius’s coffee.Logan looked like he’d seen a ghost.I didn’t care. I had bigger things to focus on. When Nina invited me to dinner after work, I declined politely.I had plans.I wasn’t the same woman I used to be—someone whose world revolved around Darius and Lyra.I have a new life now. And tonight, I planned to eat alone and keep working on my AI project.Just as I stepped into my car, my phone rang. Lyra’s name lit up the screen.“Mom, are you done with work?”I softened at her vo

  • Too Late, Alpha — She’s a Queen Now   RAE ISN’T COMING HOME ANYMORE?

It was nearly one in the morning when Darius finally returned home with the others after Emma’s victory celebration. He carried Lyra, fast asleep in his arms, her little hands curled around his neck. The butler, startled by the late hour, stepped forward with concern. “Sir, is everything alright? It’s late.”Darius only grunted, brushing past him without a word. After settling Lyra into bed, he made his way to the master bedroom. The moment he flicked on the lights, he paused. The room was empty.Turning to the butler, he asked, “Rae didn’t come home tonight?”The man shook his head. “No, sir. She hasn’t been home.”Darius stilled, his expression unreadable. Rae had been disappearing more often lately. Quietly. Without explanation. He hadn’t realized how frequent it had become—how her presence, once constant and warm, had turned to nothing more than an echo in these walls. Was something going on?The next morning, Lyra woke up beaming, her energy still buzzing from the night before. Sh

  • Too Late, Alpha — She’s a Queen Now   HE COULDN'T HIDE HIS ADMIRATION

Even Darius—stoic, unreadable Darius—couldn’t mask the awe in his eyes. From across the racetrack, I watched Lyra and Rocco leapt to their feet like two overexcited pups, screaming Emma’s name as she surged into the final stretch of the race. The crowd roared, the engines howled, and in the eye of that storm, Emma was untouchable—fearless, flawless, feral.William handed the binoculars back to me, practically vibrating. “Rae, I told you, didn’t I?! No one watches Sky race and walks away the same. You’re falling for her too, huh?”I gave a faint smile but didn’t respond. What was there to say?Bitterness crept in like poison through my bloodstream. I pulled out my phone and hovered over Darius’s name. I already knew how this would go.He’d ignore the call.Like he had a hundred times before.Still, I hit dial—maybe because I needed to confirm what I already knew. Maybe because this felt like the last time.Through the binoculars, I caught the flicker of his phone screen. He saw my name.
